My mom commited suicide and now her landlord is threatening to sue me Posted: 04 May 2018 04:56 AM PDT Sorry for the grammatical mistakes, I can't type very well now. I'm in CA. Hello, as the title say, my mom commited suicide about a week ago or so. I've been busy with the funeral/will/life insurance thing and havent been able to open my email. I did this today and her landlord sent me an email, three days after she died saying that he'll keep the deposit(which I guess is fair) because of the cleaning/painting/fixing the bullet hole, but that he also wants to be reimbursed because the house value will go down after the suicide and that he and the other tenant(my moms roomate) want financial support for emotional damages He ended the email giving me two weeks to call and negotiate, if not then he'll take to court I'm gonna be honest, I don't know if I can get into a legal battle right now, I'm barely functioning but the idea of calling and negotiating how much my moms death devaluated the house made me throw up. What should I do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 May 2018 07:18 AM PDT Link to old post: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/8fmh2o/fl_att_sales_rep_offered_us_the_wrong_promotion/ We took many of the suggestions that you all gave to us in that post but none of them were working. Finally, we tried /r/nikehoke's suggestion of contacting the FCC. We filled out an online report and this morning, a Manager from the Office of the President for ATT contacted us. She was extremely apologetic, waived the cost of the 2nd phone to make it free, and is giving us $20/mo off of our bill as long as we are a customer. Thank you so much everyone who gave suggestions! We hope that this never happens again, but the fact that we have the receipt that showed the BOGO offer and called them the next day to verify over the phone was a huge help in our case. HOA attempting to foreclose on my home Posted: 04 May 2018 07:56 AM PDT Some backstory here: (This is NC, United States) I purchased my first home last year. It's a townhouse in a brand new neighborhood. We actually purchased it almost a year before it was built. I won't go into extensive detail, but it took us over 4 months after moving in to even start receiving our mail. And even now a lot of our mail never gets delivered. Due to this, I never received anything from my HOA. No copy of the bylaws, no payment vouchers, nothing. When I reached out to them to get information, I did get them to mail me the bylaws, but I never received payment information (how much I owed, how to pay it, etc). Eventually I did receive an email from someone over there telling me that I was behind in my payments and I needed to contact them. I reached out to them about setting up an installment plan for the back-due amounts (which is something their email stated was an option). They never got back to me, and when I reached back out they let me know that it had been sent to a lawyer and I now needed to deal directly with him. Now I've received a letter from the law firm stating that I owe $3,500 (back-dues + legal fees) or my home will be put up for auction on May 30th. I'm sure there are plenty of pertinent details that I've glossed over here, but hopefully someone can give me some guidance here. I can't get $3500 before the 30th, and they stated that partial payments won't stop foreclosure. What should I do? Edit: Just for clarification, I fully understand that there were likely multiple avenues that would have led away from this point. And I am in no way trying to avoid paying the back-dues. The reason I am posting is that I am unable to get the $3,500 by May 30th, and I am trying to determine if there is any legal pathway available to me to prevent foreclosure at least long enough to come up with the money. Thanks for everyone's input. [link] [comments] |
HR falsely told my husband's entire office he failed a drug test Posted: 04 May 2018 07:49 AM PDT During an office party my husband, his coworkers and boss were joking about a few things office finance related. The HR lady, I'll call her Becca, at one point got pissed and loudly said "Well at least it didn't take me 3 times to get a clean drug test." Everyone heard this including the head of the company who my husband works closely with. No one said anything and it seems no one plans to do anything to reprimand this woman. In truth he didn't fail 2 tests, there wasn't enough saliva on the first 2 swabs and they were inconclusive. HR Becca was going to put him down as passed but my husband didn't want any suspicions and insisted on taking another. These were all taken within an hour of each other. HR Becca also called out another employee by name at this office party for not passing right away. I found all this out from the wife of one of his coworkers. I'm so mad and can't imagine what things are being said about my husband's character I want to call up there myself because my husband wants to just ignore it all. What should he do? Edit: we're in Texas [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 May 2018 06:15 AM PDT I live in Maine, in a small town where the fire department is also responsible for health