The best advice I’ve ever received

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 05:32 PM PDT

The best advice I've received in my career (perhaps my life) is this:

Don't take advice from anyone unless they have achieved the life you want to live.

If you ask 20 people "what should I do with my life", you'll get 20 different answers... the ONLY opinion you should take into consideration is the one given by the person who has a life like the one you want to be living.

If none of those 20 people are living your ideal life, find a different 20 people.

Seriously, this advice got me to stop taking career advice from my parents.

    My parents aren't entrepreneurs!

I can't trust them when it comes to this stuff.

Same goes for coaches these days... Nowadays there's a ton of coaches and consultants out there trying to get you to hire them for their advice.

The only one you should hire is someone who has the life you want to live.

Furthermore, make sure its someone you want to be like!

How do they treat their employees?

What is their relationship like with their spouse?

    Do they have kids?

How much money are they taking home at the end of the year?

How do they spend their free time?

You will become more like the people you learn from.

If you are following the advice of someone to the letter, you will become more like them over time. Make sure it's someone you actually want to emulate and not just a random person on the internet.

I realize the irony here to an extent ;)

However, I guess the advice I'm trying to give you here is "stop taking so many people's advice".

Even me! If you're going to really take what I'm saying here and apply it to your life, send me a PM and make sure I'm someone you want to be like!

The only results I can help you achieve are the ones I've achieved for myself.

Everyone else is the same but they might not be transparent and let you in on that fact...

Sam Ovens has the best webinar funnel I’ve seen in the wild. Figured I would map it out using Funnelytics—worked like a charm!

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 05:58 AM PDT

For those who don't know, Sam Ovens is a consultant who went from working in his parents' garage to making $20M in 4 years. Say what you want about him, but his webinar funnel is stellar. I mapped it out using a new tool I found last week (Funnelytics), and it worked really well.

B2B entrepreneurs, how do you manage to reach the company owners for a sales pitch?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:06 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm currently building a B2B SaaS product and could use some help in the selling stage, where I have no previous experience.

The (web) app only needs 2 seconds to explain what common problem solves, then it's a simple "Look at our website and register/pay if you like it". No appointment needed, no long talking.

What are some good strategies you used to reach the bosses?

Does anyone have any experience buying websites?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 05:40 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy an online business that is already profitable. The idea is that if the website is already making some money I could learn as I go without losing motivation from a lack of momentum. Does anyone have any information on taking over websites? How can I learn about the techniques sellers use to 'trick; people into thinking their site is more valuable than it actually is? How could I use flippa to determine which sites are junk and which ones are legitimate?

Advice on selling jewelry online? Ebay/Amazon/Own Website?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:16 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I want to help my father and grandfather with their jewelry business. They have a lot of 925 fine sterling silver jewelry, also some newer trend bracelets and such.

I know it is very competitive and possibly not worth it to post on eBay and Amazon with all the competition from Chinese sellers and such. I want to start advertising on Facebook, Instagram, but I need to create brand awareness.

I am familiar with photography and shooting.

Any suggestions/advice to a 20 year old trying to get into the business?

I built a tool that helps you get real user feedback on well, anything... and I'm now looking for yours.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 12:48 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I've been in the conversion rate optimization and internet marketing space for almost 15 years. One thing I kept coming back to after about 10 failed SaaS product launches is that I didn't get real user feedback first. Maybe if I had, they wouldn't have failed.

As a CRO minded person, I'm good once I have traffic and sales, but sometimes you need the feedback before you get it. So with that in mind, I set out to build a product that helps get user feedback (insights) on nearly anything... product descriptions, photography, navigation paths, checkout process... pretty much anything related to online websites.

My favorite test that we have right now is our competitor analysis test. You take you, 3 of your competitors and our users will evaluate all of them for you in the same session. It's pretty wild what comes out of these.

Our testers go onto your site, follow your instructions and narrate what they're doing, why they're doing it and what they think could be improved. It's then made available to you in a 5 min (or longer) video.

The site is https://userinsights.com - and I'd love to hear ideas from you guys on what tests you think would make sense. Which things in your business would you like feedback on?

Help Received- Shout out to Fellow Redditor

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:49 PM PDT

Recently, the development of my website hit a brick wall and I was really down. I'm not a programmer; I know nothing about the task.

Prior to this I had reached out on Reddit, asking for a critique of some copy I'd written and received a reply from Justin.

Anyhoo - Justin was incredibly helpful; he focused on the issues and he helped resolve them!

When I decided to stay with the original team, Justin was chill and continued to focus on the importance of my vision.

I hope it's okay to post this here! I want to give kudos to another Redditor in a sub where others may need his services.

Justin is an experienced Square Space Programmer- but he's also a really cool dude.

    Thanks!

How to Design Sustainable Growth. Strategy VS Growth Hacking

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:47 PM PDT

"According to Growth Hacking, you run an experiment to validate or invalidate an idea (short term).

Since Marketing flywheels take time to reach their potential.

Each and every marketing flywheel will yield poor results the first time you implement it unless you're lucky.

What you CAN do is come up with ideas to improve those tiny bits in between (test your email subscription button, test how you can hack your way into reaching more people on Twitter, etc.)

Strategy and Growth Hacking can go hand in hand, but you need to know when to do what."

Marketing, branding, and all that good stuff.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:28 PM PDT

I've been working on a product which I believe has great demand and helps with a rather common and difficult to solve problem. (I'm sure we all think our products do that...)

As much as I'd like to do everything myself (I have no partners at the moment), I realize where my strengths lie, and they're definitely geared more towards coding and building products rather than marketing and branding, not to mention all the time constraints that come with doing things by yourself.

Where should I go for advice about building a brand and reaching my target audience? What should my budget be like? Is this something I can start on my own and then hand-off to a more experienced team?

