Fired from job due to my military obligation Posted: 07 Jun 2018 05:44 AM PDT I am currently in the Army National Guard (reserve) and drill around 2 days a month. This causes me to miss work monthly, which I thought wouldn't be an issue because it was discussed before I was hired. I just received a message from my boss notifying me that "due to this obligation you are no longer going to be employed. You need to pick one or the other". Now I am stressing myself out because I'm out of a job, and have many obligations just like the rest of the world (mortgage, family, etc.). What am I supposed to do? Location: Florida EDIT: Wow everyone thank you so much. I was drilling today and brought it up, got a letter from my Sergeant. Contacted Human Resources at my job and my boss has been "reprimanded" and I've been moved to another team with different leadership. Reddit strikes again! Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Update:I've been declared dead (again) [Tx] Posted: 07 Jun 2018 10:43 AM PDT About a year ago I was told during a traffic stop that I was dead in the states system Well I dealt with DPS and Vital Statistics who both assured at the time that I was not in fact dead in the system after going in and having them run my info. Later, during another traffic stop I asked if i was in the officers system and they said no. Well now that I've gone to renew my ID I've been told again that I'm dead. I'm starting the process over again tomorrow morning to have status fixed. I asked if i could get a picture of the screen as proof and the women assisting me wouldn't allow it. All that being said I've also dealt with my mother dying this past year and there was inheritance that we are still working out. I'm wondering if my status as a member of the undead will affect the inheritance process. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jun 2018 09:22 AM PDT Alright, so I know this is really bizarre and to be truthful I am totally stumped on my rights / what I can do as an employer in this case. I run an event planning business. I have 15 employees and rent a small office space in a building with 4 other offices in related fields. Each business owner bought the building in 2005 as joint owners because our businesses intended to work together from the start and it's been wildly successful. In 2010 I hired a woman we'll name Sarah. Sarah is a perfectly nice human being, and for years of her employment there was no issues. Full disclosure, Sarah has never been a small woman (I would estimate her weight around 230lbs when I hired her) but that was never an issue until 2016. At the end of 2013 Sarah went through a bad divorce, and so when she met a nice guy in 2014 we were all very happy for her. She's always been a really private person, but she couldn't help herself talking about him around the office, and by the middle of 2015 they got married. Around early 2016 was when Sarah began experiencing what she told me was health issues diagnosed by a Doctor. She began to absolutely balloon in weight over time. I never pushed further both because her health insurance isn't through my company insurance (it's through her new husband) and because my employee's health issues are none of my business. I assumed she had a thyroid disorder personally, because my mother had something similar happen at a similar age to Sarah. Sarah keeps putting on weight, and putting on weight. Our office has stairs that lead to the main door and when Sarah could no longer properly use the stairs I paid for an elevator upgrade from our business only (we have a vintage building that had a scary older elevator) to accommodate her in 2016. I also purchased her a chair for her weight rating, a desk with more space, and have also at times been very lenient on our sick leave policy for her because I was still under the impression this was a medical issue and she'd been such a good employee for years. As a good employer I wanted to make accommodations for what I THOUGHT was an embarrassing medical issue. She did request the elevator be updated and the chair, but I offered the desk and a few extra paid days off when she said she was feeling ill. Now is the part where this gets kind of bonkers, and a good time to mention I'm a part of our local kink community. None of my employees know this, as for my reputation locally me and my husband keep it very private. I was browsing Fetlife and came across a profile and INSTANTLY recognized Sarah. Her and her husband have a profile with MANY pictures going back to 2016 chronicling their "feeder" journey. Sarah doesn't have a medical condition. So now I'm furious. I've spent about $9200 dollars in accommodations (elevator update, chair, desk) and another $300 in paid time off for this woman thinking she was ill, and she had done this on purpose and lied to me. What can I do? Can I fire Sarah? I don't even want to look at her right now. If I fire her, can she file a disability complaint? Can I report this as fraud? Do I sue her? We do have a company lawyer, however he is on vacation for the next two weeks. His partner said he may be able to look at this for me, however he is swamped and said he might not be able to get to it before our usual lawyer would be back. This is why I'm coming here, as at this point I'm considering even putting her on paid leave if I have to so I don't have to pretend like nothing is wrong for two weeks. [link] [comments] |
Original Dog owner wants him back after over two years Posted: 07 Jun 2018 05:14 AM PDT Michigan. Long story short. After my father passed in April of 2016, a friend stayed with my mom for a month or so, just to help out. He moved out, and left his dog there with her. He's younger and has too much energy for her to keep up with. She contacted the original owner a couple times to see if he wanted the dog back, and he didnt. In October of '16, she was going to have the humane society come get him. I couldn't bear the thought, so I took him. And I've loved having him. Fast forward to yesterday, when the original owner called my mom, asking for the dog back. My mom told him no, because the dog is a part of my family now. And he is. My daughter and I love that dog, and to lose him would be absolutely devastating. The original owner told her he was going to get a lawyer. What do I do? What are my odds of being able to keep him? Posted: 07 Jun 2018 07:54 AM PDT I've been trying to figure out what town my house officially exists in. There are four possibilities.
