Pretty much title. There were many witnesses to the incident (my parents, my aunt, several friends of mine). I was not there to witness it. It occurred in a mall parking lot, we were all meeting up to eat together and were all arriving about the same time. I called the police to file a report but the officer showed up and did nothing, stating he couldn't file a police report because we had already exchanged information so it is a civil dispute now. I also filed a report with the mall security who said he could not give me details of his report unless it is subpoenaed by the insurance company. He told me there may or may not be security cameras pointing in the direction of that parking lot.

I am not accepting any liability for this incident. I wasn't even in my car when it occurred. I would like to hire an attorney, would my insurance company pay for this? If not, will his insurance company pay for it after finding that the other driver is at fault?

It should be noted that we both have geico. unfortunately I think that puts me at a disadvantage because they are going to have to pay for this either way so I don't think they care who is at fault.

Is Progressive's rate comparison tool a scam?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:40 PM PDT

I didn't trust it going in, but the rates are so egregiously wrong that I'm in disbelief. They're quoting Esurance at $745 per 6 months, whereas the same info on Esurance's site yields $515.

How long do you have to wait for total loss documents?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 08:14 PM PDT

My car was picked up on May 24th by the insurance company that deemed my car a total loss. Should I have received the total loss docs by now?

I was told that I'd get the total loss docs after the car was picked up and that I had to send them back with the title before receiving the payout.

Does anyone know anything about K Of C life insurance?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 08:06 PM PDT

My mother recently died, she has a K of C policy she originally took out in 1968. "20 year payment life" "insurance for life" "2000 for insured" is all it says aside from the usual insurance language. I know she borrowed from it within the last 4-5 years, the loan balance is around 5k and the dividends are applied to the loan balance.

I am having trouble getting the agent to return my calls, I want to resolve this as fast as possible. Does anyone know how I can determine what if anything the death benefit is? Their website and customer service blows and I can't get a single real answer.

California: Small Hit and Run done to my car. Is it worth getting police involved?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 05:41 PM PDT

Hi Everyone. From what I can tell this is what happened... I was waiting to make a left turn into a parking lot while a car was waiting to make a left turn out of the parking lot. Instead of waiting for me to make my left turn, the car went ahead and made their left going behind me and scraped my bumper. The car quickly drove away and turned and I pulled into the parking lot to see the damage. I didn't have time to get the license plate. The scrap isn't gigantic so I can live with that but I'm thinking based on principle I should maybe look into getting police involved to find this person. Is it worth getting police involved to check the shopping plaza's cameras? If they find footage, do they need to see the license plate AND driver clearly in the video for it to be evidence? What are the pros and cons of pursuing this? Honestly I don't want to expose myself unnecessarily either because...ya know... people can be crazy. The car is new so it's a little frustrating. Thanks in advance!

Homeowner's insurance won't pay for siding

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:04 AM PDT

My home was recently damaged in a storm. We have a $2000 deductible specifically for wind & hail damage. An adjuster inspected the property & is supposed to get back with us with an estimate. He mentioned that a depreciated amount for the roof will be covered, as well as the roofs of our storage buildings, a window, and possibly an amount for the cost of moving a storage building that was blown off of its "foundation" but not damaged.

But he specifically mentioned that our siding would not be covered (the original reason we called for the inspection) because the hardboard siding wasn't dry & was beginning to rot. Of course it's rotting wet, hail damaged the outer layer & then it rained 3x in the 2 weeks between the storm & his visit! Only one end of the house looks damp to me, & (surprise!) it's the damaged end.

I have been out of town for business throughout most of this process & will continue to be, but my wife doesn't really deal with situations like this, so it's pretty much on me. When the guy calls with an estimate, how should I argue the decision on the siding & what % should I be expecting for a 15yo roof?

    Thanks

    Edit: changed rotting to wet

Will insurance make me get my car fixed after a fender bender?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 05:05 PM PDT

    Ohio.

I hit a parked car while backing out of a driveway (It was totally my fault)

It's my understanding that my liability coverage will pay for the other car's repair and I won't have to pay a deductible. (but will likely see a rate increase.)

