Same company we bought in 1988. Same family running the business. But we changed our state license number. So is it wrong or can we get in trouble with the IRS if audited if our logo date is different than our true paper date?

Looking for ideas to sell a company generating revenue - Advertising/Media Company Located in NYC

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 08:48 PM PDT

I am posting this through a number of mediums.

I am with a angel capital firm and we have acquired the assets of a distressed advertising/media company that is still generating revenue, with a very small monthly burn. However, it is in need of some TLC and nobody within our firm has the necessary background to get it back up and running again. I am currently exploring options to see if I can sell it or get rid of it somehow.

Looking for feedback from individuals to see which platform you'd recommend for brokering the sale of a business.

Wanna share a real story from an US friend (There are some low investment business ideas and tips)

    Posted: 09 Jun 2018 02:25 AM PDT

I was honered to be invited by a kindergarener friend in kindergarten to celebrate the World Children's Day with lovely kids on 6/1, and saw many beautiful impressive wall murals on the garten walls. I thought my nephew would love these murals in his room and I could gift him on his coming birthday, so I asked my firend the painter's contact information. She gave me Peter's phone number. I thougt is would need at least 2 days to paint my nephew's room, so I made appointment with Peter few days earlier. But he told me he could finish in 2 hours and sent me a catalog to pick the picture for painting. He advised to paint on the exact date of birth during my nephew's schooling time. I was suspecting a lot how he could be so nonsense? These beautiful pictures are all looking very hard to paint! When the day came, I was super stunned by his unbelievable work. I picked the M&M picture to decor the room, he took some pigment, simple but special papers I have never seen and some other painting tools. As what he said, he finished in 2 hours! 2 hours without a pen? Are you kidding me? After further talk with Peter, I know there is a new technique for wall painting called no pen mural (http://www.nopenmural.com)**. ** WIthout a pen, without draw skills, everybody can make a full wall painting in 2 hours. According to Peter, each customer he has paint for were very happy by these murals, and most of his customers are like me who have seen the paintings somewhere then contact him for service directly. I as a business man was very curious about how much profit he could get from one mural. He said more than 150% and he didn't spend any franchise fee to work with the Chinese exclusive manufacturer. That's incredible! I invested $10k for my own business 6 years ago and I am sure there are much more for some other business men, but this no pen mural is ZERO! Now you understand what and why I am so interested in no pen mural, and I believe it is becoming the trend in future.

Home address as registered agent = junk mail?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 06:06 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I posted this in /r/Entrepreneur as well. I'm trying to start a small (micro even) business out of my house where I want to sell crystals and minerals online after buying wholesale.

I live with my parents and I don't want to list our home address as the registered agent because Im nervous a deluge of junk mail will arrive.

Does anyone have experience with this? Will I get a ton of junk mail?

Asked for a raise, got offered a little lower with the option of profit sharing.

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 05:48 PM PDT

So I asked for a raise and ended up getting a little less with the option of profit sharing on a product we're getting ready to sell.

I'm not sure what % I should shoot for, I was a big part in the development of the product but I also love what I'm doing. Basically I'm not trying to come off as greedy but I also realize I need to get what I'm worth.

Its easy to say to play hardball but I have a home and new family to think of, this is the only time I wish I was 20-ish again where I didn't give a fuck.

Best and/or cheapest version of call monitoring for quality control (babysitting) employees?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 01:40 PM PDT

We're thinking of implementing a call monitoring service for our company of around 15 employees because we'd like to know more about how our employees are dealing with the complicated situations that arise in phone conversations with customers and referral sources. What can you recommend? Does anyone use this? And is it effective and worth the money? Thanks in advance!

Advice about dealing with another business needed.

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 01:00 PM PDT

Not me, but a very close relative of mine. She owns a small bakery (1.5 employees) and twice a week makes soft pretzels for a local microbrewery (much bigger business), so as you could imagine that is a decent amount of money each month. The problem is that the micro brew is run by a bunch of shitheads who have not paid the bakery in almost 8 months now...that is several thousand dollars. I have personally and politely reminded the brewery twice now and they act like "oh shit we'll get right on that!!" and still neglect to pay. The owner of the bakery is scared to be too assertive because it is steady business (when they are paying). I'm willing to talk to them again (and lay down the law if I have to) but I do not know how to actually get their asses in gear. Has anyone had similar problems and/or advice on how to approach them?

What problems are you facing with starting an online business? (Tips for beginners)

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 06:17 PM PDT

This is going to be a very brief overview with information that is hopefully new for you. I'm have a follow up video at the end to show you exactly what my research process is. Stay tuned!

As an entrepreneurship major, the main idea our professors planted in us was that we had to reinvent the wheel, and then create a viral marketing plan that creates an explosive company and last for a few years, and then you repeat. Well, being an entrepreneur doesn't mean you have to reinvent anything. You simply want to find a niche, find a problem or gap, come up with a solution that provides value to the user, and then create a way to inform the user that your solution exists.

Ok, so, entrepreneurship 101 is over, time for the good stuff.

So how do you find a product that will sell well, but won't cost you thousands to market in a competitive niche? It can be tough. Wouldn't it be awesome if there was a website out there that ranked millions and millions of products based on how well they sell online? Well, there is. It's called Amazon. On the bottom of every product page, you will find the 'BSR', or best sellers rank. That is the current rank that product has in it's category. There are many tables and charts out there that will give you an estimated monthly sales based on the BSR and category.

