[CAN] 23M | Need Career Advice, Already Have Great Job

    Posted: 30 May 2018 09:59 AM PDT

Hey guys, i'm new here and looking for a little help...

I'm 23 living in western Canada making good money (~80k/yr + benefits and pension). Problem is I'm maxed out at this level for the rest of my life here, it's manual labour, and I constantly feel I'm selling myself short working alongside literal 60 IQ apes.

I have no degree, and have been researching possible escapes from where I'm at. I've always been interested in entrepreneurial type stuff, investing, and wealth accumulation.

I've read on many other Reddit threads about sales being very lucrative, and I like the idea of working on a transferable skill I can build on throughout a career. However because I need to give up everything I have right now to pursue something like this, I need to educate myself as much as I can.

    • Should I look into getting a degree (if so which major), or is that effort/money better spent on something else?

    • Is it better to start a technical career like being an HVAC tech or software tech, and transition into sales later on, or can you start in sales?

    • Is Canada (BC) a good market for this kind of work?

    • Whats the work life balance like for higher earning sales people (I'm thinking 100k+)?

    • Is sales positions cutthroat? do you worry about getting fired if you under perform one month, stressed out outside of work, etc?

    • Is there any way I can test and see if sales is for me before quitting my job I already have?

    • Whats the good fields to get into, insurance, car lots, construction contractors?

    • If you were someone in my position, what would you do to get started on a lucrative sales career?

Thanks guys, I know my questions are pretty naive but I don't have much experience here.

How much better is being an AE than being an SDR?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 10:42 AM PDT

I've been an SDR for almost a year, and I don't hate the job at all...just really eager to move into a closing role.

My favorite parts of the job are talking to people who actually want to talk to you, answering their questions, etc. And obviously, AE's are doing 95% of that. Any time a prospect starts to ask questions and it turns into an actual enjoyable conversation, it's time to pass it off to the AE.

For SDR's that got promoted to AE's, how much did your happiness at work increase? I understand if it's more stressful/busy, but as for simply enjoying what you do...how much better does it get as an AE?

Best form of lead generation for a luxury car dealership? (New salesman)

    Posted: 30 May 2018 02:18 AM PDT

Likely starting a cadetship soon and I'm interested in finding out the best form of generating leads. Never been involved in sales before so i'd like to get the upperhand early. I'm from Australia if that makes any difference in generating leads.

    Any answers are greatly appreciated!

How to reach out to a potential employer?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 10:15 AM PDT

    Afternoon Reddit.

I work in transportation and recently saw a very impressive demo for an industry specific piece of software. I was so impressed that after the demo I mentioned to my boss that I could sell the product better than their salesman.

Come to find out, effective tomorrow, that salesman will no longer be employed by that company. How would you reach out? I'm US based, and the owner of the company/developer is in Australia. I have no sales experience, but 5 years of experience in the industry.

Used car pricing help - business needs help!!!

    Posted: 30 May 2018 11:37 AM PDT

    Hello!

I'm a 23 year old who owns a pretty small used car dealership.
I'm recently in a financial bind, and my business module has always been about pricing vehicles at a super low price. I believed in selling more at a lower rate, rather than selling less at a higher rate. This is mainly attributed to my vehicles being on floor plans, so if I sell them faster, I don't have as many fees and curtailments to cough up.

I primarily sell vehicles at ranges 6-18k and I am also primarily in a sub prime market so a lot of my deals go to sub prime financing.

I get tons of people trying to haggle me on my cars. It's starting to frustrate me cause I will tell the customers mines quite literally the lowest on the market, and i'll even pull up competitors to show them how much lower I am. On top of that, I include a 1 year power train warranty and I also have a 2 year maintenance deal that covers the basics. So I'm priced lower than almost everyone, and I have all of this coverage, yet people still try to hardball me to the point where I'm making little to no money on my sales.

Maybe I just had some beginners luck, because the first few years I was steadily going up. But as of recent my margins are dropping, and I'm fearing I have doom in my horizon.

So what I'm trying to figure out is what am I doing wrong? Since I primarily do sub prime financing, I thought having super low pricing would pull people into coming to finance, at which point my cash price wouldn't be very relevant. But in the last few months I have been getting some seriously low traffic, and the traffic I have gotten has all torn my prices apart cause the customers believe I have thousands of dollars of wiggle room (i wish).

