I asked them to pay for a landscape company that could drive across the empty field behind the house and up to the back gate with a truck and get to the backyard that way, away from construction and do a clean up and basic maintenance and weeding. I would not be able to access this back gate myself with my vehicle nor carry heavy lawn bags full of yard waste back around They are trying to say 'too bad, you could get a lawn mower back there' but they are wrong because there are construction fences blocking the backyard off from the street. Do I have a leg to stand on? This claim is in the 'wear her down until she gives up' phase but I don't want to give up- this is bullshit! I would be in my backyard doing my normal weekly maintenance if my HOUSE HADN'T BIRNT DOWN; which is what I paid my insurance for every month...grrrr

Sold home - Broker telling me to keep my policy

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 02:08 PM PDT

I just sold my condo, closing date has come and gone, everything is done and dusted. My next home won't be ready until the end of the year, and all my property in storage is covered under a policy that the storage company provides. I am currently living with family while I wait until the new place is ready.

Is there a reason (other than to keep me as a paying customer) that a broker would encourage me to keep my existing policy going? With all the bells and whistles like liability and sewer backup, etc... All on the property that doesn't belong to me anymore. Seems strange.

I know I could probably just email and ask, but I want to avoid the run-around. Thanks for any insight.

Parents trying to switch car insurance but they don’t like my car.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 06:36 PM PDT

So my parents are trying to switch car insurance over to AARP since our old insurance company got bought and my mom doesn't like the new owners as much. Unfortunately they won't cover me because of the car I drive. I am a 21 year old female, and I drive a 01 Mercedes clk 430. I have the good grade discount and maintain a 3.7.

My 18 year old sister drives a 01 Spyder mr2. She totaled a 03 mr2 last year (my parents bought this new one) and they'll cover her in that car but they won't cover me in mine. I've never been pulled over, had a speeding ticket, anything. Anybody know why?

I don't really have any options for any other transportation and I need a car to get to work. It's too expensive for me right now to get my own insurance and it's cheaper for me to just go through my parents. Is there any way for me to get AARP to approve my primary vehicle? And how come they'd let my sister drive a sports car that she has totaled before?

Stolen bike claim using renters insurance worth it?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 11:18 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

My bike just got stolen :( I do have renters insurance with a $250 deductible. I bought the bike new in 2013 for $1k, so i guess with depreciation its worth $700? It seems like its worth making a claim, but i'm not 100% sure if my rates will go up and what not. Any advice would be appreciated.

    thanks!

Body shop is holding my car hostage.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 06:15 AM PDT

My brand new car suffered major hail damage back in mid-April. The adjuster for the insurance company approved ~$4,500 in repairs to replace the roof and hood and to do PDR on the remaining dents on other panels. The shop had to do additional work past the estimate (including replacing the windshield) which brought the total cost of repairs to ~$8,500. The body shop completed the work 11 days ago, but has not received payment from the insurance company. The shop says that they cannot get in contact with the adjuster and gave me his phone number to try to call him. I also cannot make contact with the adjuster, and when I call the insurance company they send me around in circles until I reach someone's voicemail.

I'm also paying ~$10 per day out of pocket to the rental car company because my rental allowance did not cover the young driver fee, as I am under 25. Should the insurance company reimburse me for this? Where do I go from here?

****Update: My agent finally got someone at the insurance company to call me. Apparently the insurance company and the body shop are having a dispute about the payment amount. Also, a check was supposedly sent to me for the original estimate amount, but I never received it. I was originally told that the payment would be handled directly with the shop, so I was not even aware that a check had been lost in the mail for the past month. In the meantime, my rental has been extended and I have been promised reimbursement for the young driver surcharge. I will be leaving this company once everything has been settled. I also won't be using this body shop again as they have not been completely transparent with me about the situation. Thank you to everyone who offered advice!

Used homeowners insurance against contractor, his deductible 2x more than my claim, how can I collect my claim amount? (OR)

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:36 PM PDT

Hired the worst roofer ever. He caused ~$2000 worth of damage to the interior if my home. We filed a claim with my homeowner insurance company, relieved total minus $1000 deductible.

Roofer's CCB liability insurance company states "the insured does not want to pursue this claim with the Insurance Company as the damages per the estimate are less than the policy deductible. We suggest you pursue an alternate way to collect for any damages you feel are due to you."

So how do I go about collecting?

    Thank you for the information.

