Got dumped because of CPA exams

    Posted: 07 Jun 2018 08:56 AM PDT

I just want to vent to people that will understand.

I've spent the last year studying for the CPA exams. This whole process has been incredibly stressful and demoralizing. I set a schedule of 2 hours per night during the weekday and one weekend day of studying. The other weekend day I would be completely free. I let my relationship kinda coast during this time and didn't devote as much attention as I should have. Eventually she just became unhappy and dumped me 3 days before my final exam. I have my fingers crossed for the score release on the 27th. I'm so ready to be done; hopefully it will be worth it.

EDIT Thank you guys. I've been beating myself up about it. Your responses definitely make me feel better.

A couple of days ago I asked for advice concerning my visible tattoos for PwC’s SLP.

    Posted: 07 Jun 2018 04:45 PM PDT

I deleted my original post, but I just wanted to say thank you to those who commented and told me to wear what would make me feel most confident. To be conservative, I wore long sleeves underneath the tee for the majority of the program, however, during an outdoors event, I let my sleeve be visible. The only person to comment on my artwork only did so to ask me what my fingers said and to tell me she liked my tattoos. I'm so happy and excited to say that PwC extended to me, and all of us at the event, an offer for an internship. This just all seems so surreal.

After 30 or so rejections, and even more ghostings I received an internship offer!

    Posted: 07 Jun 2018 06:53 AM PDT

I'll be starting as an FP&A intern in a mid-sized company entering an IPO soon.

I'm so grateful and appreciative of finally landing something after getting torn down by all the no's in the last 6 months. For anyone whose been going through the same just please keep applying, and looking everyday. This offer I received after stalking linkedin job postings, and came across this one just moments after it was posted at 2:30am.

To fellow students, so much of this is a numbers game. I became very discouraged initially in the recruiting process, that I began to doubt all the work I'd put in to make myself a competitive candidate for job. Do not let rejections weigh on you nor take them personal. In the end some people will like you more, some will like you less. You just have to find the right opportunities by never letting go of your effort.

I wanted to post this here because I need to vent this but I hate Linkedin posts.

I forgot to ask when I should follow up after my in-person interview last week. How should I ask about next steps?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2018 06:19 PM PDT

I had an in-person interview about a week ago, last Friday, and, due to nerves, I forgot to ask when I should expect follow up. I've only been corresponding with the hiring manager throughout the interview process and have never been contacted by a recruiter, so I'd have to directly reach out to the hiring manager for follow up. To add, it's a pretty corporate gig, not a start-up, so I'm not sure how long thier hiring process usually takes.

Tomorrow, Friday, would be the 7-day mark since my interview. I'd just like to follow up and see when they expect to make a decision. Should I follow up tomorrow, Friday? Wait until Monday? Should I wait until the 2-week mark? What should I write in my follow up?

    M&A Tax Exit Opps

    Posted: 07 Jun 2018 07:50 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I'm a CPA from a midsize accounting firm working in their M&A Tax department. I'm curious what the general exit opportunities are for accountants in this field? I know generally lawyers would have better opportunities (e.g. tax counsel) but besides moving to another PA firm are there any decent exit opps?

Does anyone else get more stressed out during the slow times than during busy season?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2018 06:39 PM PDT

Personally, I wasn't very stressed during busy season. My firm does a really good job of planning schedules week by week during busy season making sure you know exactly what you'll be working on. However, during the summer I've been super stressed, frantically trying to find billable hours. We are still required to get 40 billable hours per week during the summer and it seems like I'm constantly having to stay late just to get 8 billable hours a day.

For accountants in their 20s, what is your financial plan by 40-50?

My coworker told me how he knows a police officer retiring at 48 with a full pension, do you believe a CPA with a financial plan for the future can retire comfortably around 50-55 with a similar pension? Whats your financial plan

What should my summer goal be?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2018 07:02 PM PDT

Y'all have given me some great advice before, and I'm just checking in to make sure I go about this the right way. Thanks in advance.

Long story short, my undergrad degree wasn't in accounting, but I've got basic accounting experience. 3 yrs fund accounting, 1 year staff in industry, coming up on 1 year at a tiny tax office, 1040s and small businesses.

I got laid off from my staff job and decided to go all-in on accounting. Right now I'm in an MSA program at a non-target (but still big 4+others recruited) school, and by mid-July, I'll have taken four classes. I'm doing well thus far (3.8+), but haven't taken intermediate II yet, so don't think I'm bragging.

My plan is to finish this semester, keep working in the tax office, get my resume in order, go through internship recruiting in the fall, and find a new job before tax season, because I don't think I could survive another go-around.

My question is: Is that enough? To come out of this summer with 12 accounting credits and an updated resume?

Also: It may be feasible for me to take a semester or two off and (likely) finish the MSA, especially if I get a summer internship, instead of a winter one. Is that advisable? I can't even imagine what not working would be like, but it might be worth it if I can take an extra 6 months to a year off my timeline. But if a firm would hire me (and give me relevant work experience), the timeline might not matter as much.

Appreciate any advice you have. Thanks!

    Closing/Opening balances

    Posted: 07 Jun 2018 10:08 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I do the books for a restaurant and I need help closing 2017 but there are still open balances for 2016. I received an excel sheet from the CPA with adjustments he made. Would you know how I should create the JE to reflect the correct numbers for end of 2017 and start clean with 2018? I've attached 2 images of the 2016 trial balance.

Help with one question from ACCT101

    Posted: 07 Jun 2018 09:45 PM PDT

Hey guys, can you please help me solve this question from ACCT101. I know that Present Value formula is involved somewhere in here but I have no idea how to use it. Thank you

What is the market value of a $1,000 bond, which has a coupon interest rate of 8% and will mature in 20 years if it is discounted at 6%? Interest is paid annually.
