Learning how to speak in public helped me grow my business significantly. Maybe it'll help you too.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:32 PM PDT

My brother and I have been speaking in public since we were in High School, but we got significantly better at it when we started consistently volunteering to give talks at different events (Meetups, conferences, etc.) in our mid 20s.

This skill has helped us a lot in our entrepreneurial endeavors - from growing our network, to attracting customers, partners, employees, and more - so I thought I'd share what we did to improve our presentation style, how we got comfortable with the process (no more nerves!), and what we do now every time we have to speak in front of a group of people.

First let me say that when you're starting off you will be nervous, but when you get better nothing can compare to the awesome feeling of getting the attention of and captivating an audience. It's a completely unique feeling, so you should look forward to that!

I'll break things down into steps.

Step 1: Outline your talk. If you need to speak for 30-60 minutes straight (even 5 minutes) it can be overwhelming. Outline exactly what you want to cover so that it's broken down into digestible sections.

Step 2: Don't try to memorize the whole talk. Instead, leverage your outline by breaking it down into Themes. It's much easier to remember a theme than a whole paragraph/page worth of information verbatim. You can then simply speak from your mind on a particular theme, and that theme will act as a cue to help you remember what you had to say for that part. You won't have to worry about the next section because you'll remember it (your memory will be triggered) once you get to the next theme. That's how your memory works. Your brain stores infinite pockets of information and it sits hidden away until something triggers it.

Step 3: Use visuals. Make sure they don't distract from your presentation (I suggest you don't have a bunch of slides with a lot of text) but images work well, and they can also help you stay on track, trigger your memory, and keep the audience engaged.

Step 4: Use stories in your talk. People like stories, and remember them with ease. You'll also notice that people stay engaged when listening to a story, because our brains are conditioned to want to hear the buildup, climax, and conclusion. Use mini-stories within each theme, and try to have an overarching story for the whole presentation.

Step 5: Practice. Every good speaker does this. The best orators in the world will run through their talk 3, 4, 7 times before delivering it. Mark Twain once said "It usually takes me more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech." By practicing your delivery, you're naturally going to a) start remembering what you want to get across and b) sound better and more eloquent with each delivery. Most importantly, when the time comes for you to deliver your speech to an audience, you will feel different than when you're doing it in your living room. If you've practiced several times you wont have to worry about freezing up because your brain will be very familiar with the content.

I recently recorded a podcast episode about this with my brother that goes into more detail.

Feel free to ask me anything in the comments below. I love this topic, and truly believe almost anyone can become an amazing public speaker.

    Advice for monetizing a game

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:29 AM PDT

Hey so Im about to release a game that requires players to pay up after their free trail ends.

I'm thinking a one time purchase for lifetime access and a monthly subscription. Obviously my goal is to make as much money as possible. Think I have a good plan of $50 for lifetime and $5 monthly however I'm here to get advice from people with similar business setups.

I know some games only have the option of a monthly subscription. Where as for example instead of a $50 lifetime they go with a $5 monthly and $5 * 12months = $60 so I can see why they do that. However I'm not certain of the attention span of my game if players will be active for multiple months. Which is why I gave my lifetime subscription a shit ton of perks compared to the monthly so that players are more inclined to just buy lifetime once their free trial ends. Any advice would be great help thanks!

Ran into a rather nasty snag today

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:36 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I registered my single-member LLC yesterday and planned to submit licensing requirements to comply with local regulations (and obtain a local license to do business) today.

Unfortunately, I registered my LLC business address as a USPS Post Office Mailbox (for privacy/protection reasons, and also it helps save money), but therein lies the problem: I am 99% sure that won't fly once the local ordinance conducts its initial inspection. They will not approve a business that has a mailbox as its "location."

I've tried to register the "business address" as my residence address on the local forms (which defeats the purpose of using a mailbox in the first place), but my apartment won't allow it.

So now I am down to 2 options:

    1) Register a virtual office, but before I do so, make ABSOLUTE SURE the local city regulatory council will approve.

    2) Register an actual office which will 99% pass the inspection (but this really sucks because I haven't even started doing actual business yet - revenues will also take a hit)

I would like any help or alternative ideas.

If there are no alternatives to the 2 options, can ANYONE who has experience using a virtual office confirm that their local city regulators approve? I might use something like Regus.

Edit: Business is run similarly to an employment agency - hire people and connect them with interested clients.

Does independent contracting income count as small business income?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:19 PM PDT

I've started a small business this year (sole proprietorship) and have a few freelance gigs every month. I keep track of my income and business expenses for the end of the year. I don't have an EIN yet.

However, most of my income is from working as an independent contractor in a field tangentially related to my freelancing. I receive a 1099 form with my SS number on it at the end of the year.

Does both my freelance and independent contracting income count as business income? If my independent contracting income doesn't count, I'm operating at a loss because of my business expenses. This could make my business look like a hobby to the IRS.