Geographically, Evans makes the most sense, but I've been just saying Martinez since I moved in because that's what was on the tax records of the houses around me. But I want to determine once and for all what city I actually officially reside in. How would I do this? Who would I talk to, or where should I go to ask? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jun 2018 06:00 AM PDT From this original thread. Finally got through to someone at the dealership with authority to simply say "YES, bring us the check." Spent 20-minutes at my bank, go the check, now I'm just waiting for them to pick it up. They'd prefer if I deliver it, but they've run me through the ringer, and my bank confirms they could could have done it on their end without me, so I'm happy to let them sweat it out. Also need a front license plate bracket. It's only like $10, but if I can make them make my car road legal (as I imagine, believe, and am willing to fight that they should) I'm okay with it. The deal was done ages ago. They do NOT want the car back, they just want to be done with me... so... bracket, come get the check, and we're done. Thank you SO MUCH to all of you guys who shared experiences and advice! [link] [comments] |
Nasty neighbors threatening me for parking in the street in front of my house Posted: 07 Jun 2018 05:29 AM PDT I live in a cul-de-sac in North Carolina. For months I have parked in the street in front of my house which is approximately half in front of my house and half in front of my neighbors house. New neighbors moved in recently and left a nasty note threatening they "will not ask again" for me to not park in the street. I do not block either driveway when I park in the street. As I understand it we own the houses and yards but the city owns the streets so I just need to know if I am facing any legal repercussions or possible towing if I continue to park where it is convenient for me? Thanks in advance for your help. [link] [comments] |
How do I protect myself against my parents? Posted: 07 Jun 2018 06:50 AM PDT I live in Massachusetts in the US. My parents have a huge issue with money. Currently we are 1k behind on the electricity bill and my dad just bought a 4k van to flip it for 5, if not he's going to keep it when he and my mom already have cars. I'm barely legal age and have been working since 16 and give my parents 400 a month. My mom last month spent 1k to get a nose job. My parents always pay minimum on the credit cards. They've since I was little raised me with a huge anxiety regarding money issues, always buying me what I want and telling me we're fine while at the same time mentioning owing so much money. I asked my parents if I could buy a used car and pay it off myself and they went ahead and found me one and I assumed they were going to sign and I was going to pay them back. My mom recently tried to tell me I signed it when I never looked at any single piece of paper regarding the purchase of that car. I found out my Dad forged my signature because I wasn't able to be there to sign for it. This stresses me out so much, its been a year since then and we already sold the car but how many other shady things could they be doing? I remember when I was younger there was a credit card in my name as well. How do I know they haven't been ruining my credit score? I don't know how much debt they actually have since they refuse to tell me and just tell me not to worry about it and they're fine. I don't know if they're even in debt, but I worry about things under my name. What steps can I take to ensure that I'm protecting myself against these things? I'm lost. [link] [comments] |
MIL canceled my caterer to sabotage my wedding Posted: 07 Jun 2018 12:29 PM PDT This happened 3 years ago in TN. My MIL successfully canceled my caterer. We didn't find out until the day of the wedding. My maid of honor called the company after they didn't show up and they told her someone called claiming to be me and canceled their services. My SIL found out from my FIL that my MIL was the person who did it. We signed a contract but is there anyway we could possibly get our down payment back or have the catering company pay for the pizza? Do you think too much time has passed? Suing the MIL would be a waste of time since she has a negative income selling Young Living essential oils. [link] [comments] |