    (Home-Based) Business Liability Insurance, sales < $20k?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 04:35 PM PDT

Have a friend who is all tied in knots because he has the opportunity to expand his home-based hobby business but the chain he's looking to get into wants proof of insurance and he currently has none. He sells his own line of t-shirts and other things I guess. Apparently he called around and was told either they wouldn't insure him because the shirts are printed in China, or got quotes of 5-10k per year. This sounds insane to me.

Shouldn't he be able to get a standard business liability policy with minimal inventory coverage for like $500-1,000 considering how small his operation is?

    Thanks for any help!

Resources on how to find health insurance at 26?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 06:57 PM PDT

I'll be turning 26 in November and health insurance is required for my graduate program (which I will finish in March and hopefully be employed soon after.)

I've started to think about it, simply because some of my classmates are having to do that same and I realize I have absolutely no idea where to even begin. I just need a bare bones plan, preferably the cheapest on out there since I only have left over loan money as income.

Are there any how-to guides or websites with good information? I tried Healthcare.gov but the lowest plans I could see were $222 a month :/

I don't think I'm allowed to do open enrollment as that would leave me uncovered from late November until January 1st.

    MA Merit Rating Plan

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 06:54 PM PDT

It's that time of year when I need to renew my car insurance and I'm confused by the $1700 they're charging me under the Merit Rating Plan. I resided in a state that didn't do license points until I moved to MA in 2015. I received a speeding ticket in MA in January 2017. I paid it. I just bought the MA gov. report and it's the only incident on my driving record. I had one fender bender in 2014, with my prior state license. Otherwise, my most recent speeding ticket other than the one above was in August 2012, in my previous state of licensure. I bought a policy with this company for the first time in 2016.

    I'm confused about the following:

    1. It seems like the surcharge for points for experienced operators is bigger than for inexperienced operators. Why? I don't get it. MA gov website with the breakdown I'm working from. Also, my plan lists me as only being a driver for 3 years (the amount of time I have been licensed in MA). If my assessment is correct, I don't want them to consider me as having been licensed for 12 years?

    2. Is $1700 (or an extra ~$142 a month) really what I should expect for a single speeding ticket? It's 2 SDIP points. My MAPRE CIC Merit Rating is listed as 06. From what I can tell I should be, at worst, a 5.

    3. What is the "6 year policy experience period"? Does that mean the lookback is 6 years from the effective date of the new policy? i.e. the new policy would go into effect on July 1, 2018. So the lookback would be to July 1, 2012?

    4. How far is the look-back? I've always been confused about how long these things haunt you. It looks like the only way to reduce those points (as someone who has relatively little driving record in MA) is to get an insurance policy, keep the same policy, and have no issues for 3 years ("the clean in 3" thing). Is there a course I could take or something?

Responses to any and/or all of my questions greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Younger friend in an accident with company car but he used his personal insurance instead?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 06:13 PM PDT

Friend rear-ended another person with the company car, called the police, but gave his own insurance instead.

The boss told him to use his own since he wasn't sure if he had full coverage and in case my friend did then it could pay for the damages.

My friend called his family who told him to use the boss' insurance because they don't have full coverage but the boss wanted him to use personal insurance and in the end my friend did that after being told by the boss that he could claim it under the boss' insurance later.

    What should my friend do?

[KY] No-Fault state and just what does that mean to me?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 01:41 PM PDT

I moved from VA to KY recently and it's been a good move so far. That is until I shopped insurance for home and auto. Auto is about three times the amount than what I was use to in VA. I was informed by the auto insurance rep that KY is a "No-fault state" and that it's one of 7 or 9 states that do this. Thus, premiums are higher. The rep also requested I carry the max coverage because the likelyhood of being involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist (even though you are required to carry insurance in KY, there is no opt-out like VA) is high. I did a little reading online and found that this system basically rewards bad drivers... or... doesn't reward good driving. I noticed a lot of bad driving while looking for houses and to and from work. Now it makes more sense why these drivers don't use their signal EVER or pull out in front of on coming traffic or cross over the lines in to oncoming opposite flow traffic. My question is why would I necessarily need higher coverage? The insurance rep was biased but said it was necessary if the other party went to the doctors (said a chiropractor, as an example) and cashed out for the amount. He also mentioned it's for protection of being sued. It didn't make any sense. It made it sound like having higher coverage is benefitial for the other party involved so that they can cash in on my coverage...? I feel that having higher Bodily Damage/Property Damage is really for those who wheel around the neighborhoods like it's the backyard country. The car I own is old (12 years) and has no lien. I don't drive like a maniac or rush to where I'm going. So why would I need the highest coverage offered?? Someone please shed some light on this. I've considered changing companies because of the interaction with this rep and his poor choice of ways to explain things. Thank you for any help.

