Why don’t sales managers understand that micro management is the opposite of motivating and productive? /rant

Especially those who have an opportunity to do better. I hate when managers fuck up jobs like this. Is meeting your production requirements not enough? Didn't think I was hired to be some type of propaganda tool for my manager to be perceived a certain way. Fuckin inside sales has too many of these kind of managers. Even the good ones get corrupted eventually. Thanks for listening.

    Posted: 04 May 2018 09:58 AM PDT

First entry into sales: I made millions for my B2B freight forwarding company as a new business and overseas coordinator. Made 50k a year

Made it to top #1 or top 3 vs 200 other Property & Casualty licensed agents (auto/home/commercial insurance) Made 105k a year

Made it to top 3 usually in TechIndustry sales of auto, home and life leads to Advisors 100k a year

Moving to CA September this year, whats my next move?

Goal $150,000+ a year would allow my wife to stay at home (her dream) and start a family.

Re-Negotiating Starting Salary After You've Been Hired

    Posted: 04 May 2018 06:54 AM PDT

Sorry for the title gore. My situation is this, I was hired 3 weeks ago by a SaaS company at starting salary X. I am now frustrated because after I was hired, the commission structure changed immediately, and after initially being told I'd be working from home, it turns out it was an HR mistake. I now am spending hundreds of dollars more a month for the commute. I was not the only one told this, either. However, now that it's clear I'll be making significantly less off commissions, I feel almost like I was bait and switched. I know common sense says to hightail it out of here, but honestly my manager seems honest and reasonable, and since I clearly lowballed myself on false information I think it's not unreasonable to "renegotiate my starting salary". As in, it's not a raise since my original asking price was based on stipulations that are no longer the case. Am I crazy to consider this?

How to go from 0 to number one employee and sales rep in a biotech company within a handful of years? Don't know, then check out this episode, which has hyperlinked time stamped show notes that are clickable and will take you right to the sections you want to listen to! :)

Episode link, which can be found on Itunes, Google play, stitcher, and Tunelin or just subscribe/download through your android app.

Paul grew up underprivileged and with a disabled mom. They lived on food stamps and struggled a lot. Paul says that he wasn't the type of person you would think would grow into success, but that's exactly what he did. Tune in to this episode to hear his story and advice on how he worked to become Employee of the Year at Integrated DNA Technologies (Iowa) and how he has now become the #1 sales rep at Formulatrix (Boston). There are a lot of nuggets of advice and suggestions in here. If you're looking to work your way into biotech, then I'd suggest you start here.

*There was a small edit to the content denoting the cities and the different companies Paul has been successful at. Thank you, Paul, for catching that.*

Timestamped Show Notes (My Top 10 Favorite Sections Have ** Next to the Timestamps):

    5. [ 08:45 ] **How he progressed and the specific ways he pushed himself to learn more, so he could excel after he started.
    6. [ 12:00 ] **How he was able to jump into Excel (pivot tables, basic functions, etc) Powerpoint, and JMP statistical software because he understood the math, which was something that he was uniquely positioned to do.

    8. [ 14:30 ] ** How he would retain the information and ensure it wouldn't go in one ear and out the other.

    10. [ 17:00 ] **Don't be afraid to fail and a great quote on how masters fail a lot.

    13. [ 21:30 ] What he did after he graduated from college, and how hard work paid off in the right industry.

    17. [ 30:30 ] **Suggestions he makes on the specific things you can do to improve yourself: time management, goal setting, and asking great questions.
    18. [ 33:00 ] How he challenges and pushes himself.
    19. [ 34:30 ] **How he would train someone to be great at sales, how to think about it as a transfer of emotion, how to set target goals, and how to tailor your message.
    20. [ 38:45 ] **How he schedules, time manages, and focuses. Also, he finishes right on the minute that we had to talk, which demonstrates his abilities.

Started my first day at a sales company and they refuse to use scripts!

    Posted: 04 May 2018 11:43 AM PDT

They took me to my desk, gave me leads and told me to start dialing. I said sounds good where's the script? "We don't use scripts around here because they're pointless, it's better to communicate with people without one." I was dumbfounded, scripts are absolutely crucial in sales, in my experience, because you have a structure to follow and will know what to say next and can think ahead instead of winging it. I was overhearing my coworkers on the phone and they sounded awful from winging it and hoping for the best.

