Managing 14 chain stores and their online presence. Help!

    Posted: 05 May 2018 10:40 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I recently worked my way into a management position of a local "head shop", but more professionally, a "Tobacco and Vape Shop".

Upon the first week of working, I realized how unorganized all the chains are. There is no inventory books, no accounting, and no reliability for pricing or maintaining our products. They price items in their head by spitballing a good number, and it causes some customers to be charged the correct amount of $9.99 for a product, while another employee of the same store would charge a different customer $14.99 for the same product. Some stores would lose money due to incorrect pricing of our products. Their sole method for finding the resale price is calling the owner via FaceTime and asking, "Hey, how much is a 16oz bag of Gambler Menthol Pipe Tobacco?", and the owner says, "Oh! $14.99 is a good price. Do $14.99". It's a huge issue.

I brought this to the attention of our GM and offered a solution. I offered to create organic photos for all inventory, sort and organize all products with an item number/SKIU/Barcode, and manage all digital aspects of the company including web design, branding, and marketing/advertising. I created a neat "Explainer" video and showed him what I wanted to do for him.

He was so impressed with what I offered, that he returned the offer with a position to manage an entire wholesale warehouse for their chains. This being said, I need some guidance for the right tools and software to begin this process.

I'm a 21 year old who only came into this position to help manage one physical location full-time for $2,000/month. I see the detrimental damage that the company goes through due to lack of organization and reliability and I realized that I will need to invest a large budget to set up the website, create professional and organic photos of our 10,000+ products, and oversee all online activity and sales... all while managing a packing/shipping wholesale warehouse that will sell to online to retail clients AND wholesale orders for businesses.

Keep in mind that it's just me overseeing this. No one who manages the stores can create a spreadsheet, let alone revolutionize the system of management for a business.

    My questions for you are...

    • What's the best inventory management system you've found?

I'm looking for a modern and clean tool that is compatible on all device, including mobile. The endgoal is to create QR Code stickers for our products that can be slapped on a shelf to represent a products with x variables. The point of the QR Code stickers would be so the employees at the 14 different chains could open an app, scan a QR code, and send a request for said item with a specific set quantity. If this software/app could show the variables of each product, (buying price, resale price, picture of item, item description, etc.), it would immediately solve the problems I see with the chain stores.

    • Is there a way to integrate the online retail/wholesale shop (Shopify) with this inventory management software?

    • What POS systems do you recommend?

The cash registers are completely outdated and unreliable for keeping track of products we sell. I was looking at Square's Register, and it seems like an amazing piece of hardware that could keep track of everything. Any input on that?

Again, I'm a 21 year old who is now going to creating the company's brand, website, organic product photos and descriptions, and I am going to oversee all online sales while managing all social media/content curation and SEO/PPC marketing... while managing a physical location. And, this process is going to be ready-to-go in 4-6 weeks once I find the right inventory management tool.

I have a fair knowledge of digital marketing. I ran a dropshiping "glass water pipe" shop for three weeks, (before closing down due to long shipping times for customers from overseas), so these new responsibilities of running a tobacco/vape/head shop is a dream come true for me.

It's a lot of work, and that leads me to my last question:

    • How much should I get paid?

After a budget is set aside for this entire project, I'm curious to know what I should ask to be paid. My GM was hesitant on paying me $2,000/month for managing a physical store full-time, and now that I'm going to be working literally day and night (while moving out of my parent's and relocating for the warehouse) and, I'd love some input on a fair request for future salary. The location of the warehouse is TBA, so I'll calculate the cost of living soon. As for the amount of work I'm doing (constant work on the computer that totals 80-100 hours a week), what do you personally think is fair? This is my first job that pays by salary and not hourly.

    Current Systems of Management

I checked out SnipeIT, but ultimately did not use it after running into an issue with VirturalBox and Ubuntu.

I use Google Spreadsheets and Microsoft Excel at the moment to get the fundamental categories and variations of our products, but something that is clean, simple, modern, and can be used on a mobile app by employees at the chain stores would be amazing.

I have many more links for the tools I utilize, but I feel you'll get the picture.

Side Note: I wrapped up a draft for their branding aspect. It's a modern "vintage" look, and just the first draft from the last hour. Feedback of the draft is appreciated before I move forward with it.

    Thanks for reading.

I appreciate all input on my situation.

r/TryMyThing - if your side project needs users, testers or iterative feedback, post it here!

When you're making something new, it's always hard to find just a couple of people who'd like to try it out - whether that's just for testing or you're looking for a proper initial user base. So I made TryMyThing, and any of you who are yourselves early adopters of cool stuff should come join.