I had to call the cops on my brother Posted: 07 Jun 2018 09:17 AM PDT I'm 22F and he is 29M. Texas. My brother is a very mad and violent drunk. He is drunk every night. I'm in college and I live with my dad, he graduated college and is "applying for med school", he keeps getting denied. He is very mad and fights with my dad constantly. My dad wants him out. My dad is constantly out of town so it's usually just me and him. I came home after going shopping on my 22nd birthday (totally sober) and he was belligerently yelling at me, saying to transfer his phone account to a new one. I said I wouldn't, he threatened to send a video of my dad (who was drunk) to his boss because they "wouldn't want to see their employees getting drunk". I told him I was going to turn his phone off and he said "I am going to f*Ing kill you". I told him I was going to call the cops, I dialed 911 and he said "this won't end up well for you" so I hung up, they called back and i told the dispatcher it was an accidental call. He then "tripped"/kicked my dad's puppy, became more and more aggressive (never touching me but locking me in my room, cursing me out). I was trying not to push his buttons but he was already so enraged. I called the cops again and told them what happened. They took him in and he bailed himself out. The cop said it was "domestic violence by threat". What is that? My brother said i have to go to court. Should i get a lawyer? My brother is back at home (my dad is still out of town) and I am so scared of him. He told me again he would get me back. In the past he has thrown out my anxiety medicine and peed on things (I know). I can't leave because he will hurt my pets, and there's no where for all of us to go. He has kicked the animals and hit them very hard when he is drunk. At the risk of sounding crazy, I'm scared he is going to hurt me. I'm scared to eat the food inthe fridge, too take my medicine, etc because he could've messed with it. I have bad allergies to certain things and my dad and I don't put it past him. I can only sit in my room with a dresser blocking my door for so long. It's terrifying. He said since he bailed himself out he can't afford to move out anymore. He watches me from the stairs when I'm out of my room. I don't want him to get in trouble, i didn't press charges. I know it's not up to me anymore. Should i have called the cops? Is his record ruined? Should I file a restraining order? What is the difference in punishment between domestic violence and threat of domestic violence? [link] [comments] |
Got Assaulted by my GF’s “Mom’s” BF Posted: 07 Jun 2018 02:39 AM PDT Hi guys, Belonging to a religiously conservative society has its drawbacks. I was at my gf's house and hanging out. Her mom and "bf" didn't know i was there because dating is taboo in this damn religion. (Mind you I am in An American state, California where this happened). So he comes home earlier and I try sneaking out but he sees me and Asks me who I am and stuff. I thought that was the end of it but his radical ass follows me on his car through the Freeway and tries hitting me and makes me stop on the side where he threatens me for hanging out with her (we are two consenting adults, doing regular American couple things) and Takes my pics and then when i turn around he punches me twice Making my lips bleed and my nose hurt like hell. He proceeds to go and I'm bleeding , dont know what to do and I don't call the cops because i was worried about my gf's safety as this guy has anger issues. I took a selfie of my bloody lips so theres that but idk what else i can do to maybe press chargers and let that Guys know that you cannot get away with assault, and dating is not illegal in the USA? I'm really heated and I want to make sure justice is served so that these nutjobs stop disrespecting american law. Thank you and Appreciate it! [link] [comments] |
(Update) buying a house - title search found the seller owns 10% Posted: 07 Jun 2018 12:38 PM PDT So my post didn't get a ton of attention but i thought I'd update anyway So a quick rundown for those who missed the original: Seller bought the house in a foreclosure Turns out he was only buying a 10% share The other two owners of the house had died and the 10% owners turned out to not be an heir We did not know who the heirs were at the time Now for the update So....me and the wife are absolutely amazed at the seller As a sign of good faith we have him a week to at least make progress on the issue but we weren't expecting much - everything we read on the issue said it would be months to years for this kind of thing to be resolved He did it in a week When we asked for the update he had already found talked to and convinced the heir to sign a quit claim dead for a(relatively) small amount of cash He is also taking care of all the minor repairs the house needed as an apology for the issues as well as having raidon mitigation installed(we were only barely over the limit for the area and were going to use our own money to do this) We are absolutely stunned but it means we can go forward with our original closing date on our dream home Thanks for all the advice :) Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/8m4m4j/pa_buying_a_house_title_search_found_out_the_guy [link] [comments] |
