Help!? A broad insurance question that someone may or may not be able to answer?

My mother in law passed way suddenly when we were on honeymoon. We had to come home 10 days early- book new flights, cancel accommodation etc.

My mother in law was a drinker and had been in and out of hospital / rehab for a number of years etc. There was no immediate concern for her health when we left. She certainly didn't have a terminal diagnosis or as far as I'm aware any concrete alcohol related diagnosis.

My holiday insurance is saying that they are not paying out because there is an exception clause regarding any claim that is 'directly or indirectly as result of alcohol or drug use'. This seems pretty broad to me ? It seems alcohol use could indirectly apply to loads of situations. I live in Ireland FFS. We had no information to suggest that she might die. In fact we are still awaiting the death certificate following post Mortem. Regardless, it had nothing to do with me or my actions ? Does this sound right?Anybody have any thoughts ?

Total Loss. Offer too low. No response.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:17 PM PDT

My daughter, a minor, was rear ended in an older car. It's a 2002 PT Cruiser and we're in Utah. There were no injuries. The other drivers insurance called me and accepted liability. I took the car to their suggested repair facility. The repair bill was $2,700 so the other drivers insurance company considered it a total loss and offered me $2,300. Problem is, this was a nice car. Single owner, good history, very clean.

They said they would email me information. What they sent was a claim number and a single sentence about an attachment. The attachment included instructions on how to sign the title over to them and a shipping label for it. They did not include written information about their offer.

I did not want them to have possession until after we agreed on remedy. I drove to the repair place and picked the car up rather than send it to the insurance companies lot.

There are several similar year and miledge vehicles for sale locally for $3,000. There are much cheaper ones too. I advised the insurance company via fax and email that I thought it was worth $3,400 with tax and license included. I included example vehicles from local classified listings and averaged the example prices.

I don't like talking on the phone and I prefer to deal in writing. They have not responded in 7 days and I'm not sure how to proceed.

I would like them to provide me their estimate and information about how they arrived at it so that I can try to refute it and increase the offer.

I could wait them out. I could file a complaint with the Utah Insurance Division. I could contact their insured driver. I could file suit against their driver in small claims court. I could mail the title and hope for the best.

What's my best option? How long should I wait?

[Request] Sample document of detail of damages to home after a disaster.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:48 PM PDT

Hi, I need some help. I was one of the victims of Hurricane Maria, My home did not receive extensive damage, but the resulting aftermath has left me and many others with a very bad case of PTSD. Since this is the first time I have to claim anything, the adjuster has requested a document explaining the details of the damages. But, I have some kind of writers block, I have not been able to start writing this document for months. I hope I am not being too forward if I could ask for someone to provide me with a sample of this type of document. I have no idea what details to include. I know the details influence the compensation but I truly am at a loss here. Thanks in advance from the bottom of my heart.

AZ Insurance options for soon to be dad

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 05:49 PM PDT

In Sep I will be a dad.

Both my wife and I come from families who lived the dream. Dad worked, mom stayed at home and raised the kids. We both would like this for our child as well.

Till we saw the cost for insurance if she was not working. I make $67k/yr, and I am finding it....just hilarious....that insurance will cost me more than my house and car payment combined.

If she and the kid are under my work insurance it would be $700+/mo

Shopping the marketplace gets us closer to $500+/mo

What other options do we have?

Kaiser not covering University bill, please help?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:17 PM PDT

I live in Southern California but my school is in Central California. There is no Kaiser within reasonable distance (over 50 miles) and I lived on campus with no car being allowed. I was desperate to solve a UTI so I went to the campus health center and asked for a prescription. I was able to get the prescription at a local pharmacy for a reasonable price but the doctor in the health center also insisted on me sending urine cultures to be tested, with no choice. She charged me $5 on the spot to send the tests and said it would determine if I would have a UTI and that would be it. I just now received a bill at home (I'm on summer break) from Questdiagnostics for multiple tests totaling to $196.86. I called Kaiser to ask if this could be covered, they said because the treatment was not sent from an urgent care facility or emergency center, it doesn't count. Can I do anything about this? It was not an urgent care facility but it was an urgent matter and I had no choice but to use the school's health center. I'm willing to pay this bill and learn my lesson (of not using the school's health center) if that's what it comes down to but I'd just like some advice.

    Insurance policy change

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 04:24 PM PDT

Hello guys. So I plan to change my life insurance policy from whole-life to a term insurance, but I'm currently in another state and don't have any of the paperwork with me. Do you think I can just pop by one of the company (MetLife)'s local office and change it?

