Posted: 02 May 2018 12:02 PM PDT We have been living in the lower flat of a home in a historic district of Detroit for nearly a year and were readying up to sign a new lease next week. Yesterday the property manager let us know the owner was getting an appraisal done to refinance. We cleaned everything up and even touched up some marks around the house and what not for the lease signing so the house was in great condition superficially. Last night my girlfriend most likely started a small fire on the porch by ashing off the railing. 15 minutes after she was back inside we heard pounding from neighbors to let us know the porch corner was ablaze. Luckily we were warned soon enough to put it out with just a few buckets of water and a hose, but damage was done to the side of the porch, and some slight burn marks on the porches pillars base. We have no idea what's about to come of this. The porch was in awful condition, falling apart and very old, but the house is relatively recently renovated. One of us has renters insurance but we know that wouldn't really matter here. Any idea of what we can expect in the coming days? We doubt we'll keep the lease and are afraid we might be sued for damage. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Too late for Diminished Value Claim? Posted: 02 May 2018 11:01 PM PDT Hey guys! I have a 2011 Genesis Coupe, and although I've loved this car a lot, it's time to sell it. I'm the second owner and got the car accident-free, but in the time of owning it (5 years), have been in 4 minor accidents. I got rear-ended twice, literally within 2 months time. One time the girl was texting, the other time, everyone in a line stopped and the person behind me had his ABS lock up. The last time, a guy didn't put his car in park and he touched the bumper and gave it a nice scratch, and one time I spun out in the rain with my dad and bent a control arm. We didn't go through insurance for the scratch or the spinning out, but the car still got an accident report since my parents panicked and insisted that we call the police for a report JUST IN CASE, because really one of the rear endings caused $3000 in damage while the other one was $1300, and the bent control arm looked kinda scary because the wheel got some positive camber. Anyway, now that it's time to sell the car, KBB values it at $12,000 due to low miles, but I really doubt anyone would pay $12,000 for a car that has been in 4 accidents, even though there hasn't been any frame damage and 3 of them have literally just been a bumper and the crash bar, the last one being a control arm. The car even passed inspections and aligns perfectly. These accidents happened in 2015 and I spun out in April 2016, and I live in Georgia. As far as my understanding is, the car still has a clean title. We have (and have always had) full coverage through Geico, if that matters. I read that I could take it to a dealership for trade in, and see what they offer me (in writing) vs regular price, and present that to my insurance for a coverage of the difference? Would that still be the case, and would this be an option of sorts, even though I haven't gone through insurance for 2 accidents and was not at fault for another 2? Statute of Limitations says I have 4 years to file if in Georgia. [link] [comments] |
Total loss after most of repairs completed. Posted: 02 May 2018 03:14 PM PDT Hello all. We are searching for some insurance advice regarding auto accident repair. Long story short, accident was our fault and vehicle was taken to a repair shop for an estimate. Vehicle has a lean and we currently owe $15,000. Shop sent their estimate to insurance company for $9,800 and insurance agreed to repair. The shop estimated 18 days to complete and two days prior to the target date we received a text message from the shop to inform us the vehicle was on schedule. At this point we had assumed most of the repairs were complete, but the shop found a cracked engine block and submitted a supplemental estimate to our insurer. It took an additional week for the insurance company to contact us with a total loss settlement for $19,000, which will take care of the loan and leave us with $4,000. We asked my insurance company how much would it be to purchase the vehicle back from them and was quoted $4,000 for salvage value. A different representative from our insurance company said that if we purchase the vehicle back from them for the salvage value, we will be responsible to pay the shop any repairs completed. Is this true? Why would we have to pay the shop for their parts/labor for a vehicle my insurance company accepted to repair and then decided to total? We're confused, since the first person to contact us for the settlement information didn't say anything about having to pay the shop for repairs already done. Sorry for the long post, we are just trying to make a decision as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for any advice! [link] [comments] |
A question for my fellow claims adjusters. Posted: 02 May 2018 09:03 PM PDT I work for a small insurance company and I'll be training soon to write automobile estimates. My boss wants me to eventually set up and manage a Direct Repair Program for the company. I'm looking for some insight from anyone who has wrote auto estimates, dealt with body shops or Direct Repair Programs. Any advice would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2018 08:59 PM PDT So I live in Oregon, and I don't currently have car insurance as I don't have my license quite yet (scheduled to get it mid-june) and I'll be purchasing my first car soon. I'll be going across state lines into Washington to buy a used car. I'm wondering what I should do about insurance since I won't be driving the car for another month likely. My friend will be going with me to Washington to drive the car back down. Should I worry about getting it insured? [link] [comments] |
