My business is over before it even started Posted: 27 Feb 2018 05:28 PM PST Well my small business is pretty much over and I was never even able to get it off the ground. Its a print advertising business. Its a paper that I would distribute to doctors offices, restaurants, coffee shops, pretty much everywhere people sit about. Filled with fun stuff to read and puzzles and stuff. I am thinking now that nobody wants to do a print ad. I was able to get 150 businesses to agree to have it in their place of business but I only was able to get one advertiser in the last couple months. I have sent a million emails and made tons of phone calls and gone to tons of businesses and the answer I get is, it's not in the budget or they are only doing digital advertising. I live in a place with over a hundred thousand people and tons of businesses but I am out of money to support my family and I think I just have to pack it in and get a regular job. I am so discouraged. I failed myself and my family. I am not trained in sales and sometimes my anxiety gets the best of me when I am doing sales calls. I guess I shouldn't have gotten into this. Now I have a big loan to pay back and months of work with nothing to show. Don't know why I am writing this. Just need to get out of my head I suppose. Blehhhhhhh [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:36 AM PST Hey girls/guys! I found that whenever I needed a bit of marketing inspiration and searched, I had to really dig through generic, click-bait articles and advice that ended up just demotivating me. I found:
So I started to collect ideas and am at about 70 right now. I'm looking for feedback if anyone is willing. Is it something you'd use? How would you do things differently? Thanks everyone, hope you find it useful: https://getmarketingideas.com [link] [comments] |
Would you pay $300 per month to own a website & have it managed for you? Posted: 28 Feb 2018 01:23 AM PST Just wondering, Is $300 per month too much to pay to have a website hosted and managed along with minor changes/updates every month? If not, what would be an acceptable rate? Edit: Many comments ask for more context. It's for a small business website basically just online for advertisement and so new customers can find the business [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Feb 2018 02:25 AM PST I started a company with a couple of coworkers and things were going great.. until they weren't. We lost the clients we gained and they bottled it, we ended up exactly where we started except they had lost all motivation to continue & resigned. I'm now left as the sole director and I'm worried that I may be prosecuted for not filing things correctly etc. I don't want to run this business anymore. I just want it to end, but Companies House aren't making it very easy. I feel like they've just left me in the shit. [link] [comments] |
Going into discussion with a freelance graphic designer--what are some things I should flesh out? Posted: 28 Feb 2018 04:19 AM PST If I'm hiring the services of a freelance designer, what are some essential things I need to flesh out? Moreover, how do I estimate pay? I plan on paying based on completion of the assignment. The assignment itself would be submitting to me the .ai, .psd, and image files of a logo branding. More specifically, the logo is simply 6 letters making up a word, with style up to her. I'm curious how to handle things as they relate to rights and ownership. Like, how do I make sure I can do with the final product as I please? It'll be used for my business, I may end up changing it, etc. Feedback much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
1yr Online Business & NO SALES! :( Posted: 28 Feb 2018 04:11 AM PST My name is Branden, I have just turned 20 and for a WHOLE YEAR now I have been trying and putting my savings into getting a business off the ground: ballerthreadz.com Based around basketball themed t-shirts. Basketball is something I am very passionate about but so far I have NOT made ONE SALE (besides family and friends). I keep testing Facebook ads but still nothing. It feels like I'm just burning money! I would love to get some feedback on the website and what I can do to attract customers and get some interest. Every time I get a glimpse of interest or hope it just gets squashed. We are also on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter so please follow! THANK YOU! [link] [comments] |

How does anyone afford health insurance? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:51 AM PST Reddit... I could use some help. I've been building my small business since 2014, it's going reasonably well. Me and 1 other person, partnership llc. I think I can grow it substantially more if I can devote more time to it, but I'm saddled with needing a day job to have health insurance for myself, wife and 2 kids. We are in NY state, fwiw. I keep looking into it and keep coming up short. Lousy plans, tons of costs, completely unworkable. Add to this the fact that we want good insurance, not pretend bs coverage as well. I can only assume that if you get a decent plan and then manage to cost them more than you put in, they'll just jack your rates or drop you the next year... Then you're stuck. Not to mention that we have no idea what is coming up for health insurance politically in the next few years. Forget the idea that we'd love to hire someone to expand the business and our throughput and capabilities, but providing insurance for an additional person would be obscene. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do in my situation? Any avenues to explore to make it work? I'm open to doing it personally, direct, or thru the business if that makes it work one way over another. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Geico liability insurance vs. going through an insurance broker? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:06 PM PST Currently mulling the options of ditching our insurance broker, and current carrier and switching to Geico after finding out they offer business liability insurance. What pro's and con's should I consider aside from the price difference? Geico being much cheaper, also I know Geico doesn't have any physical address... so other than those things. thx in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2018 10:28 PM PST So I have owned a media/news publishing website where I cover animation in television and film for almost three years now. My revenue is based off of how many impressions my ads get, which seems to grow when I get a ton of traffic. Right now, I can't say that I'm happy with my monthly revenue. However, I am earning more and more visitors each day because I work on my website for more than 40 hours a week, and I like where it is going. Though some days I just get lucky with traffic. I want to apply for a small business loan or line of credit, but there are some issues that come along with it. Let me tell you guys about my background: I suffer from anxiety & panic disorder and depression. I come from a traumatizing childhood and I definitely don't have the best family. My parents put a credit card in my name and messed up my credit as soon as I turned 18 and had an income. My dad sold my car and left to another state. Being self-employed and working from home has helped me tremendously. My website is like my child and I am looking to grow it larger. What I wanted to do with the loan was buy ad space on Google & Facebook. Do you guys think that's a good plan? What advice would you have for me? Thank you so much in advance. [link] [comments] |
Trying to start a new summer computer building business. Posted: 27 Feb 2018 10:07 PM PST I am a 14-year-old boy living currently out of the country in Kuwait, and I am trying to start a business when I go back to the US over the summer. I was thinking about doing something about building computers for others. What could I do to start out? Is custom computer building semi-popular? Note: I have built my own desktop 3 months ago, so yes, I know the components, and how to make sure parts are supported or not. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:11 PM PST I'm trying to start a small virtual business, and was hoping to have someone with a bit more experience to talk to and bounce ideas off of. If this is not the place to place this, please advise where this post may be appropriate [link] [comments] |

