(MI) Found out my mother used our address to get some guy his state ID card and his social security card.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:03 AM PST

Just found out that my mother used our (my spouse, our kids, and myself) address to help some guy she works with get his state ID and social security card. She lived with us a few years ago and never bothered to change her address on her driver's license. She called to ask me not to throw anything away if I got some mail for this guy. Then she told me that she had to help him out because nobody at the house he is living at has a driver's license (DUIs) and he needed somebody with a state ID to say he lives at that address.

I'm furious. What did she just do? I'm pretty sure this is illegal. "They just told me he could change his address as soon as his license comes in the mail." That's my mailbox not his.

My sister works for DHHS. She said people try this crap all the time and the post office probably won't even deliver it. Suspicious mail to someone not registered at that address.

    It gets worse.

My mother later told my sister that she had to fill out some papers stating this guy was a tenant at our address. WTF?

What the hell has she done? We own our home, have lived her for 19 years, she hasn't lived here in probably 5 years. In 19 years she has moved into our spare bedroom 2-3 times.

TLDR My mother used my address to say some guy is her tenant to get him a state ID and social security card. How much did she fuck up? I'm livid! How much trouble are we in and wtf do I do about it?

    Update :

I went to our post office and they placed a return to sender order on anything that is addressed to him. Now, I'm going to contact his boss and let him know. His boss is a family friend. Just giving him a heads up that the kid is not getting his ID or SS card. And that they need to go through the legal channels to do it correctly. Hopefully he really is a nice kid and it will be a life lesson to not take short cuts. And if he's a scammer now his boss will know.

Update: [PA]Landlord refusing to remove bird from bedroom wall

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 10:10 AM PST

    Here's the original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/7zrolo/palandlord_refusing_to_remove_bird_from_bedroom/?st=je1o11wh&sh=2f9b58e6

I know this was just posted less than a day ago, but I managed to get the birds free! I stayed at my girlfriend's last night and when I got home today I really felt like I had to do something. I tried calling the wildlife control guy that I spoke to yesterday but he didn't answer. So, I managed to dig a little hole in my shelf so they could fly out (yes, there were actually two birds in there!)

    Here's a picture & video of their escape: https://imgur.com/a/BvPJ7 https://streamable.com/v36cq

My wife is threatening to take everything away from me.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 05:29 AM PST

I posted this over in /relationships, and they removed the post and directed me to here. So here we go.

New account to hide my identity. My wife and I have been married for 4 years now. At first everything was going good and then slowly the sex faded away. In the past 6 months we have only had sex twice, and it was just dull like she just wanted it to be over. Everytime I ask her what is wrong, she blames me for never being around. I work a lot and love what I do, but I still am home every night and on the weekends, so it isn't like I'm never around.

Well yesterday I went to her employee appreciation party and seen her and another guy making weird eye contact. It was like he was saying "what in the hell is he doing here", to her. I just knew something was up, so I told her I was stepping outside to get some fresh air. When I stepped outside, I quickly went to a window that has a view of the entire party and I could see her walking over to him. They chatted for a good 5 minutes before walking away from each other.

I went back inside, grabbed another beer and acted like nothing happened. As the night grew on she began drinking more and acting cold towards me, so I just went my way and talked to a group of guys that were also there for the party. During the conversation I was having with these people, I kept a close eye on her throughout the night...or so I thought. After going to grab another beer, I noticed she wasn't anywhere to be seen so I went looking for her.

After looking around inside and not finding her, I went outside to look for her and that's when I witnessed her and that other guy kissing. My stomach dropped and I felt sick. I just turned around and walked back inside to find the bathroom so I could splash water on my face. My heart was racing and I kept telling myself to go start beating on this guy, but for whatever reason something was telling me don't.

I calmed myself down the best I could and went back out to the party, where shortly thereafter my wife walks back in. I told her we needed to go home because I wasn't feeling well, so we left. Once we got in the car I just wanted to get and yell at her all at the same time. The vision of them two kissing was ripping me apart.