My 2015 minivan has a dent and scratches on the corner of the back bumper, but it's not that bad. I know I'd have to pay the deductible to get it fixed, and frankly that's $500 I don't really have. But there's still a loan on the vehicle (only a year into it) and I read something that said they might make me repair it to make sure the van's value is still at least equal to the loan value. Does this really happen?

Note that I'm not talking about keeping funds given to me for repair in lieu of repairing it, I just don't want to repair it at all.

Insurance carriers who specialize in high net worth clients

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 04:41 PM PDT

I have seen that some highly-recommended insurance carriers (such as Chubb, Pure, Lloyd's) have a focus on affluent clients.

What is the definition of "affluent" in this space? Is it based on net worth or total assets, and what is the threshold?

Assuming one meets the definition of "affluent", what is the extra advantage to using this type of carrier? The premiums are higher, no doubt, so what are you paying for?

Escrow pay for HO6 or master policy of townhouse? Insurance being weird. Please help. Utah.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:43 AM PDT

Hello there R/insurance! r/realestate pointed me over here after I asked this question. This is all about our townhouse that we bought in Utah.

I got a strange email yesterday evening from my home insurance company saying that they talked to my mortgage company and the mortgage company wont be paying our condo HO6 policy anymore because apparently mortgages don't usually pay the policy for your liability and personal property but that they do pay for the master policy one though as part of our HOA. And after that the insurance people were saying we can set up a payment plan. It's only $14 a month but still.

I tried to get a hold of my mortgage company but they aren't open on the weekend.

This makes zero sense to me. I get a monthly bill from my HOA and pay it every time. Part of that bill covers the master policy but I don't know what portion. Everyone else here I know just pays the whole HOA portion and doesn't get insurance deducted out. Is that even a thing? Why would the mortgage suddenly start paying part of my HOA bill? That doesn't even make sense because that just doesn't seem like how HOAs even work. I've been paying in escrow for this HO6 policy the past year so why is it changing all of a sudden?

So here is my real question to all of you: Do escrows normally pay towards the H06 policy or towards the Master Policy included in your HOA? I've tried googling this but most of the stuff that has come up is telling me the difference between a master policy and HO6, which I already know and doesn't answer my question.

This feels really strange to me. Any advise or opinions would be most welcomed.

    Like a Good Neighbor

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:46 PM PDT

On May 22nd I was involved in an accident (Florida) in which I was not at fault. The driver of the other car ran a red light as my light turned green. I hit the breaks to avoid being T-boned and he clipped my right passenger side. Car is in bad shape haven't driven it since. I am okay. His car has minor bumber damage (I drive, well drove an 04 corolla he was driving a Dodge Ram 2500).

From the start the whole ordeal seemed off. They didn't speak any English. He and the passenger were telling me to not call the cops and that they would fix the damages. I thought they might have been illegal immigrants. He told me he had a drivers license and insurance but he was neither the owner or policyholder. I then explained to him I wasn't comfortable going about it that way because my car was in bad shape and I don't know them etc. At this point the cars are still blocking the intersection, and I'm still in shock this man took a HARD red light. The police are contacted and a report is made.

The same day I file a claim with his insurance, State Farm. They tell me I would be contacted within 24 hours to set up repairs and even a rental if it was needed. I was relieved and a little sore. Since then it has been 11 days and it has been such a struggle to get any information. I constantly get sent to voicemail. They don't return my messages. I've had them pretend to not hear me on the line (I am dead serious about this) then hang up. Yesterday I finally was able to talk to my "specialist" and she says that because at the time of the accident the driver was a mechanic test driving the vehicle State Farm will not assume responsibility for damages.

Where do I go from here?

Also I am 100% sure it was not a mechanic. That is nonsense. Why is it that they just believe what he says? Makes no sense. I guess State Farm really lives up to that slogan.

My insurance won't cover me either because I don't have collision coverage. They also told me that they didn't have the resources to reach out and demand repairs which I think is BS. This whole situation has been a headache from the beginning. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance :)

    Maternity Leave and Health Insurance

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 07:27 AM PDT

My wife starts maternity leave in Monday. Last week, her employer told her that while on leave she'll be responsible for the full cost of her health insurance premium (right now, she pays 40% amd they pay the rest). Can they do that? Her contract says nothing about it.

