(NJ) If I test positive for weed at the emergency room, will CPS be called just because of it?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 01:10 AM PST

Background: I am an occasional weed smoker who also happens to have an infant daughter. I never smoke while caring for my child, nor am I ever under the influence while caring for her. I only smoke when I have a babysitter and am not home.

Recently I have been dealing with severe gastrointestinal distress. An endoscopy has shown nothing, I can't get a follow up with my GI doc without a new referral. But my pain has now gotten so bad it is radiating into my lower back and I am thinking of going to the emergency room.

However, I am concerned that if I am drug tested (which I believe is just standard ER procedure) and test positive for marijuana, CPS will be called for the simple fact that I am both a parent and an occasional pot user. This is the only thing stopping me from seeking medical attention. Am I just being paranoid?

[DE] Ex gf stopped making payments on car I have been letting her drive. Car is titled to me.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 04:12 AM PST

Thanks in advance for the advice!

When my then gf's car broke more than a year ago, I agreed to buy a car that she could use for whatever she wanted as long as she made weekly payments to me to repay what I had spent, and monthly payments to cover insurance. I paid cash for the car. There is no loan. The title of the car is in my name only. She is listed as an authorized driver on the insurance.

The agreement was that when she had made payments totaling the amount I had spent for the car, I would sign the car over to her. She has now stopped making payments to me, and didn't send a check for the insurance this month either. She is also not communicating about this problem.

So, do I just show up and drive off in the car? Do I then have to sell it and give her what's left after the $1200 she still owes me? What about her possessions that are in the car? Do I need to go to court first? Thanks for any insight.

Is my new job even legal?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 04:39 AM PST

    Hello legal advice,

So i'm a recent university graduate and I work in the information technology field, so I have very low legal knowledge about this and was wondering if I can get some feedback. I was posting on job boards and my resume was everywhere for IT. About a month ago I checked me email and this company was very serious about hiring me. I will not mention any names, unless someone wants to help me out more privately, and I can discuss it one on one with an expert. So they offered me a job, it is online technically and I was currently out of work so I took the job because it was part time 6-10 hours a week and I can do it after work. I will go into further detail about what I have to do and my reasons for asking if it is even legal. So the company is in Europe specifically located in Germany. They look pretty legit, they say they are a travel agency and setup up events for large companies around the world. In my case they said they want to expand to the United States and hire agents in America. Technically, I am their agent in America. So the tasks they offer me are very weird. They send me checks upwards of $2000 from companies located in the United States for now I've only been dealing with the "loner state". So they send a check and it arrives, I deposit it into my account which takes around a week because it has to be reviewed. After the funds are available I have to send them over a money-gram location to somewhere in Europe that is very low tax. The country is Moldova. I am given a list of names to send the funds too. How do I make money? I take a 5% cut and i get a 5% bonus if I do it on time. I successfully did only one transaction at around 2k so I only made $100 which isn't much but for something that only took me 1-2 hours to do it's pretty decent I assume for part time and out of college. I don't mind doing the work, but someone help me is this legal? I know I have to pay tax on the 5% or 10% that I make I can do that, but how would I go about doing that and making it all legal. I don't want the IRS to come knocking so far I'm keeping all the emails and all transaction receipts and everything backed up just in case. The few things i'm wondering is if this is some kind of money laundering they are doing to avoid taxes and I'm the middle man. Why can't the company that's sending me these funds do it themselves? My next assignment is around 5k$ worth and ill be making $300. Idk if on my taxes I have to report that I made 5k$ when i'm only making $300. I have to pay much higher taxes on 5k then $300 so in the end I don't want to be losing money or going to jail. Any help would be much appreciated, because I find this job pretty interesting and I make some funds to support my family which is nice only doing a few hours work.

Child Support caseworker in Vermont made an error which caused my child support case that I've been pursuing for a year to be thrown out. I want to know if there is a board, bureau, etc where I can report how poorly my case was handled.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 10:13 AM PST

This situation is a little messy to explain so I will do my best to keep everything as clear as possible.