Finally after 10 mins of silence on the way home, I said "are you fucking him". And of course she acted totally confused about what I was asking, so that's when I said I watched the two of you kiss. Her response is they're just friends, which I told her friends don't go fucking kissing one another at night while hiding behind a building. Well that then pissed her off and an argument began.

Within that argument she spilled everything. She told me she isn't in love with me and doesn't find me attractive anymore. Her and this other guy have had a relationship going on for the past 4 months and she loves him. Then she says if I don't accept their relationship, then she will divorce me and take everything I have. My retirement plan, savings, grandparents inheritance, house, cars, toys...everything. I told her that would be impossible and would never be granted by a judge, which she replied to me by saying, "try me".

What should I even do about this. Can she really take me for everything? I want to divorce her like now, but not if that means her getting everything.

Edit: I think I need to add that we have no children, thankfully. I also received my inheritance after we were married, but everything else I had beforehand. Gosh I feel so confused, sad and angry...never had a feeling like this before.

Update: I want to thank everyone for their advice on how I should go about this, considering I feel ashamed to bring this up to my family, because I don't want them to think badly of her.

I'm so confused and just feel detached from reality right now...almost like I'm in a fog or something. Anyway, my wife came home from work this evening and said she was staying at a friend's house for a few days. I begged her not to leave, as I'm sure the friend is this guy she is seeing, but she left anyhow.

Gosh I would give anything to go back in the past and not work so much just to make things back to normal. I only wanted the best for us, so I did my best by advancing through the corporate ladder, which unfortunately led to long work days. So many memories from when we started dating when teens...cant believe she would forget of all of them for another person.

    Edit: we live in Illinois

[CA] My husband (loss prevention officer) framed an innocent woman for attempted murder. How much is he screwed?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 12:59 PM PST

TL;DR: My soon-to-be ex-husband tried to frame innocent woman for attempted murder, how much screwed he is?

Let me preface that I myself am not in trouble, I'm not looking for advice, I just want an assessment on how much shit my husband is in, because the outcome of this incident will probably impact our divorce proceedings. So I hope I qualify for this sub.

Anyway, my husband works (worked) as loss prevention officer in large clothing store in mid-sized California town. A month ago, he and his buddy (who I have known to be a scumbag even before this incident) apprehended a suspected shoplifter in the parking lot. She walked out of the store dressed in a jacket they were selling, my husband and his buddy caught up to her when she was pulling out of her spot. She allegedly tried to run them over, they dragged her out of the car and she fought them. She ended up with broken arm, ribs and concussion. Cops were called, they took statements and arrested her. All cameras were out of order that day (they legitimatelly were, the footage didn't "dissappear"), so it was her word against theirs, there were no other witnesses, however prosecutor decided he had enough to move forward and charged her with petty theft, aggravated assault and attempted murder. She probably would have been convicted of at least some of the charges, if she didn't came up with:

    • Receipt and bank statement showing she purchased the jacket in another store 2 days earlier
    • security footage from restaurant some time earlier showing her wearing the same jacket she was suspected of shoplifting.
    • dashcam from her car

The last one is the most serious one. I've seen it and it plays out like this: She pulls out of her parking spot, sees my husband and his buddy running towards her. She stops, my husband opens her door and tells her to get out. She doesn't have any idea what the hell is going on. My husband tells her they know she's a thief and she better get out. She says she's going to call 911. My husband and her buddy pull her out without any provocation, this is followed by sounds of a short beating, woman crying and my husband's buddy screaming something to the spirit of "you wanna fuck with me, bitch". Then they realize they probably went a little overboard and they can be heard discussing what they're going to tell cops. Finally, they decide that they will say she tried to run them over with her car and fight them. She says "I didn't do anything" to which my husband replies "I know but who's going to believe you".

At no point during the footage she came even close to assaulting my husband and his buddy and their conversation leaves absolutely no doubt that this wasn't a misunderstanding and they purposedly made everything up (I mean the assault with the car, as far as the shoplifting goes, that was probably a honest mistake on their part).