There's a bunch of new content that needs some feedback, so if you're willing to check it out, here's the link.

Worthwhile, Reasonable, Franchises to Consider Buying, If Early Retired

    Posted: 05 May 2018 07:20 AM PDT

Hello, I'm considering an early retirement at mid-50's, after 35 years professional employment in the IT field, and am considering the purchase of some type of franchise, or an existing small business. I of course would like to have the least capital investment, with decent monthly returns, and low overhead, and not have to be married to it 24x7 as if it were a restaurant. Right? Who doesn't. I know there are a lot of opportunities out there, but most seem to be MLM, or too high in capital to get going and not enough juice to be worth the squeeze in the long or short haul, or just are stable good businesses that are worth it as they are under-water, or a saturated market. Perhaps Im better off investing into real estate than sinking capital into a biz or franchise, and become a slumlord. A franchise business that looks attractive to me is the Cruise travel industry and the Expedia Cruiseshipcenters. I'd love to hear some good feedback on quality worthwhile franchises that are great ways to spend working golden years still producing income. Thanks

Should I email 3.8K local contractors to ask what product they want?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 11:17 AM PDT

I have 3.8K email addresses for local contractors. I also have raw building permits data that I think they would be interested in. I want to make the raw data easier for contractors to access and understand. Right now, it's just a bunch of hard-to-read spreadsheets available on a government website that looks like it was made in 2005.

Should I email all 3.8K addresses to ask what they would like out of permits data? And if so, how can I email that many people? If I did, I would note that I saw their email listed on the local government's publicly-available contractor listing database.

Rural, but seasonally popular business ideas.

    Posted: 05 May 2018 11:17 AM PDT

So, I live in a rural area a couple hours outside of large city. We get a lot of people that come here from the city for weekends or sometimes longer. We have a lot of lakes, rivers, walking areas, camping, etc.

What might be some suggestions for small businesses that would be popular with this crowd? I'm really liking the idea of rental businesses, not specifically real estate, but items, such as bikes, canoes, etc.

What brought the best ROI for your Ecom store?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 01:25 PM PDT

Hey Guys. Our sales were over $2m last year mostly on Amazon. Our site was less than 1% of that and not for lack of trying. We sell gift foods. We spent over $100k last year hiring people to "blow up" our site. This money was mostly spent on FB ads that didn't work, design work, reworking the site, and fees for a marketing firm. The ROI was terrible. Amazon sales have plateaued for us and I believe our site is where we want to shift our focus.

My goal now is to do most everything myself. I am looking for the best ROI, below is a list of what I am looking to work on so far, but I'm stuck on what to start with. Keep in mind our average customer is middle age buying as a gift. 3/4 are women. At present we are not marketing at all. Our site average conversion rate is 3% and we sell 1 to 4 units per day. Our margins are about 30%.

-Add blog to site then blog

    -Test different flyers/promotions in shipments

-SEO - work on organic search engine ranking

    -Adwords

    -Bing PPC

    -FB Ads

-Snail mail coupons/promotions (we have 40k+ addresses)

    -Press Releases

    -Dropshipping our products

-Social media posting - We have 8k followers on FB and 1k on IG

    -Affiliate marketing

-B2B - our products make great corporate gifts/promotional items

    -Membership/loyalty program

-Email -Newsletters and promotions (our email list so far is about 2000)

    -Co-regs

    -Pop-ups

-Tweak site to figure out what products sell best, and where to put them.

-Tweak site to speed it up, it's a bit slow.

Anything we do we will do slowly, thoughtfully, and will test thoroughly. I'm sick of pouring money down the drain. Our site is on Wordpress using Woocommerce.

    eBay affiliate program?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 07:08 AM PDT

Amazon is out of the question for me because waiting for months for checks and hoping they will be accepted is not really appealing to me. Paypal is where it's at. So has anyone used the ebay affiliate program? Are they good? What's the approval process like? What do I need to be approved? Can all ebay products be sold via affiliate marketing or only some?

Agency Owners - How do you come up with annual maintenance cost?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 01:34 AM PDT

    Hello Entrepreneurs,

I own a dev agency and we specialise in custom software development(web and mobile). How do other agencies here come up with maintenance cost upfront when you write a proposal?

I really struggle with this, post delivery, we do not know how much work will be involved. If the client wants any new feature we charge it separately based on the work involved.

So how do you convince a client to signup for monthly retainer?

