Rental car scraped by another car in parking lot. Rental was reserved and paid for by prospective employer. Next steps?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 05:13 PM PDT

Husband is in LA for a job interview. Rental car was arranged and paid for by the company interviewing him. He was having lunch somewhere and he saw another car nick the rental. Other car was trying to park, rental was just parked. They exchanged insurance info. So what are his next steps? Who are the people he should be calling? Does he need to make a police report? Does he also need to call the person who arranged for the rental from the company?

What liability insurance should I get? (UK)

    Posted: 04 May 2018 03:13 AM PDT

I'm operating as a sole trader, and the work I do is very mixed - it can be programming/electronics/fabrication/audio/video production as required. I go under the blanket title of "creative technologist". So far, most insurance I've looked at is in clearly defined categories in which I don't fit in (e.g. plumber/builder/engineer). What policy should I get and who from? I'm based in the UK.

    Edit: punctuation.

Driving record has a ticket and accident on it that aren't mine.

    Posted: 03 May 2018 06:03 PM PDT

I am really confused about what to do. I got my own insurance policy today and it didn't look like it was going to be too bad until she ran my license and VIN and it went up like 100$ a month because of a supposed car accident and ticket I got on the same day in December of 2016. This did not happen to me. I have no memory of this. I spoke with my family and what could have happened is that around that time my brother rear ended somebody. He gave her our insurance info and we never heard from her again so we moved on, the police didn't get involved (hence my confusion about the ticket). I called geico and he said I need to order my driving report and send it to them to get the incident removed. I pay for my driving report and of course the ticket and accident are on there. I know this was not me. It's possible that it was the incident my brother got in, but not sure because he doesn't recall receiving a ticket. Is there anything I can do about this? Who should I contact to get more info or get this corrected? If I could see more details about the incident I might be able to figure out what happened but all the report gives me is that it was a failure to yield violation.

Please help. I'd like to get this off my record and save myself some money on insurance which is already pricey because I am a new driver.

How to get a Diminished Value Claim?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 09:44 PM PDT

I recently got my car back from an accident. (My car was park outside my house on the street and some girl hit my car and ended up with about 14k worth of damage. I drive a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited) I just got the car back and I wanted to talk to insurance companies about getting some money for the value I lost.

I went to CarMax and an AutoNation. Both parties said my car was valued at 19k trade in and 15k trade in. The car was valued pre-accident at around 23k. I lost about 4k-8k worth of value and I'm trying to get this money.

I'm trying to get this money back but I called both my insurance and the girl who was at fault's insurance and both seem to barely budge. I have all my reports and values so I have a reference point.

What's the next step? I'm going to call my agent in the morning and I tried calling StateFarm (Her insurance) and they just said email them with "proof" and they will go from there. Is there anything I can do to try and get some money back?

    edit: I'm in Colorado

How to approach dental care when changing plans

    Posted: 03 May 2018 11:50 AM PDT

I have 2 dental procedures that need to be done. I'm currently on Delta Dental (plan A), I don't remember the exact plan. I am changing insurance with a new job soon, to a different Delta Dental plan (plan B). Should I max out my plan A benefits on procedure 1, and use plan B's benefits for procedure 2? Or would Delta Dental notice that I've maxed plan A's benefits and discount those from plan B? Are there other considerations? Thanks

[VA] Minor fender bender, at fault. Police report made. Should I have insurance handle it?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 10:14 AM PDT

I got into a minor fender bender this morning. Light turned green, the vehicle in front of me hesitated, and I bumped into his rear fender. The bolts on my licence plate scratched his bumper in two places. His vehicle is brand new, so he insisted on calling the police. The officer made a crash report, no ticket given.

When he was wrapping up, the officer suggested we handle it like gentlemen and not go through insurance. I was very keen on the idea, since the scratches are on a lower plastic piece that can be replaced for $~250 parts and labor (I called around to body shops and found out). But now the guy says I'm also responsible for a half inch scratch in the paint on his lift gate. I find it very hard to believe I caused that scratch, but I'm in a bad position for arguing things. The lowest estimate he has is just shy of $500.

