We encourage all our visitors to ask those investing related questions they were always too afraid to ask.

The members of /r/investing are here to answer and educate!

NOTE If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

What's to Love About Emerging Markets?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 12:20 PM PDT

Newer investor here so pardon my ignorance, but what justifies the buzz and hype around Emerging Markets (EM)? I notice it especially on Bloomberg.

The 5-year performance for the MSCI EM Index and an ETF like Schwab EM (SCHE) has been relatively flat for the past 5 years and only pays dividends once a year. What's to love about EM?

Diversity is nice, but doesn't EM have a reputation for lack of transparency? I just feel like I'm missing something as to what makes EM ETFs desirable. Just trying to learn.

Is it possible for the worldwide investing community to become so "sale-aware" that depressions disappear?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 10:17 PM PDT

As investing education increases and more and more people start connecting with affordable exchanges, is it possible that any time downtrends start, those who have been holding cash for "sale-like" prices jump in, only to bump prices back up a bit (or at least stop the fall)? We know that big investors like Buffet always like to have some cash on hand for after huge crashes, but what if the whole world started to think like that?

Consolidating some positions / tax loss harvesting / some picks

    Posted: 31 May 2018 04:06 AM PDT

So, I have too many individual stock positions and I want to consolidate a few. I chased paycom up and bought too much at the 115 ish range to a point it wiped the gains and now I have a loss. Updated ratings are hold and some buys with a price target around 120.

Wondering if its worth just selling it at a loss and putting that money into some better performing positions in order to offset some gains I capture in mid to late January when things were feeling overheated.

Walmart i have an avergage in of like 88 - also likely to take a long time if ever to recover?

Also western digital and EGN were another 2 thinking of getting out of

I was contemplating adding some AKS (although I don't know much of anything about the steel industry), may be a good entry point to crisp?, I always wish I had bought more salesforce at entry but now it seems at a premium?, could always add to msft/adbt/goog/amzn/bzun/rgnx/algn/various etfs (have too much BAC - holding, decent amt of nflx and brk.b (about 1/2 of whats in BAC)

What are your thoughts, basically gives you a snapshot of my holdings with bac being the biggest individual one (but a majority is in broad market, sector and some specialized etfs and funds)

tl;dr: thinking of closing positions in wmt/payc/egn/western dig that are flatish or negative in order to tax harvest gains captures earlier this year, and reposition that $ into other holding.

hypothetical; you get a million bucks. How do you invest for passive income?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:46 AM PDT

I've been thinking about how much money one would need to live off. Assuming a reliable 5% return, I figure about $1 million. (this assuming you also own a mortgage-free home). Is this realistic?

And how would this have to be invested? Different than one would say, $100.000?

This is both a thought experiment and a way to define financial goals for me.

Is $2000 too little to start investing with?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:20 AM PDT

Hi, I'm a college junior and I'm working this summer. While I'd rather spend my money on personal things or take care of some debt, I think it would be worthwhile to start investing and it's not everyday I get a large sum of money like this. Is $2000-$2500 too little to start investing with or is it possible? I'm assuming my returns will be small because of a small investment amount?

How do YOU keep track of your portfolio?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 10:34 PM PDT

I want to consolidate all of my investments into one centralized, user-friendly database or wallet or excel or app....something where I can see all of my positions, both fiat and crypto, in real time value. I want to see each penny tick up or down. Where I can dump my Robinhood, E*Trade, Coinbase, Binance, Chase, Wells Fargo, etc. and see it all at once. Anything like that out there?

What are your thoughts on buying steel?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 05:13 PM PDT

I realize there is a lot of talk going around right now about steel tariffs with Europe and China. But I'm wondering if this might be a good time to buy. Tomorrow is the last day that the US and Europe have to negotiate before tariffs go into effect on Friday. Just wondering what people's thoughts are in this sub. Is it something you'd invest in or avoid? Who do you think has the most to win/lose in the tariff game?

US dollar value - collapse/depression- Inflation vs deflation

    Posted: 30 May 2018 10:21 PM PDT

At the start of the 2008 financial crisis circa early March, the US dollar increased in value and continued so until about late 2008/early 2009 when the Fed started buying mortgage-backed securities etc. After that the dollar declined and remained volatile for 2-3 years before rising again. According to Dent, the dollar was the safe haven asset during the initial tumultuous period, however Schiff argues it rose on account of the fact it was already at an historic low and was due for a correction regardless.

After 9-11 the dollar went up in value sharply (probably related but not sure) but then at the start of 2002, as the dot com bubble burst and the stockmarket collapsed, the dollar was crushed and lost 25% of its value in a year and continued to decline 40%+ until its lowest point in 2008 before the financial crisis.

So how can Dent argue the dollar will be the safe haven asset in the next collapse/depression when it wasn't in 2002 and arguably wasn't in 2008? What am I missing?

Seeking Barron's March 2000 Cover Copy

    Posted: 30 May 2018 10:07 PM PDT

I'm looking for a clean copy (scan, etc) of March 20 2000 Barron's Mag with the cover, "Burning Fast".

This is for a friend, and I'm actually open to buying a copy of the magazine - although I know that he's only looking for a clean (high res) scan of the cover for a presentation. (LINK to low res scan: http://ep60qmdjq8-flywheel.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/burning.jpg)

Any help greatly appreciated. Also - I've tried going to my local libraries and even hitting up ebay/etc to no avail. Thanks.

How to monitor accounting principles when reading annual reports?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 05:55 PM PDT

I have heard that in reading a company's annual report, we should take the reported numbers with a grain of salt if the company is outside US since GAAP (or enforcing them?) are relaxed there. Now my questions are:

    (1) Is it true?

    (2) Is it just about being in US or companies specify which accounting principles they take and then we can check on it?

    (3) Within US are accounting principles different across companies (or exchanges)?

How do you all "stop loss" an options contract?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 11:45 AM PDT

I bought a 1-month put on TZA yesterday using Robinhood, just barely out of the money.

Today, it's in the money, and there's a nice profit available for taking.
(Bought at 0.37, currently worth 0.57)

If this were a stock, I'd put a stop loss and guarantee some profits, but the option still has a full month left in it. I know some of that profit is the time premium, so I'm wondering if it were you, would you book profits now? Or is it generally advisable to let the contract ride out?

Do you have profit targets you usually use for options?