I don't care what they say, I'm gonna write out a script and use it. What kind of inside sales job doesn't have a script? It makes no sense to me.

IT Sales/solutions engineer to medical device sales?

    Posted: 04 May 2018 10:41 AM PDT

Hi, looking for advice to make a transition to sales, ideally medical devices. How would recruiters in the industry look at my profile? Will they even bother to look at my resume or just toss it out when compared to others? I've been a technology SE for 4+ years selling to large enterprises but took a year off and looking to get back in, but would like to do something different instead, IT solution sales is kind of unfulfilling. Looking for any advice, thanks!

    Haircut for a sales rep

    Posted: 04 May 2018 04:31 AM PDT

Hello guys, I need your advice. I am going bald (27M) and I have buzzed my head at the barber, since it really doesnt look good already with longer hair. However, I look more intimidating and feel it may hurt the image of a reliable person at my work. I work in medical device sales. Are there anyone with the same problem? What haircut do you rock? Maybe you rock a buzz cut and dont notice any difference at all?

    Power Sales University. Legit?

    Posted: 04 May 2018 10:16 AM PDT

Anyone ever had experience with Jason Evans' Power Sales University? My Dad is trying to get me to sign up for it. http://www.powersalesuniversity.com.

It honestly seems scammy to me, but there's very little online about it, the owner Jason Evans (other than his YouTube videos), or the salesman who is trying to get us to sign up. No LinkedIn, no online presence. Dad heard it from an ad on the radio.

Does anybody' elses brains hurt from sales?

    Posted: 04 May 2018 09:17 AM PDT

Well I just started this inside sales job and I'm 6 weeks in. My brain hurts from trying to manage all the things going on at the same time

    • CRM, prospecting
    • orders in SalesCenter
    • getting emails, roping in different partners
    • writing meeting follow ups.

feels like my brain is exploding constantly, aside from the morning dread of 'oh man I have to cold call today and work on my persuasion skills'..

anybody else have the same experience? does the multitasking get easier/better? > should I just go back to doing my previous job - accounting/finance

What do successful leaders and Entrepreneurs do differently in pursuit of their goals? [VIDEO included]

    Posted: 04 May 2018 09:03 AM PDT

    1. They focus on doing what needs to be done instead of worrying about outcomes - when you enjoy your journey in your pursuit of a bigger goal, your efforts become more focused and are more likely to yield results.

    2. They enjoy doing what it takes, to achieve what they want

    3. They focus on giving rather than taking

    4. They look at the bigger picture

    5. They try to make the world a better place to live in - successful leaders and entrepreneurs focus on fulfilling peoples' needs in one way or the other. In doing so, they make the world a better place to live in.

FX salespeople: What is your average performance?

    Posted: 04 May 2018 04:32 AM PDT

Hi there, I am trying to find some numbers, but it is a bit hard, so I thought I ask here around. I am looking for performance related data. How many phone calls? How many people didn't pick up? How many people hung up? How many people said ok, but didn't pay into their account? And how many actually converted?

I would love if someone could point me in the right direction to find the data or can share some numbers from their experience, it would be extremely helpful, as I am currently interviewing for an FX company and I would like to get my facts straight.

Sales person using odd language in internal text conversations and emails.

    Posted: 03 May 2018 06:42 PM PDT

I'm a sales manager for a small division of a beer distributor. I oversee a sales and support staff of six people. With how small our crew is and the nature of our work we have a fairly relaxed atmosphere when it comes to meetings and communication however we all maintain a good level of professionalism, except for one of my salesman.

He consistently challenges me and frustrates me but what has me particularly annoyed lately is his new habit of using childish language in email and texts. Now I don't mean foul language, I mean practically baby talk, example of a recent text conversation:

Me: Let's meet at the coffee shop tomorrow at 10:30 and chat a bit before we hit the first account.

SM: can we meet a lil earlier? Just want to give us plenty of time y'know

Me: sure, let's plan on 10 am then

    SM: Otay!

It's not necessarily inappropriate language but it's quite unprofessional in my opinion. Every time he does something like this I cringe and want to immediately tell him to knock it off, but I always take a breath and wait a few minutes before responding and inevitably I just let it go. However recently it's been going on a lot and I can only imagine if he's talking like that with customers.

This is just the tip of the iceberg with this sales rep too, he has a long list of other odd behavior traits but this one has just recently gotten under my skin and I'm curious how some of you would handle a situation like this?