Has anyone here done something similar by themselves?

    Strategic planning; Any experiences?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 12:24 PM PDT

I'm thinking about investing in strategic planning for my company as a preparation for a funding round. We have a revenue of ca. $480,000 in the past 18 months (since we started).

This package is going to cost us $10,000 and will be done by an outside firm that I have experience working with, so I don't doubt that they will do a good job.

Do you think it was helpful? Was it worth the money? Anything you wish you would have done different in the process?

    Thanks!

Starting a company, need advice about founders and co founders

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 08:28 AM PDT

    Hi,

my name is Dawid. I'm here for an advice. Me and 9 other people are working on our project (mobile app and website), I am the one who gave the idea and did most of the work. Now, I want to start a full on company. The problem that I'm facing is, I don't know what to do about the people I work with. I guess making all of them founders/co-founders is not a great idea, but what else can I do? None of us got paid for any work, as it was something that we did for fun for the most time. What should I do now?

Potential Market Opportunity - Funeral Director comparing to a plumber

I am feeling funeral is unnecessarily complicated and it can be made simple and cheap without all the fancy rituals ? any thoughts ?

And of course more funeral financial info found on this link https://www.funeralhelp.com/families/funeral-costs-funeral-financing-options/ from the original post.

New Venture - What's Your Email Strategy Advice?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:52 AM PDT

    Hey All,

Posting today because I'm pursuing a new venture and I'm sick of seeing the typical 15% off carrot dangle with email subscribe popups. Not only because it doesn't make sense in terms of offering a potential first time user a discount on something they don't have a connection with but also because it leads to a customer base that doesn't care about the brands mission which in turn leads to higher returns and a customer acquisition cost that's through the roof…just to name a few.

I'm currently focusing on our email list, and email marketing strategy. What companies have you seen, or interacted with, that you think are doing this right and why? What are your thoughts and views on email subscribe popups? What email lists do you subscribe to that are adding value to your life and how are they going about providing that value? How often do you like to receive emails? What percentage of those emails are asking you to buy versus being more content focused?

I'd love to read through any brain vomit you'd like to spew into this thread and greatly appreciate anybody who's willing to let me dig into how they perceive marketing, and email, efforts of companies nowadays.

Advice on how to grow my small business

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:13 AM PDT

One year ago I quit my job and started a home maintenance business in Canada. I do landscaping, pressure washing, gutter cleaning and window cleaning. Today I paid off the last of my debt from buying all my tools which is a pretty big milestone for me. My goal for the next year is to grow the business by beginning to hire employees. Up until now I've been doing all of the advertising, quoting, scheduling, customer service and doing all the work I book on top of that all by myself. It's pretty exhausting. I'm making good money, between $400-700 Canadian per day but I'm starting to burn out a bit, physically and mentally. Ideally, I would find and train 2 guys for next summer and have them do most of the work for me, while I spend more time on advertising (I deliver flyers door to door and I've had amazing results from it) and growing my customer base. I know this will lower my income by quite a bit, at least at first, but long term I think it's the only solution. Can't keep this up just by myself as I get older. I should mention though that from November to February I don't think I could keep employees working full time, so it is seasonal. I don't have a business licence or anything, basically all I have is workers comp insurance for myself. I imagine I would need to get more organized when I start hiring employees but I don't know exactly what I need to do. My goal for the next 10 years is to eventually hire a manager so I can slowly back away from the work and just collect a cheque every month so I can focus on other things.

Is my goal of stepping back from the day to day of the business realistic? Any advice on growing the business, or what i need to do to become a legitimate business in the eyes of the government is greatly appreciated. I'm not a smart man, just very motivated to escape the 9-5 working life.

Section of my cover letter for a social media position that shows the basics on how to tackle a marketing campaign for your small company.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 09:43 AM PDT

I applied for a startup related to crowdsourcing a food source, they need a social media manager to help grow their customer base. This is what I wrote in my cover letter, revealing a plan on how I would run their marketing:

I fully understand the job posting, and this is how I would accomplish the mission at hand:

-Identify potential influencers on Instagram and grade their social impact based on their own content, their followers and the interactions they receive. Then, contact influencers of interest and develop a marketing relationship with them. The same can be done across other platforms, though it sounds like from the posting that Instagram is the most important platform now.

-Develop ads and shareable content for several platforms and run small tests on each. From there continually shift resources to ads that are highest performing and follow up with A/B tests in order to improve them further. Creative problem solving, continuous measurement, and experimentation will be the keys to success.

-The current trend I will like to take advantage of is the use of micro-influencers. These micro influencers have smaller followings, but higher rates of engagement from their followers. On the first day, I would be interested in developing a list of 30-50 micro-influencers to potentially work with. I would keep track of all time and money spent working with them and report on the net (positive or negative) returns. A challenge for this will be devising a way to interact with these micro-influencers in a time-efficient manner that makes sense based on the value of new customer.

-If it doesn't exist already, I would be interested in creating an ad performance dashboard with a program like Microsoft Power BI that can help decision makers in the company quickly see the performance metrics of various ads and social media efforts that are running.

[Advice Needed] Business ethics on starting a company that provides a sub-service for the company that already employs me.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 09:23 AM PDT

I work for a company that provides a service. We subcontract out to another company that does a sub-service for us. I want to start my own company that does the same sub-service as I believe I can do it more cheaply. I would not be doing any work that competes with my parent company, but rather providing a service to them at a cheaper price than they currently pay to an existing sub-contractor.

Assuming I don't use parent company time, resources or trade-secrets, are there any legal/business complications that may arrise if I try to go down this path? Ideally I would like to start my LLC but am unsure of how to navigate the ethics side of this. Any help and advice would be great.