I saved my car from being totaled for insurance purposes!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:38 PM PDT

    Hello all,

A few weeks back my car was rear-ended and the other driver was found at fault. My insurance agent recommended that I file the claim directly with the other driver's insurance to avoid having to pay my deductible and take the risk that it wouldn't be recovered from the other insurance company.

I took my car to an approved garage and got an estimate on the repairs and forwarded that to the other insurance company. They came back and said that they were going to total my car because the cost of the repairs was approaching the value of my vehicle and there was a possibility that there was some unknown damage that would push the cost of repairs above the value of my vehicle.

I decided at this point to file through my own insurance company in the hopes that they would reach a different conclusion. My American Family adjuster came out today and he said that the other company (Infinity Insurance) had valued my car too low by about $2,000 and I can go ahead and get my car fixed and my insurance will pay for it. Yay!

I take good care of my vehicles, so it would have been difficult and risky to try to find another vehicle similar to mine for the buyout I was offered. I am very happy with the result.

I had a no fault accident and was hit twice by two different cars.(damage claim)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:43 PM PDT

I have lawyer for the injury portion of the claim. The first driver who caused the accident(front end damage), their company took responsibility for at least the cause of the accident and a damage adjuster came and totaled my car out. They wanna cut a check to the lein holder but I don't have my case number and I don't have time to go get it. The lien holder is a state entity so I thought that the information they need is public information(child support). I'm putting in a whole lotta leg work considering the fact that I don't have reliable transportation anymore and I'm still in pain and having headaches everyday from those accidents. The second person who hit me(rear end damage) company called me today about my car and was asking did the first company take care of it and I didn't know what to tell him. My insurance company is taking a hands off approach because I didn't have collision coverage. This whole thing has thrown my life off balance and made me rearrange my previous plans. I was in-between jobs but now I have to try to go back to work. I don't know what to do any advice will be appreciated.

    Edit:English State:Indiana

P.s.The job that wants to hire me will have me working all day and I may not have the time for a doctor's appointment right now. Plus its physical work that I don't know if I'm going to be able to handle or without making my injuries worse.

Issue w/ Liberty Mutual and rental car

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:07 PM PDT

LM provided me with a rental car while my car is getting repaired. I originally called Liberty Mutual this Tuesday to let them know I was bring my car in. Due to my work schedule, I wasn't able to bring it in until Thursday, therefore, I also picked up the rental car Thursday.

I got a call from LM today saying they would not pay for any more rental car days past today (Friday) because I was supposed to drop the car off Tuesday, and the repair would've been done today (LM doesn't want to pay for a rental car over the weekend). I don't remember LM letting me know that this would be the consequence if I didn't bring my car in on Tuesday although in their records, they have it written that they told me that—I don't remember.

The guy at Enterprise sounded optimistic that I would be able to work this out and get the extended days from LM.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how I should go about getting LM to cover these next few days of car rental? My car repair should be done Monday or Tuesday.

Thoughts on this poster's experience with Northwestern?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:25 PM PDT

    I saw this post over at /r/personalfinance - https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/8nr5lm/my_husband_and_i_are_idiots_weve_been_bamboozled/

What is your take on what transpired?

We only have one side of the story. My take away from it is seems like the OP got cold feet after signing the applications. There may have been some huge miscommunication. It seems like they signed applications for Life & DI insurance with conditional receipts and weren't expecting the premiums to be deducted.

Other than the agent possibly being pushy, I'm personally not seeing much wrong here. At least for my life & DI policies you can't cancel by email or phone. The only two ways are in writing or stop paying premiums.

Provider billed incorrectly, now benefits have run out. Recourse?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:02 PM PDT

A friend of mine in NY on medicaid has been seeing a physical therapist. The physical therapist was supposed to alternately bill the visits as physical therapy and occupational therapy, but instead only billed them as physical therapy, so they have run up against medicaid's 20 visit hard cap.

They have been told they need physical therapy to reduce long-term damage to their jaw, but now they cannot get access.

What can they do? Is there any way they can get the physical therapist or medicaid to retroactively change the billing?

Insurance didn't cover my claims so I reached a settlement with the clinic

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:55 AM PDT

I posted here a couple months ago about insurance not covering my claim. It turns out I should be on their plan for at least 90 days before I can be eligible for benefits. Either that or I should show proof of having been on some health plan 90 days before the claim - which means you can't fall sick or get hurt or anything for like 90 days. Pretty stupid, if you ask me.

