    I'm an entrepreneur in aquaculture!

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 03:48 AM PDT

Hey Guys, I'm an entrepreneur in a quite unusual field - aquaculture. Aquaculture, and in this case salmon farming, is arguably a more environmentally friendly and efficient protein production than for example beef and pork. There's so much happening now on the technology side, and there is such a wave of digitalization going on that I wanted to discuss that with all of you fellow entrepreneurs.

Maybe there are other people here who are in aquaculture, or maybe agriculture which would be a little bit more probable. Anyway, I'm happy to discuss and enjoy the practical applications of new technology - how is your industry handling this?

I'm writing a couple of articles on medium about this subject, and I thought it might be interesting to read:

EDIT: Thanks for all the questions, here a couple of more resources:

EDIT 2: I'm on GMT+1, so I'll answer some more questions tomorrow!

We All Know How Important Social Skills Are In Business. This Is How Science Says You Should Overcome Social Anxiety.

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 04:42 AM PDT

Your mind races. Your palms sweat. The words don't come out of your mouth right if they come at all. We've all been there at one time or another. And some of us get it worse than others, and more frequently. Social anxiety.

Nobody wants to look stupid or be embarrassed. But since it's not like your life is on the line, why is social fear so bad? There's an answer

While it's hard to remember what a broken arm feels like, it's quite easy to remember all the times you felt mortified in public. So it's not surprising that research shows social pain is actually worse than physical pain — because you can relive it over and over again:

Individuals can relive and reexperience social pain more easily and more intensely than physical pain. Studies 1 and 2 showed that people reported higher levels of pain after reliving a past socially painful event than after reliving a past physically painful event.

And the old saying is true: often the fear itself is much worse than whatever you're afraid of. Research shows being afraid you're going to lose your job can be worse than actually losing your job:

…perceived job insecurity ranks as one of the most important factors in employees' well-being and can be even more harmful than actual job loss with subsequent unemployment.

Epictetus, the ancient Stoic philosopher said this:

Men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them.

And the advice you usually get on how to deal with fear is dead wrong. What happens when you suppress your feelings?

Your ability to experience positive feelings goes down — but not negative feelings. Stress soars. And your amygdala (a part of the brain closely associated with emotions) starts working overtime.

    From Handbook of Emotion Regulation:

experimental studies have shown that suppression leads to decreased positive but not negative emotion experience (Gross, 1998a; Gross & Levenson, 1993, 1997; Stepper & Strack, 1993; Strack, Martin, & Stepper, 1988), increased sympathetic nervous system responses (Demaree et al., 2006; Gross, 1998a; Gross & Levenson, 1993, 1997; Harris, 2001; Richards & Gross, 2000), and greater activation in emotion-generative brain regions such as the amygdala (Goldin, McRae, Ramel, & Gross, 2008).

But there's a way to deal with fear and anxiety that neuroscientists, the ancient Stoics and mindfulness experts all agree on. And it's not that hard. Let's get to it…

    TL;DR Watch Video

How To Make Fear Less Scary

There are a number of specific techniques for reducing those awful anxious emotions:

    1. Mindfulness recommends "noting" troublesome thoughts like fear. Recognize and accept them to let them go.

    2. Neuroscience advocates "labeling." (Frankly, this is a lot like noting but backed by some PhDs and an fMRI.)

    3. Stoicism has "premeditation." That's when you ask, "What's the worst that could happen?" and realize it's not that bad.

    4. Neuroscience also recommends "reappraisal." This is reinterpreting your feelings with a new story that makes them less scary.

A random bunch of tips? Nope. So what do they all have in common?

You gotta use your brain. You gotta think. Some might reply, "I am thinking, I'm thinking about all the awful stuff that could happen if I embarrass myself. In fact, I can't STOP thinking about it!"

But you're not thinking. You're reacting. Fight or flight. Like an animal would.

Look, our ancestors didn't spend millions of years climbing to the top of the food chain so we could respond the same way a lizard does. We have this shiny new prefrontal cortex and can use it to fight fear.

In fact, you already have and you probably didn't realize it…

Ever had so much going at once that something which would normally scare you just doesn't? That's not random. When your thinking brain — the prefrontal cortex — is highly engaged, it slams the brakes on feelings.