So you're probably thinking 'oh great now I can go search thousands of products and individually check the BSR and sales/month, this will take forever...'

Nope. There's a better way. There are two main programs that expedite product research, allowing you to view the valuable data from each product on the search result page in a single chart. This way you can quickly analyze the top sellers in a niche and decide whether it is right for you. I use JungleScout, it's around $85 i believe, and it's awesome. I actually use it daily. The other program that recently came out for free is Unicorn Smasher. Works the same, monthly sales numbers seem to be a bit lower than JS, but ultimately should work just fine. I just trust JS a bit more.

So now you have the ability to search a product in amazon, click a button and view the monthly sales of the products by page. So how do I know if I can compete?

Reviews and brands. One of the largest factors for ranking (if not the largest) is the number of reviews a product has. When a new product is launched, companies will often do big giveaways in exchange for reviews, which drives down their BSR (the lower the number the better) and gets them better organic ranking, driving those organic sales. So what you want to do is find a niche with a decent amount of monthly sales and not too much competition. Also, if the niche has several household brand names, I just skip it.

Here's my criteria: Top 15 results are at least doing a combined 5k sales/month

Top 5 results have a product with less than 100 reviews

Top 10 results have 5 products with less than 100 reviews

The average price is greater than $20

The product niche has several names (i'll get into this later, but I mean products like 'sponge' are difficult because everyone is going to search that keyword, but 'string lights' could be rope lights. fairy lights, copper lights, etc.)

My goal is to find a niche where I can sell 10 units a day at $10/profit per sale. That's 300 units/month, $3000 profit.

So that's product research on amazon in a nutshell. Once you find 5-10 ideas, track their niches for a few weeks by exporting the data from the research programs. Narrow down your list and see which niche has the least amount of competition on google. Look for opportunities to overtake competitors websites with a nicely-designed and optimized ecommerce website. Your combined sales channels of your ecommerce site, amazon, ebay, pinterest, wanelo, etc. could create quite a lot of income for yourself if you find the right product.

These are the basics to get you started. There are so many youtube videos, facebook groups, and even the Amazing seller (I got a lot of good tips from there), e-books, and even subreddits that will teach you more about amazon, FBA (fulfilled by amazon), private labeling, importing, and so on. As promised, here is my video of how I go about product research and a good amount of tips to help guide you on your path. Now it's your turn to go out and learn more the way that works best for you

Next step in building my small business

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 12:19 PM PDT

But I am now getting tot the point where his is becoming my full time job/career. It's becoming overwhelming with work and I need to take the next step.

My question is, what's the next step I should be taking? Is there someone who specifically helps businesses plan out their future? Do I look for someone to partner with? Do I need to hire an assistant? Etc. any help of how you went from freelancer to a full time business and how you built will help. Thanks!

How do you market to Colleges or Universities?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 11:31 AM PDT

My company specializes in workshopping and presenting. Recently we've tried to start pitching to universities but, no cigar.

Our workshops are about Blockchain Fundamentals. At each university we've pitched to, Ive gathered survey data to prove that their is an interest in learning about it, so I don't think that is the problem.

I think it might be because we are so young. We've been in business for half a year and both myself and my business partner are 20. How do we pitch ourselves to be "the real deal"?

How are you monitoring new competitor products, services, and technologies?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 09:53 AM PDT

    Hi folks,

I am developing some strategies for some competitive intelligence work and could use more and broader perspectives. For those of you that have any kind of R&D responsibilities, I would welcome your input as to the following:

    1. Besides networking and attending trade shows, how do you stay on top of the latest and greatest technologies and competing products and services in your respective fields?
    2. What are the services, databases, etc. that help you with this kind of surveillance in your area?
    3. What do you do when you are in need of some specific expertise? How do you find your experts and niche suppliers?

Basically any thoughts as to the resources you tend to use and research strategies would be most welcome.

    Thanks in advance!

My small biz is failing. Freelancing side gig to revive it?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 08:34 AM PDT

So because of a bad business decisions, my small business is failing. I want to revive it because it has potential but I am not making much money from it now and can't pay my bills. Everyone I talk to says it has potential and I do believe. I just made many mistakes in the past months. I'm thinking of freelance writing to support me until my main business gets back on its feet. I'm worried that when people Google search my name they'll see that I freelance and won't think of my main business as legit anymore so they won't come to me as clients and then my business will fail even more. I am also afraid freelance clients will see that I have a main business and think I don't know what I'm talking about since I have to freelance to support myself.

How can justify freelancing to my main business clients if they see me on a google search so that I don't appear less legitimate or like a spammer? And how do I explain to my freelane writing customers that freelancing is just my side business? I'm so ashamed but need money.

    Micro Entity Corporation Tax

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 05:35 AM PDT

    Hi,

I created a ltd company - to avoid being under the umbrella companies that are set up. I am the sole director, the only wage coming in is mine - as a labourer/FLT driver - CIS is deducted at source. I have just received my CIS rebate and I am very unsure about corporation tax and what I should define as profits etc.

I have paid myself £680 per month when work was coming in and dividends - my income was not impressive. How do I calculate my Corporation Tax at this point?

Thanks for any help offered - can't afford accountant so been doing it myself.
