50/50 blend of VWENX+VUSUX provides ridiculous risk adjusted return vs 100% stocks Posted: 08 Jul 2018 07:46 PM PDT Try this tool: https://www.portfoliovisualizer.com/backtest-portfolio#analysisResults You can try two portfolios, 50/50 VWENX(Wellington which is Vanguard's risk adjusted fund)/VUSUX(Long Term Treasury) vs 100% VTSAX (Total Stock), holy cow! 2002-2018, everything reinvested, annual re-balance. the 50/50 blend would have converted $10,000 into $33,315, pure stock would be $36,084. But look at that maximum down drawn. -11.96% for 50/50 blend, -50.84% for pure stock! Worst year for 50/50 blend was -2.16% during the 2008 market crash vs -36.99% for 100% stocks! I believe this is because Wellington provides excellent risk adjusted return compared to pure stocks. And long term treasury is the perfect hedge for stock market declines without sacrificing too much growth compared to traditional bonds (say VBTLX). I don't understand why people buy corporate bonds when they have much heavier correlation with stocks compared to treasuries! Re-balance is also super powerful, you are basically using the more expensive of the two assets to buy the cheaper of the two assets every time you re-balance. What do you guys think? Is BEP a good buy and hold forever dividend stock? Posted: 08 Jul 2018 01:09 PM PDT I'm a married 30 year old. Fully funding all our necessary accounts. I have about 10k or so in a taxable brokerage account that I am trying to spread around into things that interest me and are also good "hold forever" kind of stocks. I already have good diversification and dividend picks in ITOT (total US etf), JNJ, T, CMCSA, and SO. I did some more digging and came upon BEP (Brookfield Renewable Partners). I was wondering if this is a good stock to buy and hold forever. The things I like: - the industry is stable and will probably grow massively by the time I retire - solid financials (good and growing cash flow) - the dividend is already pretty high at around 5% and seems pretty reliable The questionables: - fairly new company when compared to the bigger dividend names - somewhat inconsistent EPS (seems the norm in renewables) Anyone on here holding this stock or have looked into it and walked away? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
What is a reasonable % of net worth to have invested? Posted: 08 Jul 2018 03:41 PM PDT I am a 22 year old college student so I obviously don't have much money. With that being said, what would be a reasonable ratio of money in savings/invested. Right now I have about 25% of my "net worth" invested (if you include crypto) and 75% in my savings. Posted: 08 Jul 2018 08:21 PM PDT Holding $410 weeklies until maybe Mon or Tue, I see this easily breaking $417 tomorrow, and it could go well beyond $430 this week if the uptrend continues. I predict an overall great week for the market and NFLX is one of if not the best contender for not going down with the market as we saw last month. Any insight or thoughts onto NFLX this week? Are Chinese ETF's currently undervalued? Posted: 08 Jul 2018 06:28 PM PDT Hi, I've been looking at a few chinese etf's that have recently dropped in value by over 20% in 6 months due to the trade war between US and China. Does the drop in these stocks make for a buying opportunity? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Intelligent Investor / One Up On Wall - Have they worked for you? Posted: 08 Jul 2018 11:02 PM PDT Have you had any success in beating the S&P 500 using the methods outlined in these books? What about any of Jim Cramer's? Any other books? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jul 2018 04:23 PM PDT I was wondering what people's thoughts were on JD as a buy and hold stock, it's still got tons of room to grow in China and in international markets, and it also has tons of major backers (tencent, Google, Walmart) to help combat Alibaba. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jul 2018 08:02 PM PDT Hi all. I'm 34 and have a good job with very good benefits, and retirement contributions. I've been also investing on my own personal brokerage account with Schwab for the last few years. I started with investing $500-600/month but for the last few months I have increased that to $1000/month. Here is my breakdown.
What does everyone think about this allocation? I was thinking of putting more on SCHE, but with the trade wars happening, and China slowing down, felt like 15% was enough. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 09 Jul 2018 03:05 AM PDT Honestly these 3 stocks have performed well and could be long holds or daily trades. WWE leading the pack with all of the television deals. SQ rebounded really well after the tarrif news and HEAR is continuing it's growth with the overall success of Fortnite. Let me know your opinions on these three. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 10:16 PM PDT Got an offer in the mail from Wells Fargo. Was a balance transfer for 15 month, 0% and the fee was 4%. I have no need for a balance transfer but i then learned i could have my credit converted to cash and deposited into my checking instead, same 4% fee. Would it be wise to take the loan out, dump it in the market now? Essentially i just need to make a +4% return on the money for it to be worth it. Seems very do-able to me. I do have the money to cover the loan if the stocks perform negatively, thats a non issue. Loan amount would be $12,768. Is this a common thing? Am i missing anything here? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 01:07 PM PDT What are the thoughts regarding turning profitable calls into spreads, as a way to take profits, and if you don't do this, how far do you let your winners run before you take profits? [link] [comments] |
Volume of S&P 500 Since Trump Presidency Posted: 08 Jul 2018 07:34 PM PDT Is there any rational explanation for why volume has spiked so considerably since the election of Trump? Specifically looking at the S&P 500 where volume was near 2B and now is near 8B per day. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jul 2018 09:26 AM PDT You can follow the action at the U.S. National Debt Clock. This ratio has been rising at what seems like an alarming rate. I have been watching it climb from 101% to the current 105.19% in the past months. For perspective, this is much higher than other developed countries such as Germany, the UK, and even France. Only compared to Japan, does it look good but that doesn't seem to be anything to brag about. [link] [comments] |
What happens to BSCJ on 12/31/19? Posted: 08 Jul 2018 07:17 PM PDT It's an ETF that holds corporate bonds that all mature by that date, what happends if I'm holding shares at that date? What are the pros and cons of such a fund? [link] [comments] |
Looking for alternative investing ideas Posted: 08 Jul 2018 01:21 PM PDT What are some unconventional ways to invest that return at least 7% annually? I'm interested in taking on more risk in terms of investing and to diversify my portfolio. This is risk capital that I can afford to lose and won't need to touch for at least 20 years. I'm looking for something different than bonds, S&P, individual stocks, cryptocurrency. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Does Roth IRA limit only apply to salary or to total earnings? Posted: 08 Jul 2018 02:26 PM PDT I'm curious as my salary puts me right at the threshold for the phase out. However, if I count in my bonus and restricted stock units, this puts me well above the limit. Do I still qualify for a Roth IRA in this case? [link] [comments] |
Books on investing in assets/stock market Posted: 08 Jul 2018 09:11 AM PDT I have just finished my university bachelor's degree in Economics & Business Economics and thus have an intermediate level of understanding in corporate finance and asset pricing. So I know the prominent theories surrounding securities, futures, options, multi-factor models, covariances of error terms, capital/securities market line, financial & accounting analysis, risk diversication etc. The thing I lack is the practical knowledge in investing in portfolios. So I know the basic theories, but I don't know where to go to invest in assets, what different possibilities there are, where I can see my returns. In short, where do I get started. I was wondering what books you guys would recommend to learn these things. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