After reading on this forum, I learned that my deducible only applies to repairs made to my car. Since my car has zero damage, I'm now thinking I should just submit it to insurance, especially since he insisted on filing a police report. I am not entirely sure, but my insurance company will find out about the accident anyway through the police, and that my insurance rates will go up anyway. Is that correct? If so, I might as well just have them handle this.

EDIT: thank for the comments below. I contacted insurance and made a claim. I will update if anything interesting happens.

I can't decide between these four Long Term Disability Insurance Options. Which one would you pick and why?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 08:24 PM PDT

    Age: 31
    Gender: Male
    Salary: $140,000/year
    No Debts.
    Career: Sr. Software Engineer.
Occupation Class: Standard's occupation class for me is 5A, Mutual of Omaha is 6A, Guardian is 5, and Principal is 5A.

I'm undergoing the process of getting a long term disability insurance plan. My current employer has no group plan. I've decided on this plan from The Standard. I am planning on keeping this plan until the termination rate as I'm getting the best possible rates with The Standard.

The only thing I can't decide on is how much of a cost of living adjustment rider I want and if I want it to go to age 65 or age 67. The cost of living adjustment rider is capped to either a max of a 3% or 6% increase per year.

The plan is Standard's Protector Platinum Individual Disability Income Insurance Plan. These are the features:

    • Monthly Benefit: $6,650
    • True Own Occupation
    • Presumptive Disability Benefit
    • Partial Disability Benefit
    • Recovery Benefit
    • Compassionate Care Benefit
    • 4% Automatic Increase Benefit
    • Unlimited Coverage for Mental Disorder and/or Substance Abuse
    • Survivor Benefit
    • Guaranteed Renewable
    • Future Purchase Option Rider ($4,000 option pool amount.)
    • Noncancelable Rider
    • Indexed Cost of Living Rider - 3% cap or 6% cap, indexed to CPI-U.

Here are the premium breakdowns for the portions I'm having a hard time deciding on:

    Annual premium(5% discount):

Max Benefit Period 3% COLA 6% COLA
    Age 65 $2,508.95 $2,758.86
    Age 67 $2,689.37 $2,966.65

    monthly costs:

Max Benefit Period 3% COLA 6% COLA
    Age 65 $219.53 $241.40
    Age 67 $235.32 $259.58

These are the maximum payouts of the plans assuming it his the 3% cap or 6% cola cap every year:

Max Benefit Period No Cola 3% COLA 6% COLA
    Age 65 $2.70m $4.64m $8.30m
    Age 67 $2.89m $5.09m $9.57m

Which one would you pick and why?

    Any experiences using "Insuremyrentalcar.com" ?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 07:17 PM PDT

    Hey yall!

I'm going to be renting a car for about a month, and am interested in purchasing a one-trip rental insurance policy, rather than using my current auto insurance in the event of any incidents. The daily rate offered by the rental company is more than the daily rate I'll be paying for the car, so I was looking online for any third-party alternatives, and unfortunately my credit card's auto rental policy has a max of 15 consecutive days for rentals.

I came across insuremyrentalcar dot com, whose mission statement appears to be simplifying car rental insurance and offering more affordable options. The quote I received from this site for their Premium policy (Rented Automobile Damage or Loss, Road Hazard - Flat Tire Expense, Lost Key Reimbursement, Rented Automobile - Towing Charges, Mis-Fueling, Theft or Damage to Personal Property in a Rented Auto) is less than $200, slightly over $5 a day.

The price is great, but I'm wondering if it's too good to be true. They also don't offer liability- is this coverage very important to have? I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything about this company, or has experience using their services?

    Thanks!!

    Rodent trouble

    Hello fellow redditors,

So long story short I was driving home from work and all of a sudden I see smoke in and coming out of the hood of the car.

I open the hood and see a dead rat who's chewed up the wire to the alternator and the belt before passing away.