Spouse gave away land before death w/o consent. (NY) Posted: 07 Jun 2018 06:59 AM PDT My parents were happily married over 40years, shared all thier assets, no separation/divorce, etc. Dad got sick and shortly before he died he put a friend on the deed of my parent's hunting property (against mom's will) for free with a verbal agreement that he would pay over time, essentially making them joint owners of the land. This was a major investment for my parents retirement, and now mom is stuck with a joint owner. I think the deed was in dad's name. Can a spouse just give away stuff - what should she do? [CO] Employer thought I was suicidal, demanded to search my car, then fired me when I refused Posted: 07 Jun 2018 09:12 AM PDT I'm still kinda reeling from this shit so please bare with me. I was briefly employed at an unnamed summer camp in Colorado. Long story short, I cracked a joke a few nights back about suicide in response to a minor inconvenience. This made it's way up the chain to my bosses, who decided that clearly I was a danger to myself and everyone else. Two days later, they called me outside while we were getting ready for a training hike and sat me down on a bench, and demanded that I surrender my pocketknife, as well as unlock my personal vehicle and allow them to search it for weapons, which they would then confiscate. They basically told me I could consent to having my car searched, or be fired. Also worth noting, I had disclosed to my bosses that I was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum and that I might not react the same way as others to certain stimuli. When I became agitated and upset at the fact that they basically were accusing me of being a danger to others, they became extremely frightened and motioned over three sheriffs deputies who they had already called in and had on standby. These deputies then escorted me off campus with my belongings from my cabin. Mind you, they were not going to have the sheriffs deputies search my car, but they themselves would do it, as the deputies did not have a warrant. I was not charged or in any legal issue, and the cops even returned my pocketknife that they briefly confiscated. Is it really legal for an employer to demand to search my personal vehicle? Was this a legal termination? What other info should I provide here? This is all very confusing for me. Thanks for any replies [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jun 2018 07:56 AM PDT So as the title suggest, I'm moving from my current apartment (The lease I have with them ends the 24th of this month) and I signed a new lease starting the 5th, Tuesday of this week. I went to the front office on Tuesday morning to pay my first months rent and get my key, everything seemed normal besides the person working the desk seemed annoyed and was trying to do 10 things at once. 30 minutes later after sitting at the front desk waiting I finally get to pay for the rent, she has me enter my card info and print the receipt. They look at the receipt and tell me everything looks good and hands me the key, I proceed to move all my stuff for the remainder of the day. Flash forward to the next morning everything is normal. I go to work as normal and I drive to my new apartment, walked up the stairs and noticed there was a piece of paper on my door. Thought nothing of it, unloaded all my stuff from work and sat down to look at the paper. To my surprise it's an eviction notice saying I have till the 9th, like any other sane human being I drove to the office and asked what the deal was. They told me because I never paid rent so I'm being kicked out, I proceed to show them the key to the apartment they gave to me after I paid my rent and have them pull my receipt from the folder they keep. They ended up sending my money to my old apartment complex and demand that I pay my rent by the 9th of this month, at 20 years old I don't exactly have 3 months of rent in my back pocket to spend at any given time. TLDR: New apartment complex sent my rent to the wrong place and demand I pay rent in 3 days or get out. EDIT: This has been resolved, thanks everyone for the advice. After going to the new management and talking to the top of the food chain we got everything figured out and settled in. I can finally rest easy in my new apartment. [link] [comments] |
