Today I Graduate with a Masters in Accounting! Posted: 04 May 2018 12:00 PM PDT It's been a long year, but somehow I've made it through finals, projects, and general accountancy shenanigans! Now time to get a job and focus on the CPA exam! (please kill me now) [link] [comments]
What the hell do I do with a HS student shadowing me? Posted: 04 May 2018 05:57 PM PDT I'm at a loss. They will be shadowing me for a week in 2 weeks and idk what to do. They're just going to sit next to me and watch me curse at client work papers? Do I give them mindless data entry stuff to do? All I see this doing is making me super unproductive that week. Thoughts from anyone on either side of this? I have no client meetings that week nor anything else semi interesting. [link] [comments]

Always thought graduating with a degree in accounting was just going to be a dream for me Posted: 04 May 2018 01:52 PM PDT But next Saturday I'm finally graduating! I'm turning 28 in a couple months, and always figured that college was going to be a long shot since I didn't grow up in an affluent family. Also, I don't know if anyone here felt like this, but holy smokes this degree has been one of the most challenging (and fun) things I've ever done in my life. I'm actually leaving with a feeling that I learned something, which is great. Best thing is having a job lined up because of our accounting program. Starting as a tax associate this June! I've always been a silent lurker on this subreddit, and usually don't like to boast. But I'm super excited to be getting into this profession, and felt like sharing! [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 May 2018 03:56 PM PDT Just submitted a letter announcing my resignation from my job effective in 60 days and I couldn't be happier. I've been hating going to work for about 8 months now. I'm nervous because I don't even have another job lined up but I had to get out. I just honestly don't like accounting and especially tax. I find it incredibly detail oriented, monotonous, and just boring af. Here's to finding a new career in another industry in less than 60 days! [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 May 2018 06:04 AM PDT Big 4 second year in the private clients division. I cannot get myself over the budget. It is causing me anxiety, depression and incredible stress and I'm asking for your opinions. It seems that every mandate is understaffed. It seems that every budget is "tight". It seems that every job is behind schedule. And it is driving me crazy and making me want to seriously quit. My superiors say take the time to learn and understand what I'm doing, but how do I have time to do that when the budget is tight and I have to just right into another section when I'm done the one I just finished cause we're behind? It feels like my senior is judging me every time I step out of the room because I should be spending time working cause we're blowing the budget. I actually get anxious that I'm taking a shit for too long because the budget is tight. It makes me make careless mistakes and be just a robot and fill out working papers just to get the job done and it actually does not help me understand. I am going over budget on every single section, usually around twice the amount of time it is scheduled for, maybe more. On top of that, I have CPA work to do in the evenings an weekends so I can't just work later and eat hours. I have been getting very painful migraines due to stress and the doctor says I need to reduce my stress. But I am the type of person that in my personal life I manage my time very well. So when a senior says cash should take 5 hours and I am longer than that, I start panicking and getting into my own head that I'm bad at my job and bad for my team and they shit talk me when I'm not in the room. It blows my confidence, makes me wake up at night thinking about the budget, and is driving me nuts because I feel horrible being a detriment to my team not doing the work that I am assigned to do in the time I have and therefore putting more hours on my senior and the rest of the team to do stuff. I am only in audit until I get my CPA. I am taking study leave this summer to write the CFE and am seriously considering trying to get out of audit into another field in the company where I can get my CPA (Tax, Risk Advisory, etc) but I have no idea if those will be any better. Maybe I'm just not cut out for professional services? Help me out please! [link] [comments]
Has any US accountant moved overseas to another country? How's the job hunt there? Posted: 04 May 2018 05:54 PM PDT I'm still pretty young, I only have 3 years of work experience. I am an employee at the Big 4. I may or may not be moving to another country in a year or so. How's the job hunt? What if I don't speak their language? Can I expect similar pay or even high pay for the COL? Also, what happens if I want to come back? Would my international pay/experience make my new salary suffer? If I'm making 70k now, and then I only make 45k abroad (which could be really good for the COL), would I end up having to start my salary over at 50k-60k in the US? [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 May 2018 12:41 PM PDT It's been a long journey to get here but I finally obtained a job as a Fund Accountant barely 2 weeks before I graduate. Taken me 5 years for my masters and it makes studying for the CPA this summer so much sweeter. There is a light at the end of the tunnel! [link] [comments]