I have a question that reads like a word problem in a middle school math text book (international shipping)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:16 PM PDT

I know this is a long shot and this may very well be the wrong sub to post in (sorry, if so)

    • I need to ship 200 books from Oregon to Canada.
    • Each book is 9 lbs, 1 oz ---> so, approx 1,812.5 lbs total
    • The books are all the same dimensions, approx. 8.5" x 5.5" x 1.25"
    • I don't care how the books are distributed across boxes (they're all going to the same place).

QUESTION: What is the most cost efficient way to get these books where they need to go?

I have not gotten a consistent answer from USPS. I don't even know where I should look/who I should talk to/what other information I would need to provide to get an answer.

Can anyone point me in a direction? I don't even care if it's the right direction. If I could drive them up there, I would, but that's not in the cards (unless I could somehow prove to my boss that paying my expenses for that would be more cost effective than shipping...)

Thanks in advance for any insight!

    Looking for website insight.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:29 AM PDT

Good afternoon all. I just wanted to gather information on what insight any of you may have towards helping me figure out what direction to go from my company's website. We're a food and beverage company who primarily does everything through our Facebook page at the moment. I would prefer the Facebook page to be a medium to bring traffic to the company's website. I've given thought towards utilizing a Web service such as Wix or Squarespace. The issue that I've had to deal with essentially is the fact that I used to design websites so it's harder for me to bring myself to use template based sites.

I've fallen and out of practice and I also do not currently have the time to build my own website so I'm looking for something that will look presentable and yet be somewhat low maintenance for the time being. Does anyone here have experience with the web-based templates? If so can you post a link to your site and may be tell me about your experience.

Also, if anyone has a different site, service, or person please feel free to refer.

    Thank you all in advance.

    Giving an Employee Sweat Equity

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:09 AM PDT

Hi All, so I own a business with a few branches in different cities. Each city requires a 'regional manager'.

I recently opened in a new market and moved an employee to this location to be the 'regional manager.' Since this person made the move half way across the country AND has been with me for years, I want to offer them a percentage of that branch (it will be set up as a separate LLC).

What would be a fair percentage for both parties? He is obviously paid a salary already, so it's not like he's working for free for a shot at a piece of the business. Im lost at where to start.

Business partner is demanding to be bought out.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 08:45 AM PDT

So, I'm a member of a 3 member LLC. We have been in operation for 2.5 years. Basically they are quitting the business, which is very successful, because we refuse to fire our best employee. No one else has had issues with said employee, except for toxic owner. TO has created problems by micro managing, no, nano managing SE. TO typically talks down to people in an aggressive way. So, it wasn't very surprising when SE snaps and talks back. SE has never threatened or personally insulted TO, they have only stood their ground when they were in the right. TO claims that in these confrontations, THEY are the victim because "how dare an employee contradict me?!?". In reality, TO was contradicting much of how SE was trained my me, in my area of expertise. TO said it's me or SE. We didn't tell TO we want them gone, but we also said we weren't going to fire our best employee. I might also add that not a single other person has had a problem with SE, he's generally pleasant and does a great job, efficiently. TO is continuing to play the victim to anyone that will be their audience. Including trying to turn our accountant against us during our meeting regarding the buyout. I really think we called TO's bluff about leaving the business, but at this point they have burned their bridge pretty sufficiently. It's pretty sad, but I can't wait until they are gone.

How to start an ethical apparel brand?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:42 PM PDT

I'm interesting in starting a t-shirt company (that would later expand to an apparel brand), and my niche would be vegans.

The problem is that I won't support sweatshop labor, so I'd need the shirts to be ethically made and most likely from the US. The problem with this is that I had planned on starting off dropshipping, but I'm pretty sure almost all dropshipping platforms buy their shirts from China/sweatshops. And I don't want to buy mass quantities of shirts that might not even sell.

Ethically made shirts are much more expensive, so I'll have to set the price high. When I did my research, they seemed unreasonably high, with the shirts, printing, shipping and everything, they come to like $25 a shirt. There's no way I could make money this way, that's how much I should be selling them. But I do see that there are ethical, vegan brands out there, so there must be a way.

I'm clearly a newbie at this, never started a business, but I'm up for the learning process and grinding to make it happen. Am I going about this wrong? Is this even possible to do? Any suggestions on how I can make this happen? Or do you think that this is just a really bad idea or a tough market to be in. Looking for honest responses.

    Thanks in advance!

The threat hacking poses to small and medium-sized businesses. (Very Short Dissertation Survey)

    Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for owners of small to medium-sized businesses or those closely involved in their management to take part in a survey regarding their experiences with hacking and cyber attacks. Even if you've never had any trouble with hacking before your input would still be greatly appreciated.

The survey is only 6 questions and should take less than a minute to complete but will be invaluable to me while completing my dissertation.

Any responses would be extremely helpful!
