Any suggestions for deciphering if my business isn’t taking off due to an over saturated market OR something I’m missing on my end?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 03:28 PM PDT

I worked as a personal shopper for two national gig companies for a year. Working for gigs sucks for both the shopper & customer. I decided to try to launch my own personal shopping company back in October. I've had so many people say they'll use me, but still haven't.

I've done my research & believe my pricing is fair. I have a sharp website, market my services & utilize social media. My main customers with the national companies were busy professionals, college students, families with young kids, disabled persons, & the elderly. There is potential... But, most stores here are offering grocery curbside pick up now, & there are two national companies.

I can offer things that these national companies cannot, such as going to more than one store, forming a bond, no hidden fees or memberships, etc.

My last business grew so fast I couldn't keep up. This is foreign to me. I can't decide if it's time to take this idea out back & shoot it rather than sinking more time & money into it.

    Looking forward to constructive feedback!

    Rebranding

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:06 AM PDT

What are your opinions on rebranding? I'm thinking of rebranding a small business I created but I have already done it twice.

The first name was a mix of a Portuguese and an English word (I work in Portugal) and I decided to change it to a Portuguese word. Actually, 2 words.

And now it just looks too long and unprofessional.

Thinking of changing it again to a smaller, one word name and want to hear opinions on the subject.

Going from Sole Proprietorship to an LLC in NY - What's the expenses overall and is it worth it? (Personal Training)

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 09:15 AM PDT

I run a side business for personal training out of my home gym (well, my parents). I have my business registered in my county and I have insurance.

A buddy came to me and suggested I go into an LLC (no employees, just me for now). When I talked to my CPA he made it seem a bit convoluted and expensive. My buddy said that it offers more protection (which I knew) and I could get a lot of deductions for whatever I spend, from equipment to advertising and such.

My issue is that this is a side business, so it doesn't make me a ton of money. I have, at the moment, 5 clients, one of which is starting tomorrow. In a perfect week I would make $205/week (if everyone showed up for all sessions), so it isn't sustainable for a full time job by any means.

Would it be worth it? And are taxes then done quarterly? I'm confused.

About to move my 12 yo retail store into new location that includes separate shop space for our small manufacturing plan. Any tips on raising a small amount of capital quickly to get the ball rolling without going into debt?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 09:05 PM PDT

I am within 6 months of being out from under all debt associated with starting my store. The manufacturing plan has been on the back burner for a handful of years due to many extraneous circumstances(health scare, secondary business issue, current location, etc). I have finally secured the right location for this next phase of business, but have no interest in going back in debt. Any ideas, input, or direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Buying out a restaurant

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 04:52 PM PDT

Long story short I helped open up a restaurant. The original owner came up with the concept to put it in the shopping center he owned. It wasn't making him money or paying rent so he decided he was either going to close or sell it off. Since I helped start the business with him and refine everything I convinced him to let me have a crack at ownership on the condition I pay a miniscule franchising free and would immediately start paying market rate rent. I've done well enough to buy a food truck to expand my operations, which has been doing great on it's own, though is lots of work between the two for me. Well now the owner of the brand/property is looking to sell the property and wants to either agree upon an actual franchise agreement with meaningful payments, or sell the brand to me completely. Now that it's time to put up or shut up, I want to make sure I am doing this right and not just buying myself a job that I can't pay off.

    2015 Net Income: 40K

    2016 Net Income: 60K

2017 Net Income: 43K (launch of food truck in Q4)

    He wants 130K for everything

75K paid to him for the brand

35K paid to the center and his partners for the FF&E, though it is all 5 years old and breaking down.

Initial purchase price of all equipment was around 25K, but he's trying to amortize the 35K w/ 25% annual offset over a 5 year lease, which would be used as a buyout clause for the lease if I wanted to terminate early. He doesn't want me stuck in a bad situation if I decide I want to move locations, and he is no longer the properly owner. Eg If I wanted to leave in 2 years I would pay the remainder of the equipment payments instead of the remainder of the 5 year lease. Does this make sense?

