Am I the only one scared?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 08:31 AM PDT

I mean, come on. This is too much. I sold my positions last summer and I've watched as prices kept shooting up, and I'm scared of a financial crisis. Is anyone else? American debt is at an all time high, and there is no sign of the administration trying to stop it from growing, international relations are extremely frail and it just seems like the perfect mix. Time to short?

$FSLR - Hold or Buy the Dip?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 07:19 AM PDT

Bought in last month at $69 per share and am pretty disappointed to see it drop so precipitously over the past few days. Im down nearly 24% as of this posting and I still see a lot of long term potential, but I'm also very new to investing in general.

Anyone else waiting to see when it'll bottom before you scoop up more or are you bearish on this stock (if so, worth asking if you're bearish on solar in general, too)? I know it was downgraded because of China's decision to curb solar growth, but I would love some more nuanced analysis or links to resources that can better inform me on long term outlook.

    CSIQ.O go-private

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 09:17 AM PDT

This seems like old news but I've just stumbled upon it. $CSIQ.O wants to go private and there was an offer over $18. As of this post the stock is at $12.37.

Seems like I should be buying it hoping for a 50% increase when it is bought from the shareholders.

I can't seem to find any recent news past January of this year. Any information/insight on this would be very much appreciated

Selective Genesiology ("Gattaca") Stocks: Genetic Selection, Manipulation, Eugenics

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 11:56 AM PDT

The topic of genesiology/eugenics may be ignored and considered morally reprehensible in modern society, but appears to be inevitable. I will ignore moral argument for this discussion.

The film Gattaca presents a vision of a future society driven by eugenics where potential children are conceived through genetic selection to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents. NASA has named Gattaca as the most accurate science fiction film of all time. Selective genesiology is inevitable.

This article reviews modern research aimed at making Gattaca the future. https://nerdist.com/20-year-anniversary-gattaca-genetics/ Some researches are quoted as saying genetic selection will be reality as soon as 5 years from now.

Gender and eye color can already be selected for with a procedure known as pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).

Key traits could include height and skin color. Susceptibility to cancer, heart disease, obesity, and genetic disease could also be on the table. Industries associated with these traits are already trillion dollar industries. Studies show height plays a major role in male social & financial success. Koreans and other asian culture pump millions into solutions to lighten their skin.

    Age and risk

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 01:03 PM PDT

Hi, just wanted to share something I was thinking, I really want to hear your opinions and tell me where my reasoning is flawed. So here it goes..

I've always heard sentences like "you're young, you can take risks in investments" or "as you get older you switch to safer investments". I kinda get it, I have plenty of time to make money back in case something goes wrong if I'm young.. But.. compounding effect lose importance as you get older, so the earliest you invest your money in "safe" long term bets (sp500 etf for example) the most you'll get out of it, I feel like every dollar you earn while in your twenties is worth a lot long term, so why risk it? On the other side as you get older might aswell invest in riskier stuff with the fresh money you get, if you managed to set up a good amount of money in "safe" long term stuff when you were younger, your money has less time to compound anyway and there are always opportunities.

So wouldn't it be more logical to invest your paychecks in progressively riskier stuff as you grow older and be really conservative with your investments early on?

EDIT: I want to clarify, I'm not saying you should re allocate your investments in riskier stuff as you grow older, I'm saying I think it's best to invest your new paychecks in riskier stuff as your grow older, but not touching your safe investments, letting them compound since your twenties.

Market seems to be doing people good this year, but my portfolio is down about 20% this year. Help needed please.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 01:01 PM PDT

Hey everyone, so here is some context for you all: I started investing in the stock market a bit more than a year ago(Around March) on TD Ameritrade. I started out with $3000 and my portfoliowent up to about $3800 by the end of that year. Now, with the 2018 year, my portfolio has dropped about $520 as I am currently sitting at about $3280. I am here requesting some help, I will explain all the moves that I did and the reasoning behind it so you can have an idea of what I am thinking and maybe you can help off of that. Thanks!