I live in Canada and I have insurance with Statefarm (certas auto) with comprehensive insurance. Anyone have experience with this or know if my comprehensive insurance will cover this?

    Thanks guys!

How to get a fair settlement for an accident even though I don't plan to fix my car

    Posted: 03 May 2018 05:31 PM PDT

A while back I was in an accident. I posted about it on r/legaladvice.

Long story short, the other driver's insurance accepted fault. I drove my car to a designated body shop where an employee of the insurance company wrote an estimate for the repairs. It came out to about $3,175. The insurance company guy suggested to me that it might be better to just take a check for that amount and not fix my car, seeing as it's 14 years old and probably isn't worth that much more than what it would cost to fix the damage.

Seeing as the damage is purely cosmetic, I thought he made a good point, but I wanted to make sure their offer was representative of what it would actually cost if I were to fix the car. So I took it to a shop outside of their network to get another estimate, and they quoted me about $3,650.

So my question is, supposing I get a few more estimates that are in line with this figure -- am I likely to persuade the insurance company to pay more for the damages, even though I'm not going to actually fix my car? Or am I better off just accepting the offer that's already on the table?

    Thanks!

    Insurance company misconduct?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 04:06 PM PDT

Two years ago I was hit by a texting driver that ran a red light and totaled my vehicle. None of the witnesses stopped and so she was able to lie her way out of it. I just had liability insurance and so I never received any compensation for the damage to the vehicle. Both insurance policies were with the same company. I was initially told by her adjuster that they couldn't determine who caused the accident. After an argument with her I was sent a letter stating that they had suddenly decided to blame me for the accident. It seemed clear from the tone and timing of the letter that it was in retaliation. The strange part is that I was never charged for the accident to my policy. When I called to follow up they said that I was determined to be 0% at fault and she was 30% at fault. The agents at the insurance company couldn't explain that discrepancy and kept saying that it's weird. They kept transferring me to different people in the company and refused my requests for printouts of the documents. They whole thing seems very sketchy. Also my understanding of the type of accident indicates it's usually an all or nothing proposition. In other words how can she be 30% responsible for running a red light? Any insights would be appreciated. Thank you

Is there such a thing as supplemental insurance to go with a high deductible plan? I need to have surgery and the hospital and surgeon wants the funds upfront. I've met about $1000 of my $6500 deductible and do not have the amount they want on my HSA. I did do a Google search, but I'm having a hard time understanding the terms and comparability with my work insurance.

I have insurance through my employer (health, dental, vision, life) -- what should I take advantage of before I leave the company? Do I need to worry about the life insurance?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 01:44 PM PDT

Hi there, insurance newbie here. I'm 21 years old, working full time but returning this fall to complete my undergrad studies.

I was employed about 8 months ago, and through them I now have Anthem Blue Cross health and life insurance, and Blue Shield dental and vision insurance. I plan to leave the company when I've worked here for one year and secured my letters of rec for grad school.

When I got the insurances initially, I took my butt straight into the dental office (long overdue), took advantage of a few low cost talk therapy sessions, and got a general checkup.

Is there anything else I should take advantage of before I lose these insurances? I have never even looked at the life insurance, as I simply have no idea what that does and how that applies to me at a healthy 21 years old. I've also never gone to an optometrist, which I suppose I should do while I'm still insured.

Is there something specific I should do before I lose coverage? And what the heck was the point of my life insurance/ should I do anything upon closing that account?

I have about 4-5 more months before I move on, at which point I do not plan on paying for anything beyond a very basic medical insurance,

    Battle with insurance company

    Posted: 03 May 2018 08:57 AM PDT

Hi I'm sorry if this doesn't belong here, but I'm looking for assistance in what to do.

Recently I was rear ended, so I was not at fault at all. Reported it to police, since it happened right down the street from the police station, then drove to my dealership. I purposely did this as my car is a lease, and I knew they would tell me what they required before I bothered fighting with my insurance company. As it is a lease, it is required to go to their garage, and their garage is the ONLY certified Honda repair shop in the city.