My son's father and I separated at the beginning of 2014 while we were both living in Kentucky with our son who was about 5 months old. Our ending was punctuated by me bringing him to court for a domestic violence charge. The judge found him guilty and he moved to Vermont (with his family) five days after the hearing. Since then he has not supported his son financially whatsoever and we have had zero contact.

For a long while I was just relieved to have washed my hands of him, and due to the tumultuous nature of our relationship did not want to deal with pursuing child support. Particularly because he could be volatile and would, in the past, go through bouts of sending me many angry and vicious texts and voicemails (usually when he was fucked up, most of them telling me how I should kill myself). With us living in different states it was difficult to obtain any kind of no-contact order (as the laws vary state to state) and I didn't consider the verbal harassment worth dealing with.

However, that all changed a year ago when I lost my job and began pursuing opening my own business. Not only did no longer having an income make me realize how valuable a few extra hundred dollars each month would be, but, with all the time that had passed felt far less scared of my ex-boyfriend.

I began my petition for child support in February of 2017. It has been a long back and forth process due to the differences in the laws between Kentucky and Vermont, and also due to the sheer amount of time it took mailing forms and letters back and forth between the two states.

Finally in December of 2017 I received a letter from the caseworker from the Office of Child Support in Vermont. It invited me to phone in for a meeting between my ex and I that, for all intents and purposes, would work as a legal mediation between the two of us. If we could reach an agreement about child support at this meeting we could cut out going to the court altogether and simply submit our agreement to the courts for approval.

I phoned into the meeting and everything went well. The caseworker ran our incomes through the typical equation and my ex and I both agreed that the monthly payment they came up with was a reasonable amount for each of us. We also both agreed that January of 2018 seemed like a good time to start the payments. The caseworker informed me that after we got off the phone that my ex would sign all of the necessary forms. Once they were signed they would be mailed to me, I would sign the appropriate pages, mail it back, and then it would be submitted to the court and finalized.

Come the first week of January the packet of forms that I needed to have signed and notarized came in the mail with an attached letter from the caseworker explaining that I had until March 10, 2018 to return the forms to their offices.

With the deadline being a couple months away I decided to take my time and read through each of the papers (about 20 pages total) before I signed anything. I came across one page stating that my ex did not owe arrears, which, I thought was strange considering I know that the state of Kentucky does make people pay arrears for child support. However, I have no idea what the specifics are in Vermont and at the time I was also unclear on whether or not my son's father needed to adhere to Vermont's child support laws or Kentucky's child support laws. So, I called the Child Support Offices in Vermont and asked for my caseworker. The man that answered the phone asked me what my call was regarding, and when I asked my question informed me that I needed to go through my caseworker in Kentucky.

I phoned her next and she told me that my son's father was going to be held by Vermont's child support laws and that she was unsure if they charged people for arrears, but, that she had the direct line for our Vermont caseworker and would call her personally and find out. The she said that while she had me there on the phone she wanted to let me know that the Vermont caseworker had called her recently and said that she hadn't received my paperwork back in the mail and that if she didn't get it soon she was going to assume it wasn't coming and that we'd need to start our petition for child support all over again. I told my caseworker that while it had been a few weeks since I'd gotten my paperwork in the mail, so I could understand why she might assume it wasn't coming back, I technically had until March 10th to send everything back so still had plenty of time to figure out where everything stood before I signed anything and mailed it back. We ended the call so my caseworker could touch base with the offices in Vermont and promised to call me back as soon as she had some answers.

20 minutes later she returned my call and tells me that she has bad news. She explained to me that the Vermont caseworker had pulled up a copy of the letter she had sent with my paperwork and told her that she sees where she had written down the return deadline as March 10th, but, that was actually just a typo. Apparently I had already missed the deadline and despite it being her own personal error said that since my forms are late the case has been dropped and we'll need to file a new one all over again.

I can't explain how livid I am. Here I am, one full year later from when I first started my petition for child support, and I have to start the entire thing over again. All due to an error that could have very, very easily been avoided if she had bothered to proofread the information she'd sent me.

What I want to know is if there is any sort of recourse I can take. I would like to, if possible, report this to some sort of board, bureau, superior, or anyone else who could actually hold her accountable for the error that she's made. It just seems wrong that she can ruin a full years worth of work from my caseworker and I and not even have the slightest repercussion. Is there anything at all I can do?