And you can use this trick deliberately. Anything that gets you thinking actively can smother anxiety:

…resources that are used to perform a cognitive task are no longer available for emotional processes. Accordingly, people can rid themselves from unwanted feelings by engaging in a cognitive activity, such as doing math equations (Van Dillen & Koole, 2007), playing a game of Tetris ( Holmes, James, Coode-Bate, & Deeprose , 2008), visualizing scenes such as sitting in a double-decker bus driving down the street (Rusting & Nolen-Hoeksema, 1998), sorting cards ( Morrow & Nolen-Hoeksema, 1990), responding to colored lights ( Christenfeld, 1997), or filling out bogus questionnaires ( Glynn et al., 2002).

Now we're talking about social anxiety, and it's not like you can start doing your taxes at a party to feel less anxious. That's okay. We can do one better. What should you think about?

Your fears. Yeah, it's a cliche, but it's true. "Face your fears." Actively. With your brain switched to "on." Neuroscience research shows when we avoid scary things we become more scared. When you face your fears they become less frightening.

Brain imaging findings suggest that extinction may involve a strengthening of the capacity of the PFC to inhibit amygdala-based fear responses (Phelps et al., 2004). Several approaches to treating anxiety disorders such as PTSD and phobias have been shown to be effective in promoting extinction. In essence, these therapies encourage the patient to confront the fear and anxiety head on.

    Stoic Premeditation

Observe your fear — and actually increase it. Imagine the worst that could happen. You are stripped naked in front of everyone and begin farting showtunes.

I know, this sounds terrifying. But imagining the worst is especially useful with social anxiety. Why?

Is someone going to stab you to death for saying something stupid? No. Do you live in a tribal society where social ostracism means you will be exiled and starve to death on the savannah? No.

So you're not really afraid of what other people will do — you're afraid of the feelings it will cause in you: embarrassment, shame, etc. News flash: you have control over the latter. They're in your head. And nowhere else.

Visualize the worst and you'll see it's really not that bad. How do I know? You laugh about some of the embarrassing things you've been through in the past, right? So I recommend you just start laughing now.

You hit yourself with the worst possible scenario and you can handle it. Awesome. But you might be anxious that you're still going to feel anxious. Fine, fine. We got another arrow left in the quiver.

And this one's powerful. This guy is the tactical nuke when it comes to dealing with fear and anxiety…

    Reappraisal

Most people think their feelings are realer than real because they're so visceral. We have a hard time denying what we feel.

Well, that's wrong. Just because you feel it doesn't make it real. Feelings aren't a satellite dish receiving signals of eternal truth. Feelings come from beliefs. Change the beliefs and the feelings change.

In one of Ochsner's reappraisal experiments, participants are shown a photo of people crying outside a church, which naturally makes participants feel sad. They are then asked to imagine the scene is a wedding, that people are crying tears of joy. At the moment that participants change their appraisal of the event, their emotional response changes, and Ochsner is there to capture what is going on in their brain using an fMRI. As Ochsner explains, "Our emotional responses ultimately flow out of our appraisals of the world, and if we can shift those appraisals, we shift our emotional responses."

You say something at a party. Everyone starts laughing. You think they're laughing at you. How do you feel?

Hold on, my bad, turns out their laughing with you. Now how do you feel?

See? Change the story and your feelings change. Harvard researcher Shawn Achor taught bankers to reappraise "stress" as a "challenge." What happened? Here's Shawn:

We watched those groups of people over the next three to six weeks, and what we found was if we could move people to view stress as enhancing, a challenge instead of as a threat, we saw a 23% drop in their stress-related symptoms. It produced a significant increase not only in levels of happiness, but a dramatic improvement in their levels of engagement at work as well.

Yay, we're done… Actually, not yet. As the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Rather that treating your fear, wouldn't it be better to not have it in the first place?

What's one of the primary sources of this anxiety? And how can we nip that in the bud?

    Don't Be An Opera Singer

hen you're feeling anxious in a social situation a lot of thoughts are going through your head: Will I bore them? What do I say? What if I embarrass myself? How do I impress them?

See a pattern here? Your brain sounds like an opera singer warming up: ME ME ME.

