White House officials are making plans to order grid operators to buy electricity from struggling coal and nuclear plants in an effort to extend their life

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:45 AM PDT

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-01/trump-said-to-grant-lifeline-to-money-losing-coal-power-plants-jhv94ghl

The Energy Department would exercise emergency authority under a pair of federal laws to direct the operators to purchase electricity or electric generation capacity from at-risk facilities, according to a memo obtained by Bloomberg News. The agency also is making plans to establish a "Strategic Electric Generation Reserve" with the aim of promoting the national defense and maximizing domestic energy supplies.

"Too many of these fuel-secure plants have retired prematurely and many more have recently announced retirement," only to be replaced by less-secure, less-resilient natural gas and renewable power sources, the memo said.

Trump administration officials have contemplated action for more than a year. After the Energy Department conducted a reliability study last year, Energy Secretary Rick Perry proposed a rule that would have compensated coal and nuclear plants for their ability to store months' worth of fuel on site. Federal regulators shot down the idea in January.

That didn't quell requests for help. A FirstEnergy Corp. subsidiary requested immediate intervention from Perry's agency in late March. That plea followed the Akron, Ohio-based company's announcement to shut three nuclear power plants that feed the grid operated by PJM Interconnection LLC, the largest in the country. FirstEnergy Solutions filed for bankruptcy within days of its emergency request.

Invoking national security concerns could bolster the Trump administration's case in any legal challenges over the intervention, said Ari Peskoe, director of the Electricity Law Initiative at Harvard University.

"It's going to be tough to get a court to question DOE's factual finding -- particularly if it relates to national defense," Peskoe said in an interview. Tapping two statutes simultaneously also could give the administration more "legal room," Peskoe said.

The government last invoked the Defense Production Act to address the California energy crisis in early 2001, ordering natural gas sellers to prioritize contracts to sell supplies to utility Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

    Disclaimer: I own $PEGI and $NEP shares.

NEE's electricity generation portfolio consists of roughly half from natural gas, about a quarter from nuclear, about a quarter from wind, and single digit percentages from solar, coal and others. Back in 2017, coal was about 2% of their portfolio, but they recently shut down a major coal fired plant and replaced it with more natural gas and solar. I'd also expect their solar portfolio to rapidly grow as they had convinced a Chinese solar panel manufacturer to setup a plant in Florida by promising to buy GWs of solar panels.

I don't remember exactly what NEP's electricity generation portfolio consists of, but it's likely somewhat similar to NEE.

    PEGI is self explanatory.

First Energy's portfolio consists of about 50% from coal and 25% from nuclear.

    Thoughts on $CWH

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 05:49 PM PDT

Been intrigued by the performance of Camping World Holdings Inc. these past few months and have kept a keen eye on the stock. Fundamentals seem to be strong with impressive 20% Y/Y revenue increase and nearly 4% increase in sales. CEO Marcus Lemonis even bought shares out of his own pocket recently yet the stock continues to tank.

Two weeks ago I decided to invest at the $21 mark as I figured the floor would hit near $20 due to what I considered to be institutional sell offs. Much to my dismay, $CWH is the worst overall performing stock in my portfolio (currently down 7.13%). Been dollar-cost averaging since initial purchase but still no floor in sight. RSI dipped below 30 this morning so I decided to go in again.

My question to you all: what is your opinion on the stock and does anyone else out there see a crazy undervalued stock primed for a trend reversal or is this a dying stock?

Why are midcaps not shown love?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:02 PM PDT

I have been looking over a lot of popular index set it and forget it portfolios such as the Coffeehouse portfolio. A lot of popular portfolios suggest small caps for younger investors. (I am 26) I have yet to see any higher touted pprtfolios having midcaps.

Google Won’t Seek to Renew Pentagon Contract After Internal Backlash

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 03:57 AM PDT

Really curious to hear some of your thoughts on this, as I've seen "ethical investing" come up from time to time. Here's a couple articles on the subject:

Google Won't Seek to Renew Pentagon Contract After Internal Backlash (Short WSJ article)

How a Pentagon Contract Became an Identity Crisis for Google (Long NYT article)

I think this is beyond the usual cigarette/gun/prison stocks. I had read an article in Barron's awhile ago arguing that pension funds, etc. who are divesting from gun stocks as a response to shootings are wrong because their primary responsibility is to fund pensions/etc., not take a moral stand for a certain percentage of their investors, at a loss of potential gains.