(IN) I decided to pick up a shift under a different job title. The shift i picked up makes less hourly than i normally make. My employer is going to total my hours for the oay period, and average the pay between the two shifts. Is this legal for them to do?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 08:00 AM PST

I work for a factory in indiana as an EMT, and I make $13 hourly. I decided to help out and i picked up a security guard shift, which pays $10 hourly.

Guard shifts are 8 hours long, and EMT shifts are 12 hours long. This week I put in 24 hours of EMT, and 8 hours of guard. My employer told me that instead of 24 hours of EMT pay and 8 hours of guard pay, I would be getting 32 hours of $11.50. They are reducing my EMT pay by $1.50 but raising the guard pay by $1.50 aswell, then combining the hours to make whole under one payrate.

Is it legal for them to do this?

Girl forced me to have sex with her without a condom [Spain]

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 07:06 AM PST

Hello to everyone. I would first like to thank you for taking the time to read my post.

I have been having sex with this girl casually. Nothing serious. Since the begining I made it clear that I didn't want anything serious and she agreed saying that she was looking for the same thing as me. Yesterday we ended up in bed and she started to say: "Anon lets do it without a condom" and I refused several times and I turned to my side. I ended up sleeping and in the middle of the night I wake up with her on top of me having sexual relationship without a condom with me.

Some days ago she said to me that she would like to find a husband in Europe to get her visa since she is from Russia.

I'm here to get some kind of legal advice to know what I can do if she tries anything like getting pregnant or blackmail me in some kind of way.

I think it is worth to note here that I have did two things to secure myself: 1) I recorded her saying that she took the pill and that she wanted to find a husband in Europe to get her VISA 2) I have recorded myself in the next morning in the cellphone telling the story.

My mom forgot to pay property taxes for 3 years. [Georgia]

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 05:41 AM PST

My mom and stepdad bought a house 900 miles away in Georgia 13 years ago. My stepdad retires next week and they were supposed to be moving into the house finally in the next couple of weeks once he ties up all loose ends where they current live. My stepdad called me crying this morning saying that my mom has not paid the property taxes in 3 years, approximately $1,800 altogether. My stepdad has only told me that they received a letter saying that they might lose the house. I checked with the tax assessors website and see that someone else has paid those taxes in December 2017. My parents can read and write, but when it comes to official documents like this one they have a very hard time understanding the context of the actions requested of the letter. They also can't work scanners to send me a copy. My parents are driving 5 hours to my house tomorrow morning so that we can review the letter and start taking action immediately once I can understand everything. I'm looking for general information on what I should expect and to see if there is any action I can start taking now to figure out what the heck is going on. I have no experience with missed tax payments and I'm very nervous for my parents and want to start looking into this immediately. The tax assessors website isn't giving much information nor showing any indication of anything being out of the ordinary. This is in Ben Hill County Georgia. Thank you for any information!

(FL) My new roommate openly beats his wife in front of me every night. The wife is clearly miserable but refuses to seek help because she can't support herself without him. I want to find a new place to live but I'm worried to leave her alone with him. What do I do?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 10:43 AM PST

The title is the gist of the situation. The full details are below.

Backstory: 2017 was a financially bad year for me. In the course of a year the following happened: I went through a long expensive divorce, had an unexpected layoff, I had to pay for my ex-wife's rent for 5 months (while paying my own), and I had to pay off all her maxed out credit cards so it wouldn't effect my credit. I got everything paid off and behind me, however it's left me with $0 in savings. When my lease came to an end last month I decided not to renew so I could find something cheaper so I could build my savings back-up (I was paying $1500/month just for rent).

I soon learned that the only way I'm going to find cheap rent that's not in the ghetto was to find a roommate that will let me pay month-to-month. I've never lived with a roommate before but it's just a temporary solution until I build my savings back up.