inspections to check on living conditions. I live in a wealthy part of a wealthy town. I recently started renting this place with a few roommates, and through cleaning it out from the last tenant and regular use, we generated a large amount of trash that was supposed to be removed for us. It wasn't removed in time, and a neighbor called the fire department simply to be a dick. A fire marshal or whatever came out to inspect the outside of the property and claimed that he had to come back and inspect the inside of the property as well. He wanted to make sure it was considered 'sanitary living conditions'. My house is clean and neat. There's no reason for him to come inside. I don't necessarily want to refuse him but I don't want him barging through my house and doing whatever he wants either? What rights do I have? Is there a time frame that he's allowed to come in? It's only been 2 days since the last time he was here. TL/DR; fire department came when called by a rich neighbor to inspect our house for 'sanitary living conditions'. What are my rights? Posted: 03 May 2018 10:11 PM PDT Hey All, I sold tickets months ago via a PDF upload through the Stubhub desktop version. This was a high profile event in Washington state and my total payout was >$1k. Thinking that all was fine and good, a couple of days ago I was hit with several charges on my credit card from Stubhub. AFTER I was charged, I got email notification from Stubhub saying that the buyers were unable to use the tickets to get into the event. Upon discussion with customer support, they told me the PDF tickets I uploaded had issues with the barcodes. I pulled up the PDF version from my desktop that I uploaded to stubhub originally only to find perfectly good barcodes. I sent those over to Stubhub and once again was told there was nothing they could do. As it stands, Stubhub has charged me the cost of the ticket sales and "fees" of more than $2.5k. I uploaded my tickets via PDF, reviewed the tickets for accuracy, and clicked sell. What further actions could I have taken to avoid this situation? I am 100% sure that I uploaded the tickets with a full barcode, as I've done countless times before. In fact, I have the PDF to prove that. I sent the PDF to them but they don't seem to care. Customer service was reluctant to help me or listen to my perspective. Its my word against theirs in this situation. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 May 2018 07:31 AM PDT Some backstory, Me and my ex had a 10 year relationship, When I met her she was pregnant with my stepson and we had 2 more boys in the subsequent years. After a falling out we separated 3 years ago and she kept full custody of our sons, Last September my 2 sons (and not my stepson) were placed into foster care after CPS opened a case against her and they determined that the boys were living in a unsafe environment. I filed for full custody back in November 2017 and last week I recieved a notice that my petition for custody was approved and merged with the existing CPS case. Yesterday I recieved a call from a detective regarding a complaint from my ex that I would have sex with her while she was asleep....Which I never did....The detective said he's not going to move forward criminally given the circumstances of the existing custody case, Should I believe him?, How would this affect the custody case? Posted: 03 May 2018 11:15 PM PDT I'll be a senior this year, we moved to Alabama from Utah and I've made some new friends recently and I learned a few go to the school I'm transferring to. It's really small, apparently the entire high school, 9th to 12th is only about 300 students. Right beside the school is a church, and for an hour a day kids have to go to the church and listen to the preacher for an hour. My friend explained it to me like this: "Every year students get to pick 1 elective. They sound cool, like knitting or debate class and whatnot. But within the first week it's announced that they don't have funding, but the nearby Church will help out by providing Bible's for the Bible study elective. But because it's the only elective that goes through, they don't want other kids to feel like the elective they chose doesn't mean anything. So all the kids are lumped into Bible study, and walk over to the Church, which is literally less than half a football field away, and for an hour the preacher preaches to the kids and then after that kids go back to the school for their regular classes." I made a few jokes and thought my friend was joking, and another guy in our group said, "No dude. I'm in 11th grade this year. It's true they've done it every year, for each semester. They did when my older brother was in school to, and he graduated six years ago." A few days later his brother was in town and I was over playing fortnite, I asked and his brother said, "yeah they do that. But it's such a small school in a small community. Everyone goes to the same church, right beside the school. Not just the principal, but teachers, parents, and some of those parents are on the board of education" So just to see for myself, I went Sunday. I met the principal, he was really nice and he invited me to a small group. Said