When I first saw the footage I was shocked. Our relationship has been deteriorating for a while before this incident but I still could't believe my husband was capable of something like this. I knew him as a completely different person. When I confronted him about it, he said he didn't know she was going to be charged with attempted murder, he thought that lying about the assault will just make their shoplifting claim more convincing (since they had no footage or witnesses). Plus they had to cover their ass for the beating. He also tried to claim that it was his buddy who did majority of it, but I'm not buying it. Nevertheless, I packed my stuff, moved to my parents and filled for divorce.

Obviously, prosecutor immediatelly dropped all the charges, he was super pissed and told my husband that this would have consequences. So I'm assuming this won't just go away.

    So my question is:

    • What can they charge my husband with?
    • What's the possible sentence?
    • Does he have any personal financial liability?

edit: just minor details, to give you better picture.

edit 2: Also I should probably say that the only thing I saw myself is the dashcam video. As for the rest, I know only what my husband told me, so don't take it at face value.

Commercial Dumpster Company is trashing my house (New York City)

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 07:47 AM PST

My house is next door to a Hotel. Their Garbage pickup is handled by a private company. They leave the dumpsters in a place where it is constantly hitting my house and causing damage to the siding and the insulation.

    here is a picture https://imgur.com/SFuX9Z3

The siding is less than 5 years old.

I've talked to the hotel owner about moving the dumpsters, but nothing has been done

I tried calling the number on the side of the dumpster and leave messages inviting them to call me back, but i'm getting radio silence.

I've called 311, NYC's non-emergency help number, but they said they could only refer me to the courts or moderators or the bar association since the dumpster is not NYC sanitation property, and the damage is going to cause safety issue for the building.

Who is responsible? what is my recourse?

Friend is supposed to be pet sitting dogs while we’re away. Threatening to turn them into Humane Society if we don’t return immediately. Springfield, Missouri.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 08:48 AM PST

My girlfriend lives in Springfield, Missouri and went to Orlando, Florida for a job interview. She was supposed to be gone a week. Beforehand, she asked her best friend to watch her dogs. Her friend agreed. While in Orlando, she was told she needed to stay an additional three days for a physical as a condition of employment. When my girlfriend called her friend to let her know she would be staying longer, her friend said it was unacceptable and threatened to surrender the dogs to the humane society unless she returned right away. Is this legal? What kind of recourse would she have if her friend actually followed through?

    Am I getting scammed?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:47 AM PST

So, I'm trying to sell an item on Craigslist and the "buyer" said he'd send a check through the mail, I would then deduct the item fee from the check then give the rest to his mover's money gram. I'm kinda sceptical but don't know for sure.

Edit: Thanks guys. I blocked the number. He was even offering more than the asking price. That's when I should've knew.

    My ex-husband’s wedding

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:02 AM PST

I'm wondering if there's any way that my ex-husband can legally demand that I bring our 3 year old son to his wedding? Not that it matters, but we haven't even legally been divorced for a year...

My son hardly knows his father and I have 100% physical custody of him. We haven't lived together since my son was a year old. We don't live in the same vicinity at all so there's no regular visitation.

My ex-husband is apparently getting married in the fall and is requesting that our son attend. That would require me to travel and bring him. His family has never even acknowledged my son's existence - there are just so many factors. It's just not gonna happen. Can he force this to happen?

Edited to clarify that he's never been alone with our son. All unofficial visitation (which has been few and far between) has been in my presence and I've accompanied all outings since my child is so young and with me 100% of the time.

(MO) Neighbor has unstabled horses in their backyard with a dog that keeps attacking them

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 10:57 AM PST

The neighbor next-door to my moms house owns two horses and a German Shepherd. We've made a couple of calls to the city, because the horses have been outside during every type of inclement weather imaginable. There is no stable, they're only fenced in. They also have a German Shepherd with them, but it spends most of its time nipping at the horses legs, and the horses are very visibly distraught by it. Is there anything else we can do? It breaks my heart to see these horses have to spend their time like that.