Friend's landlord is demanding he build additions to the house (Colorado) Posted: 07 Jun 2018 05:10 AM PDT Hey there, So- my friend (who doesn't use reddit) is in quite a situation. He has signed some sort of lease with this woman who is pretty disagreeable. Beyond the personal issues, she has been demanding that he build an addition to the house, specifically a carport, as she is storing her car in the driveway and doesn't want hail to hit it (I know) as well as many other monetary demands that are not in writing. Is it possible for him to break the lease if he has some of these demands in writing? Sorry for the brief question, I don't have more info that this. I appreciate your help. [link] [comments] |
Company agreed to pay for my schooling and they backed out, now I owe the school $2350. Posted: 07 Jun 2018 06:08 AM PDT [ME] A verbal agreement was made back in October for my company to pay for my schooling to obtain licensing which would benefit myself as a tradesman and my company because I could perform a wider range of work. The schooling was split into four portions. The first two portions were paid for, no problem. I continued to take the courses into the third portion, and have completed the class. However, the company reneged on their agreement and has not paid for this portion of the class. This makes it so I cannot take the next portion, and cannot receive my licensing. The part I'm concerned about is that now I owe the school $2350. I'm fresh out of college and new the work force and just don't have that money. Now, the agreement was verbal, but I've got emails stating that the class would be paid for. The reason for not paying was a "new policy". What do I do? Do I have any legal grounds to not owe the money that was agreed to be paid? [link] [comments] |
Car was hit. Other driver's insurance numbers are invalid. Georgia Posted: 07 Jun 2018 07:13 AM PDT Not me but my boyfriend. He just bought a 2010 Subaru Impreza less than 2 months ago and some kid backed into the back left driver side door in a parking lot the other day. Estimated by a dealership with a collision center at about $3400 to fix and 11 days in the shop. Needless to say he will need a rental to get to work. Anyway, the kid later texted us a policy number and there was a different policy number on the police report. Both numbers came up as invalid when he tried to file a claim. Vehicle hasn't been insured since 2013 according to the VIN on the car. Is there anything we can do? Or should my boyfriend just suck it up and pay his deductible on his own insurance? Posted: 07 Jun 2018 08:50 AM PDT Hey guys so I recently had my employer fire me and tell me that my final check would not include my bonus for the two weeks prior to my termination. As the pay period ended (I am hourly and the pay period is the two weeks before the payday) I was still employed, and I was fired the day before payday so they are saying they do not need to pay me the commission. I have done some research and can't quite find anything about it in NY specifically. It seems to me though that because I was specifically offered the position with the commission included as part of my pay it should be considered "earned wages" and they should be legally required to pay me for it. Something else to note, when I had been fired, I had already had my check pending as a direct deposit, and they had not included my commission which I learned that nobody else in the company had because of a technical error on the payroll and they were told they would receive it on the next payday. Had that error not been a problem I would have received my bonus like everyone else on that day. The reason they are refusing to pay it now is because I'm no longer with the company. Any help is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |

My managers husband “assaulted” me at work the other day Posted: 07 Jun 2018 09:26 AM PDT So two days ago on monday I was working the front of the store and was rushed with a handful of customers. As I was ringing people up some guy ive never seen walks out the front door with a tv, one of the customers asked if he was stealing it. I was the only one on register for most of the day so i know i hadnt sold anything like that. So i walked outside to confront him, i gave him a bit of space as his car was parked next to the curb. I told him that he had to pay for it and immediately told me to fuck off. So i sternly but politely repeat myself to which he puts the tv on the car and walks up to me yelling at me and that he's my managers husband (for reference he's maybe 5"4' 60year old man) and how stupid i was. I tell him