He is my mentor, but he is having to do everything at arms length because of his other partners. He wants me to negotiate with him. Cant really evaluate things as a normal business because of the amount of work I've already put into get things where they are. I was thinking a 65K for the brand with a higher amount as a down payment and 25-30K for the FF&E which is 5 years old and in need of some upkeep and replacement. How should I approach this?

What was your experience using Fiverr to create a video for your business?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 11:25 AM PDT

Duration, quality, timeline, costs, etc. I have a client that recently scrapped the video for their marketing website. I might nudge them toward Fiverr but I have never used the service to create a video before. I am curious what your experience was. Thank you in advance.

    How important is Amazon exclusivity?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:31 PM PDT

My business is small but steadily growing, 6K revenue the first year then 14K, and now I'm at 6K the first 3 months

One of my best sellers is a product that I'm an official dealer for in Canada, which has given me some good cred in the community.

Ive started small and going to start putting this product up on Amazon.ca for even more exposure.. The manufacturer said for me to get exclusivity I should have stock on their entire line and quoted me a price list of around 6K

I've never taking out a loan and only used profits to build slowly.. I have about 4K.. Should I go all in on this product and secure exclusive Amazon Canada dealer status?

I guess in the grand scheme of things its a small gamble but it's taken me a couple years to actually purchase 6K USD worth of inventory

Thinking about creating a tool for networking with entrepreneurs in your area

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:21 PM PDT

There are many matching apps for entrepreneurs available, but most of them require you to spend a lot of time swiping before actually talking with someone. Most of the times, i've found myself wasting more time swiping than actually talking to others.

Another problem I've found is that most of the conversations with other entrepreneurs online seem a bit inactive or asynchronous.

I'm thinking about launching an app where you don't have to swipe in order to get matches, and where you're only getting matched with your partner if both of you are online.

What do you think of this idea, would you use it? I've come across a potential competitor with this twist, but they seem to not have released yet so i wouldn't worry.

Thinking of opening a small coffee shop

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 05:55 PM PDT

Context: I live in a pretty large city in Ontario, Canada, there are very few, good, authentic coffee shops where you can get a nice, Italian espresso coffee, the city is dominated by Tim Hortons on almost every street corner, and quite a few Starbucks aswell.

I would like to have it be like a caffe you would find in Italy, with good coffee, maybe strike a deal with a local italian bakery to serve their pastries, I'd like to serve Italian-style soups and sandwiches, things like that.

I have no relevent experience in this field, apart from my own personal interest in coffee culture, particularly Italian, and it is one of a few passions of mine. I've always wanted a place like this to be able to go, but there really isn't a place like this and so I feel like it could be a hit if placed in the right area (which I have an idea of where I'd like to put it). I'd primarily be the owner-operator, with maybe 1 or 2 employees if the business does pretty well.

Anyways, so after that wall of text, I'd like some advice on how to start this up, maybe some insight from people who have made a similar business venture?

Question for Merchants - payment processors

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 05:04 PM PDT

Hi all, feel free to chime in. Maybe this would be better suited as a poll, but my question is for the merchants out there..

What payment processor do you use and are you happy with it? Are most of your payments swiped or entered manually? What would you like to see in a payment processor that would convince you to switch?

I am considering running a marketing campaign for a referral partner, so I was curious to get a feel for what you all think. Thank you for your answer and best to your business.

Title says it all. We run a water well drilling company and finding trained talent is nearly imposisble which leads to on the job training which leads to mistakes.

Has anyone successfully partnered with a local community college to develop an apprenticeship program?

Need advice on starting a recycling business.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 02:48 PM PDT

I wanted to setup a franchise of recycling centers that resembles a retail store, rather than the site of seeing dirt & mud. The objective is to be able to recycle every possible item, so we need to know what machinery we'll need to process plastic, metal, tires, paper, cooking oil, motor oil, computers, and more.

Any advice about a restaurant bid would be great.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 01:51 PM PDT

I'm considering the purchase of a restaurant I used to cook at and manage. Since then, I've got my graduate degree and have added some further managerial experience to my resume.

The restaurant has closed down due to the drug, personality, and mental issues of the manager (my co-manager when I worked there, as well as the son of the owners). I know the restaurant is viable with dedication and it has a great location on the center block of the town it's in.

