Advice on giving equity to investors

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 05:39 PM PDT

Hey everyone, Me and two other friends have started working on a startup and we are now looking into funding and accelerators. One thing we will have to do is give away equity and being first-timers, we would like to get as much help and information as possible about how to approach this correctly.

Although new, we are not unprepared and have documented ourselves extensively via both reading up practically every famous startup book, Y Combinator posts and we attend local entrepreneurs meetups. However, we feel like we still need some more advice and other entrepreneurs' stories to weigh how to approach this.

Hence we would really like to hear your stories, opinions and advice on how fist-time entrepreneurs should approach investors and how much equity to give them. Thanks in advance.

Capital Raising Experiences and Stories for Start-ups and Investments

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 11:20 AM PDT

Im interested in hearing your experiences raising capital for startup and for investments. I want to hear the good the bad and the ugly; the easy and the difficult; the ordinary and the unusual. Please let us know how long it took? How much was raised? Who were the investors? And how did you find them? Would you accept capital from that investor again? Why or why not? What insights you've learned in the process. Are you a better capital raiser now than before? Lastly, what advice would you give other entrepreneurs who may have have little capital raising experience?

Do you think it's possible to sell this brand?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 01:57 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I started an Ecommerce business 6 months ago with 3 others and we have done fairly well in the pet space and built a strong and visually appealing brand identity.

We launched on Kickstarter, smashed our total and went viral with 15M + impressions of our video on Facebook etc. We've been in the black since day 1, too.

6 months later, 2 our of 3 founders (including myself) are leaving to focus on our other startups, which are doing well too, and more our style.

Do you know of occurrences of brands being purchased? And are there any online exchanges for this?

I say brands, because I feel like our identity and email list etc is more valuable than our business processes / supplier relationships.

    Any insight greatly appreciated!

What can motivate senior developers to go work in a startup with the low salary?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 05:41 AM PDT

Let's imagine an early-stage startup with MVP or cool product idea. The startup founders don't have "success records" of sold companies, fancy office or perks.

It's a typical bootstrap company with inspired founders team and cool idea. And what is important: this is a startup outside of SF.

So... what could motivate you as a senior developer to join such company?

    • shares?

    • challenging tasks?

    • "dream team"?

This might sound like a silly question, but getting tech people is the hardest part for every early-stage startup. So I'm curious to know your thoughts.

EDIT: I assume, that founding team can do all core development by themselves. I'm talking about hiring engineers to speed up development.

    Thank, Lisa

Payment processor that acts as a merchant of record

    Posted: 12 Mar 2018 01:08 AM PDT

    Hello,

I was looking for a good way to process payments for my startup.

Xsolla (https://xsolla.com/pricing/) has an option where they act as the merchant of record and they calculate, pay and report all taxes.

This seemed like a good option, but they only work with businesses within the video game industry.

My startup will allow users worldwide to purchase (digital services only), so handling sales taxes will be a bit tricky. I'd like to find a solution that requires little maintenance. (e.g. if VAT rates change, I'd like that to automatically be handled for me)

I see that I can use taxjar with stripe, but I'm not sure if there are better alternatives there.

Do you guys know if there is another payment processor that offers a similar solution?

    3-D Printing Prototype

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 12:05 PM PDT

Our startup is in the prototyping phase and we are looking for a 3-d printing service that is reasonably priced but still produces a good quality print. Our part is relatively small and the state-side services are asking for more than we are willing to pay. StrangeParts Youtube channel recently released a video where he toured a 3-d printing company in Shenzen, China and it seemed like a viable option most Silicon Valley startups were using. Has anyone had any success with over seas or U.S. based printing services?

If anyone has any recommendations or advice we'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

What *should* a startup entertainment studio's monthly income be during the first year?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 11:44 AM PDT

Let's say this entertainment studio releases online content which includes animations, comics, small games, art, etc. It has about 5 members all working on projects together, and the studio is extremely small with manageable expenses. All 5 members add $1000 per month to help with the studio's expenses.

What should the studio's monthly income be during the first year for all 5 members to make a decent living, as well as for the studio to grow?

(Apologies if this is a terrible question, I'm completely new to all of this, so please feel free to ask for any missing info. I'm trying to set a monthly income goal for the studio. If it matters at all, the location is in Springfield, Missouri - so cost of living is low and affordable).
