Small business owners, how do you compete with multinational chain stores?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 03:30 PM PDT

I manage a small family-owned and family-operated liquor store in a rural southern community. The Wal-Mart just down the road from us is working on a liquor store. We won't be able to compete with Wal-Mart's pricing because Wal-Mart will be able to move much more volume, and purchase massive case deals. In some instances, they will be able to sell liquor than we (as a retail store) can purchase it from a vendor. This is because of massive case deals (think buying 500 cases of Svedka Vodka at once for a massive discount.) The vendors have a setup that greatly benefits wealthy companies.

In response, I have put forward a marketing plan that keeps our target market in mind. Again, this is a liquor store in a small, Trump-loving, town of only a few thousand people.

    My plan is the following:

    1. Install an American flag outdoors

    2. Push that we are family-owned and family-operated. Every single person who comes through needs to know this. I may even add a picture of my family and I and put some sort of "family statement".

    3. Start a "support the veterans" campaign to enforce the idea that we, as a family supported business, support U.S Military and Veterans. This will go along with a military & veteran discount, photos, etc.

    The goal:

    1. Make people feel better about themselves for shopping at my liquor store versus a multinational chain store

    2. Work to directly target the people in the area. This is a strong patriotic area (think confederate flags) and the military/veteran support should stand strong. In a way, I want to create a personal relationship between my business and our customers.

This is simply a marketing plan I've put together today. I am open to any and all feedback. I welcome constructive criticism (in fact, ask for it) and would like any ideas on how to stand out in the crowd.

    Thanks as always,

    LiquorSales

Fucking stress of finding new clients...

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:53 PM PDT

I'm doing well but it's kind of seasonal my business. Every year I have to find new people or else I'm dead. It's just so damn stressful and it pisses me off. I'm doing better than I've ever done thus far but come new season I lose a bunch of clients and have to start over again.

Anyone else can relate? I can't talk to normies about this sort of a shit...it just SUCKS

Who here has started a business as a spin off of your previous employers business?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 09:07 PM PDT

    Hi Guys,

I'm assuming this is relevant to many people. You worked in an industry, saw an opportunity in the same industry, and decided to pursue it.

A friend and former co-worker of mine co-founded the company I'm currently working for, and I was hired as the first employee, about 4-5 years ago. The company has done well, and I'm proud to say that I was a major contributor to that. I still enjoy it a lot, but there's definitely a different feel with us now having between 50-100 employees than there was for the first couple years as a team of 3-6.

I've noticed a shift in the industry this year, and I have an idea that I'm quite excited about. I don't think my company would even pursue it if I mentioned it, because while it overlaps with what we do, it's not our core business or where we're headed. However, I don't want to mention it because I'm considering just leaving and starting it up on my own for a change. I would probably have a few employees follow me if I left.

I don't have a "non-compete" clause in my contract, but I am specifically concerned about that generic clause in everyone's contract basically saying that everything you do and think while with an employer is the intellectual property of the employer.

Has anyone had problems with their previous employer when starting up a new business in the same industry as your previous employer operates? If so, could you provide any insight of what is allowed and what isn't? Like at what point have I crossed a line. I'm not stealing an idea of anyone else, but obviously things I've seen/heard at my current job have contributed to me formulating this business idea I have.

Look forward to hearing your stories :)

Should I buy a google ad if my SEO is non-existent?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 06:02 AM PDT

I recently started a dog walking and pet sitting business and created my website with wix. I used the correct meta tags (I think) but I can't find myself on google. Would buying google ads help? Or should I improve my SEO first?

How would you grow neighborhood farmers' market traffic in an urban area?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 04:31 PM PDT

In NYC, there are two huge outdoor markets, and about 50 neighborhood markets all across 5 boroughs. A lot of folks in those neighborhoods don't even know they have a greenmarket, or don't go for many reasons (convenience, budget, etc)

Besides putting a flier on every door, what are the best ways to target specific geographic neighborhoods in cities?

Also, I'm curious to hear what might make you go to a farmers market in your community if you don't already.

    Call extensions on adwords

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 06:12 PM PDT

Ok so I have a new local service business and I have been using adwords for about 1 1/2 months now. Two weeks ago I decided to hire somebody to manage my account because I was doing it my self and honestly I had no clue what I was doing. I did get business from when I was doing it at $10/day budget. Now I recently moved my budget to $20/day. So here's my thing... after I hired him he definitely made it way better with keywords and negative keywords, new ads, a whole new campaign. It looks great when I look at it. But the last week I noticed I was getting about 5-7 clicks a day but no calls or emails. Which was not normal. So I searched my ads and on the "call ()-**** part, when I click on it to call now, a different number than my business number comes up. So I found another ad of mine, clicked the call now part, and even a different number came up. So basically my number shows on the call extension but when clicked it goes to another number??? Why? Does anyone know? I asked him about it and he said he has no clue why. Sorry for the long post but I have no clue how it works.

EDIT: I figured hiring a professional to do it and doubling my budget would increase the calls/emails. Which lead to leads and estimates. But this week it has went to literally 0. Even with multiple clicks per day.

rent a workshop for woodworking / craft business - size vs price

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:51 PM PDT

    Hello!