Over the course of 2 weeks I met with countless weirdos that I found on craigslist and roomster. I didn't feel comfortable living with any of them and declined all their offers. Just when I was about to give up, I finally found what I thought was the perfect roommate(s). It's with a sweet older couple (55+) who own a large two story town house in a gated upper class neighborhood. They're renting the entire upstairs to me(2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, garage space, and a large living area) for only $600/month. All utilities are included in the rent. I moved in immediately because I knew I would never find such a sweet deal again.

This is where I need help. The husband is a loud abusive drunk. He's very nice to me but is a complete psychopath to his wife. He openly beats her in front of me and says the worst things you could say to a woman to her face. It doesn't matter if I'm upstairs or downstairs, I can hear the screaming and hitting from anywhere in the house. This happens on a daily basis. Two nights ago he got so drunk that he started beating her in public at a 7-11 (I was at home) and some witnesses took down their license plate as they were leaving and called the police. About 10mins after they got home the cops show up to the house. We could all see their lights through the blinds. The husband tells me and the wife to stay inside while he "handles it." We watch him as he drunkenly stumbles out the front door to talk to the cops. I was feeling so relieved because I thought justice was about to be served. He was out there talking to them for a long time. I don't know what he said to them but after about 15mins we could hear him and the cops laughing. They were laughing so hard I thought they were going to take him to TGI Friday's. The cops didn't even ask to speak to the wife. They left without doing anything.

The wife absolutely refuses to talk about what's going on. She does mental gymnastics in her head to convince herself that he doesn't abuse her. Clearly she's miserable and scared but puts up with it because without him she won't have anyone to support her.

I want to leave. I don't care if I'm out $1200 (first and last months rent), I can't be in this house anymore. However I'm worried if I leave he will kill her. If I call the cops I'm worried that either he'll talk himself out of it again or he'll get arrested and the wife will be pissed because she can't support herself without him.

I admit I was a shitty husband and that the divorce was my fault, but one thing that I hate more than anything in the world is a man who will beat his wife. This is something I can't just let go. What can/should I do?

EDIT: An important thing I forgot to mention is this guy has no memory of hitting his wife the next morning. Sober him is completely different than the person he becomes when drunk. Sober him is the nicest guy in the world, very popular in the community, and teaches Sunday school at a mega church.

Did not get paid for some wages because employer did not set up my fingerprint scan to clock in, now the hours aren't on record and they won't pay me.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 06:56 AM PST

(NE) Worked at a mcdonalds for 3 days. Each day, except for one, the manager told me that I would be clocked in by them. They apparently didn't clock me in because I did not receive that pay. One of the days the General Manager was there and actually clocked me in. What do I do to get paid? I am in desperate need for this money and probably don't have enough money to sue.

    Youtube Copyright on MMO

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 04:00 AM PST

    I'm from the United States.

I play an MMO and I upload videos of raids regularly to Youtube and stream on Twitch. Without trying to disclose too much information I recently burned bridges with someone who was close to me. They want me to remove all the videos they are in on my Youtube channel or else they will file a copyright claim for "not consenting to be in the video".

    • They KNEW and agreed when I asked if they were okay with me uploading the videos/streaming raids with them in the party of the game we were playing at the time.

    • There is no documented chatlog of this from either parties as it was done of voice communications.

    • There is NO personal information of the person filing a copyright claim in the video. Only a fictional name.

    • They actively encouraged me to stream/upload videos only to want them taken down when we part ways.

Is there anything I can do to protect myself here? Can I even do anything? These videos are the livelihood of my channel and would be heartbroken to see them taken down because of someones anger and spite towards me. So what can I do to protect myself from this false claim?

Landlord just kicked me out of my home on the spot with no warning or notice. We had no written lease just a verbal agreement. He used threats, more info below.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 12:33 AM PST

Hi all, need help!!! Out of the blue yesterday, my landlord showed up and forcefully evicted my girlfriend and I on the spot. We are in Florida, and we had been living there since late November of last year. There was never a written lease, just verbal agreement that we were both happy with, that included us living there for at least a year. He made it known that he had accepted a and cashed a check from another prospective renter weeks before to cover his own ass from the house being foreclosed on and decided to screw us and hoped we would play along out of sympathy for his problems in life. I believe most of his siblings stories to be a lie. So a new renter, who's father is supposedly a police officer, helped change the locks and started carrying out our belongings along with the landlord. The whole time he and the landlord threatened us with his cop father to come and arrest us for trespassing if we didn't comply. We were traumatized and many people witnessed the act. We were embarrassed but in the end but had no choice but to comply with their demands under duress.