Geico website confirmed the purchase of another policy when I hit the back button on my browser. Now my premium is permanently higher.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:11 PM PDT

I tried to get a quote to see if my boyfriend's premium will go down if I added him as a driver to my car's existing Geico policy. After entering his info I got to the last page and got the quote. Then I pressed the back page button on my browser to get to the begging to see what the quote would be if I added him on his own car (we are talking about selling it so I didn't didn't add it to the quote the first time). After hitting back two times on my browser, the Geico website popped up a page I hadn't seen before confirming that I had purchased the policy and telling my premium had doubled and that I owe a payment immediately.

I called customer service and they told me this was a normal function of the website and the way it was intended. She said that if you fill out enough information the website is known to add policies, even if you never click the submit button to add a policy. She also said that there is no way to report such a bug and that the only solution to customer service problems is the random screenings that supervisors do on the calls to improve customer service.

Lastly, the rep told me I need to show proof of insurance to release my boyfriend from the policy, and told me what my premium will be for my next payment and it is higher than the premium amount I was required to pay before adding my boyfriend to the policy.

Has anybody ever had a problem like this before? Is there any way to report this problem to somebody who will listen to me?

tl;dr Geico website glitched while I was trying to get a quote and now my premium is higher.

Auto insurance increases for no reason. Seeing what they can get away with?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 12:56 PM PDT

My wife and I both got new (to us) used vehicles a couple of years ago and our premiums were $x. Luckily, since then we've been really boring -- no accidents, violations, missed payments, life events, nothin'! We're both in our early 30's so I presume we're not really a high risk group.

So our auto insurance renewal came up a year ago and I noticed it was about $50 higher (we pay 6 months at a time). "Ah, inflation" I think. Another 6 months went by and they increased it again by another $50. Fast forward to today and I have an additional $150 increase on top of that.

So I did some comparison shopping and found the exact same coverage, limits, and deductibles with another well-known company for slightly less than the $x I originally started with 2 years ago!

Make no mistake, I will be switching away from my current insurance. I highly suspect that they're just trying to see what they can get away with, perhaps because they are betting it's more hassle for me to switch than it is for me to lazily accept it and click the "pay" button. I believe in punishing this behavior and I vote with my wallet. I searched Reddit for this phenomenon and only found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/62dgj4/liberty_mutual_premium_increase/ Perhaps I'm not searching for the right terms because I'm surprised this topic isn't much more common.

So is this a thing? Should I plan on changing insurance every few years to keep from being exploited by the "lazy people trap", or am I off-base here in my thinking? Like I said, we've not gotten so much as a parking ticket and pay all our bills on time, our credit scores are better than ever and we carry no revolving debt. I can't think of any other possible reason for this other than a shady greed tactic. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Dental Insurance without waiting periods?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 12:46 PM PDT

So, I don't get dental insurance through my work and haven't needed it for years (been doing regular cleanings out of pocket). Now though I have some serious wisdom tooth pain and I'm looking into insurance to cover whatever kind of removal or surgery I may need.

Everything I have found so far seems to not cover anything more than cleanings for the first 6 months. Even Delta Dental, which claims to offer immediate coverage, lists extractions as having a 6 month waiting period: https://i.imgur.com/j3Gimkq.png

Are there any insurance companies that offer coverage without a big delay? If not, will I just have to pay out of pocket for this, or are there alternatives?

My aching tooth thanks you in advance...

Job-based Insurance - Is it still possible to get? (or is it an issue?)

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 11:48 AM PDT

Lets say I've always had job based insurance, and due to some job expectations and a huge mistake didn't get any insurance this year. Now I'm doing contract work and there's a company that may hire me.

Here's the issue (past not having insurance and paying the hefty penalty): if the company offers coverage, am I still eligible for that coverage? *It seems like if you didn't have coverage within 60 days, you can't get it, even if offered it, but I'm not sure.*

I'm also generally worried they'd learn I don't have insurance and think I'm a bit of a fool, so if there's any extra paperwork or anything, idk, let me know any info if you have any. Thanks!