Should I be getting collision and comprehensive? Posted: 02 May 2018 01:26 PM PDT Hi all, I have just purchased a 2010 Mazda 3 GT hatch and am looking to get my insurance set up. Car was ~5k with 170,000km, no accidents and in generally good shape. I am wondering if i should be getting the Comprehensive & Collision add-ons for a car of this age and cost. Here is what my quotes have been: $109/month including both comprehensive and collision $106/month only collision $86/month only comprehensive $83/month with just basics. No collision/comprehensive I am in the GTA of Ontario Canada. My gut is to take both comprehensive and collision, but is that a good idea with this car? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2018 08:56 PM PDT Curious what's considered insurance and what's not? Car dealership wants to sell me warranty coverage, is that insurance? Computer sales person wants to sell warranty coverage, is that insurance? These types of warranty products are not provided by insurance companies. [link] [comments] |
Homeowners insurance question about payout Posted: 02 May 2018 08:31 PM PDT Located in Houston, Texas. So my house was recently hit with a power surge which took out the control boards on my AC (estimate from the contractor to repair $2800). The insurance adjuster sent out a repair tech and they have "offered" to replace the unit ($13k). So, my question is what's the catch? If I tell the insurance just to pay for the repairs am I in a different situation than I would be if I took the full amount? On the flip side of that, if I take full amount what do I lose (the right to ever make another claim against it? Do I lose that regardless?). I'm fine just having them pay to fix it, but I also don't want to be in the situation where I'm basically just "losing" 10 grand. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
What are the pros and cons of early vs late traffic violation conviction dates? Posted: 02 May 2018 02:18 PM PDT Ticket was from Bronx patrol officer. I'm considering fighting it and postponing in hopes that the officer is a no show. In the likely event that I lose, are there any cons of having the later conviction date from postponing? Also, does the insurance lookback period refer to violation date or conviction date and how is it affected? Seems that if it by date of conviction, and if one fights it expecting to lose would not be a good choice. [link] [comments] |
Hi /Insurance, please help me with my auto insurance Posted: 02 May 2018 07:31 PM PDT So, ill give a little backstory, please excuse my typing as I am on mobile.. On April 19th, as my girlfriend was coming through our community gate the vehicle in front of her stops and reverses and hits the front of our car. I watched in horror from the tow truck I was sitting in behind her. I was getting my truck towed home from a breakdown. The driver who backed into her was very hot headed and blamed us, and refused to give me his information. I took pictures of everything though, and the tow truck driver was witness to the accident. Now, I had to call the General, my insurance company, and they "helped" me find the other drivers insurance based off his license plates. Well, my adjuster said he was insured through allstate, and I needed to open a claim with them. I opened a claim with allstate. Recieved a, quote from allstate. Allstate said to get a quote from a body shop. Fast forward to today. I got a quote from a body shop. My claim with the general was closed. I called allstate and told them I had the body shop quote so we could proceed. She says that the car that I filed against was invalid and not insured with allstate. So basically the claim I filed with them is void. The general is closed now, and my adjuster is on vacation I guess until the seventh. Im scared that I will be stuck with no compensation because of someones errors. I dont know how It could have gotten messed up, I sent my adjuster the other guys license plates in an email. I also dont know how I could open a claim with allstate if they didnt insure that driver either. Im very frustrated with the general, I just got a notice that my premium will be getting a 300 dollar raise, even though I was the one who was hit. Please help me, im so lost and upset, no company is willing to help because they are closed or because I dont have a policy with them.. Thank you in advance.. [link] [comments] |
Likelihood of not getting a payout Posted: 02 May 2018 02:17 PM PDT My wife and I are shopping for a homeowners policy. I was quoted a pretty expensive premium and when I compared them to a local carrier who quoted me half the price the agent gave me this story about how you have to be careful since some companies won't pay out a settlement for years and how their company will pay immediately, etc. How true is that? Are some big insurance companies known for waiting years to pay out claims (for example an entire neighborhood burns down, major claims, etc)? Which ones? edit: thanks for all the replies! Sounds like we're getting a sales pitch more than anything [link] [comments] |
Tow truck company damaged my rear bumper Posted: 02 May 2018 06:52 AM PDT To make a long story short, my car was not registered, I got pulled over and they towed my car and took my plates. Problem here is that the screw was stuck to the plate frame and wouldn't come off and as a result the tow truck driver was barbaric and was yanking at it, in the process of trying to extract the plate from my car, he damaged my rear bumper, I have several deep scratches from where the metal plate frame hitting my plastic bumper. What is the best way to go about handling this issue? I already called geico and described what happened and they are opening a case on my behalf. Anything else I can do? P.S now the car is registered and I have new plates but the damage to my bumper remains. [link] [comments] |

Got Policy Number, but didn't get Company - recent accident. Posted: 02 May 2018 03:22 PM PDT Hi, My old mother, got in her first car accident. She got the plates, the insurance number, the drivers license number, the name, and insurance policy number of the other driver, but she failed to get the insurance companies name. This accident happened in Washington State, and my claims adjuster is having a hard time finding the insurance company, and she can't do a license plate check in Washington for some reason. Is there anything I can do? Their insurance numbers start like this...PPBM0000000000-0 Anyone recognize this format? Also any paid websites that I can use to track plate numbers? [link] [comments] |