    [NJ] Inheriting a Handgun

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 10:50 AM PST

My grandfather has Alzheimer's and was placed in a 24/7 care center. My mother is the sole beneficiary of the will and has power of attorney. When my mother found the handgun in his house while cleaning it for sale, she didn't want it and didn't know what to do with it so she gave it to me.

I have a firearms ID card already, but I don't have a permit to purchase a Handgun.

I called my township police of the town that I live in and nobody had a clue what to do.

Is there any paperwork or documentation I have to fill out? The gun is for sure an antique but it can definitely be restored to operating condition.

I'm leaning towards this not being an inheritance directly to me. But more so a gift from my mother.

    Edit: Added additional information.

Former employer contacting potential new employers and telling them I shouldn't be hired

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 12:20 AM PST

I recently resigned from a company and didn't leave on the best terms. During the final steps of an interview with a new company, I was emailed and told that they would not move forward. I contacted them for feedback and was told that my former CEO called them (they didn't call her, as I didn't use her as a reference) and stated that I was someone that shouldn't be hired and resigned before I could be fired (not true). I'm completely surprised by this and I have no idea how the CEO knew which companies I have been interviewing for -- and I fear that she is trying to blackball me. I have several more interviews coming up and am scared that they will end in the same way. Is there anything I could do to prevent this?

    I'm in California.

    Thanks for any help.

    Ex-Roommate Scammed Me

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 12:13 PM PST

Roughly two years ago I rented an apartment in Queens, NY, along with a roommate. I offered a year up front (40k) in exchange for a 12 month lease to which they obliged. We BOTH signed the lease and promptly moved in with, let's call him, Gary, agreed to pay me back half of the rent ($20,000) plus other expenses like clothes or food over time.

Sure enough months came around and he had yet to even step foot out there looking for a job or even selling his artwork downtown (which people make a killing doing) and/or online. 10 months in I had to kick him out. I was drowning. He had said he would still pay me back another time in the future when he was 'on his feet', even though he JUST landed a free ride for a full year. Also, its worth noting it was a three bedroom apartment in which he used two of them, one for his room and one for what was an art studio. If I were to have rented those out I would've likely been looking at 2,500 a month or more in rent from paying roommates.

Months after he left I tried to reach him multiple times but to no avail. Randomly, Gary texted me at midnight months from departure to troll me for still owing money. In our conversation, I don't know if he was intoxicated or just unintelligent, he implicated himself by saying he owed for rent to the tune of 16k and then agreed on paying me back for the other provisions since I have proof of purchase and receipts. All this on text one night. At the end of our talk he said he that he'd pay via PayPal and asked for my address to send. I provided it to him and have yet to hear from him.

I checked the statute of limitations in the State of NY for 'contract in writing', 'contract oral or not in writing' and 'debt collection' and all have a 6 years. I'm currently living in Texas now and Gary still lives in NY. I would like to sue for a max of 25k, from what I've researched, suing for over 25,000 requires a higher court of law and would likely take more money for legal fees and/or more time. Any council is appreciated before I speak with a lawyer to pursue.

    Thanks, N

Parking ticket but paint was illegible

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 09:22 AM PST

I'm a student in college and have a student parking pass I always display. Recently I accidentally parked in "staff" parking and received a ticket. My issue with the ticket was that I had no idea the space was for staff (not student) parking because the paint they put down on that parking spot was so eroded and chipped you couldn't tell/read what the paint even said. This was similar for an entire block/row of parking spaces in the same row, where the paint was so chipped or blackened that NONE of the parking spaces clearly read anything and if you were driving through you might've actually thought the paint was tarred over, because it was so blackened and chipped.

I was not the only person who made this mistake as there was another student next to me with a displayed student parking pass, but who also accidentally parked in Staff, so they also got a ticket.

I also suspect that this row of illegible staff parking is a "honey pot" for parking tickets for the school.