it's hosted by this one family, he mentioned to me that they got kids that go to the same school I'll be going to. So he introduced me to the family and the wife/mom told me she's on the board of education and she is happy that I'll get to meet her son(that was sick that day so he didn't come to church.) it's a little past 1am right now and I'm pretty tired. The reason I waited until now to post is because I told my parents and they said it's probably not true, and that just to wait until classes start and see if that's what's happening there. If it is we can go to a different School my mom said. But it's late and I kept thinking about it. I remember Reddit has lots of communites and when I saw this one I thought yeah I need an answer ASAP. I'll probably wake up around noon but I hope someone can tell me what I can do or what my parents can do if we could sue them or something. I hope it's not true, but it really seems like it. If it is it would be cool to have my parents sue them and we get money from it. But idk how sueing works lol. Thanks everyone [link] [comments] |
(NJ) Classmate threatened with expulsion if she got an abortion Posted: 04 May 2018 02:01 AM PDT So this happened at my Catholic High School. I've recently graduated, but my classmate is still there. She's 16. She was impregnated by another student who doesn't want anything to do with the kid, however, wants her to keep it because he (and essentially everyone in the school) believe abortion to be a sin. She confided in the counselor and teachers, and received a verbal warning from the dean that if she went and got an abortion that she would be expelled. Her parents were told this aswell. My question is: Can the school actually do that??? Here's some relevant quotes taken from the code of conduct: "Expulsion is the permanent removal of a student from the school community. Behaviors that may result in expulsion include, but are not limited to the following; -Inappropriate behavior during Off-Campus activities, including traveling to and from school. -Any offense considered detrimental to the school, its officials or its students. -Seriously immoral conduct (speech, writing, or action). -Scandalous conduct on or off campus outside of school hours." She's heavily conflicted at the moment as to whether to keep the kid or not, with all the pressure from the school and her ex. Her parents are against her having the abortion. For additional background information, it's a very small conservative school (9-12 grade), about 50 kids per grade. Advice on the legality of this would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 May 2018 08:32 AM PDT We rented a U-Haul truck to move the rest of our stuff to our new home. We returned the truck the next morning at 5:45 am, and when we got our bill they claimed we returned it 5 days after that, for a total bill of $400+ dollars. They claim they check the key drop every day, and that there is no way they could have missed the key. Each day that this goes unpaid, it gains a late fee and is steadily growing. It is essentially a he said, she said situation. Can I have them check security cameras of their building (if they have them) or surrounding buildings? I am in no way paying for a truck I wasn't using (nor will I ever use U-Haul again after this fiasco), what are my options moving forward to prove we returned the truck on the day we really did? Thanks in advance for any help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 May 2018 09:57 AM PDT I live in a housing complex in New York City (7 bldgs, 1 management company). For the past 3-4 days (accounts differ), no mail has been delivered in my building. I went to the post office to ask about the situation and was told that the mail carrier refuses to deliver here because she believes the mail room is infested by bedbugs. No mail is being held, so we have no way of getting to our mail unless the management company requests that the post office hold the mail. The mail goes out for delivery every day and simply isn't dropped off because the carriers won't enter the building. When I went to the management office, I was told that the mail carrier "was just here, and is distributing the mail now." That was well over an hour ago and there's clearly no mail being delivered and no sign of a carrier on premises. Do we have any legal recourse here? Is the management company violating any laws by failing to arrange for mail delivery? I've never heard of anything like this and frankly have no idea what to do. [link] [comments] |