When I spoke to Robin Dreeke, former head of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Program, what did he say was key to connecting with people? Suspend your ego. Here's Robin:

Ego suspension is putting your own needs, wants and opinions aside.

nd Robin's right. Don't worry about impressing or not-screwing-everything-up. Research shows when people are meeting someone new they don't evaluate the interaction by what you said — they evaluate it based on how well they think they performed.

So do you see the problem here? Why so many conversations are awful? Because your brain is going ME ME ME and their brain is going ME ME ME. You need to break the cycle. So try: YOU YOU YOU.

When you're focused on yourself, you are literally being self-conscious. And that breeds the fear and anxiety. So focus on the other person. It's simple: listen to what they have to say and ask them to tell you more.

It will make the person you're talking to happier. Studies show people get more pleasure from talking about themselves than they do from food or money:

Talking about ourselves—whether in a personal conversation or through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter—triggers the same sensation of pleasure in the brain as food or money…

And it'll probably make you happier:

Researchers… found that happy people are ten times more likely to be other-oriented than self-centered. This suggests that happiness is a by-product of helping others rather than the result of its pursuit.

Buying a Vending Machine route, 140 locations. Need name suggestions and general advice.

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 11:01 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Excuse the long and possibly unorganized wall of info. I'm on my phone and just spitting out everything I can think of.

So as the title says, I am buying a vending machine route with 441 $0.25 beaver machines in 140 locations (2-6 heads per location) and the owner has agreed to seller financing with 0% down over a period of two years. (75% of profits goes towards financing, 25% stays in my pocket)

Backstory: The business owner is a mother of two who started her own vending route 13 years ago in search of an income with hours she could manage around her kids. She eventually bought out 3 other vending route in the city and expanded to chip and pop machines as well as wall vending machines in bathrooms. She wants to slow down so she is selling me all of her $0.25 beaver machines but she will keep the chip and pop machines and wall vending machines for herself.

The Financials and Labour needed: This business has an average gross income of $3,600/month with average expenses of $1,200/month leaving a net profit of $2,400/month.

The business needs an average of 60 hours/month labour which I believe I can cut down to 30-40 (she only fills machines halfway to save on money spent on candy per month. I will fill most machines all the way full)

The Agreement: Asking price was $45,100. I offered the full amount financed over 20 months at 6% APR compounded monthly (equals to 100% of profits every month paid to her as my full time job covers my living expenses and such. ) She came back with a total price of $48,000 (0% down) that must be paid over two years with a minimum monthly payment of $1,800/month (I will have to pay more some months to reach the total amount in the two years) which is great for me so that I can still keep an average of $600 in my pocket every month. I am very happy with this deal.

Other information: - For the first 4 weeks she is going around to each location with me to show me where the machines are and introducing me to the building managers/owners - She is extremely organized, very friendly and her family is very polite and well put together. - I am in charge of writing the agreement. I will have a lawyer who specializes in business contracts look it over before signing.

WHAT I NEED FROM YOU GUYS: - Business name suggestions, so far I have "Handful of Happiness" "Happiness by the Handful" "Snack Attack" "Munchie Madness" and I don't love any of them. Any suggestions would be great. - Suggestions on seller financing agreement templates I can use to help write my agreement? - Any other insights or suggestions or comments.

    Thanks!

Edit: Favourite names so far "Snack Happy" "Happy Snacker"

Got accepted into Amazon Merch program, but now I’m thinking all of designs will be too gimmicky.

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 02:04 PM PDT

I wanted to originally create merchandise related specifically to my "online personality" brand, but i figured my audience is mostly 16-24 year old males who are not likely to purchase a t-shirt with my name across the chest.

so i thought, how about creating designs that aren't exactly me-related. then i could market to my followers, but to random page visitors as well.

also i tried looking for amazon merch tips and couldn't find anything useful. so any and all comments are appreciated!

What business would you start with $30k if you had a retail space in a trendy town next to whole foods?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 01:09 PM PDT

Whole Foods recently moved in to my small town, and with it came an entire new retail plaza. Highest trafficed intersection within a 20 mile radius, and the town had an ordinance that did not allow chains until now. Average income within 1 mile radius is $125k. The new plaza has 1 space left between Chipotle, a sandwich shop, and a fruit bowl (instagram food) spot. What would you open there with a $30-50k investment?