Does anyone familiar with school parking tickets know what I can do? I've sent in an appeal but it was denied with them just reiterating that I parked in staff (they didn't address the illegible paint), I was wondering if there were any entities I could contact to complain about the parking situation because the paint is so chipped and black you can't even tell what it says or that it's even for staff and not students

I also parked there at 6am in the morning so it was dark out (the "staff" blob was cast in shadow) and none of the paint illuminated back in my headlights.

In the 2nd pick the empty spot to the left was where I parked/what I see pulling into the parking spot

Are there any laws/enforcement codes about proper signage I can bring up if I try to find a second way to appeal? Since my first appeal was denied. Thanks.

(CALIFORNIA) My sister moved in and is threatening to throw away everything I own

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 12:07 PM PST

So basically, my dad passed away on Jan 15th 2018 and for some reason my sister thought it would be a good idea to move back into the house I live in (my dad's house). My grandparents own the house.

Side note: I cut my sister out of my life several years ago because she is a toxic person, only became civil recently for my dad's sake but now that he's gone I have no reason to talk to her.

So on to what I need advice about, she is threatening to throw away all of my belongings in the garage that I have stored there because I have literally nowhere else to put them. Can she legally throw away all of my stuff? What can I do to prevent this from happening or if it happens when I'm not home (like right now) what can I do?

Im sorry if this doesn't make much sense I'm having trouble getting my thoughts together I'm so angry

(NYC) Held Against My Will in Psych Ward

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 08:58 AM PST

    Hello,

It is hard to provide complete details, but for the last week or so I have been overworked and was having trouble sleeping. On Wednesday I began to have the suspicion that I was being followed and seeing the same faces and cars following me around. This experience was giving me extreme anxiety, to the point where I left my apartment and checked myself into a hotel. I was previously diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, ADHD and generalized anxiety.
Last night I decided that I was tired of living in fear, and went to the ER hoping that they would prescribe a short term medication that would help me relax, stop my mind from racing, so I could go home and get a good night's rest.
Instead the doctor gave me two medications, I think one was Zyprexa or something along those lines. At first she told me I had to stay an hour to see how I am effected by the medication. Then it turned into being told I had to stay the night and that I had no choice.
Next I woke up and found that I was in the psych ward. The only thing that I have been told is that I am an "involuntary patient" and will be here until at least monday. I have not been told of any treatment plan, been given any medications, and have no idea what is going on.
I have never once indicated that I was a danger to myself or others. At this point being held here against my will with no idea as to what is going on is making my anxiety worse. I am 27 years old.
What are my options? What can I do to get out of here?
    I am in NYC.

(IL) Locked out of my accounts due to my parents' shady financial behavior.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 08:40 AM PST

    Hi all,

First--I really dig that there are so many folks out there who take the time to answer questions like this. Super rad--thanks in advance for reading along.

Background information needed to understand the big picture:

    • I lived in Rhode Island with my parents until I was 17. My parents irresponsible with their finances, had a bankruptcy, sold their house and moved to North Carolina. I never went with them.

    • I have been financially independent since age 17 (including tax returns, FAFSA)

    • I had some federal savings bonds that were purchased for me by relatives that were meant to pay for my college education. My father has the same uncommon name as me and cashed those in without my consent, either in North Carolina or Florida, and to my knowledge, used them to buy a new car.

    • I have not so much as visited them since 2008 and have no intention on re-opening this communication channel.

    • I currently live in Illinois and my birth parents live somewhere in Florida.

    Problem:

My checking account was compromised. My parents did shady financial transactions in Florida without my consent and at some point they used my information. The security questions that customer service from the bank asks me relate to my parents' information and I don't have the answers, including property (and what car they bought... ugh) in Florida and North Carolina. The bank will not release my new debit card to me, or update my contact information, because I do not have answers to these public records-based questions.

This comes up time and time again for any financial transaction with external vendors because I have my father's name. My parents have things like bankruptcy on their public records and it comes up when I'm looked up for financial inquiries. It's all tied to my social security number for some reason, but not on my credit report.

    Questions:

Do I need a lawyer to get my parents' personal and financial information off my public records--if so what kind of lawyer?