Anyhow, I spoke to the service provider (physiotherapy rehab center) and explained to them that insurance won't pay for my treatment and they agreed to settle for a few hundred dollars. Phew!

TL;DR - Insurance didn't cover my physio because I wasn't covered 90 days prior to the treatment so I spoke to the rehab center and they agreed to settle for far less. I hope you find this useful.

    First time dealing with insurance

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:39 AM PDT

I'll make things short... lady ran a red light and T-Boned my door and tire on the drivers side.. car is a 2012 Camry XLE. At this point I'm pretty sure they're going to total it. I've received a call from their insurance a few days after filing my claim and their insurance said they're taking 100% full responsibility. What does this mean? I've only had the car for a month and still owe most of the balance (10,000). Will they pay it off? Will I get some money to put a down payment on a new car ? I need advice!

Switching insurance - will Healthcar.gov let me enroll early?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:56 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have insurance through my work but it is extremely expensive (25% of my paycheck) and I want to remove my wife and daughter and get them signed up with healthcare.gov.

beause the healthcare is so expensive, do you think they will let me sign up before open enrollment?

Also, I have another one on the way (just found out). I can leave my current insurance June 25th (effective as of September) but Healthcare.gov doesn't open up until Nov 1st and not effective until Jan 1st.

Given, those dates, do you think they will let me switch before the due date? The baby wont be due until after Jan.

Thanks so much. Not really sure what i should be doing - I just cant afford this insurance anymore

Go through insurance or not? I damaged fiance's BMW and NOT on his insurance (Metromile)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:31 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Yesterday, I [25F] scraped my fiance's BMW on the wall of our garage. Scratches all the way through to the primer on the right bumper, but no dent. I felt (and still feel) terrible, and since it was my fault I'll obviously pay for the damage.

I went to 4 different body shops, got the estimates, and now all that we're deciding to do is whether or not to file a claim with Metromile. Context and questions below:

    - Lowest estimate I got was $832 and this place is top-notch. I was shocked at the price, but he has special 3-stage paint on his car and apparently this is what's driving the cost up (I know that I'm not getting screwed over on the bill because I had knowledgeable redditors and family confirm that to me).

    - I am NOT on his Metromile insurance. However, his deductible is $500. I'd much rather pay $500 if I can... but

    1. Do you think they would even approve the claim because I was the one driving?
    2. And if the claim went through, do you think that it would raise his premiums?

    Thanks for your help!

Engagement ring insurance (State Farm Personal Articles Policy vs Jewelers Mutual)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:29 AM PDT

I compared State Farm's Personal Articles Policy vs Jewelers Mutual and it was significantly cheaper to go with the State Farm. I called to clarify questions about the policy and it seemed pretty all-encompassing. There's always the concern with "potentially having to go to a jeweler of State Farm's choice," but other than that I did not notice any differences.

Interestingly enough, there did not seem to be the option for a "Ring Rider."

Has anyone had any experiences with either that would skew me one way or the other?

    Geico Rate Increase?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:32 AM PDT

I know there's on real way to get a spot on estimate for this but I'm curious for someone that's never had an accident, is over 25, I have a 2013 that I royally fucked up the allignment/steering rack, Is there a way to generalize how much of an increase I'm looking at? It was an at fault accident where I ran over a concrete curb (no other cars/people involved).

Mainly just wondering at what point does it become more financially sound to just take out a loan and pay it off rather than file a claim? I mean, if I'm looking at 5k in damages and have a 500$ deductible, currently I'm paying 100/month and I'd be happy if it stayed under 200/month.

Also on a side note, does a passed DUI that was court expunged from your record affect your rates, not sure if insurance could see that?

    thanks.

    Minor fender bender advice?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:20 AM PDT

My car and another car were backing out of our respective parking spaces and the rear of our cars collided. There was extremely minor damage to my car (paint missing) that I do not plan on repairing. Their car has a dent and paint from my car on it. I expect they will turn in a claim to their insurance company for the damage done to their car. Police report is being prepared but has not been completed yet. I live in a no-fault state.

My wife called our insurance company and they started a claim, but they want a recorded statement from me because I was driving. Since I do not plan to ask for any money for repairs, should I give them a statement or cancel the claim? How does all this affect a potential claim made by the other party? Thanks in advance.