I'm reading that the letter was signed by about 4000 employees, which would be 4.7% of their employees. Should 4.7% of a company's employees, who may or may not be varying degrees of shareholders, impact potential lucrative business decisions? From the WSJ article:

Just as some employees have protested Google's work with the government, others expressed concern that the opinions of low-level employees shouldn't have a bearing on the company's business contracts.

Do you think the support or opposition to (potentially lethal) government contracts would impact recruiting/retention? Obviously the west coast is a lot different than the east coast, where defense contractors make a more positive impact on the local economy.

Here is the full text of the letter which was released back in April.

[NL] Starting with Index Funds & ETFs (need advice)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 05:33 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm an non-EU, non-US expat living in The Netherlands and I'm about to start investing my money.

My monthly investment plan is between 2000-2500eu. I did my research and I think my best options is Meesman - loved the amount of information and structure on the website.

Apart from Meesman, I'm looking into Binck, but also in iShares and etfMatic. I'd be able to split the monthly deposits in multiple accounts if it makes sense.

What's your experience and advice regarding my position? Would you go all in in an index fund or you'd also pick some ETFs (which ones, from which platform, and why, if so)?

    Thank you in advance

Do employer 401k matches count for total end of year contribution?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:03 PM PDT

This might be a silly question but from my understanding you can max out a 401K with $5500 invested. If my employer matches 5% what would be my necessary monthly contribution ?

If I invest 5500$ on my own does the employer match add to your yearly total contributions ?

$IQ with another great day! Is it really the next $NFLX !?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:19 AM PDT

After a nice sell off yesterday, $IQ has hit +3.72% already today ! Looking more and more like a promising company with a high ceiling! As the CEO stated he would like to take after Disneys growth path, the company is associated with Netflix and is one of the most used apps now in China.

Hope its not too late to buy more!

New IPOs, some said they are Chinese version of Netflix and Twitch? Are you going to long it. or just buy during the hype and sell it later.

I think they are currently just speculation, and can be pretty risky being the new IPO. what are your thoughts?

Are there any mutual funds/ETFs that focus on companies that care more about employees than shareholders?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:23 PM PDT

So one example I can think of at the moment is Costco, but most 500 companies seem to always at least mention "shareholders" in either their corporate slogan or webpage. I suppose I could seek them out myself, but it quickly becomes labor intensive to keep up with them, in the instance that they have a change in leadership philosophy or internal policy.

I don't particularly care much about the environmental or religious angle that many SRI funds seem to, but it is important that these companies don't work their employees to the bone for minimum wage.

    Thoughts?

How can we justify this bullish trend?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:19 PM PDT

I have heard the P/E ratios are still in line, but the market keeps good up and up and up. I think we're headed to a crash soon, but, if you disagree, how can we justify this 10+ year increase in equity values? Is it retained earnings? Weed stocks?

Taking navs into account when buying ETFs?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:13 PM PDT

    Hi all

say two funds replicate the same index, with comparable costs and volume, one's nav is 10$ and the other's is 50$: would you pick one or the other based on the price and why?

Aside from a more efficient way of using all the money you budgeted for the investment if you buy smaller chunks, are there any advantages in owning more smaller products instead of few bigger ones, or viceversa?

    Alternative Investing Idea?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:05 PM PDT

    Hello,

I've had and been trading for couple years now but I am starting a career in an investment firm that requires me to close out all my trading accounts. I've been typically investing in blue chips so that my money could grow over time and protect myself from inflation.

I've always been investing in securities so I am not sure what I can do with my money atm. I do not want it to sit in my savings account growing .000000001% interest so any recommendations or an idea that can point me to the right direction will be very appreciated!

Note* I did look into CD accounts with some banks but the .5% wasn't very attractive.

    Thank you!

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 05:05 AM PDT

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!