I was in a 3 car accident and my insurance wants me to pay. I don't understand why I'm at fault?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 05:11 PM PDT

I currently live in Georgia and am insured through State Farm. I was in an accident where I had stopped and wanted to make a left hand turn. The car behind me stopped, but the car behind her did not stop. That forced the car behind me into my car (my car did not strike anything). The car that caused the accident then drove off. I got the license plate number, but the police said the license plate was stolen. My insurance wants to file an uninsured claim where I still have to pay my deductible. Shouldn't the insurance of the person who was forced into me have to pay? I collected all of her information and relayed that to my insurance. I don't understand why my insurance is so adiment about me paying and not having the other insurance cover the damages. Do any of you redditors have some helpful input?

Fender bender - other party wants cash instead of repair

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 09:19 AM PDT

My wife accidentally bumped a car in a parking lot. The person wasn't there so she left a note with her contact information and apologized. The damage is very minor paint to the other car's bumper. The lady wanted to get an estimate, if it was lower than our deductible we considered paying for the repair. The estimate is $550, I'm guessing a new bumper, but the lady wants $400 cash and it doesn't sound like she wants to fix it since it's purely cosmetic. It sounds kind of shady to me, what would you do to clear this properly and put it behind you?

    Location: Arizona

UPDATE: I spoke to our insurance broker, not the insurance company, and she says she sees this pretty regularly. She suggested we don't file with our insurance company to avoid premium hikes. As long as we document everything and have her sign a release, we are safe to negotiate and settle with her directly. It'll be cheaper out of pocket and we don't have our premiums go up. She doesn't know our insurance company anyway so there isn't a way should could contact them later.

[Florida] Should I be held responsible for "excess storage fees"?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 04:16 PM PDT

    Here is the timeline:

April 24th at 11:02AM - The security guard on patrol duty called me to advise me that my car had been hit. I immediately came outside and he advised me that my neighbor slammed his vehicle into the front passenger side of my vehicle when attempting to park his car in the handicap parking space next to mine. My car was parked in my parking space but, due to the accident, the front of my car was moved into the parking space to the left of mine. I did not see the accident as I was sleeping in my apartment. After hitting my car, my neighbor proceeded to park his remove his vehicle from the scene of the accident and parked his car in his parking space, which is located at the southeast end of our building.

April at 11:10AM - I called 911 and advised them of the incident. A police officer came out within 15 minutes and took a report.

April 24th at 12:55PM - I called my neighbor's insurance company to file a claim. During the phone call, the adjuster advised me that she would be sending paperwork to me via mail to fill out and send back. She also advised me an appraiser would be coming out to take a report on the damages.

May 1st at 11:08AM - Since it had been a week since the accident, I contacted the adjuster to inquire about when the appraiser would come to take a look at the vehicle. She advised me that he would be contacting me today.

May 1st at 11:21AM - The appraiser advised me that he was on his way to take appraise the damages.

May 1st at 11:35AM - The appraiser arrived at my complex. He wrote up his report and took pictures of the vehicle. I advised him that the car was not drivable because the front passenger wheel was tilted and because there was a noise coming from under the hood. He advised me to get an estimate and get it to him. He said he wouldn't provide the insurance company with the appraisal until I provided him with the estimate. At no point did he say he was a third party so I was under the assumption that he worked for the insurance company.

May 1st at 1:30PM - I texted the appraiser to verify what exactly the estimate needed to consist of. His response was "anything that was caused by the accident."

May 4th between 2:29PM and 3:47PM - I called the insurance company 5 times before getting someone on the line at 3:47PM. I was calling to inquire about the paperwork that was supposed to be sent to me. Eventually, someone picked up at 3:47PM and attempted to transfer me to the adjuster. The call went to voicemail. I left a voicemail for the adjuster.

May 10th before 10AM - I missed a call from a number I did not recognize. When I Googled the number, it referenced to the insurance company. The person who called did not leave a voicemail.

May 10th between 10AM and 11:06AM - I called four times before getting a someone on the line to find out what the missed call was in reference to. This is when the adjuster's assistant advised me that my vehicle was being considered a total loss. She advised me that the adjuster would call me back today; which she never did.