Leave big 4 TAS for Alvarez and Marsal? Posted: 04 May 2018 11:52 AM PDT Currently big 4 TAS senior. I like the work but the pay is pretty crappy for the hours I work. And honestly I don't think it's worth it to stay until manager as even they are underpaid for the hours. And it also seems like it's takes 15-20 years to make partner now which is insane to be underpaid and overworked for that many years. A&M offered me a TAS position and pay a lot better than big 4. Wondering what people think of them and if I would hurt my exit opportunities by leaving big 4? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 May 2018 08:19 AM PDT The weather has been warming up this week in the northern US. I've certainly been taking advantage of the first rays of sun this spring, hopefully those of you in audit and tax have been able to escape the office for some fresh air! [link] [comments]
Paths from a small firm to a larger firm? Posted: 04 May 2018 06:19 PM PDT I recently accepted an offer for a full-time position at a fairly small (30 professionals, 4 partners) local CPA firm that primarily does individual and small-business tax work, but also does do some auditing, bookkeeping, consulting, etc. While I was certainly thrilled to be offered the position (particularly given that I failed to receive an offer from fall recruiting) and while I'm obviously not in a rush to leave, I do feel my exit ops out of public would be would be greatly improved by working for a larger firm that has some name recognition. So I guess ultimately what I want to know is: (1) What is a realistic timeframe for making a move to a larger firm? For greater context, I'll have my Masters in August and I'm hoping to have my CPA License by the end of the year. so would having those two things + 1 full-time busy season under my belt be enough for me to really start thinking about that sort of move next year? Or would 2 years be better? (2) What sorts of positions would be available at larger firms? When (right after busy season) and how (online applications? recruiters?) would the best time be to seek them? Any advice anyone could offer would be helpful, thanks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 May 2018 01:46 PM PDT Hello there, I have received a lot of help from Reddit for Core 1, core 2 and PM so far but I haven't seen any tips for Finance elective one Can anybody share your experiences/tips for Finance elective? Thanks in advance [link] [comments]
Does working for the SALT team really suck that much? Posted: 04 May 2018 05:22 PM PDT How are the hours and what type of work will you be doing? What are the exit opportunities like for someone after 2-3 years? All I've seen on this subreddit is to never choose SALT so I want to know why. Should I switch to another tax group immediately? How easy is it to switch tax groups within the firm? [link] [comments]
Quitting... and finding it impossible Posted: 04 May 2018 03:06 PM PDT First of all, if you asked me one year ago if the thought of quitting my B4 would make me sad, I would probably laugh. I absolutely loathe 99% of my team and hate the workhorse mentality my particular firm seems to have in the market. Luckily, somewhere in my two years here, I got to work with a FEW really incredible humans in the group. That being said, I don't find that I am passionate about my work and so started looking for other opportunities that would help me branch out into other fields. Fast forward to today - I told my manager I had an offer from another B4 this week. I told him not because I want a counter offer, but because he's a good person and I didn't want him to be surprised/disappointed when quitting day arrives. Long story short, this turned into me having conversations with partners and senior partners on why I should stay. Maybe I am being naive, but I am really starting to feel the love here and finding it almost impossible not to feel bad about peacing out. Not to mention, these partners have invested hours of time on me this week alone. I don't want to burn bridges, but I also don't think I can stay (money is too good on the other side and the work sounds interesting). My friends that have come and gone have all had severe issues and falling outs with the firm and its people, so quitting and burning bridges was not a problem to them - thus my resources for advice on this are limited. Can I bow out gracefully? Or will I ruin all chance of having the option to return to my og B4 no matter what? [link] [comments]
Leaving Big 4 in the midst of an office transfer Posted: 04 May 2018 09:01 PM PDT Hi Reddit fam, I have been at a Big 4 firm for almost a year now, and a couple weeks ago I requested an office transfer to a different location. My commute is over an hour each way, and I am busy almost all year round with small pockets or break here and there (94% utilization for the performance year, having worked less than a full year). I have since realized that I would rather jump to industry, but HR is already in the talks of my transfer with Partners in my location and my desired location. Would leaving now particularly be burning bridges? I am worried because the industry that I work is in fairly small and niche. Thank you for lending me an ear. [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 May 2018 08:11 PM PDT It was a computer forensic class (i guess as an intro to forensic auditing) that counted as an accounting level for my degree. [link] [comments] |