2017 Year (This is just to give insight of my thinking process, this is not where I need help, if you want to read it you can, where I need help is how to move forward/what I did wrong in my 2018 decisions)

    • So the first stock I invested in was Nintendo, where I bought 10 shares at about $26.80. The reason why I invested in Nintendo was A. because of it's new app Fire Emblem: Heroes which proved to be a big hit(I bought the shares the day before the App came out) and B. because I think the Switch had a lot of hype and would boost this company and the stock. About a year after, I made a 100%+ return on this stock and it is my biggest winner.

    • The second stock I bought was PULM, a cheap stock which potential, Tl;dr huge lose, my biggest down, bought 75 shares at around $4, went up to $5, I did not sell, it dropped down to like $1.60 where I bought 50 more shares just for it to drop to .4 . I lost around $342 but this has also been a big lose and I was still up $800 with it.

The rest of my stocks were wins for the 2017 year.

    • I bought Activision/Blizzard, 10 shares, at about $53, great year in 2017, a bit of a worse year in 2018 but this past month it has been up a good amount and is now sitting at about $74.50. Bought this because Blizzard and ATVI seem to be strong companies that constantly produce games and DLC to games that people love. Also eSports.

    • Next is T-Mobile - Bought 10 Shares at about $55 - I thought they were a strong service provider moving forward that can dethrown Verizon or AT&T or atleast be a heavy competitor, also liked how they were entering the eSports scene as I still believe is a huge growing business.

    • 10 Shares of Shopify at about $96, just bc of ppl hyping it to be next amazon

    • 10 Shares of Square at like 40, I forget what I did with this. I think I sold to break even because I bought right when the hype was dying down.

    • My brother bought me 10 shares of MU(With my money in my portfolio though) I think I sold this to break even also because I didn't want it as I had no idea what MU was or what it did, tried researching it, didn't fall in love with it, and sold. Just wasn't attracted to it.

I may be forgetting something but overall I managed to be up $800.

2018 (This is where it gets rough)

This year I tried buying and selling stocks, tried to make more moves. To start off, I sold Shopify once it hit about $111 because at the this time the stock kept going up to like $110 then sold right back down to $96, people were toying with the stock to make quick cash, so I just wanted to get out. (Of course months later the stock is now at $164, fuck me) But this was not as bad as a decision as what I did with the stock:

    • I bought 5 Shares of Visa at $117, 10 Shares of Tencent at $55.80, and 10 shares of Logitech at about $36. I bought Visa and Logitech because I thought they could quickly go up(Logitech becuase of earnings, Visa just because it semeed ot be doing well) and I could make quick cash off of it. Logitech has earnings, goes up to $41, and I sold. Sat on this money for a bit. Bought Tencent because I wanted a Chinese stock as China's market was doing well and this seemed promising because of WeeChat and having League of Legends. Proved to be a good buy as it was rising in the mid 60s after I bought it.

    • This is where it gets rough. Time goes by, and T-Mobile and Sprint have some action with a potential merge. Finally they both came to terms, T-Mobile seems to be getting a good deal, and earnings were coming out later. But the stock was down and I was confused, thought this was good, thought earnings would be good, so I sold my Bisa at about $123 and bought 10 more T-Mobile at about $58 but it dropped more right before earnings so I bought 5 more at about $57. Earnings prove to be pretty good, I get excited, but still the stock does not go up much. Now I lose even more, but gladly these past few weeks it has gone up more and I am not down too much on it. I thought that people were just skeptic that the DOJ/Trump Administration would not approve this merge but I didn't think T-Mobile and Sprint merging would do much harm and I thought the argument of acquiring 5G before China was promising to this administration, so I bought. Well now I am here with my portfolio down about $520 this year and where I fucked up with Shopify hitting 163, Visa hitting 135, and Mastercard hitting 202.