There's more to it, but the bottom line is that we are now homeless with less than $20 between us. We know multiple laws were broken and that they worked together to come up with a plan to scare us into leaving.

We are contacting lawyers starting tomorrow but wanted a good starting point. All I have done was ask the landlord for help in finding a new place, which he hinted at that he might do, but did not and now there is no communication.

We have a sneaking suspicion that some good justice can be served here. Help!!!!

Edit 1: There was nothing done wrong as far as us not keeping up with the property or using the place as not intended. There was never anything said as to why we were being forced out other than he took another guy's money, could not pay it back to the new tenant and was being threatened as well by the new tenant if he didn't get his way.

I should note that I'm not sure just how in cahoots these two were the entire time or not. Stories changed like the wind and none of it made sense.

Edit 2: (this is cut and paste from an earlier response of mine further down that asked me to add it here)

I wanted to call [police] right off the bat but they both (landlord and new tenant) threatened us with going to jail and how the new tenant's ties to the local police allow abuse of power that will go untouched along with pressure to allow the eviction to happen for the sake of the landlord to save his home from foreclosure. It was a "arrest first ask questions later" intimidation that had us fear that we can no longer trust the local police to help. As of the time of this edit we do not believe the police would protect our rights due to the relatively small population and close ties the new tenant has with law enforcement.

[TX] Landlord moved in a new tenant Feb 1st and still cashed my Feb rent check.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 07:13 AM PST

My wife and I were renting this house before filing for divorce. We both moved out, informed our landlord we would like to break the lease, and continued paying rent ($2350 a month). We have a very standard lease in place.

Our landlord informed us we would have to use his agent, pay the agent's reletting fee ($2350), and after securing a new tenant we would be free of the lease that ends 4/30. I always drop our check off on the 30/31 of the month and it has never bounced. Some of our things are left in the property as we occasionally stay there, and I drop in from time to time to check in on the place and clean up.

On 1/31 I drop the check off and he asks if I can leave a key as he wants to bring a cleaner in for a viewing he has arranged. On 2/1 he texts me saying he doesn't have a contract in hand but he thinks the agent has an offer in place for Feb. I let him know that's great and I'll drop by on the weekend to clear my stuff out. He lets me know the contract starts today and he'll pay the agents fee, and for people to clean the property and do trash removal.

I had a bad feeling about this so I get to the house and the locks are being changed, new tenant moving in, and our stuff remaining at the house is being throw in a truck to go to the landfill.

What can I do about the situation? I believe he's using the "rent" to cover the agent's fee we said we'd pay, but in my eyes the agent shouldn't have made the property available until 3/1, or at least given me more than a few hours notice.

[AZ] My employer has been taking part of our tips and claiming it on her own taxes

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 10:29 AM PST

So for some background I work as a server at a sushi restaurant that also employs bussers. Long story short since I started the owner has required us to take out a 3% of our tips and pay it to the restaurant for tax purposes. I assumed this was going to be MY taxes on my paycheck but it turns out the owner has been claiming the 3% on her own taxes and getting money back for it. Similarly she also requires us to tip out 5% to the kitchen staff which I believe (not 100% sure that's why I'm here before I call a lawyer or anything) she can't require us to tip out to staff members that never have contact with customers. AND to top it all off we have proof that the bussers aren't getting the full 15% Of the tip out that's supposed to go to them, instead they're getting somewhere are 12-13%. Which even I can tell is super illegal but I don't want to call her on just that I want it all to stop. Any advice I can get will help, thanks to everyone who answers in advance

[CA, USA] Victim of odometer fraud on a used car I bought, law enforcement and the DMV are directing me to one another.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 10:58 AM PST

I recently bought a used 2006 Toyota Matrix from a private seller on Craigslist for $3300. It seemed to be in great shape, with only 121k miles on the odometer, and a seemingly good maintenance record. He claimed to have owned it for about 6 months before I came along. I bought the car on January 8th 2018.

