Where to start & What to do? Sales and Selling

Where to start & What to do?

    Posted: 06 May 2018 10:28 AM PDT

Background: I'm a 24F graduating with my bachelors in Poli Sci this December. I'm very frustrated because I feel like I won't get much use out of my degree. I'm also feeling very lost as far as knowing what to do after I graduate. I transferred from a CC and I have not made any connections at school. I live an hour away from campus so by the time classes are done I'm ready to leave instead of staying around for clubs or networking or whatever.

People close to me always recommend I go into some sort of sales. I have great intuition/people skills, I'm pretty confident, and I'm conventionally attractive/in shape. My only experience with sales is waitressing/bartending & working in a strip club for two years. If I don't hustle guys, smile, and say the right things the entire shift I don't make money. I have always done really well as a dancer even if I wasn't the best looking girl in the club.

So r/sales, what's some good advice for someone with a background like me?

Has anyone ever moved to another country without a job, to pursue greater career opportunities? If so, how did it go for you?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 07:05 PM PDT

Currently living in a small country, small market. I'm in technology sales but want to make a move, ultimately to see how good I am - don't want to be a big fish in a small pond.

I've been contacted by recruiters before, and based off of my success at my current company and at previous companies, I'm sure I'll be fine. But wondering if anyone has made a similar move, and how that went for you.

Next career step advice, yes an advice seeking thread..

What's up sales fam? Advice I took 2 years ago was great and really helped me advance financially, so I come to you again.

To sum it up, I was working in a print management and SAAS position making 50k (not much, but small company) with your advice because I was still pretty green in the sales industry, I moved into auto sales. I have killed it moving 15-25 a month and making 75k/year consistently the past 2 years.

After a couple years, it is time for me to take the next step. With major changes, and poor decisions from ownership with advertising and payroll I can expect, and am already feeling an easy 30-40% pay cut. Some would say to find a new dealership, there are none within a 45 minute drive that I am too fond of. Moving is also not an option with a small family and elderly relatives that I would prefer to stay close to.

What I am looking for is the potential of 100-125k+ outside sales in a market that is not as flooded as the print industry.

Other options that I have considered are:

    1. Finance manager (same issue with not being fond of the dealerships in my area) Have been offered this position, but not thrilled about it.

    2. SAAS sales for a larger company (no BA degree, just associates, ,and pretty tough to get my foot in the door thus far)

Both options are not ideal, but it's a start to my search.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am not hard up for money, and I can be patient in my search. Ideally I would love an outside sales or account management position that involves the powersports or auto industry. Some out of state travel would be nice. Not opposed to being a road warrior. Please don't rip me apart if you don't agree with me, but criticism is welcome in a constructive manor.

Should sales people drive newer cars?

    Posted: 06 May 2018 10:01 AM PDT

Just received a job offer for an outside account manager position. Basically maintain current accounts and look for new ones. I was wondering if clients and prospects will have a negative view on me if I don't drive a nice car. I currently have a 2005 honda civic.

What are your guy's experience with this? I'm 20 years old but have few expenses. Base is 37k with 50k - 60k ote.

From Finance Inside Sales to Software Inside Sales - advice & tips welcome!

    Posted: 06 May 2018 09:45 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I've read a couple threads on here about getting a SaaS job, but most are geared to coming out of college... my situation is somewhat different.

First things first, I'm not from the states, I grew up in Ireland where I didn't get a bachelors, I have an associates in IT (pretty high level)

I have retail sales experience (think best buy), then I worked at banks and credit unions doing personal banker jobs, then I was an account manager at a small business selling high end audio/video equipment and installing them in folks homes, some deals were 100K+ even with one being worth about 2Mill.

Most recently I have been working at an investment firm, I basically call through mostly cold.. some luke warm leads all day, often times 200+ a day. Prospecting and qualifying and setting appointments for an outside sales rep (kinda sounds like BR/SDR roles)

I would like to get into software sales, my ultimate goal is full cycle, prospecting, calling, meeting, closing - but understand I will have to start at the bottom perhaps.

I plan on applying for jobs in December. Is this a fools errand or can I get a job if I promote myself correctly?

What can I do between now and then to help me to get to my goals?

I'm a little older, I'm 28, but I'm driven, so age is just a number.

    Many Thanks,

    Tim

I work in RV sales and have only ever done business in person. Is there a way to prospect in my field?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 02:11 PM PDT

I get all of my customers from craigslist or them finding our website it seems like (and WoM). I was wondering if there's another way to find people who are the right kind to want an RV.

    All help is appreciated thanks.

    Career Advice - B2B Pref

    Posted: 05 May 2018 08:51 PM PDT

    Greetings,

I'm looking to start my B2B sales career and am having some trouble getting some footing. Namely, I'm the sole provider for a family of 5 and need some form of base pay of 40k or so at a minimum. I see posts on here a lot of the time of people who say that if you have a degree you should be able to get these sorts of positions, but I'm having problems finding these positions in my marketplace (Raleigh, NC area). I've been watching job boards for over 6 months now and all I'm seeing are jobs for either full commission B2C sales, or Insurance positions with a 12-24k "base" with pretty negligible commission plans (I've interviewed at a few and worked at one for a couple months). I had a B2B sales job for about 3.5 months selling specialty measuring equipment (8-15k avg) to contractors but even this job only had a 12k base (I ended up leaving as the company was only 6 people, 2 of which were sales and the training/mgmt was non-existent).

In general I feel I am a pretty bright guy. I graduated around 10 years ago with a high gpa in business admin & econ, bounced around jobs a bit (worked for a couple contractors, ran a part-time cleaning company on the side, did office work for awhile as a Medicare auditor). As far as straight sales experience, I did painting estimates for a little bit, went through Edward Jones training camp (although quit before going live), a couple months at a State Farm office, 18 part-time months doing sales for the cleaning business, 3 months selling the measuring devices (was top seller my 2nd month), currently about a month into doing home renovation sales (in home, 1 call closes...full commission).

I suppose I'm looking for some guidance as to whether I would qualify for a B2B position with a decent base salary and decent OTE (would prefer at least OTE of $65k to make ends meet but am really looking to grow and be making six figures as soon as possible). Also, any help with search terms or any other places to find these sorts of positions (I've been mainly using Indeed, craigslist, monster). As far as the field goes, I would prefer not insurance.

    Thanks for your time.

How do I get into software sales?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 05:31 PM PDT

I am 35. I have a degree in marketing that I have had for many years but never worked in marketing. Couldn't figure out how to get into marketing. I applied many times and was turned down. I currently work at a warehouse and have no sales experience but I have an interest in selling computer software because I hear it can be lucrative. How can I break into software sales?

What kind of sales jobs exist within the music industry?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 06:29 PM PDT

I've been browsing /r/sales quite a bit recently and have seen "sell something you're passionate about" thrown around quite often. I'm super into electronic music and was wondering if there is any crossover between the two.