Looking for buyers and selling with advice here. When buying, do you maybe assume the low priced vehicles have something wrong so you ignore them? Despite them having a great carfax, and seem to be in good condition? Or do you just go to the most expensive ones cause you assume those are the best?
For sellers: what works best for you? I've been considering going in the middle with my pricing, but since times are very trying right now, I don't want to make a mistake and lose my business.
Any information or tips in general would be greatly appreciated.

[SaaS/Gov.] Doing great at my SDR role, but how do I overcome the hurdle of repetitiveness

    Posted: 30 May 2018 11:14 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I have recently started with my firm (5 months) and basically although my title is Business Development Executive, its a cold calling SDR position. I wanted to know what tips and tricks you guys had for overcoming the feeling of not having anything else to do/boredom once you hit your numbers. My quota is 10 new in person meetings per a month and I have consistently hit over that with my lowest being 15 meetings a month and other times maxing out at 25 meetings. I have also won the cold calling/meeting setting competition amongst the entire company who hold my position. Its getting to the point where I am starting to consider more full sale cycle positions because within my company the promotion to an AE role wouldn't occur for another 12 months and I am not having any more integration or training to do more. Sorry for rambling, but I wanted to know how you guys overcame this, made work fun etc.

Stressful District Manager that is way to involved

    Posted: 30 May 2018 06:54 AM PDT

Recently started a new job as a wireless expert (phones salesman) and it has been extremely stressful. I used to work for another mobile company and it was a little more laid back, but I actually wanted some action. I joined this job to better hourly, better commission, and more opportunities to prospect customers. However I am now dealing with a DM from hell. I have a manager over me who I like and has coached me to be more successful. But the DM thinks he is doing a poor job and that I am not learning besides the fact that my numbers have jumped. I feel like there is an arrow aimed at me in every direction. I feel like I always submit my reports, I'm working 7 days a week to cover a store who has no hires. And even though I have one headlight out, I still work until 8:00 and risk getting pulled over. I have no time to get my headlight fixed as I explained to her. She is constantly harassing my manager about me, and her excuse is that she wants me to succeed.

My main question is about stress, what should I do to handle 7 days a week and calls after work?

Best industry to move from telecom

    Posted: 30 May 2018 08:30 AM PDT

6 years B2B telecom sales with 1 company. I sell fiber solutions. Still good money in the industry but seeing a decline in the past year - not just myself, my peers as well. Internet, even fiber is more and more of a commodity and race to zero. There's not that big of a difference between providers - not ones that impact a customer anyways, so it's all about who is cheapest. I prospect, I still even door knock bc I love what I do, I love helping people but I think an industry change will be more lucrative in the future.

Any suggestions on best strategic move? I only have an associates degree which I don't think will hold me back too much but 6 years sales experience + no valuable degree will narrow down my options.

Leave me a message if you are interested.

Are there any tasks successful AEs outsource? (Virtual Assistant type stuff, not Biz Dev)

    Posted: 29 May 2018 02:45 PM PDT

As per the title, I'm moving to a new AE role that involves travel to sell Business to Govt tech in the US (city/county level) and I've been taking stock of what I can improve and automate or outsource in my new role.

Wondering if any other AEs have considered or are already using a virtual or personal assistant to help them with non-revenue generating tasks. I'm thinking research, booking flights, etc. type thing or more (barring any confidentiality or privacy concerns with client data).

I'm job hunting but I want to avoid the MLMs

    Posted: 29 May 2018 04:01 PM PDT

Job agency sites like Reed or Monster tend to conceal the name of their client (fair enough, it prevents the jobseeker from contacting them directly) and naturally, ads for vacancies are written to be as impressive as possible.

I've done a stint with a residential B2C MLM before. Not gonna do that again. They're not exactly upfront about themselves in their initial ads but there are clues (example: "no experience necessary) and I wanted to ask you guys what they are so I know to avoid applying. Thanks!

    Videos for body language?

    Posted: 29 May 2018 04:12 PM PDT

I'm doing d2d right now, started out pretty rough since this was my first sales job. Biggest change I saw was changing my body language. I stood at the door looking like a plank of wood, and now I'll pitch with my hands like I'm deaf. Anyways I'm just looking for a way to improve my body language, specifically hand gestures, because although I'm doing good now, I feel like learning more about this topic can really push me (, and anyone interested) a lot further Edit: it doesn't have to be a video but I think that would help more and be clearer

Why does it make sense/what are the benefits to having more staff on lower contracts than less staff on higher contracts?

    Posted: 29 May 2018 03:21 PM PDT

... if the same number of hours are covered either way? (e.g. having 24 staff on 16 hours, instead of 16 staff on 24 hours)

    Best software for cold emails?