My suspicion, purely subjectively is that I may have been put on their tax returns or other federal or state benefit applications in North Carolina/Florida without my consent while I was living in Rhode Island. Is this something that would come up in the process of trying to separate my records from theirs?

Thanks for reading along. I'm at my limit with this.

I don't live in the US, but Virginia still considers me a resident. How do I get out?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:06 AM PST

I have no property in VA. I'm relinquishing my driver's license. I still have to show proof to "someone" that I've acquired a domicile elsewhere in order to not have to file state taxes. Who needs to see this proof? I can't seem to find any information on who to talk to about changing my residency status away from Virginia--just that I have to do it. Have you got any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

Bought a car, a house, then married my wife in September. All was good until out federal taxes were taken and we got an invoice for 48k. Am I safe? (NY)

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 11:51 AM PST

Just as the post says, I was just getting my adult life together with my long time girlfriend. We both knew that she had student debt but didn't figure it would come back to bit me in the ass. The loan is about 48k. We got married so she could have insurance, as she needed it direly. What's going to happen to MY funds and paychecks. I realize they can garnish her wages but can they garnish mine if I'm not the loanee? Why do we talk to about this to take care of it in a fashion that won't kill us monetarily? I'm fucking freaking out.

We don't have any shared bank accounts and as far as I know they only took our federal tax refund for repayment. Her name isn't tied to my house loan or my car loan.

Did I screw myself on my first apartment lease?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 11:19 AM PST

So three years ago I my first lease at an apartment. I live in Tennesse and now know a lot more about renting properties and how to deal with landlords. Long story short I didn't pay entirety of my last month's rent and left some money + deposit to cover it. I have no problem paying the like $200 Or so rent I could owe them if they used the entire deposit for repairs or whatnot. The problem is in the past few weeks my friend got a call for me from a legal team attempting to collect $2000. To put this in perspective I had the exact same phone and number an entire year after leaving and my roommate had the same number for about 1 1/2 year as well. Neither of us were ever contacted by phone or received any mail until two weeks ago.

I called the landlord and she sent me a bill with 1200$ in flooring and vinyl damage among some other charges (legal fees, missed rent, etc.) To clarify neither I not my roommate can remember any damages at all pet alone $1200 worth. Main question is can I challenge this or because I didn't do a walkthrough or take pics am I just plain screwed?

Edit: The apartment complex also is also part of the LIHTC program which is a low income housing program. I don't know if if this changes anything just trying to give as much info as possible.

In a one party consent province, if the other person figures out I'm recording and says they don't consent to being recorded, do I have to stop?

    Ontario

This is just covering my ass but would I have to stop recording or could I cite that it's one party consent and I don't need their consent. I know if I do the conversation will probably end there but it's still good to know.

Car dealership used temp plates to go through toll, now we are getting the bill

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:00 AM PST

We bought a car from a dealership (Texas) and it seems the temporary plates from our car were also used on another car to drive through tolls (after we purchased the car) in a different city than where we live. Now we are getting the bill.

The picture from the toll company is of a different make and model car than what we bought (ie. not our car).

One toll was dated when we had the temp plates and one was dated after we received our real plates.

The toll people said to contact the dealership. The dealership is ignoring the problem (we sent them pictures of the bill we received). Now we are getting late notices from unpaid bills.

Temp plates on the toll record match the ones from our paperwork.

This is a large, big-name dealership, not a no-name, individual one.

    What can we do? BBB?

(Not sure what flair to use. Business?)

Employer put higher amount on husband’s W2 than what he actually made. Now he won’t fix it. How to proceed? Do we need a lawyer?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 01:02 PM PST

My husband works for a bar owned by a shady piece of shit. We live in NYC. Last year he made no more than 8k working there, part time gig.

Shady piece of shit then proceeds to claim him on w2 for $29 k. No way did we earn $29,000 from that place. We still haven't even filed the W2, but he apparently has on his end. We have talked to other employees who have also had their W2s altered to reflect a higher amount than they made, although nothing as extreme as his.

Employer is lying and skipping around subject. Just asking where we stand legally and what can be done?