    What's a way to start a business?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 12:45 PM PDT

It probably sounds quite vague but I've been interested in making one for a while but seem to always go over what I could do.

I understand that a lot of it is based on the hustle of the person. Would you say you could make any business work if you had enough hustle?

Cause I see a lot of businesses that are very generic but they still have a decent cash flow. Also I notice a lot of people had run into problems in their experiences and figured out a solution.

Edit: Thanks to all your responses they have been very helpful!

    Office snacks business idea

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 03:55 AM PDT

I have a new business idea: serving boxes of healthy snacks directly to offices. It would be bought by companies as free benefit for employees. I was able to find one good company that already does that: snacknation.com I would work in different area, that's why I don't consider them as direct competitor now. On the market I want to work it's hard to find good employees and companies do their best to have as good benefits for them as possible. I think there would be demand for this, even though there is no similar service running now. However, there are few things I would like to ask you at first: 1) Would you like such box to be delivered to your office once a month, once per week, or just per order? Recurring payments are great for retention, but it might be hard to stick to the same delivery schedule (orders too big or too small for demand). 2) Snacknation doesn't make these snacks on their own and still they claim to have prices around 40% lower than retail. Do you think it's possible to get similar prices for a new guy at warehouses? Or would I have to try make special deals with producers? 3) Do you see any downsides of the business that I was not able to see?

    Coding?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 12:58 AM PST

My question is about coding, i have a lot of product ideas daily, of which i filter which are viable and which are not.

A lot of my saved ideas i consider to be good/viable are apps, i see some of my app ideas as worth perusing.

However, I haven't the slightest idea on how to code, i've tried teaching myself with little success. On the flip side, apps are SO expensive to have developed, the huge learning curb i face almost seems to be worth conquering after getting some development estimates.

My question is, should i learn how to code myself, or focus more on what I know (not a huge techie guy, but I recognize the importance of this skill).

If i should decide to learn this important skill, do you have any suggestions as to how/where to learn? Part of the challenge is how crazy it is to approach, not knowing where to start.

I made a website for you to say "Hey look, I made all these products and services, and I am looking for more Adventure". And I call it Afiio.com

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 11:00 AM PDT

I am an Indie Web developer who prefer(ed) to work for himself.

There are many entrepreneurs who prefer to have multiple small profitable businesses instead of having a single profitable huge business. I belong to the first category.

And I needed a way for showcasing all of my projects in order to attract more clients, business offers, collaborations and as well as users.

Yes, users as well, because you see, I feel many people signup for your 5th project, solely for the fact that they used your prior projects and are either interested in what you do or simple because they are your admirers.

That's why I made Afiio, where I can mention & share all the projects I have worked on, so far.

This website will be a paid service in the future. But for now I need users feedback, so its free to use.

    Link: Afiio.com

    Edit 1:

    What is afiio?

Afiio is a no-nonsense portfolio website.

As an Internet Entrepreneur, I know for a fact that we do not make portfolios to showcase our portfolio design! We make a portfolio to showcase our work, and how wide our work spectrum is. Understanding that time is of an essence to an entrepreneur, Afiio provides exactly this, a no-bulls#it portfolio.

Afiio has a simple User Interface and a very flat design, to carry focus of your readers to the things exactly you want them to see.

How do you know you have the right Audience?

70 and 80 percent of people think about quitting their job to do something more fulfilling -source

of this 70%, those who do quit their jobs and start making something are for sure, very serious about it.

Knowing how important it is to be focused, no one should waste time beautifying and customizing their portfolio, while their actual product/service is in need of serious work!.

    Why Afiio is different?

Afiio is the most basic, clean and minimal portfolio you can find. And I intend to keep it this way.

Sure you can use other websites to make your portfolio, and they might even claim it will take "less than 5 minutes to set it up", but down the road, because you have tons of options, you will end up spending more and more time tweaking and changing how it looks!

You will spend more time on their free service styling your portfolio, your precious time you could be spending on actually working on your work!

Launching my first physical product next week. Wish me luck!