Two weeks after purchase, the car begins to leak oil, which isn't that big of a deal, but when I checked the service manual for the date of the last repairs, I noticed the odometer on the repair receipts listed the mileage as almost 100k miles over what the odometer reads. I found multiple others official forms like AAA smog check reports as well, stating the car's mileage ranged from 180k-220k. One in particular showed the mileage at 220k on December 26th, 2017, which would have been when he owned the car.

I called the guy to ask about the repairs he never told me about, and he denied any work has been done on the car, until I mentioned the receipts. At this point, he said it might have been something his step dad did. He seemed very dodgy and I had a feeling that he was lying.

I tried searching the DMV website for a solution, but all it said was to report it to local law enforcement. When I called the police station of the county I live in, they instructed me to call the department of the county the seller resides in. I did so, but the lady on the phone said she didn't even know where to start with this issue, and directed me to California Highway Patrol instead. When I did so, all they told me was to report it to the DMV. When I attempted to call the first time, they never answered or offered a callback option. I called the DMV back the next day, only for there to be a wait time of 2 hours. I got a place in the callback queue, but they never ended up calling me.

I'm at wits end, and the last thing I can think of is to just call the seller up and hold him to an ultimatum; he either pays me portion of the money back, or I take legal action.

    What do you think, Reddit?

[LA] same guy keeps cutting me off on my way home from work if I get hit what can I do to protect my self

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 09:14 AM PST

    so a little back Ground.

This is in south Louisiana In an area where a 4 lane road condenses to a 2 lane on the other side of the intersection. The crossing road is also a major 4 lane highway with a large median. A lot of people travel this way to reach the rural area where I live so traffic tends to back up at the light a pretty good ways. So what some people will do is speed up to the traffic light in the right hand lane which is supposed to only turn right at the intersection but when they reach the light if it's green they will go straight into the intersection and force their way in front of people.

Beyond the fact that intentionally cutting people off is really just a terrible idea doing it in the middle of a very busy intersection means an accident is inevitable.

Ive traveled this route for about a year now and being in such a rural area there aren't really any other routes that dont take significantly longer (30min+). I know this kinda fuckery happens at this intersection often and driving a fairly large truck I'm always looking out for it because I dont wanna hurt anyone or my truck. But the last few days the same guy in a very small car (think f350 to a miata kinda size difference) has cut me off and almost hit me. And I don't mean like slowly forced his way in i mean as soon as the car in front of me moves and I'm trying to accelerate this guy flys in with out a touch of brakes. He did it 3 times in a row last week and the last time i didn't see him flying up next to me at 40 into the intersection. If I hadn't hit caught the glimpse of him in my mirror he either would have hit the telephone pole on the other side or been flattened under my truck. Judging by the guys car, how he looks, and responds to my horn I'm gonna guess he's prolly the type to lie at an accident or pull legal fuckery to try and get his way or screw me.

So r/legaladvice what are things I should do if/when I'm involved in an accident with this guy or someone like him to protect my self legally and make it so he can't screw me. Obviously if he cuts me off again this coming week I'm gonna call the cops but as we've seen before that doesn't always stop the problem immediately. And obviously a dash cam would help so Lets not harp on that.

Apologies for the grammar i am a swamp man after all .

Custody after domestic violence, I’m the aunt. (NC)

