How do you build startups involving software development?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2018 12:05 PM PST

    Hello,

Most of my startup ideas involve software developing, for which i have no skills.

How do you usually build your software idea? Do you first wait for investments and then hire developers? Do i need to learn software development for creating a landing page or an mvp product?

Sharing my experience: I just decided stop working with a friend on a project

    Posted: 10 Mar 2018 11:30 PM PST

Few months ago I shared my product idea to a programmer friend and sought his help, he agreed and we stated to share the work, I am also a programmer. Now almost three months down the road I am pissed with the progress. He is not committed enough, I was hoping we would have a faster progress since I thought this is his major strength but the outcome is really poor. We had never worked together on a project before, and I was not familiar with his technical skills. Apparently this was a mistake from day one. I had already gave him warning twice that not I am not happy with progress but didn't feel any difference. Today I decided to end it, since this is obviously not going to work in the long run, even not sure if we will be able to release anything with this pace. It was not fun but it was an experience going through this. Lessons learned: make sure you talk in details about deadlines, amount of commitment, approach to the project, expectations before partnering with anyone even with an old friend.

I would need advice on the hiring process for my company

    Posted: 10 Mar 2018 05:59 PM PST

We have a new company that is fast growing in that industry. I am facing one of the challenges, hiring the passionate employees for my company. So far I could really hire some of the best employees for Digital Marketing, Customer Support, etc.

However, I have failed in few cases where it is impacting company's progress. One thing is, if someone not suitable to our company's mission, I would not compromise with that employee continue in the company.

The current process I follow is, One telephonic interview, then F2F interview in our office, then send our offer letter.

I would be happy to hear some great advice which you found would help me to find the right talents.

Should we pay ourselves post seed round?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2018 05:20 PM PST

So the 3 of us have been working on our hardware/software startup for a little over a year. About 6 months into it we all quit our part time jobs (we are all college students). We joined an accelerator last month and got $50k in seed funding and another $5k from our university. At the end of the program there is a demo pitch day with many investors. We have several LOIs for paid beta projects that we plan on deploying this summer along with an order of 5,000 hardware units (plus monthly fees) in our pipeline over the next 2 years. Myself and our CFO believe that we should now begin to pay ourselves something, as our personal banks accounts are shrinking.
Our CEO has a weird idea that each person should pay themselves how much they spend. e.g. he should make more because he lives in an expensive apartment while myself and our CFO should make less because we are living with our parents to save money. We made a document with our line item expenses and then he told us that's how much we should pay ourselves, so that we just break even.
Is this fair? Originally we talked about paying ourselves $7k each spread out over 6 months but our CEO says that is too much. We then said how about between $5-6k and he also said that was too high.
What is a good amount to pay ourselves, if at all over the next 6 months?

    Advice on naming a company?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2018 05:00 PM PST

So the names I like are taken. I've got 80% of both the backend dev and design of this web/ mobile app ready to go. The rest is finishing the front end and getting design consultation. I hate the name I've been using with my business plan, and for the life of me I can't come up with another one.

I'm out of budget as it is, so I can't hire someone and I can't necessarily talk about the project, so it's not like I can ask anyone for advice on a name specifically.

I'm kind of wondering if I should go into the rest of the design phase without a name and then when the site is up come up with a logo/ brand that suits it after. I'm also wondering what else I should do and how I could maybe gather together another name on my own.

Edit Just to clarify I mean UI design. Any advice?

Dba, llc? And other questions. Starting small accounting firm

    Posted: 10 Mar 2018 11:06 AM PST

My wife is an accountant, and due to changing circumstances at work shes considering, and I'm pushing her to start her own accounting business on the side of her job. They just got rid of working from home and shes stuck at home 1-2 days a week with our baby. She has another co-worker who is gettting the same shaft. They are good friends and between the both of them they do on boarding, and full accounting so it should be perfect (I'm sure it wont be lol). I'm just trying to figure out where to start. Should they start as a dba? Llc? After they start besides working what do they need for the business? Really need a beginner lesson. If anyone has done someonthing similar especially with accounting we would love the resource.