Grandfather passed away, extended family threatening our immediate family. Posted: 04 May 2018 08:36 AM PDT Hello, Reddit...please excuse any errors...I am still trying to process everything. Located in Canada. I was informed earlier this morning that my grandfather had passed away a while back. My grandfather lived a year longer than doctors thought he would, and I am grateful for the time I got to have with him. After hearing the news, I made a commitment to spend more time with him, which infuriated some of my extended families. My grandfather made a point to never tell anyone he was sick, as he never wanted to be a burden to them. I found out last year after he had already been suffering for a while. As such, my extended family became quite angry when I came back into the picture as their inheritance and potential gain would be taken away from them, I guess in their eyes. My grandfather all made it a point to tell me that I would never have to worry about anything, as he was planning on leaving everything to me to ensure that he 'passed the torch' and that I was taken care of. The extended family that I am not close to what-so-ever hates my immediate family and has threatened us on several occasions to never visit him again or they would have us arrested as a couple of the extended family members because of his power of attorney for decisions regarding his health and finances. After months of being threatened by them, from them having me arrested for beating me up to saying to me over the phone that they would hire someone to kill me, and my immediate family if we ever tried to see my grandfather again to being told that they were going to sue us for everything we have (and receive upon his passing) as we "don't deserve anything", I ceased contact. One of the few extended family members that actually care about us reached out and offered her condolences to which I just learned that he passed away some time ago. To my knowledge, the will has not been changed in years so I likely am still listed on it, but with the extended family primarily controlling my grandfather's estate and decisions before passing, I have no idea if it's been changed within the last 3 years. Reddit, I have never been in such a situation, and I have no idea where to even start...I have not been contacted by his lawyer yet, as he recently passed away but I have not yet found out exactly when. His passing was indeed confirmed by another relative. Can anyone provide me with beginning steps on where on Earth to go from here? Thank you so much for any advice that you are able to provide, I appreciate it. Again, I apologize if I am missing any details or have not worded some things properly. Edit: Corrected spelling and adjusted a few sentences. [link] [comments] |
Sex Discrimination at my workplace? Posted: 04 May 2018 11:15 AM PDT So I work in Colorado at a pretty big hospital. My team is made up of about 75% men and 25% women. The problem is 100% of the manual labor is done by the men. The women are allowed to do desk work. These women have never once taken a pallet anywhere, taken out the team's trash or did a single project, which typically is a lot of moving boxes, setting things up and tearing down equipment. In fact one of the women straight up said " I don't take out garbage" and yet my boss does nothing. A couple of coworkers I know have noticed this too. Any advice would be appreciated. Posted: 04 May 2018 09:29 AM PDT I am in sales and was a manager. The "opportunity" is that with the decrease in base salary I am seeing an increase in portions of my commission. When asked if I accepted, I told them I needed some time to process. I asked if I declined the change if I would be fired. The boss said yes and HR said I would be effectively resigning (HR recognized they would be on the hook for decent amount in severance pay (1wk salary for every year). I have until Monday to give them a decision. My question is, being FL is a right to work state, if I declined this move can I also decline submitting my resignation so I can receive my severance? Police pressing breaking and entering charges when owner doesn't want to Posted: 04 May 2018 06:57 AM PDT There is a lot of text ahead but I'll try to keep everything brief and to the point. State NC There was an incident between two of my friends that were dating. We'll call them Bob and Lisa. Bob and Lisa would get into arguments as all couples would. Bob would, instead of fighting, want to be alone and go home. Lisa refused to let this happen and would break into Bobs home and force him to talk (were not sure how but she could get through the front lock, no damage). This happened 3 different times and bob called the police each time; not wanting to press charges but have her removed. The fourth time this happened Bob had the police file trespassing paper work to keep her away. The police were always told that bob didn't want to press charges but they weren't having it the fourth time. The police started interrogating Lisa after Bob went inside. An officer said "Man, I wish I was smart enough to break into a smart lock". Lisa replied, "You just got to be smart like me I guess". At this point they put her under arrest for breaking and entering. Bob doesn't want Lisa to face charges for this. What are Lisa's options when going to court, she can't afford a lawyer? Will a public defender be ok? What can bob do to help? [link] [comments] |