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 06:52 AM PST

I'll try to spare as many personal ramblings as possible but the facts of the matter are this: -my sister has had my dad staying with her about six months. During this time there were multiple incidents of all adults in the household getting drunk and having conflict. -my sister may be bipolar and self-medicating with alcohol. Apparently there are several times she's gotten drunk and violent with her husband needing to physically restrain her. There was also an incident in December where she took an entire bottle of some prescribed medication and turned all the burners on in the kitchen causing the microwave over the stove to catch fire- this was in the middle of the night. -an incident occurred a couple of nights ago when apparently they all got drunk and violent with my ten year old niece as a witness. My father left called me gave me a story in which he was the victim- his story always has holes in it. I go to my sisters house to check on my niece while all three adults are speaking with cops. And my sister then gets arrested as the primary aggressor. She's also spending this time trying to start a fight with me for being there and the cops are repeatedly asking her to stop- no other adult is behaving that way. - I understand that now that she's out of jail if she doesn't choose to go to a psychiatric center and get help we can do an IVC and make it happen. She is currently playing the victim and even blaming me for not hosting my father while he lived here or stopping the police from arresting her. I've kept screenshots of her messages just in case I guess. -my sister is staying with my mother until her court date and after that I don't know. My brother in law is prepared to take the kids and go because of all of her incidents. - my main question is with her children. Her husband is father to one and stepfather to the other. The biological father to the one is only allowed to have limited visitation and rights and is completely useless and horrible. Under no circumstance should he or his family ever get custody. What do I have to do to make sure my sister gets the help she needs- from a distance because I guess I'm just as much a bad guy as everyone else in the incident. And to care for my niece. Can my brother and law get custody of her during this? Would it make more sense for me to try? At this point I mainly care about the kids. I'd appreciate all resources and help. Thanks

I have an employee I believe to be bulimic. I want to help her, but am not sure that’s possible.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 09:27 AM PST

It's not directly affecting her performance at work, so I can't use that as a way to raise or address the issue.

We have a benefits program that has therapy, but I can only remind her about it - I can't make her use it. We're in Canada (BC), so there is no problem with health care coverage, so she could go see a doctor or a specialist with no financial worries.

I could sit down with her and say "here's what I notice...", but honestly, what good would that do? All she has to do is say "nope, not a problem" and that's the end of that conversation. It's my understanding that she's been living with this for a long time and it's getting worse, not better.

I can't share my suspicions with her family, because that would be breaching confidentiality.

We're looking at putting an emergency response in place in case there is a health care emergency with her, but that just helps the staff around her cope, it doesn't address her actual needs.

How do I, as an employer, help? Is that even possible?

Pawn shop lost my mother's $12,000 ring

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 11:30 AM PST

    Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
My mother pawned her $12,000 ring the previous Christmas for $500. She just needed a little extra Christmas money. I went to go get it out for her in October. This should not have been a problem, she made all of her payments. After an hour of them searching and already closing the store for the evening, I told them, "no worries, just call me tomorrow when you find it." After not hearing from them by late afternoon, I decided to take them a copy of the "estimated replacement value" document that you give to your insurance company. This way they would have a detailed description of the ring. It also states that the replacement value is $12,700. After several weeks and us always contacting them, they say they are unable to recover my mothers ring. At which point they offered my mother a replacement ring of equal value. My mother said absolutely not, this ring is very special to her and she did not want just anyone's ring, she wanted HER ring. It is a semi custom ring that I, her only daughter, gifted her for her 50th birthday. They then asked, "what would you like then?" She responded by telling them that if she cannot have her ring, then she would settle for the replacement value. They said they would have their legal department contact her. They have contacted her one time, we have had to call them every week. Last week they said that without the receipt, they would only give her $1500. Even though they have not even laid eyes upon my mother's ring, they felt this is what it is worth. I grabbed the phone and told them that, "now you are just being insulting and we will have an attorney get involved." Let me prefice this by saying, I have divorced and have moved four times since this ring was purchased 12 years ago. Not to mention I am currently in the process of moving to another state and most of my belongings are in boxes. I CANNOT FIND THE RECEIPT ANYWHERE. The jewelry store I purchased it from closed down about 2 years ago, after being open for over 100 years. I reached out the the new jewelry store that had purchased the original store, to see if, by chance, they might have a copy of the receipt. The manager of the new store stated that they only purchased the building and did not have any of the original stores records. I am feeling pretty defeated right now. I was telling my son that I don't even know what type of attorney I need to hire for this and he told me to ask reddit. So here I am, hoping for some guidance. We only want them to do the right thing. Thank you for listening and thank you, in advance, for any solid advice that we receive.

I do not need to be belittled over this or questioned why she did what she did. It is done and there was no way she would have ever dreamed they would lose it. I need helpful advice, not judgmental opinions. She is a wreck over this and has a ton of guilt about it. Thank you for understanding.