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 09:34 AM PDT

I've been building software for almost 10 years, but next week I will be launching my first physical product: A laptop stand called Posture.

    It's a bit of a story, but...

Late last year I was having chest pains. After many tests and doctors visits, I discovered it was actually a muscular problem caused by hunching over my laptop all day.

The solution is simple, lift the laptop up a bit, but when you work from a hotdesk at a workspace, you can't just bring a stack of books with you! I looked online for good looking, quality laptop stands that lifted it up high enough, but I couldn't find anything I liked. So I designed my own!

After many iterations, prototypes and research, I am finally settling on a materials and manufacturer. I'm going to start taking preorders next week, and will be able to fulfil orders this Summer.

I would really appreciate any feedback you guys might have on the website: Here.

    Cheers!

European Data Protection Act (GDPR) - What is at stake for website owners?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 12:52 PM PDT

This regulation made one of the strongest and boldest statements for quite some time: global applicability. The regulation was heading on towards one of the most contested terrain, with relevant interests spanning across individuals, companies and authorities alike. And when it comes to European regulation, interests of various member states and the Union, whether in conflict or not, can easily become to be a challenge if not just an obstacle to overcome.

In the process of understanding GDPR the most important this is to read, learn and also communicate it to your employees so that everyone understands the severity of this regulation. To understand if you need any saftety protocols in place you should rewiev the data you collect and understand if it is in order with the requirements that GDPR will lay down.

GDPR requires a lot of changes in your website also starting from registration forms and going all the way to marketing solutions. Some changes are needed for different designs and information gathering activities on your site.

the website doesnt seem very big and doesnt have a great reach - but i am almost sure their product would sell great with a special audience in my country.

so i would like to test this and set up a website by myself and just buying the service from them and resell it.

do you think this is unethical? should i contact them before hand? i sure would contact them if my site is going well to negotiate some discounts etc - but if i contact them beforehand maybe they just do my idea on their own.

    Financing To Do Large Deals

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 12:19 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to share some tips on how to get some financing on buying large apartment deals. When I started my journey as an entrepreneur, I was looking at businesses to buy. The problem with conventional businesses is that you have to have significant collateral, the amount that the bank will let you borrow is not that great, and you have to sign a personal guarantee. That's what made me ultimate choose to buy apartment buildings. The apartment is the collateral, the bank will let you borrow 80%, and the loans are totally non-recourse. I am now a real estate entrepreneur.

I made this video to demonstrate how to get the loan for apartments. Share it with others who are looking to start the world of entrepreneurship or looking to diversify their holdings. Not a lot of people know about this type of financing so I hope you enjoy. Happy to answer any questions.

Handling liability when client goes against your advice.

    Posted: 11 Mar 2018 08:57 AM PDT

    (X-posted)

Just by way of introduction, I am an IT consultant.

I'm starting to get into corp-to-corp arrangements, and I have an attorney looking over the Master Services Agreement and Purchase order for my services. That said, I still want to reach out to other IT consultants and ask, how do you handle Errors and Omissions liability in just one area: When the customer wants you to--against your recommendations--implement some solution or design directly into Production environment without first building in a Dev/Test environment first?

Or say they want you to skip Discovery and Analysis phase, and go right to planning and execution phase?

I've had one client recently want to cut costs and do precisely that, and should something go wrong and cause business disruptions, how do you as a consultant protect yourself from any legal claims or complaints when they choose not to follow your advice? I get that I will want those decisions documented in meeting minutes and email... but what language is common in contracts to protect you in those scenarios?

    Own store, etsy/ebay/amazon or both?

I have my own store and I sell on Etsy and eBay too. I have many orders on Etsy...so this is my question.

    What is the best option?

I have a list of hundreds of thousands of people in my target market that includes names, phone numbers, and emails. What's the best way to leverage this thing?

So, let me start off by saying that I've been in marketing for years, but I've pretty much always done small scale things. I branched out on my own recently, and acquired this list via one of my clients.

Now, I'm not sure how to best leverage this much information (500k+ people who can benefit from advertising). Whether it's a cold email campaign, hiring cold callers, etc.

I could use some advice - I think there's a ton of potential for profit here and I'm not sure of the best way to go about getting it.