    Posted: 29 May 2018 04:00 PM PDT

I send about 50-100 cold emails per day directly from my Gmail account. For a couple months I've been using HubSpot to schedule these. Hubspot is free, which is nice but I'm needing something a more robust. I'd like something with Mail Merge, follow-up sequences, analytics on open and response rates, etc. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

Advice on career change from post-sales role to "true" selling role.

    Posted: 29 May 2018 02:55 PM PDT

    Hi Sales Superstars,

Long time reader, 1st time posting (just realized I hadn't subscribed until today)... I'm seeking some career advice. I've been an account manager (post-sale) in SaaS for over a year and want to transition to a "true" sales role in technology/SaaS. Upon accepting my current role, I was led to believe part of my comp would be based on upsell, but so far variable comp has only been driven by keeping churn numbers low & completing new-customer implementations within a certain timeframe (we have nothing to upsell). The fact I've had very little true sales experience is disappointing and makes me feel my time here hasn't contributed much to a career in sales. I want to change that.

I'm curious what the community here thinks about what my next move should be. I don't feel I have the skillset to go into a direct selling role, so is it logical that I transition to a BDR/SDR position and essentially start back at square 1? Are there other options if my goal is quota-carrying sales?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions about the above and whether I'm even approaching this transition the right way.

    Thanks!

Email just doesn't work for me. Will Whatsapp/SMS work?

    Posted: 29 May 2018 11:56 PM PDT

Guys, I work part-time at an indie dealership trying to optimize their marketing and sales funnel.

I have been trying to up my game on email marketing but the open rates have been pretty sucky to be honest. I consulted my friend who's spent sometime in the business and he told me to read about email copy - both for subjects and headers. Did that, improved my copy a bit and still nothing!

What do you guys suggest I do?

I'm thinking I'll drop email as an option and start with sms or Whatsapp - you know... just message our previous customers/network/etc about our inventory. Is this a better idea? Or is it frowned upon? And if you do use this as a strategy are there any tools that can help me with this? (I'd like to automate this as I'm not doing full time here)

Is it worth staying in a company that hasn't updated any leads?

    Posted: 29 May 2018 10:53 PM PDT

Hi Reddit, sorry for the shitty format, same old story, on my phone taking a shit.

I do appointment setting for closers, I offer prospects a free meeting with a financial advisor, qualify them and connect them to a closer who's job is to convince the prospects to come into the office to get the free meeting with a financial advisor.

Right now we're on our seventh round on this group of leads and honestly it burns me out quick these days. As I'm writing this, I've dialed 230 numbers so far and managed to speak with 8 people who've answered their phone and my average has dropped from 3 qualified leads a day to barely reaching 1 perday

I've been promised a promotion as a closer 3 months ago, but it keeps getting pushed further as the CEO says he is working on better Facebook leads that come pre-qualified to make sure I have some leads in my pipe line when I start.

Sales people of Reddit, in your opinion, should I continue with this job that currently provides me no new leads, stick it out a little bit longer until the promotion comes in? Or get back to the job hunting grind?

When should I start applying for SDR role (SaaS)?

    Posted: 29 May 2018 02:04 PM PDT

Will be a senior in college this fall and will graduate in may of 2019. I dont have any sales experience, and will be starting an aflac internship (b2b life and health) this fall. Should I apply now or after the internship? Will I have a chance of getting an SDR role or would I need to intern for a lower software sales position first?

How can I improve the sound of my voice on the phone?

    Posted: 29 May 2018 01:54 PM PDT

I've always had problems projecting my voice and being loud enough. When I'm on the phone I have a tendency to get choked up with removes a lot of the depth from my voice. I also have some difficulty annunciating at times. But I'd say my biggest problem is my vocal range, I tend to get very monotone and have trouble adding emotion to my sound.

Did anybody have any similar issues they managed to work through? I'm 22 so my voice will probably change some through my lifetime and I want to develop some better habits. People always just tell me to "speak from your chest" but I can't even fully understand that.

    Any help would be awesome

    Fear that customer walks away

    Posted: 29 May 2018 01:54 PM PDT

First, A customer gives ultimatum (eg, do it or i leave). Provide a set of rebuttal questions to find if its real or unreal?

Second, is there a way to find if customer has real bids or is it just unreal?

Third, how to find if customer & wont be shopping around whatsoever?

I post these questions to Jeb Blount, Jefferey Gitomer, & Mark Hunter etc.