[PA] Apartment office returned my package to sender without notifying me. eBay tracking shows delivered to me. Seller will not issue me a refund. What can be done?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 08:53 AM PST

[PA] I ordered an item off eBay with a different name. I used my cousins name cause I wanted to give him the package. It was delivered to my apartment complex's office. They returned to sender because they didn't recognize the name, even though it has my address on it. Are they even allowed to do that? Isn't it still legally my mail?

Well the tracking number doesn't say returned to sender on it. So eBay closed the case without issuing me a refund. The seller will not return my messages because I'm sure they got their package back and don't have to refund me so they're going to plead the fifth.

It's only $50 but I'm still really upset because money is tight and I gotta buy another one. Can I make my landlord pay for it?

(CA) Took my laptop to best buy for repair, someone used my amazon account while it was being repaired

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 07:16 PM PST

I still have warranty for my laptop purchased from Best Buy. Some of the keys are not working to brought it to Best Buy's Geek Squad on the 31st. I stupidly backed up everything but forgot to clear my passwords on Chrome. This morning at 12:35 AM someone logged on to my Amazon Account, bought a month of prime membership ($14.22), 2 pairs of earbuds($10.99), and a wireless charger pad ($8.99).

I got a notification email after waking up and camcelled all these orders. Then called Geek Squad and they say they will have a supervisor call me in 48-72 hours. What should I do in this situation? No money was lost, given that all the refunds go throught but there was a breach of privacy here. Is this grounds for a lawsuit? Is it even worth it? TIA

Copyright, fair use, and monetization (FL)

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 06:25 AM PST

Hi all! I'm a middle school language arts teacher. I'm about to teach a lesson on figurative language, using the lyrics from recently popular songs as examples. I know that using the lyrics and songs in my classroom falls under the educational reason aspect of fair use, but here's my question.

A fair amount of people have been intrigued by my lesson, to the point that it's been recommended I put the lesson up for sale on a teacher resource site. If the slideshow I'm using has no more than 3 lines from any song, I am not including the actual songs in the materials (just a list of the songs being used), and I'm properly attributing the lyrics within the slideshow, can I monetize what I've created? Or is it a violation of copyright, and not falling under fair use?

Don't worry, I'm not one of those assholes who would be like "hurr hurr, I'm going to do it anyway!" If told it's a violation.

    Thank you!

[IN] Is my landlord/rental management company responsible for an outrageous electric bill if the furnace was improperly secured/connected?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 07:07 AM PST

My latest electric bill was just under $600 for a two bedroom, 1 bath house about 1,200 sq. ft. So, I went down to the crawl space and checked out the furnace, finding out that there is a sizable gap in between the unit and where it connects to the HVAC leading up into the house. I've basically been paying to heat my crawl space. There's also no filter at all in the furnace, and my lease states it will be changed by maintenance quarterly, which hasn't happened in the seven months I've been here. If it makes a difference, I also don't have a smoke/carbon monoxide detector (adding this to show further negligence).

I have to pay this crazy ass bill to keep my power on, but do I have any options for reimbursement if, say, I took it to court?

Being Listed as an inhabitant on lease?(MD)

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 09:39 AM PST

I moved in with my family a few months ago to help them with bills after a major medical crisis. They are planning to downsize to a different home as I am due to be going back to my own life in the next 6-8 months.

While looking, they found a place they really want, but there is a snag. While most places I've seen want you to prove you make at least 3 times what the rent is a month (the 30% rule), this place is asking for their income to be 5 times what the rent is, which makes it a little out of their reach.

The person showing the place heard that I was planning on moving out shortly after, and suggested I be listed as an inhabitant on the lease, that way my income would count towards the lease, but I wasn't tied to it and I didn't have to sign the lease.

Now, I'll probably be at this place for no more than 2-3 months, and I know my family is good with money and that me leaving would not be a barrier to them affording the place. What I'm worried about is doing this, and then x years down the road this place tracking me down and trying to have me pay for repairs/anything (I love and trust my family, but I'm also paranoid). TL;DR, Would being listed as an inhabitant on a lease leave me responsible for anything regarding the lease, such as damages, back rent, etc?

    Area is Maryland USA.