I called up my insurance company, started the claim, and the guy working there said "okay, this is our garage, take it here." and I said "No, this car is a lease, I already talked to the dealership, it HAS to go to Honda's garage, and they want to REPLACE everything, not mend it."

So he says "okay, well get the quote from our garage." I agreed (which I know now is a mistake).

I head to my insurance company's garage (its Nissan's garage, who I used to deal with and had nothing but issues and was actually asked to leave one time because I paid for high end breaks, and they put used parts on my last car which was a Nissan, and I snapped). They guy looks at the damage, goes "this small piece will be replaced, everything else is repairable."

I laugh and say "No. I already talked to Honda, they intend on REPLACING everything."

To which he responds "no, it doesn't have to be."

I went down got a quote from Honda for the damage, about $4300. The quote comes back from my insurance company's garage at $3200.

I called my insurance company and they say they are only paying what was quoted, and I bluntly said "I told you and made it INCREDIBLY clear that Honda is REPLACING these parts and not repairing them."

To which he responded "Well take that up with the appraisers, the replacements need to be justified or were not paying."

So I called the appraiser at Honda, who I'm waiting to hear back from at the moment.

Now, I am a young guy and Im certain they are trying to throw me around because they think I'm just some stupid kid, when realistically I most likely know more about cars than the guys sitting at the desks (father and grandfather were a mechanics).

I'm just looking for advice on what to do, or if I'm doing everything correctly. Just don't want to head back down to my insurance companies garage and blow a fuse again if I don't have to.

EDIT: Essentially my concern is, if the repairs are not done to Honda's standard, and I give the car back, will I end up having to pay myself because the insurance company argued with me over having the proper repairs done.

However, I received a phone call later in the day from the company telling me that they will be "taking over the fight with the insurance company, as the insurance company's garage is not a Honda certified garage and clearly have no idea how badly damaged the car is."

Thank you for all the help and suggestions.

Drunk driving accident. Is it necessary to report?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 07:28 AM PDT

My niece lives with me and got into a drunk driving accident January 7th. She was at fault and was arrested. Her car was wrecked and she signed the title over to the towing company. She never filed a report with Progressive. Is she REQUIRED to report the accident to Progessive? She has not received any notice from either Progressive or the driver that she hit about any claims. She has been through court and paid all penalties etc. She would like to stay on with Progressive for a minimum amount (because of not having a vehicle) or cancel Progressive outright. Which would be more feasible? And if she cancels, can Progressive come after her if the other driver's insurance company sues even though she had insurance at the TIME of the accident? Thank you in advance for any help on this

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that responded. Well, except maybe the guy that wants to flood me with memes...lol

Filed a claim with Auto Insurance, Claim denied and talk of raising rates

    Posted: 03 May 2018 11:11 AM PDT

    The story goes like this;

I backed my GF's new car into the side of our garage door. Basically its a new place, unfamiliar with her car's width and the backup camera's projected path is a bit off. Either way, I'm responsible.

I filed a claim, and the initial adjuster I spoke with said we'd be covered, and not to worry.

I drop the car off this morning, and the GF gets a call from our Auto Insurance. She texts me and says that I am 100% at fault, and that our rates may be affected.

I havent yet been able to clarify if we were denied or they're proceeding with the claim.

I was under the impression, if they deny our claim and I have to pay out of pocket for the repair, then they cant raise our rates because of a denied claim??

Legal definition of insurance and how is extended warranty is not considered insurance?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 07:56 AM PDT

Sorry, I previously made a post regarding whether warranty (non-manufactured) is considered insurance. However, I should have put it in more context for my argument.

The legal definition of insurance is: A contract in which one party agrees to indemnify another against a predefined category of risks in exchange for a premium. Depending on the contract, the insurer may promise to financially protect the insured from the loss, damage, or liability stemming from some event. source: (https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/insurance)

If we apply the extended warranties (non-manufactured) offered by computer sales people, car sales for malfunction of specific items, how is that not considered insurance?