that may be but you still have to pay for it inside. He then proceeds to shove me backwards and gets up in my face pretending hes going to punch me in the face. I tell him not to touch me and he shoves me again so i tell him if he does it again ill call the cops. He yells at me to fucking do it and shoves me again. I turn to a bystander and asked her to call the cops (she didnt do that and presumably walked off)he shoved me again and my manager came outside trying to calm him down. I went inside so as to avoid any other conflict thinking she had it under control. But i had to go into the backroom because he kept trying to get into the store to yell/fight me. My manager even had to bar the door with her body. After a few minutes my manager came in gave a rushed apology and half explanation and left immediately. No police were called or showed up, should i file a police report or is it too late now? Any other advice would be nice as well Edit located in Colorado [link] [comments] |
(Texas) - Ex-Renters trashed house, rental company did not do upkeep Posted: 07 Jun 2018 09:39 AM PDT We've had our house rented in Texas the last 10 years. We're not there, we're military. We have been paying a property management company to maintain it this whole time. We did not extend the lease so that we could take our house back. We just got in it. Windows are broken. They obviously had a pet that pissed and shit everywhere, it's ground into the carpets. There is crayola and fingernail paint all throughout the house on the walls. The brand new kitchen 8 years ago is trashed, missing doors, door handles. My wood floors are ruined. There are bugs everywhere. Trash everywhere. Doors off of hinges. Door bell inside home ripped from wall. Door handles missing, light fixtures missing... the list goes on. Landlord insurance policy I pay for says they won't cover any of it. Property management giving me the run around, actually suggested that an animal must have gotten in after. It's been less than 48 hours since they've been out. Bullshit. What do I do? I am sure I need a lawyer but what sort? [link] [comments] |
Landlord refuses to give me a physical copy of utility bill Colorado Posted: 07 Jun 2018 09:59 AM PDT My landlord makes me pay her utilities by sending me a text message, seemingly at random & with no regularity, to tell me how much I owe her, and then I have to pay it within the next few days. When I ask for physical copies of utility bills, she gets offended and threatens me with legal action. Is what she is doing even legal? What can I do to get a physical copy of my bill so I can know she isn't screwing me over? She claims that by signing the lease, I agreed to do things her way. Please let me know if any more information is necessary. I am quiet, clean, and very respectful of the property, so I'm not sure why she has been so hostile towards me. [link] [comments] |
Can I put my rent in escrow if my Land lord refuses to properly fix my air conditioning unit? [OH] Posted: 07 Jun 2018 05:49 AM PDT So this may was rather warm and my AC has been running quite a lot. I don't have a huge place but it's a 2 bedroom apartment. The one bedroom is essentially storage so I shut off the vent in there so in total I'm cooling a kitchen, a conjoined living room /dinning room area, the bathroom and the bedroom. This unit is constantly freezing which is a huge indicator of it being low on coolant. They came out when I submitted a work order and put some back in it. They ended up over filling it causing it to cycle one and off every 10 seconds. That in itself is very power intensive. So they come out and let some out after I complained again. The result is it started freezing again. Pretty much wash rinse repeat 3 times over until now. I got my power bill yesterday and it was $150. Wtf? That's insane. We religiously turn off lights and appliances when not in use and this bill is more than double the highest bill I received so far at this unit. This broken AC unit is costing me a fortune and I cannot afford to go through the rest of the summer like that. What makes things worse is that I don't even think they have a licensed HVAC technician working on this stuff, just the maintenance guys. (Which I'm fairly certain is illegal in OH). To get down to brass tacks though, can I put my rent in Escrow over this? I would be okay with turning off the AC more but having g two dogs and it being so hot I just don't see that as an option. I would put more fans out but did I mention none of the outlets work in the bedrooms? Please leave a comment if you need more info id be happy to share. I can't wait til I can buy a house!