Looking for a mobile workforce software with on the go timesheets and GPS tracking. Posted: 27 Feb 2018 04:16 PM PST I've been roaming around the net looking for the right solution to my problem here. Currently the company uses Xora Software for Job tracking/dispatch/gps tracking/Timesheets. The problem is, it seems like the company rebranded into StreetSmartMobile and dropped support for Xora, causing problems to arise frequently with the old system and no support. Currently the workforce is using Semi-smart phones(rugged flip phones with app functionality). With a strong push to go to android devices. The functionality we need is to be able to pull data off the software at anytime and have it used in our custom Accounting software, this was the benefit of Xora as it allowed it. I have looked into T-sheets, but it seems like they really want you to use Quickbooks which is not an option here, but they do provide an API for Integrating into our software. Looking for any solutions here, will probably look further into StreetSmartMobile, but the abandonment of previous software seems like a bad sign. Anyone have any experience here? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2018 04:07 PM PST Hello guys, I am planning on selling a product on my website. At the moment, I am trying to define the best way to process payments. And I need to have the option of receiving a URL from them. Is it possible to set up a system where once the transaction have been processed, they receive an automatic email from me as a receipt? Then they can reply to the email so I can get the URL? [link] [comments] |
Do you give yourself breaks when starting a business? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 07:58 AM PST I currently finished my job (it was temporary) and I was working on my business planning and research before work, on weekends and evenings. Since I have finished, I have actually been implementing my plans (creating the site, sourcing products etc.) and should be launched in the next few weeks. But my question is about breaks as I feel I am breaking the rules of "hard work" which entrepreneurs always emphasise, when I allow myself breaks. This is what I do (work on business all morning, play video game for 3-4 hours of the afternoon and then work on business up until around 9pm). I do this because I can get demotivated and burned out. How many breaks did you give yourself during the time you were starting your business? [link] [comments] |
Form Company or Keep it Individual Posted: 27 Feb 2018 01:53 PM PST Recently came upon a side income. First time around I made about $1500. Not sure if there will be another opportunity this year to make a significant amount like this. What would your threshold be to spend the $200ish to start a company to make it worthwhile? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2018 01:45 PM PST Alright, ranting honestly. I believe my anger to have some grounds though. Here is the situation: I am vendor A and my complaints are focused at vendor B. Vendor B and I offer video services to sports tournaments. Vendor B is already servicing a prospective sports tournament that I will have an individual client at. Alright, fine. I'll be there as well. I then contact the tournament and am completely shut down. Vendor B has it to where the only filming equipment allowed on the premises at all is through them. These tournaments take place on public property, can they really deny me from operating on the grounds of their contract between vendor B and the tournament? It just seems there are legal issues. But I'm no lawyer and I'm biased to hope the law is in my favor. The rant part is, completely banning filming equipment except your own?! That is ridiculous, "oh sorry family of 4 who spent $100 on a decent little handheld to film the tournament, you actually can't have that here. You have to spend $350 just to get even one game filmed" Kudos to them for having competition barred off from a business standpoint. But ethically and personally I'm rubbed the wrong way and want to find a way around this. Thanks for reading, please share your opinions blasting me or vendor B. [link] [comments] |
Small Business Diversity Certification Posted: 27 Feb 2018 12:51 PM PST My company works in a very nice market providing professional consulting services to large corporations (insurance companies mostly). We are wanting to obtain a diversity certification (veteran-owned business in this case) in order to help us compete with our much larger competitors. My question is: Has anyone gone through a similar certification process? Do you feel that it provided a tangible benefit to your business? [link] [comments] |

Do you know any great resources for Market Awareness/Analysis Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:19 AM PST Just posted on r/Entrepreneur, but this question might be better suited for this community. Any local business owners have any resources or any tips on finding out how your local market is doing? Friend owns an HVAC Business and during his quarterly catch-up with the employees it hards to know how our local market for other HVAC companies are doing so they can develop their strategies such as lowering COGs, find opportunities. Make friends with the other business owners? [link] [comments] |
What kind of tasks do you have your administrative assistant do? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 10:29 AM PST I just hired an administrative assistant at ~20 hours per week. I am realizing I don't quite have enough for her to do to fill that time, so she is sometimes sitting idle. Things I have her do: Filing Leading a mailchimp campaign to get new clients Scheduling Helping other workers as needed Answering emails Managing my calendar What other things do you have your admin assistant do? My first time using a stock photo for a local magazine ad. Anything I should know? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 08:51 AM PST I've been looking for a specific photo to use for an ad I'd like to place with a local magazine. I haven't had any luck with free stock photos, but I've found one or two from a paid stock photo site. The basic license is about $30 for the photo, and it allows 500,000 physical reproductions (the magazine prints 15,000 copies per issue). The enhanced license is about $200 for the photo, and it allows unlimited reproductions. I will most likely go with the basic license. Do I receive some kind of paper for proof that I do have a license to use this photo for advertising my business? Should I look into anything else in terms of licensing and legal issues? What is your experience with this? Edit: Formatting. [link] [comments] |