Big, leaking hole in the ceiling, Landlord has been "trying" to fix for months Posted: 04 May 2018 05:19 AM PDT Background info: • I live in Baltimore City, in an apartment run by a property management company, they're the ones I have been talking to. • On February 11, during a storm, a bubble appeared in the ceiling in the dining room. I drained it, and informed the landlords. • On February 15, no one had been out to look at it, and a 2'x2' section of drywall fell away from the ceiling, trailing insulation and dripping. (https://i.imgur.com/9YuHjgQ.jpg) • They and/or roofers have come out to look/fix on, 2/19, 2/22, 2/28, 3/8, 4/13, 4/23, and 4/28. To date, it is still a big, leaking hole. • They offered us $200 off rent for April, which we took. When it wasn't fixed by 4/24, I sent them an email explaining our concerns about how we weren't getting the apartment we were paying for, and that, while we know leaks can be tricky, this has been a long time for us to have to deal with this situation, saying I would prefer not to have to go to escrow but don't see much choice. When they hadn't addressed that email by 4/27, I filed for escrow, and informed them. They replied immediately:
I explained:
I asked for $200 off retroactively on March, and $200 off going forward until the issue is fixed, prorated if it is fixed mid-month. They said they won't discuss it until we cancelled the escrow filing, but refused any conversation about it beyond that. Come this Monday, I cancelled the escrow (I know, stupid) and asked for clarification on the terms of the rent. They offered us $200 off for May, but said nothing about March or going forward. I asked about those two things, and today I got this reply:
So at this point, I'm kind of at a loss. I'm hesitant to take legal advice from the people we'd be bringing a case against, obviously, but it is within their industry and not mine. Do you think a judge would rule in our favor? Are they right that it won't qualify for escrow if they have been trying (and failing) to fix the issue for months? How much would legal fees, etc. cost if we were to lose the case? If I need to go back down to the courthouse and file again, I will, but I don't want to waste the money and time if they're right. Help! [link] [comments] |
Girl who wishes she didn't sell her house in Ohio to move to Florida Posted: 04 May 2018 10:32 AM PDT My husband and I moved to the Miami, Florida area in January. Upon moving into our condo, we found many issues with the place. The listing agent for that property also noticed the issues and told the landlord who lives in Argentina. After having about 5 different contractors come into our unit and cut out holes in the walls to find the issue they found it was a major leak in the bathroom. There was water damage and mold in our bathroom but the landlord agreed to fix it. It took the landlord 3 months to send a check to the property's listing agent (whom I believe was working illegally as the property manager as well) because the landlord claimed the money had to go through/be reported to the equivalent of the Argentinean IRS before sending to the US (not sure if that is even true). In these three months, I was asked to withhold my rent and put the rent money for the months towards the deposit to the contractor for the bathroom repairs. I wanted to put this money in escrow, as a just in case, but did not end up doing so. Fast forward three months and the contractor begins repairs on the bathroom, leaving us inconvenienced for two full weeks and in a hotel for one of those weeks (paid for graciously by the contractor who promised a working toilet and shower at the end of each day but realized he could not deliver). I was asked to help oversee the project and even went to select tile with the contractor, something that took an entire day. When he started, we paid the contractor $2000 of the deposit with the agreement to pay the difference of the other $1000 after we knew all our hotel fees etc. we still owed about $900 in rent. Two weeks after the start of the project, the bathroom is now finished. The listing agent for the property told me the landlord decided to pay her $500 for her time and energy for overseeing the project. She told me to write her a personal check and deduct the $500 from the amount we still owed in rent. I told her that I am not comfortable doing that without a written request to do so from the owner of the property and she blew up on me. For all I know, I'll pay her $500 and the landlord will tell me I am $500 short for rent. I did not get in official writing (other than texts) that I would pay the contractors fees and that would be deducted from my rent so I wanted to make sure to do so with this, as it's going to a personal account and technically this agent was not the identifying property manager. To be honest I am so upset about this situation because when I entered the lease agreement, I agreed to pay rent on time each month to the landlord's account. I did not agree to write personal checks to Joe Schmo and take their word that it would be deducted from my rent. I know I am in the right to ask for the arrangement in writing, but what are my tenant rights here? This has taken an absorbent amount of time and energy on my part and I have missed classes, job interviews etc due to all this happening. -Girl who wishes she didn't sell her house in Ohio to move to Florida [link] [comments] |
