My house burned down almost 3 weeks ago... Any tips about what not to miss?

Long story short, my husband and I were at work, kids were at daycare. We are all okay, but we lost everything.

We didn't know until after the fire that we were underinsured for both structure and property. The rebuild exceeds the policy limit for the structure portion so they are paying out the policy limit (check is on it's way) and we are still working on our list of personal property.

We received a quote for demo and submitted that to the insurance but it exceeded the 5% of the structure limit so they only paid that much out. In reading through our policy, I see that they will cover 10% of our limit for getting up to code and another 5% for landscaping. The fire damaged a couple of trees and a large portion of the lawn. But we haven't decided if we will rebuild or buy, so I have no idea how to approach this.

We really want to make sure we aren't missing anything that we can make a claim. We've never had a loss of this size with any type of insurance and are learning as we go. Any advice is much appreciated!

Any car insurance adjusters here? How much damage is this worth on this vehicle?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 10:11 PM PDT

I was really interested in taking over this guy's lease payment. Then I saw the insurance claim on the vehicle and I was quite shocked. Any insurance adjusters here can comment on why the damage is so much? Please quote CAD or USD amounts only. Thanks.

If you can guess the amount correctly of the insurance claim on carproof, brownie points. :)

[California] How low will a subrogation department generally settle?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 08:21 AM PDT

Long story short, I was an idiot and thought I had 50,000 liability when it was actually 5,000 and I never double-checked close enough to catch my mistake. Even though I had regular mechanic checkups my master cylinder failed causing my brakes to lose pressure on the freeway, and I was deemed at-fault for an accident. I was also told that despite my checkups there is no recourse against the mechanic.

I didn't realize I was accepting such a big risk, and I'm a broke college student with $600 in the bank and only pulling in ~200-300/month which at the moment mostly disappears into my health/car insurance, food, and other living expenses, as I pay for everything but my housing.

My insurance company said they would try to settle for the 5,000, but they failed and now the other insurance company (Progressive) is coming after me for the difference, which is $7200.

Progressive told me that typically they would settle for either a lump sum of half the owed amount, or set up a payment plan for the full cost.

I've accepted that I'm basically just getting a expensive lesson in due diligence and will have to borrow some money from family and pay it off with a summer job. I am wondering though if anyone here has advice/experience on how low they would really settle for in a situation like this, as opposed to what they state is standard right off the bat. Will it help if I offer to fill out a declaration of assets or something?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

Looking for individual dental insurance in NJ. I don’t know the exact plan I have with Delta Dental. But I pay 50.00 a month.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 11:10 AM PDT

I started having pain in my upper most area last year. I went to dentist-full X-rays-nothing. I paid bill. Went back a few weeks later, he said it's from clenching. I paid bill. I was told both times they would submit it after I paid. Went back again. Please help!! I think it's my cap and the food trap causing gum pain. So he filled area in between teeth and left gum area alone. Which has made pain worse because it can't floss all the way through and food still gets trapped there. Filling 275.00. I paid bill. I spoke w customer service at Dental Dental-they kept telling me nothing was submitted. Dentist says they haven't paid claim. My teeth are throbbing now and I need to go to the dentist. Don't want to go back to him, and prob need better insurance-thanks for your help.

How Does First-Year Insurance Pay on Claims?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 11:01 AM PDT

Say you were to start selling insurance on your own. How would you pay on a claim during the first year or so during which you may not have enough revenue to support a substantial claim payout?

How do I effectively advocate for myself with insurance company?

I was involved in an accident attempting to leave a gas station in Brooklyn, NY. My car was hit before my front wheels touched the street by a car attempting to make a left turn into the gas station. The turning car was in violation of NYS State VTL 1166c as they were driving the wrong way and then tried to turn left into the gas station. Insurance company is saying I'm partially liable(35%) for the accident assuming I was in violation of NYS VTL 1143. How do I make an argument to reduce my percentage of liability?

[Help] Rear ended by an uninsured motorist ignoring contact.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 08:32 AM PDT

I was at a stop sign when I was rear ended. The accident seemed minor at the time so I did not call the police. He gave me his business card and told me he had insurance. I took photos of everything and his drivers license. Upon professional inspection, the damage turned out to be more than expected.

Now the guy wont answer phone calls. I'd rather not have to pay out of my pocket for my uninsured motorist coverage.

Can I take this guy to small claims court? Any experienced individuals out there who could provide any advice?

AAA home insurance claim not paid in full?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 06:30 PM PDT

Hi all, I have home owner insurance with AAA. Recently made a claim for $35k on damage of my house. Did everything by the book. Had their adjusters come check and contractors document and keep every receipt. They recently came back to me said they will pay $15k out of $35k claim. Basically said they approved for most the stuff but for very cheap price. My insurance contract stated that it covers for $90k. How do i get them to pay my claim in full? Should I get Better Business Bureau involved? Thanks a ton