We can further go deeper into the definition of classes of insurance. (this depends on jurisdiction)

"Product warranty insurance" means insurance, not being insurance included in or incidental to any other class of insurance, against loss of or damage to personal property other than a motor vehicle, that is contracted between the purchaser of the property and an insurer whereby the insurer undertakes for a specific. (source: http://www.fic.gov.bc.ca/pdf/insurance_bulletins/ins_06_009.pdf)

"equipment warranty insurance" means the subclass of boiler and machinery insurance that comprises insurance against loss of or damage to a motor vehicle or to equipment arising from its mechanical failure, but does not include automobile insurance or insurance incidental to automobile insurance; (source: http://www.osfi-bsif.gc.ca/Eng/fi-if/rtn-rlv/fr-rf/ic-sa/pc-sam/Pages/pcIII.aspx)

So can anybody comment based on the context how extended warranty is not considered insurance?

Further, a lot of these warranties are sold by non insurance companies, so has anybody here dealt with the administration of these types of warranties? How do they do the reserving?

Any dental insurance that will cover 2.6k and no waiting period?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 07:19 AM PDT

Total cost of having all four of my wisdom teeth removed, including anesthesia, is $2,660. Now, I don't know if this price is considered reasonable or fair within the realm of dentistry, but I'm seeing the best oral surgeon in my town, and she has excellent reviews, so to me it's worth it. I'm looking for an individual plan that will ideally cover the entire cost, but even if they cover half or a little more than half that is acceptable. Also, it's important that there is no waiting period because I'd like this procedure done ASAP since I've procrastinated seeking treatment in the first place. I called a couple companies with no luck. Delta Dental seemed promising until they said there was a waiting period of 1+ years. This is because they don't want people to cancel their plan after they receive coverage which I can understand, but it sucks for those of us who don't have any intention of cheating. In that case, I'm willing to get insurance that has a commitment period like 1 or 2 years if they can cover me immediately. Sorry, I really know nothing about insurance or healthcare. I just know my teeth are effed up.

Mother's house burned and was ruled a total loss. Her adjuster altered items and ages of things on her content list and falsely calculated her money spent on content. He didn't a clause in her policy until after she accepted a check for a lesser amount. What should she do?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 06:21 AM PDT

This is in Georgia, USA. Cross-posted from /r/legaladvice. I added some things after speaking with my mom further last night.

My mom[54F] lost her home to an electrical fire in January. Her adjusted has been a nightmare from the beginning. Her copy of policy burned with her home, and he said he'd bring a copy for her. He didn't and he just wrote things about her policy on a piece of paper and expected her to accept it. He would not explain anything about her policy to her over email, and would only answer questions on the phone where it wouldn't be in writing. It was over a month after the fire before she was able to finally obtain the long copy of her policy, but that thing is like a book.

When creating her content list, he told her to come up with an average age/cost of bulk items. For example, average age of her blouses is 3 years, valued at an average of $25 per blouse. So she put 10 Dress Blouses - 3 years old - $25 - Total: $250. He changed this to say she had 10 dress blouses that were 8 years old, valued at $15. He would cite comparable items. He was choosing Target/Walmart, but she bought these blouses at places like Kohls and JC Penny. She had things split into dress clothes and basic every day clothes. He lumped all of it together and listed it as standard clothing with a low replacement cost.

She had a solid wood 7 piece bedroom suit that was 30 years old. She found a comparable set valued at $3,600. He also changed the age of this set to be older, is giving her $300 up front for it, and put the replacement cost at $1,300, citing a Rooms 2 Go set that was not solid wood and not 7 pieces. If anyone doesn't now how this works, she is being issued $300 for this bedroom set up front, and when she buys a new one she has to turn in her receipt to get the rest of the $1300. She was in the middle of remodeling and had hardwood flooring in her garage that had not been laid. He removed that from her content list, saying it was part of the dwelling. Those are just some examples, but he did this with MANY items on her list. He either changed ages, replacement costs to non-comparable items, or removed items from the list.