Since last year i was getting ready to start a woodworking business. Everything is ready - business plan, list of to-buy stuff, part of it is collected, all those marketing plans etc.

Now i'm on my search for a workshop. I had one before at my parents' place, but i argued with father and need to move out. Moreover, place was too small to consider it as commercial - so i need something more proper.

I'm not from US so currency doesn't matter, i will talk just in counts.

First, searched for 20 meters for 500 max. But it's a hard way to find that size in some remote area, where noise is not a problem, with a window, without moisture. So i had to look for something bigger / in more suitable area / in better condition. That lead me to 2 months of search - without reason.

Now i'm facing a rent of even 50-100 meters workshops for around 1000-1500. To be honest, those 1500 is above my previous all-in business expected costs. But i started to thinking - "hey, you want to start a business - sometimes you need to take a risk!"

i'm going to start a rent within june, max july. @ August i'm going to run website and first marketing stuff, also first sales. Till end of year i want to decide if i'm going 100% into it - or not. It gives me around 6 months of additional costs (500-1000 per months compared to previous calculations).

    TL:DR:

do you think that rent a bigger workshop at the beginning, taking a risk is a smart decision? more costs but don't need a change if a business "catches". Bigger lose if a business falls. Should i watch at "bright side" (consider that it will be OK and business will run fine) or should i worry about possible "what if..." and reduce potential loses?

    Advice: Business partner vs. Investor

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:46 PM PDT

I posted some time ago about possibly buying out the auto repair business I currently work at. Since then Ive applied for some funding, examined share vs. Asset purchase, and done some back and forth with the owner r.e. terms of purchase and different ways of "Doing the deal".

Which brings me to a bit of a crossroads. We've settled on a purchase price of $250k, as an asset purchase. I have spoken to the bank and learned they need 10% down. Put simply, I don't have that. So I need to either find a business partner to kick in funds and undertake the business with me, or just get an investor to handle the downpayment and repay them asap.

Each has pros and cons. I have a couple of potential business partners in mind. One is coincidentally on my short list of new hires once I take over. This person has ambition, has indicated interest in owning a business, is relatively young, experienced in the trade, etc. Downside: their employment history has a lot of movement, and their hobbies include stock car racing...if something terrible happened I don't know what my exposure would be.

An investor is appealing because the business and the decisions regarding it would be 100% mine, as opposed to running everything through a partner. I'm confident based on my cashflow forecasting I would be able to do a 20% ROI with total repayment within 2.5 years. As I see it, that's pretty appealing. The downside here is I don't know who I would approach for that role.

I'm wondering what some of you would recommend as a course of action, one way or the other. And how do I network to find potential investors if that is the route I need to go? Thanks!

How to reset the day on a Alpha 1100ml Cash Register?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 12:54 PM PDT

I am not sure if it is the right place to ask this but I recently got an Alpha 1100ml Cash Register for my business and after completing the day and printing the z report, I thought it would reset the amount of ticket for the day as well as the Grand Total but it seems to persist to the next day. I have been seeking through the manual and some videos but I can't seem to find a way to reset the day. Any suggestions?

Tax Questions for an Online Independent Contractor

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 12:11 PM PDT

I'm a college student who began tutoring English to Chinese students online through a Chinese ESL company. I've worked very hard at this in the past six months and it's just now beginning to take off: I'm making ~ 20/hr, and expect to take home around 10-12k this year working in my spare time.

How much should I be setting aside for taxes? I've seen 30% most often thrown around, which is insane! Is there anything I"m missing here?

-no business expenses, except perhaps buying an iPad for conducting classes

-no travel expenses/deductions I can think of

-single, commuting to school from home and a dependent on my parents' tax return

-filing a 1099 as an independent contractor

Am I just stuck with this ridiculously high tax rate? What a way to punish those with an entrepreneurial spirit!

Also, how do I go about filing quarterly payments with the IRS?

Make a system existing but a niche market? Is it worth pursuing?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 11:53 AM PDT

    Mortgage or small business loan?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:07 AM PDT

Hi friends! So I have a potentially silly question for all of you. I'm looking at an old movie theater that is for sale hoping to fix it up and reopen it for business. I'm not sure though if I should be looking for a mortgage or a small business loan. Any input would be awesome.

Group text to look like individual texts?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 09:37 AM PDT

I'm trying to figure out how to send a text to about 300 people but make it send individually. It also needs to come from my phone number so they dont feel like they are just part of a massive drip campaign.

    Any ideas?

Giving back stock in a small business.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 07:28 AM PDT

I have 25 percent ownership in a small business and I want to get out of the company for various reasons. The company has no real value so the stock is pretty worthless. Is there anything specific I need to do to give the stock back other than handing it back to the other owners and giving a resignation letter? I do not want any future liabilities to effect me down the road.

    Do I need a cpa?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 07:10 AM PDT

I run a small window cleaning operation. I want to legitimize my business, but I'm not sure what type of professional I should talk to. I need to discuss wether I should go sole-proprietar, or incorporate.

Would a cpa be the person to talk to?

I have a client that is a cpa, and would trade advice for window cleaning. Im just curious if there is another type of business professional that would be better to talk to.