May 11th between 2:24 and 3:01PM - I called four times before I was able to get the adjuster on the phone. She advised me that she called me the day before to inform me that the vehicle was being deemed a total loss. I advised her of how I was trying to get in touch with her and she replied with an attitude and said that "well, she's on the phone now." She was being very vague and was not informative during our conversation, so I advised her that I could not sign off on anything without knowing what I was going to be paid. She advised me that I was going to get $1876 ie. 100% of the cash value of the vehicle. I inquired as to how they came to the conclusion that the vehicle was a total loss. She proceeded to advise me that the appraised damages were $1027. She said that, according to the State of Florida, a car can be deemed a total loss if the damages are 80% or more of what the vehicle is worth. I was reluctant to agree to anything or accept what she was saying. I asked her about me getting an estimate and seeing if they could just repair the damages. She said they could not sign off on the vehicle being repaired. We also discussed my vehicle being at the body shop. I advised her that my vehicle was towed there for an estimate because that is what the appraiser advised me to do. She advised me that the appraiser was a third party who was not supposed to advise me of this. At no point before this conversation did she ever advise me he was not an employee of the insurance company. I advised her that I would speak to the owner of the body shop before making any decision.

May 11th at around 4PM - I researched what she had informed me about the 80%. I also did the math and realized the appraised damages were only 55% of the vehicle's cash value.

May 11th at 5:36PM - I emailed the adjuster and asked her about the discrepancy with regards to the 80% figure. I asked how they came to the conclusion that the vehicle was a total loss without it being inspected while on a lift. I also inquired about reimbursement for the towing fee and for the rental car fees I had been accruing.

May 15th at 12:28PM - Since I did not receive a response to my e-mail, I sent a follow up email.

May 15th between 12:32PM and 2:31PM - She replied and we exchanged numerous emails. Her initial response stated that my numbers (which she repeated multiple times during our phone call) were off. She claimed the cash value was actually $1407. She said there was a miscommunication. I inquired about the "owner-retain" option. She said that was not an option. I asked her what the process was if I agreed to the terms ie. when do I get paid and is the vehicle taken the same day? She advised me that, after picking up the vehicle, she would send me total loss docs to complete and send back with the title. Once the docs are received, payment will be issued. I asked about reimbursement for the towing/rental fees and she advised me I would be reimbursed for 7 days of rental fees. I told her to send me the offer in writing.

May 16th at 7:08AM - To speed up the process, I told the adjuster to send me the offer electronically so that I could make a decision.

May 17th at 2:17PM - The adjuster replied to my last email and sent the offer. The offer referenced the $1876 and an additional $175.

May 18th between 2:42PM and 2:53PM - I advised the adjuster that I would accept the offer and I informed her of the vehicle location. She advised me that they were going to pick up the vehicle in 1-2 business days.

May 23rd between 3:11PM and 4:27PM - I inquired about the documents she was going to send me. She asked if the car had been picked up yet. I had no knowledge of this and she informed me the docs would be sent after the car was picked up. I asked her if she knew when the car would be picked up. No response was received.

May 24th - The car was picked up from the auto body shop.

May 30th - I e-mailed the adjuster to find out if the paperwork (ie. total loss docs) were sent out. No response was received.

May 31st - I called to speak with the adjuster but the call went to voicemail and her voice mailbox was full. I called again and got a random agent who advised me that the total loss docs would be sent out today.

June 5th - I never received the total loss docs so I emailed the adjuster again. I advised her that I was told the docs were sent out last Thursday and asked where they were coming from. In her reply, she simply stated the city and state; that's it. Later in the day, I received an email with the total loss docs from someone else at the insurance company.

This is when I noticed that they were deducting $250 for excess storage fees. Should I be held responsible for these fees? At no point did the owner of the auto body shop inform me that he was billing me for storage and, if he had been, shouldn't he be billing me and not the insurance company?

I've already opened a case with the Department of Insurance for the State of Florida. Should I advise them of these storage fees? Should I respond back to the insurance company and tell them that I shouldn't be held responsible for these storage fees? Also, it took them 18 days for them to conclude that the vehicle was a total loss? Shouldn't I be compensated for loss of use for those 18 days instead of just the 7 that they are offering to pay me? Last, but not least, the total loss docs quote a base value of $3411 with a condition adjustment of $1535 and an adjusted vehicle value of $1876. Is the $1876 payout correct?

In total, if I signed the docs and sent them back, I'd be getting $1801 ($1876 + $175 - $250).

Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

If I tell my doctors about my past drug abuse, could my insurance deny future claims that they deem is a result from my drug abuse?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 02:40 PM PDT

I abused a variety of drugs over the course of a year or so. That was a few years ago and before I got my own insurance (I'm in my 20's). I read that your insurance could deny claims, and that is why I have always told them no to past drug use. But I might need to see a neuropsychologist, and I think telling them about my past drug use might be important. Also, if I do disclose that information, could I get in any kind of trouble from not telling previous doctors that took my insurance?