Her content list was set at $153,000, and he depreciated it to $57,000 up front, and $130,000 total replacement cost. She knew there would be depreciation, but she did not expect him to change ages/items. Is that even legal?

He also argued that her amounts couldn't have been correct, saying that her list showed she spent $80,000 in the last 3 years, and with her income that wasn't plausible. She said that first off, those were average ages, some things were older. Also, she didn't purchase all of that content. She inherited an entire apartment's contents after a family member death and had it store, and all of that burned. She had also taken out a 401k loan and a credit card during this time. Some things were gifted. Some things were bought at yardsales. And after she added up all of her content that said 3 years or less, it came to $65,000, not $80,000.

At the same time he gave her his depreciated cost and content list, he also told her he was sending her a check for that amount. She told him no, she's reviewing it and will not cash that check. The check arrived in the mail yesterday.

She had demolition set to begin, and he called her the day before and told her he needs an estimate from her builder first. The money had already been given to her, so she starts questioning why she's getting an estimate for him, and he finally broke out that she could actually get $210,000 in dwelling if she rebuilt her house exactly how it was, but she had already been issued a check for $195,000. She was LIVID that this had never been disclosed to her, because it would have been a no-brainer for to do that instead of building back smaller. She had been under-insured, and the cost of rebuilding her house like it was is more than she was insured for, which is why she chose a smaller floorplan. She had asked multiple times over the months if there is a different amount she can get if she rebuilds back the same, and he told her no until after she deposited the check for the $195,000.

He then told her they will continue paying rent for 6 months, and then lectured her with "As we've talked about numerous times, you should have already had a plan in place to either buy new or rebuild". She told him she did have a plan, but now that's being changed because a clause in her policy had just been disclosed to her and they also made her change her demolition date because they want an estimate.

Also, 1 week after her house burned they cancelled her policy without speaking to her. She freaked out because she still had her mortgage and worried that neighborhood kids or the demo-crew could get injured on her property, and then she wouldn't have insurance coverage for that. She had to fight tooth and nail to get her policy reinstated. They cancelled her coverage again on the day demolition was set to begin.

She spoke with her agent, and he then called her adjuster to ask about things. The adjuster said "Well, I set her content to be able to get $130,000 back." My mom explained that the total number is deceiving, because he gave her really high replacement costs on things that he knows she will not replace, like her antique china and an antique violin, but put absurdly low replacement costs on things that do need to be replaced like furniture and clothes. She also pointed out that he was not giving costs of comparable items, he was putting the costs of the cheapest that he could find of everything. The agent told her that if the adjuster wasn't going to work with her, then to escalate to his supervisor.

So.....what can she do? This guy has made everything a nightmare for her and changed his story and hid things from her multiple times. Now she feels she's being taken advantage of because of her lack of knowledge on things, and I believe she's correct. I know it may not be totally illegal, but the guy regularly makes rude and accusatory comments to her, and often will not respond to emails or voicemails to address her concerns or answer questions.

Any suggestions or what steps she should take? What do y'all think about the way her claim has been handled?

    Blood pressure & Term Life

    Posted: 03 May 2018 06:19 AM PDT

Background: the wife and I are getting new term policies because we've added a few additional children to the brood. On our previous policy, I was rated at whatever the best rating was (super-preferred, or something like that). Just did the medical screening today, and blood pressure came out high (~138/85). Part of that is my normal pressure runs high, the other part is I was running around chasing kids while my wife got her work done, and part of it is I hate needles and so was anxious about the blood draw.

    Questions:

    1. Assuming everything else is good (which it should be), how big a deal is this in terms of getting rated?

    2. My doctor has been on the fence about me starting a blood pressure drug. I think I might go ahead and do it, for the health benefits if nothing else. If I do and it succeeds in bringing my blood pressure back down to a normal level, is it possible to get re-rated (assuming I don't get the best rating) during the term of the policy?

    Thanks!
