Biggest Fear Once My Loans are Paid Posted: 03 May 2018 08:38 PM PDT For 8 years my loans have been a drain on my life. When I was depressed about having to live at home, I blamed my loans. When I wasn't pursuing my dreams, it was because I had too much debt. On and on, all the problems in my life were the result of carrying around 80k debt that I could never see ever paying off. Fast forward to now where I have it down to 20k and on pace to have it paid off by November of this year, Im afraid I've put all the blame on these loans and after its over, I'll still feel the same way. For years I thought, "if i just didnt have the debt I would be so much happier." Was it a way to redirect my attention from other problems or does being debt free really change your life? I'll never want to be in debt again but how would I buy a house, or land, or a car without going into debt again? Has anyone else felt this way? How did you feel after you made your last payment? Thank you for the motivation and support! It’s over. Posted: 03 May 2018 05:37 AM PDT It's been 8 great years since I finished school with a total of 45k from undergrad and grad degrees. A year later I met my wife who had 35k from her education. We had 15 separate loans. Total of 80k. Now it's all over. Today, I'm happy to say is the last time I have to make a payment on a student loan. A lot of compromises and arguments why we need to pay $1000 extra some months rather than go on vacation. We used the avalanche method, targeting the smallest principal balances with the highest interest rates to get that satisfaction of paying off loans, but making financial sense also. It's all doable if you are somewhat disciplined. I will unsubscribe from this sub in a few days to put it all behind me. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Steps After Graduation & Exit Counseling Posted: 03 May 2018 11:45 PM PDT I am graduating from undergrad next week and would like to know the specific steps I should take. I'm also going to be a full-time student again in August for medical school. Info: I have Federal Stafford Loans (loan service provider: Great lakes), my parents have Parent Plus Loans that I take care of (Great lakes), and I have 1 Sallie Mae loan. Questions:
Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Will taking out a small ($3000) private student loan affect my financial aid package come Fall 2018? Posted: 03 May 2018 07:17 PM PDT So, here's what's going on. I'm a "mature student" attending a university in Florida. I had attended the school years ago, but took a break to figure out what I wanted to do degree wise. I reapplied for Fall 2016, and I'm now 1 semester from graduating in December 2018 (computer science degree). For the most part, I've gotten all my expenses covered through Federal Stafford loans and various grants, since I'm an independent student. However, this past semester, a few things have really added to my financial burden: 1) In 2017 I got a healthy tax refund from having worked in 2016. I did not work in 2017, so no tax refund in 2018 2) Florida has some dumb law, wherein if you accrue too many credit hours in pursuit of an undergraduate degree, you will be charged a surcharge PER credit hour. So for each credit hour I've been taking in Spring 2018, I paid 50% EXTRA in tuition. 3) I could no longer ride my parent's insurance as I'm now 26 years old, so I had to get insurance through my partner's work insurance. As a result, I don't have as much money as I usually do heading into summer, and my appeal to have my school cover my insurance costs did not work, as they claim they have over-disbursed me this semester. It's also worth mentioning that the "excess hours surcharge" IS NOT grounds for getting more financial aid. I'm trying to secure a paying job for summer, but I also applied to take out a $3000 loan from Wells Fargo. By the time it comes to start paying on it in mid-2019, I'll be able to pay most of it off, and I'll only accrue a small amount of interest on it (~$330). My question is, will getting a private loan reduce the amount of federal financial aid I will receive in the Fall? I'm worried my school will see this money I got to help me cover costs over Summer, and then give me less in return. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 May 2018 10:32 PM PDT Has anyone been ripped off by Sallie Mae and great lake. Other than the obivios. I found them take two payment out per month for Sallie. The great lake payment aren't showing up on my CC statements. Wtf [link] [comments] |
Insurmountable debt, low-paying field; not sure I can stick it out for 10 years for PSLF Posted: 03 May 2018 04:04 PM PDT Hi everyone, This isn't a specific question but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed and would appreciate any perspective and advice. I made some questionable choices. I went to a fancy private liberal arts school for undergrad; my parents helped out with that so I escaped with about $20k in federal loans. Worked full time for about 3 years (paying $273 a month) before deciding to go back to get my Master's in Marriage & Family Therapy. At another fancy private school. Now I've got a total of ~$120K, all in federal loans. (Which I hear are better than private? Did I just get lucky? Why was I able to get all federal loans?) As you can see, I don't understand a lot about what I've gotten myself into. I'm about to graduate and my deferment will end six months after that. The median salary for MFTs in my area is like $42K-$48K. Not a goldmine obviously, but I'm not planning on having kids and don't feel like I need more than that. But I understand I borrowed a lot of money to go into a low-paying field. I know I could work in community mental health and do PSLF, but I'm genuinely worried about burning out doing that kind of work. Any thoughts on what the best way forward is? Or like, how big a mistake I've made? I'm honestly too embarrassed to talk to anyone in my life about this so I don't have a sense of how badly I've screwed up. Thank you for any advice. I know this is a vague post but I want to start preparing myself for the next however-many decades. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 May 2018 05:44 PM PDT For the 2nd time in 2 months, myeddebt.ed.gov has been "unavailable" for a stretch of 3+ weeks (that's right, WEEKS). Can't seem to find any information as to why, so thought I'd ask here. Anyone have any idea what's going on with them? [link] [comments] |
Make full payment during forbearance Posted: 03 May 2018 11:40 AM PDT On a forbearance when switching repayment plans, am I able to make the previous payment (versus $5 due) and have it count toward PSLF? [link] [comments] |
What credit score got you approved for a Sallie Mae private loan without a cosigner? Posted: 03 May 2018 02:48 PM PDT Also: does the amount you're needing to borrow also affect their decision to approve you or not? [link] [comments] |

Seeking a private loan, but I have no credit history and no one to co-sign. What are my options? Posted: 03 May 2018 11:22 AM PDT Howdy, strangers! I'm looking to attend university this fall (and possibly as early as this summer), but I've run into a snag. I can't find a way to finance my education. My backstory is this: I'm a 27-year old man pursuing a degree in Mathematics. I recently graduated with an Associate's from a local community college, and now I'm ready to transfer to a university. Unfortunately, I'm flat broke. I haven't held any kind of steady work, and I have no idea how I can possibly pay for school. Currently, I live with my parents. They ensure that virtually all of my day-to-day expenses are met, but they are also completely unwilling to assist my education financially. This is fine by me. I'm perfectly willing to take out a loan, but every provider I've looked at so far has turned me down. Without any kind of credit history, no one will touch me, and my parents are unwilling to co-sign anything, so now I feel stuck. Not going to school ISN'T an option though. I just haven't a clue how to pay for it. My father earns six figures, and for that reason I've never bothered filling out the FAFSA since I've always assumed my family's income would make me ineligible for any kind of federal aid. Academic scholarships seem out of the question too. As such, I really don't know what to do. Does anyone have any advice they can offer me? [link] [comments] |

Interest is always different - doesn’t make sense Posted: 03 May 2018 07:34 AM PDT Can anyone explain why the payment for each of my loans is he same, but the principal and interest is always divided differently. Doesn't seem to have a discernible pattern. Any explanation for this? [link] [comments] |