I guess I am asking is for some help on what I should do with this portfolio. ATM I have:

    ATVI - 10 Shares - Bought at $53.92 - Now $74.86 - 38.85%Gain

    NTDOY - 10 Shares - B at $26.831 - Now $45.06 - 67.93%Gain

    PULM - 125 Shares - B at $3.20 - Now $0.46 - 85.39% Lose

    Tencent - 10 Shares - B at $55.80 - Now 54.68 - 1.97% Lose

    T-Mobile - 25 Shares - B at $58.03 - Now 57.54 - .86% Lose

    Overall

I don't know how to proceed from here, I want to hold on to T-Mobile as I think it can go a lot higher and NTDOY(Atleast till E3). I have no idea what to do with ATVI, Don't know when I should sell, I don't see how it can keep rising as I don't know what is still pushing this stock forward but I enjoy the cash flow it is giving me. Now idea what to do with Tencent, I have no idea what is up with China, and I don't know what this stock can bring to make it burst up anymore(Honestly I don't know why I bought it, I just wanted a Chinese stock and this stock owns Riot Games which is killing the eSport game right now and is demolishing games in general with how many players they have and how much $$$ they are making off this game). Then there is PULM. Do I just cut my loses now? I kind of want to hold on to it as it has already dropped so low, how much more money could I possibly lose? Or do I just take my loses. And for future, what can I do to see what stocks are going to be strong coming up? Like I do research but I feel like I am always late to the party or never at the party at all, and if a stock is already up I don't want to buy it because I rather wait till it drops, but then it just doesn't drop....

Anyway, sorry this is long, If you are looking to give me help but do not want to read the entire thing I would suggest to just read from 2018 downward or just my current portfolio and the last paragraph as that is what I am currently with and do not know what to do. Thanks for the help.

Edit: Fixed formatting Edit #2: My current Available Funds is $38, so for other buys I would need to make moves first as I want to work with the money I have in this portfolio, not interested in putting in more as it isn't really available.

    $TIF (Tiffany)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 07:46 AM PDT

How is Tiffany valued in your opinion right now? I haven't dug deep into their recent earnings reports or numbers, but on the surface I have a hard time understanding how they're doing so well. Millenials aren't really getting married and the ones who do are busy paying off student loans not dropping 15K on a ring.

Like I said though I haven't looked into their numbers much or what's driving them. So can someone who's more familiar with Tiffany's give me some insight

    What yields higher returns?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 09:44 PM PDT

I'm wondering what investing strategy yields the highest returns? I just started investing in the stock market about 1 year ago. I invested in SQ, Amazon, MU, BABA, Netflix, SHOP,& GOOGL and have had a return of 100% in the past year. My question is, I always see people talking about locking in profits, I'm assuming these people are swing traders or day traders, but if I had locked in profits on any of these trades I would not be up as much as I am right now. I believe its not about timing the market ( which is impossible) but time in the market. Thoughts?

Edit: I'm only 23 years old so I could ride out a bear market.

    Question about Put option strategy.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 10:12 AM PDT

I want to preface that I don't plan on doing this. I literally just buy SPHD because it has good growth and looks like it has handled horizontal markets better than SPY (year 2015).

If I buy a Put, I have the right to sell 100 of the underlying asset for the specified price. Theoretically, I could bet on a large price movement by buying a put and excersize it if the price falls a fair amount, or I could sell the asset if it moves up significantly. Of course I would need to overcome the price of the contract.

With this strategy, the risk is most likely a high price of contract, and losing in a horizontal price movement. But if I were to do this before earnings reports, that would mitigate horizontal movements. My question is, how practical is this strategy? I always figure if it's so simple, I'm either incorrect or the return is bad.

    Thoughts on etf portfolio

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 09:25 AM PDT

    Hello,

I've recently come into some money and am thinking about investing it into a few etfs. I'm currently thinking of placing amounts in VTI, VFV, VIU and VEE. I've also been thinking of placing some in ZQQ but feel that may overlap with the other too much.

What do you guys think about placing roughly 15k total throughout those etfs? Any information would be greatly appreciated

    UPS Strike?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 09:16 AM PDT

UPS has contract negotiations in July with the Teamsters union.

It seems unlikely to happen, especially with current union leadership, but it seems more and more likely as UPS pushes for more and morale keeps sinking. Over 90% of union members voted to authorize a strike. That doesn't mean 90% want a strike, but they are giving the green light if the union feels that is the ultimate way to do things.

Will volatility pick up in July because of this? What would happen if they went on strike? What would happen if they didn't, would price stay similar?

Not trying to have a discussion about UPS policy or work conditions, just stock conditions.