Ask people if they would pay for your product

    Posted: 05 May 2018 04:45 AM PDT

When building a software product, early on you're getting feedback mostly from people that are close to you - friends & family. One of the dynamics I've seen is that most people will be positive and encouraging out of courtesy.

That can sometimes mislead you to think that you've got product market fit and they would actually pay for it, but a lot of times that isn't the case.

I think it's important to actually ask them if they'd pay for it.

I did a video on this topic here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRHy444XFsw

(Not too familiar with posting in this sub so I hope it's okay to link out to my youtube)

I'm curious what other people's experience is around getting feedback on your product in the very early stages?

I would like to start a haunted house...

    Posted: 05 May 2018 06:17 AM PDT

I live in a place in which Halloween has recently been accepted and is slowly gaining more interest every year. However, one thing that has not been done yet is a haunted house.

I would love to start one, but have no idea where to even begin.

This will be in Europe if it matters.

I could probably put up some money myself, but won't be much. How would I go about on the possibility on finding people that would possibly want to get involved and invest in the idea?

Then the part of finding a place to hold the event, artists for installations, lighting, costumes - and everything else that goes into it.

I would also do hay rides as our family owns a few horses and would be great for more kid friendly/family event.

If anyone has an experience in this type of business, I'd love to talk!

What are your thoughts on hour minimums when taking a contract?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 10:57 AM PDT

I've been freelancing for a few months now, and something that's causing me a decent amount of frustration are tiny, tiny contracts. I usually bill by the hour, and when it takes me 20 minutes to knock out an easy project, I end up getting nearly nothing for it. I was wondering about negotiating/having a two hour minimum for projects.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Two man team with a huge job coming, how to optimize profits. What would be the smartest move here?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 10:50 AM PDT

Ok guys so the rundown: My father and I just got contracted to edit and produce two seasons worth of TV shows at 25 episodes each. We are looking at making about $200k in profit to start between the two. As of right now we are just freelancers, but we are looking at ideas as how to optimize profits and be as smart as possible. My father is wanting to put me on salary and do it as an official business and give me benefits and the whole deal. However, is there a better way to go about this, being as we are only a two man team and maybe do not need to go overkill here. In terms of taxes and all that we want to just maximize profits as much as possible and not have to pay more than we need to.

Would it make more sense to stay independent contractors and pay into benefits, SS and everything else independently, or, him creating a business and paying me salary and everything else?

Should I run Google/Facebook ads for my product?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 10:09 AM PDT

I've made way too many posts about what I'm going to do and now I'm basically about to start but have one question. Should I run ads for my website?

Basically I'm validating a product idea by making a website telling people what it is etc. and then when people go to the "how to buy" page, I tell them I'm looking for some initial funding to get the project started.

Should I do this and then run ads, or should I do it a different way maybe say the item is out of stock when they go to buy instead of showing a funding page.

I basically want to get info from Google Analytics that people are interested in the product and are willing to spend money on it.

    Thank you in advance!

Looking for funds and advisory to start and e-learning platform.

    Posted: 05 May 2018 09:42 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I want to start an eLearning platform in particular topics that I don't see out there. If possible something like Udacity.

I'm a software developer but I can't manage to build everything by myself, record the courses, think about the best path for the courses and manage the pedagogy or quality for each of them. So basically, I have the idea but I require many things to start- and I'm not sure where to start. I believe there's a good amount of local public interested in my platform.

What is your advice to help me start?

How to handle small business transaction

    Posted: 05 May 2018 09:27 AM PDT

I am employed as an engineer at a relatively small manufacturing company specializing in custom industrial food processing equipment. We have not been stable as a business for the past year and I have been given the blessing multiple times to seek out other opportunities.

I was approached last week by a family member's employer (a small consumer goods shipping and receiving company), and they wanted to see if I could design and build a few pieces of simple equipment for warehouse assembly of one of the items they sell; a one-time build with possibility for future similar work. I visited them and agreed I could handle the job (I have personal equipment and skills to handle this completely on my own) and gave them pricing and leadtime via email. It is understood I am doing this independent of my employer in my free time.

What is the best way for me to handle this from a tax and liability standpoint? I am really only looking at this to provide some extra income to serve as a safety net if my current employment ends soon.

How to promote a telegram channel?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 12:58 AM PDT

I've created a telegram channel, which I would like to promote in order to gain more subscribers.

In this channel I share some offers from online shops, some have referrals links, some not...

    What I've tried so far:

    • Mild spam in related facebook groups ;) -> very few results
    • Facebook ads test campaign: 100$ -> no results

I'm thinking of creating a website about the niche I'm working on where the main "sponsor" will be the telegram channel.

    Any other idea?