Switching insurance from under my dad's name to mine, accidents not on record. Posted: 02 May 2018 09:54 AM PDT So I want to switch my car insurance from under my dad's insurance to my own, I just downloaded my driving record and none of the accidents I have were listed. I looked it up and apparently the DMV doesn't keep accidents on file after 3 years, but I don't want to run into any issues with insurance by not reporting these accidents. I'm pretty sure 2 of them were reported, but i'm not sure whether or not I was considered at fault for them, they happened a while ago. If anyone has information about whether or not I need to report this if it wasn't on my record anymore that would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
I got backed into and now the other persons insurance wont pay for the entire rental. Posted: 02 May 2018 06:35 AM PDT Don't know what to do, I paid $797 for a rental while my car was getting fixed and just got a email saying they will pay $616.....don't know how to fight this, any tips will help thanks [link] [comments] |
how to increase insurance score? Posted: 02 May 2018 12:30 PM PDT Shopping for homeowners and kin insurance website said my insurance score was "good but not great" and as a result added 1k per year to premium. We pay a lot for insurance, and I guess this is part of the reason why. What is the insurance score based on? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2018 12:10 PM PDT Working on getting my house ready to sell. Had two leaks, the first was a slow leak in a pipe in the wall coming out of the water heater that we couldn't see. We made a claim when we replaced the water heater (putting in a new one to increase the value of the home) and later found out that insurance probably won't cover it because it wasn't a "sudden" incident. The second leak is in the bathroom, the valve broke and damage the vanity and wall. The adjuster came and looked at both and priced out the bathroom at $1,500 (with my $1000 deductible) I would get $500, if they honored the claim. I have already fixed the leak and vanity, but the drying company that the insurance company sent out to my house is probably going to charge me about $1000 total. My question is, should I put in the second claim or just eat the cost? I would get some money back to cover my losses, but what would that do to my future insurance premiums when I buy a new house after we've moved? [link] [comments] |
Can I write to the Department of Insurance on my policy? Posted: 02 May 2018 10:35 AM PDT Long story short, my auto insurance wrote me a policy. The guy I was dealing with and who wrote me the initial policy removed two accidents off my report: one for me from over five years prior and one where my sister was rear ended two years ago. My sister is on my parents' policy, but I do live at home. I was told these claims were "deleted" and that the rate for my policy did not consider these accidents. I signed electronically and was being charged my lower rate for two months. This past month, the underwriter changed the determinations on those two accidents and decided to add them back in. I called up when I saw my premium payment change, and I asked what it was (that's when they explained what happened). It turns out there was no change in the determinations on any accident reports, and I did not give them false information. They simply changed the policy because it "should" have been written that way. I understand a policy rate can change if an insurance finds I was lying about an accident or if they discover something on my record that I did not divulge. Can my insurance simply change my rate because they simply decided that whoever wrote the policy did not write it the way the insurance company would have liked (the supervisor told me that "we usually instruct employees to write policies with these claims in mind" rather than deleting them prior to signing a new customer)? To me, it seems like my insurance changed their mind on what should be considered in constructing my rate after they signed me on as a customer rather than because I misled them or forgot to include details of the incidents. Nothing changed in regards to the accidents or what I told them before the policy was written. They just changed whether it was considered in my policy. Edit: I understand now because this is an issue with the agent. I never realized they were separate entities, so tjats my fault. [link] [comments] |
career advice : Currently in account management for large health plan in CA Posted: 02 May 2018 10:23 AM PDT Spent 10+ years in the mortgage industry, graduated from an originator to a producing sales manager to a producing branch manager (P&L). Made a very good living but after my kids were born my priorities changed and honestly I got really tired of working in an environment of really unsophisticated business people and dealing with the nonsense of B2C transaction business. Met with a few people and it became clear to me that the skillset I have would translate pretty well to B2B insurance work. I was offered a position with one of the largest healthcare providers in California. I've been working as an account manager for the company for a couple years now, and honestly the career prospects within the company are all really secure, but not something im particularly excited about long term. Looking at some of the brokerages/consultants we work with and they all have some higher octane career prospects, but I really dont know much about that side of the business. Also, I dont know anything about any of the mid-large brokerages that handle insurance products other than health. I've got a solid resume as a producer/originator and a couple years now of strong work experience in the insurance world working with large group clients (100-5000 member groups). I'd love to hear about options I should look into. any advice or information is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2018 09:58 AM PDT I've been driving my girlfriend's car to work and I'm not on the insurance. I'm trying to form an argument to be added to the insurance. She keeps me off to save money, and also I think to keep from signing the car over to me like she promised. I've grown extremely uncomfortable with this. I didn't mind for a while but I need that to change now. Is anyone able to cite real life situations I can use that shows how bad an idea this is? [link] [comments] |