Selling large packages to corporate businesses....

    Posted: 03 May 2018 09:13 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

It's been a bit since I last posted here, but my position has recently changed and I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out what to do.

So I work for a minor league baseball team in the Midwest, I was formally tasked with selling party packages, suites, season tickets and things of that nature. In the last couple of weeks or so, I've been tasked to start selling the "big ticket" items we have available, and I'm really having trouble even getting started.

Specifically, I'm selling sponsorship agreements and naming right deals. Each deal starts at a minimum of $5,000 going all the way up to $50,000. Right now we have a handful of inventory that our President is really getting on us to sell.

Does anyone have any experience in selling naming rights or any large packages like that to corporate businesses?

I can go into more specifics if needed. Thanks!

Marketing/finance double major vs finance with CS minor

    Posted: 03 May 2018 08:48 PM PDT

    Hi,

So I have enough classes to do either a finance major with CS minor or do a marketing/finance double major. What would you guys recommend? CS could tank my GPA but could potentially be good in terms of selling within SAAS industry. But marketing help s boost my GPA which could be helpful.

Side note: I will be working as an SDR for a company this coming summer if that means anything

SAAS Sales--how to stop getting delegated or lost to committee?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 04:10 PM PDT

Hi everyone, sell a SAAS product that usually gets a good response from the first contact. The problem is that every company I sell to (> 300 employees) has a committee that covers my product area or the contact person wants to run it by leadership (our product is like a network that multiple people in the company will use). Usually I make first contact by emailing a head person who delegates to a junior person to screen what we have. The junior person always is very enthusiastic. But I keep having two problems:

1)Junior person says they will present to committee. They never let me present to the committee myself (I have tried all kinds of ways to let me do it) and say they will do it. Junior person either doesn't follow through or its gets butchered in the presentation and I don't hear back.

2)The delegated junior person says they will work on it but they are lazy, brand new and have no power or don't know the right people to ask, goes on vacation for 3 weeks, and I lose momentum. How can I go back to the head person without angering the junior?

How to go above and beyond with short sales cycle?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 05:58 PM PDT

So at my current position Im selling smart riders to real estate agents and its either a clopen or at most two call close. We have leads generated for us from a company in the Philippines and basically call off that list exclusively. I feel like since my job is almost exclusively cold calling I can only do so much. Anyone have suggestions on how to up my close rate or resources that help you crush it in a job like mine?

Want to change roles, need resume help

    Posted: 03 May 2018 05:39 PM PDT

I do HVAC sales (B2C) and want to move into either a sales management or B2B wholesale role.

I started in the industry in 2008, was a sales manager at a fuel company with a smallish HVAC division from 2011 to 2014. In 2014 I left to go full time with my other business in an unrelated industry. In 2015 I started a contracting business (chimney cleaning/restoration) and ran the two companies simultaneously until the end of last year. They were profitable but not spectacular, and as of January of 2018 I started working for a local company doing HVAC sales and am no longer associated with the other businesses.

I'm 35 with 3 kids and a wife and after a few months of being back in a mostly commission-driven role, I'm looking to change to something with a little more stability, either in management with a larger company or as a rep with a distributor.

In the past I've always managed to land interviews through connections, and I do well at interviews. Whenever I've attempted to write a resume, however, they always look shitty. I'm looking for some advice, or if someone could recommend a resume-writing service that you've used, that would work too. Any help is appreciated.

    How to get referral?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 07:33 PM PDT

    How to get referral?

I do permanent makeup, and I would love to start asking other businesses for referral, and ultimately, leads to sales for me. Like doctors, surgeons, medspa, and other businesses.

I'd never done sales, and I heard it's really tough and would love advice.

What would be the best advice to approach other businesses? Should I call/email before visiting? Should I bring any snacks? What would be a good introduction be? Should I do follow up?

Fastest way to get up to speed at a new company?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 02:59 PM PDT

New company, selling something different but it's in the same industry as I've been working on previously.

What questions should I be asking in order to get me up and running as soon as possible?

I understand we have a person who generates leads and hands them to us. I am guessing it'd be in my best interest to become her best friend. But our CEO was light on details as he is not at all a salesperson.

It's a startup and currently there are only 2 other sales people and it was made known that they hate each other and our CEO wants me to ask one of the sales people any questions I have.