Question about deductible for durable medical equipment.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 02:12 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I have a medicare advantage plan.

Last summer I have Cerebral Palsy and last year got a pair of basic AFOs (braces for my legs). I havent had them since I was a teenager 20 years ago so this was the first piece of durable medical equipment I have ever bought on my own. My PCP sent me to Hanger Orthotics I paid a $500 deductible and 20% co-insurance. A year later the left one is chewing into my foot, and I need to possibly change insurances due to moving 80 miles out of the area. Initially I was told Blue Cross didnt cover my area so I started looking at new plans. The plan I like said they have a $0 deductable for durable medical equipment - so I was thinking I could get custom braces that are a better fit for no-cost.

I called Blue Cross back and they now tell me: they do have coverage in my new city and durable medical equipment specifically braces are a $0 copay as well.... so I spent $685 on something that should have been $0

That money would make a large difference in my finances right now. I suspect I'm out that money but is there anything I can to do get my deductible reimbursed?

Auto accident - insurance wanting to pay chiropractor directly instead of cutting me a check?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 12:22 PM PDT

    Hello all!

    • I was in an auto collision a few months back, which resulted in me going to the chiropractor. After speaking with the insurance of the other driver, they settled at $1,2500 for pain and suffering and $3,000 for medical treatment.
    • I revived and email saying "the remaining balance is available for reimbursement for medical treatment. please either proved me a receipt/invoice of the total treatment or have your treating doctor send me the invoice and payment can be issued directly to the treating facility."

    • Will the insurance ONLY pay the doctor directly, or should they cut me the check for $3,000, seeing at that was the amount they settled at? If it is possible, how should I go about requesting the insurance to send me the $3,000 and I cover the medical treatment on my end. I am assuming I will fall just short of $3,000 in medical (after treatment is done) and could possibly negotiate my chiropractic bills down a little (obviously keeping the remaining balance).

    Thank you in advance!

(VA) Time-frame for insurance company to call back?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 11:40 AM PDT

I was rear-ended by a driver and reported it to their insurance company (State Farm) on the same day. This was over two weeks ago and they have not reached out to me. How long should I wait before letting my INS take over?

It was 100% their fault as I was at a complete stop when the car rear ended me.

Why is it that it took 3 weeks for the insurance company to approve an mri?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 11:14 AM PDT

A close friend was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The insurance company refused his mri for almost 3 weeks. To the point that the Dr was calling them himself every day. This really bothers me. What gives the people at these companies the authority to override someone who's clearly more educated in health sciences? Is it just plain greed? Or is there some logic behind it?

I was rear ended 4/16/18 and have not received compensation from at fault insurance

I was rear ended on 4/16/18 and I've been attempting to get the at fault driver's insurance to pay for my damages. It's been over a month and they keep promising to send out an adjuster, or just simply send the check (because the pictures are enough). I have given them everything that they've requested including the police report and photos of the accident. I have emailed them, and called them every week. Most of the time I do not get an answer. Is there anything I can do to get them to pay me now?

I do have my own insurance. My deductible is over $900 and I have no idea how this will impact my insurance. I don't want my insurance to go up if I file a claim through my insurance. This has been my first car accident and I was not at fault.

Out of State Car Accident Question

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:20 AM PDT

    Question is at the bottom.

While I was on vacation in Florida a guy hit my car with his truck. I live in Pennsylvania and had to leave my car there due to work. The guy who hit my car claimed fault and today their insurance finally claimed liability. My car is being repaired and was not totaled which means I have to go back to Florida to get it once the repairs are done.

I would like to fly down to pick it up as that would be most convenient. I think I may need to spend a couple nights at a hotel as well because I can only travel so long without rest as I tire easily. If I brought my vacation companion I wouldn't have to use a hotel room as much because they can drive great distances easily, but that would cost more money through airfare. Regardless of my plan its going to cost me a lot of money to retrieve my car.

My question is whether or not travel expenses will be covered by their insurance to get down to Florida and back? If yes what expenses will they cover?

    Their insurance company is Metlife

    Company bought out

I work for a fairly large private, family owned company that was recently aquired by a larger corporation. I know very little about health insurance but I believe we currently have private insurance through our employer. Details haven't been released about what the health insurance situation will be but I do know it will be changed in a little under 1 month. What are the chances that coverage will be similar in cost and coverage? I guess what I'm asking is will a corporate insurance plan be better or worse in most cases?