Monitoring a computer via anti-theft software. Posted: 04 May 2018 07:15 AM PDT I am in Texas. I have a family member who was recently released from prison. He is certified schizophrenic and has been violent towards us and been harassing us for years. We have made police reports, had him arrested, but at the time of his release, he had served all of the required time. Upon his release, we were very afraid of him showing up at our house and becoming violent. Under the guise of assisting him, I offered to let him borrow a computer. It is my computer and I let him know it was my computer and that I use it for work and that I needed it back. It was clear it was not a gift. Before I let him use it, I installed monitoring software on it. I can see screenshots of his usage, his location, etc. He has been increasingly sending harassing emails to multiple people, falsely accusing me and other family members of disgusting crimes, promising to attempt to ruin all of our lives, etc. We are not responding aside from one response: "If you continue to harass us, we will file harassment charges against you and immediately forward all of your emails to the police". then ignoring him. We have been in contact with the police, however they are slow to move and reluctant to do anything. My question is: Since he is an adult, does he have a reasonable expectation of privacy using my borrowed computer? Is my looking at his activity on my computer illegal in any way? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 May 2018 12:21 PM PDT A good friend of mine was in a relationship that went south so she ended it. She wasn't getting along with family she was living with so she moved out of state to be with other family. Things have been going well for her she got a job and is on her feet again. Now she finds out she's pregnant, she let the guy know because she felt it was fair and he's now demanding she move back so they can raise the baby together. She doesn't want to go back especially since she's getting her life together. He's already got a lawyer and is threatening to take her to court she's getting scared. My question is what can he accomplish by taking her to court over this? The court cannot force her to move back can they? How does this type of situation usually play out? Thanks edit - he is in California she's in Montana now [link] [comments] |
Called cops, ended up searching a bag (no warrant) Posted: 04 May 2018 09:24 AM PDT Hi, I'll try to keep this relatively brief. My wife and I got in a big fight (non-physical). It was dumb, we were both really drunk and had been under a lot of stress. I stupidly called the police on in my inebriated state I thought it would be a "wake-up -call" for her. When the police showed up I was on my property with a backpack. The officers (probably 5 total) talked to her and myself for about 20 minutes. I thought all was over with and then one of the officer's went to retrieve the bag in my yard (I had dropped it when they arrived because they had a taser on me and were yelling). The same officer who retrieved the bag asked me if he could look in it and I said no (side note: this whole bag situation had nothing to do with why I called them). He asked me what was in it and I said valuables. He then called to get a K9. After he received word that the K9 could not arrive in a prompt fashion or whatever he said since I was "running" on my property with the bag when they arrived he could search it without a warrant or K9. Long story short inside the bag was a variety of grey area research chemicals (1P-LSD, 1A-LSD, etc.) I had ordered legally online (not darknet) along with some valuables such as our wedding rings. I now have many charges over my head.. Any and all advice is appreciated. State is NC. Thank you. EDIT: Took out part about Miranda Rights since user "DiabloConQueso" clarified that. [CO] Does my neighbor now own my trampoline after the wind blew it into his yard? Posted: 03 May 2018 03:58 PM PDT I have had the police over here 3 times and they said that because it's on their property, I would be trespassing if I tried to get it. During the storm, it was on the fence hovering the property line... I was coming to pull it down back to our yard and he got so angry he yanked it down into his yard, damaged it further and didn't say a word to me. When the police took me over to get it back as it was too windy to move it and then he decided that he wasn't giving it back. Colorado, USA [link] [comments] |
[TX] Spouse visited doctors, was told it was just allergies. Ended up dying from an aneurysm. Posted: 04 May 2018 12:10 PM PDT My partner, who will now be referred to as 'J's', passed away in July due to a heart aneurysm with secondary cause of death as pneumonia . Before i even begin to pursue requesting J's medical records/ possible medical malpractice (or wrongful death) I wanted to reach out for advice. J (at time of death, late 40s) had a heart defect and thus a mechanical heart valve. Due to this, J was also on blood thinners. In January 2017, J began coughing up blood. Small amounts, but J went to the doctor a couple of times and they kept saying it was allergies. J also went to urgent care clinic and they said the same thing. No tests were done (that I remember) they just sent us on our way. J ended up at an ER in early summer after coughing up blood, again. It's important to note J had been at the doctor at least once a month by this point. They found the aneurysm and were prepping for transport when it burst and J coded, eventually passing. I've been adamantly against even looking into this until recently. But it's been pointed out that since, due to J's heart valve, a CT scan should've been completed. Instead J was brushed off. Also worth noting is that the primary care did finally refer him to an ENT, who did schedule a CT that J never made it to. But that was after several months and several visits. My question is - would a medical malpractice or wrongful death be an option? I don't want to even request medical records, or try and get a consultation from over 1000 miles away (I moved states) to go over if there's no point. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 May 2018 12:59 PM PDT I work for a small department store chain that is popular across America. In December, we were short staffed on our stock team. Our stock team is a team of people who strictly work 12:00am - 8:30am and report directly to the logistics supervisor. Because the stock team is its own team, the logistics supervisor is almost like a assistant manager for stock. The day team does not meet the night team and even day supervisors never interact with the night team. I worked here at this particular store for five months before I met the night crew. For clarification, I have worked with the company for five and a half years. I offered my roommate the position on stock team. We clarified with my general manager that we were roommates, but there is no specific rule in the handbook that states roommates can't work together. It only mentions "romantic" relationships specifically. There is a note in the handbook that employees can work with family members under three general rules: a) the employee is qualified for the position, b) it does not effect the flow of the work place, and c) he or she does not directly report to their family member. Since there were no rules about roommates, my general manager applied the rules of family. My roommate works stock team, where she works a completely different set of hours and only reports to the logistics manager. I work 2pm - 10pm as a supervisor who oversees the numbers report for our rewards program and trying to raise those numbers, which does not relate to stock teams. My physical departments are also unrelated to the stock team because they are items I have to stock myself since shipments of these items only arrive during the day and the stock on these items is done by hand (beer and wine). Today, my general manager informed me that after six months of me and my room mate working with the company (both girls. I do openly identify as bisexual, but have a committed and loving husband), I have been given an ultimatum. I can relocate to another store, quit, or be terminated for refusing either. The rule cited by my DM was the clause that specifically states employees can not date if they assume a supervisor / subordinate role in the store. I am a supervisor, but as I said, my room mate works completely separate shifts, reports to a completely separate manager, and I do not ever see or interact with her at work. I have covered for the logistics manager on a few occasions, but when I do, I always keep my relationship with her strictly professional. She does the same. We will only talk on our scheduled breaks or lunches. There is slightly more information to this, but for legal reasons, I can't disclose all the information. All I will say is that my GM has been facing harassment and threatened termination by my DM. He opened an HR investigation against her. I am currently only one of two supervisors, in a store that should have five. I feel my DM may be trying to use my termination as proof that my GM is incompetent and unable to run a store. I have opened an HR investigation against my DM, as I'm definitely not dating my coworker and feel that six months is too late to address the issue after we've proven we can work together with no issue. My GM is panicking at the thought of losing a supervisor. If I am terminated, does the company have the right to refuse unemployment? Is this wrongful termination? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 May 2018 11:13 AM PDT I am a college student at SIU Carbondale, and I have a former friend that is being a complete dick. My former roommate is a friend of his. Last Friday, my roommate moved out. On that day, they completely trashed my side of the room. They emptied buckets of trash there, ripped open my pillow, and hid a variety of my most valuable possessions in various places in the room. Today, I found him in the dining hall and asked him why he did what he did, and he proceeded to call the police, saying I was stalking him, and that I was accusing him of "complete bullshit". As of yesterday, the dick friend has (ostensibly) lied to the rest of my friends about my (nonexistent) actions towards my former roommate and has thus convinced them to abandon me. Lately, this betrayal has resulted in me being unable to focus on my assignments, sleep, or even get out of bed. What can I do? I live in Kansas, while the dick friend lives in Illinois.