My question is if I should only offer a price that reflects the value of the building and the used equipment in it? It's all well used but has some life left in it. Though the people who took over after the son's breakdown were quite brutal to everything and I foresee some hefty expenditures to get the place to top-notch.

Or do I need to offer more money because it's a business (though it has now been closed for several weeks and went through a terrible last two years after I left and the manager had his break down).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Good Timeclock for our store

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 11:50 AM PDT

Hey guys, recently my wife and I had an issue with one of the employees at our gamestore saying he was working when he wasnt.

We can not quite afford a camera system, so we decided to go with a classic punch in punch out method for when our employees work. We are frequently busy and not always there, so it is a good way to track proper hours as times are a bit tight.

We are thinking of ordering this timeclock, was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good affordable options or if they have personally tried the timeclock linked below. There are good reviews and we use amazon to purchase most of the stuff for our store, so I was just wanting feedback. Thanks in advance

Growing business, how do we expand?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:49 AM PDT

We're primarily a western pa based service company. We're to the point now where we're wanting to start heading into Ohio, how do we proceed with this transition?

The problem we're running into is.. how the hell would any company do this, do you just HOPE that the employee you hire is able to handle the work without supervision?

Are our hands tied here? Are we practically forced to open a new branch & hire a manager that will oversee all employees, we don't want to just jump in, possibly inch our way over..

i'm just trying to pick your brains here and see what options i'm possible overlooking.

Edit: was asked for more info

The field manager is definitely an option we're going to have to explore.

Pest control company, technicians are given company vehicles, phones, tablets, etc. and are basically expected to operate without someone breathing down their necks every minute.. the problem we're running into is how do we make sure he's stocked on a day to day basis without needing to open another branch for a single employee.

If you'd need any other information please ask away.

    Mixing Products

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:50 AM PDT

Hello. I am a hobbyist woodworker, have been building things for myself and friends for years, and I also like boating. Recently, I registered a business and am working on the website and plan to make custom boat parts (CNC cut, mostly) out of HDPE plastic. While woodworking and plastic fabrication are very similar, they are also different.

My question here: Would I have any problem selling wood products as well, under the same LLC? I don't see why I would, but I just want to be sure I am not overlooking something... OR am I better off keeping the wood stuff fully seperate?

Please let me know if you need more info to better answer the question.

    Internet and phone, cell phone?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:40 AM PDT

I'm starting my first small business in a commercial space soon, and I need to start researching internet and phone service. I'd like to have a separate phone number for the business to provide a better experience for my customers rather than using my personal cell phone. It seems obvious, but before this big step into a commercial space my small business was a hobby, and I just use my cell phone. That said I also need internet for using Square as my point of sale, and for my laptop in my office for sending emails. I may also do some music streaming through a small Google home Mini. I understand I live in a different area than all of you and the isps will obviously be different, but has anybody experimenting with using a service on your personal cell phone such as a VoIP for a business line? I contacted Comcast internet in my hometown and they said they can do this through an app, but the internet was surprisingly expensive and they also want to sell me TV service for my small business LOL thanks in advance for any help!

Which name + domain name is better for a local web development business?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:26 AM PDT

    Poll: https://www.strawpoll.me/15379891

We are going to be targeting primarily small-business owners in the southeast US (we are based in NC).

We want a name that conveys technical expertise delivered to non-technical customers. Our main concerns are perceived professionalism and ease of word-of-mouth advertising (pronunciation, proneness to misspelling, etc).

We have a few domains that we already own that could be used for this, but if none of them are any good be sure to leave a comment (here or the poll) explaining that to us.

    Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

How do you fund a new café?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 11:06 AM PDT

I'm interested in starting a new Vegan Café in my city. I work a part time job and my husband has a full time job, but we certainly don't have money put away fro such a venture. I'm not afraid of working my current job and beginning this new adventure, I'm just not sure how to go about getting the funding I would need. I've scouted out locations and everything I've found would need renovations (a kitchen most specifically). Can anyone give me some good down to earth advice? Thanks in advance :)
