After reading Dave Ramsey... should we dump our Variable Life Policies?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:16 PM PST

Hello! I'm going to write in bullet points to make this more straightforward for me. Should we dump our Variable Life policy?

    • Husband (37) and I (32) have 403B accounts through Metlife for work.
    • After having our first kid we decide we wanted a life insurance policy in case one of us died. We have two kids now, 3 yo/2 yo.
    • Went to the same agent we got our 403B's from since thats the only insurance agent we knew.
    • Here are how the options were presented to us from what we told (from memory):
    • 1. (term?)Life insurance that has a term, once term is over you get nothing. If you die, partner gets the insurance.
    • 2. (variable)Life insurance that has no term, is life long, needs a basic medical exam, has fixed premiums, and gains cash over time. As long as premiums are paid, no issue.
    • We decided to do the second option since we didn't want to just pay for something that we hoped would never get used. Had someone come to our home and took our weight, age, blood, and asked some questions.
    • After the medical example, my policy (500k) came back at $120 a month and husband's policy (500k) came back at $170 a month.
    • These rates are locked in for life
    • We liked the idea that if we paid $370 a month for the rest of our lives, our kids would get $1,000,000 when we died (plus the extra value it gained).
    • We look at it like an inheritance that we can give me. Worst case, one of us dies and we can pay all out bills/mortgage so that the other person can greave and not worry about working.
    • After reading Dave Ramsey's financial planning book it seems like nothing other than term is a good idea.
    • I'm not sure WHY our plan is bad because on the surface it seems decent, no?
    • I emailed out agent this morning and asked about switching to term insurance and here was her reply "You have variable life which is way cheaper than whole life. Your policy can be used for education, retirement, etc as you are building cash value in this policy. You can purchase a term policy which will be cheaper and cancel your current policies if you wish. You would have to go through underwriting and make sure you understand that term policies only pay if/when you do pass away during the term of the policy (10, 20 years) The ones you have now are in place until you die (whenever that is)
    • Any advice would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

Just had a car accident where I wasn't at fault but what if he doesn't have insurance?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 09:59 PM PST

I apologize if this isn't the right sub for this - just point me in the right direction and I'll delete this.

My car is pretty messed up which is a shame because it's almost brand new and I'm financing it... Anyway the guy who hit me in a nearly head on collision was drunk or otherwise incapacitated and was taken away in a stretcher without giving a statement so I don't know anything any him. He was driving a beat up older car and I just worry that he isn't insured. If that's the case then is it likely my insurance will just foot the bill and my premiums etc go up?

Any help or anecdotes would be much appreciated as I'm still a bit frazzled from the incident and don't have anyone else to talk to. Thank you in advance

Estimate back after collision with cable barrier - Iowa

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 05:59 PM PST

After a week, we finally have an estimate, and we're waiting on the call from State Farm to see what they are going to do, but I want/need to be prepared beforehand.

The car is a 2006 Nissan Sentra. We got caught up in a mini-snowstorm as we were coming home - to avoid said snowstorm- and a semi flipped and we and about 30+ other vehicles all went off the roads. We didn't hit anyone, we took the shoulder when it was obvious that we were sliding blah blah blah, hit a cable barrier. Which, thank god because I can't imagine the mess if we hit another person.

Value of our car is maybe 6 - 6.5k maybe. It's what we can buy a near identical a year older, if we were to go to Illinois and replace it. Estimate (not including that it sat in a tow lot for 3-4 days because of presidents day, car rental, towing etc etc.) is $4,200 after our deductible.

I'm suspecting given the age of the car, they're going to just declare it a total loss. My spouse states they'll repair it, they have to repair it if we demand it, that we can't afford to replace it. We can't/we can it's tricky.

Will they or won't they? We actually really like this car (sentimental value has no real value, I know), it's been a solid car and has needed very little if any repairs. But if the odds of them totaling it and cutting a check (I know, don't accept the first, negotiate higher/cost to go out and buy one right now) are pretty high, I need to start looking for a new (to us) car within our budget and I don't want to argue with my spouse anymore over a stupid car that did it's job, kept us safe and 12 years is a good run.

Had a procedure done. Doctor billed incorrectly. Insurance says this means they get nothing, but doctor wants to collect from me.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 05:38 AM PST

After the procedure, I got several different documents from my insurance and from the doctor all with different amounts due. After a few calls to my health insurance, they explained that the doctor failed to pre-authorize the procedure as they were required, and so as per their agreement they have to "eat the cost," to use the exact words I was told.

The doctor's office was unhappy about this. They fought my insurance on it. I got a follow up voicemail a week later saying it's now final and I don't owe anything, because they have to eat the cost.

The doctor's office continues now to send me bills for this. What should my next step be?

Penalty for being uninsured for past 2 months?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 05:25 PM PST

I was covered by Cal-Optima MediCal in California until December 31st last year. I was unemployed for awhile until I started a new contractor job last December 1st. But my new job will start offering me insurance asap.

Do I have to pay a penalty for being uninsured the past 2 months? What do I have to do?

    Car Insurance NY Question

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 04:59 PM PST

Hey reddit, so I added my dad to my insurance policy, and adding him did not result in an increased monthly rate. Essentially it stayed the same. Currently I have an accident prevention course added for myself which gave me a 10% discount off the total policy amount. Can my dad do the same thing under my policy and reduce it further by another 10%?

Problems with homeowners insurance claim - water damage.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 04:27 PM PST

We recently discovered water leaking from our upstairs bathroom through the ceiling of our kitchen. Called Roto Rooter. They discovered that it was a pipe connector to the jacuzzi tub. Call our home owners insurance because project involves tearing out the tub, taking down cabinets in the kitchen, redoing the ceiling and getting rid of the mold in there from the incident. Insurance (Safeco) send out someone (Pura Clean), who confirms the problem, and says they can do nothing until the tub is taken out, which is for a plumber to do. Pass all of this on to adjuster.

I inform adjuster that we don't want to use several companies and try to work out timing, and would prefer to just go with one contractor. Response: "It is highly unlikely to find a contractor that will do the plumbing work, mitigation and reconstruction. Generally, these items do require a special trade to complete the work. We issue the payments once we receive the invoices. For the plumber, they may require you to pay them once the work is complete. In this case, you will be responsible for paying them up front but as soon as you forward me the invoice we will issue the reimbursement for any funds owed above your deductible. The mitigation team will be ready to jump right in and get started as soon as the tub has been removed."

I don't want to use who they are telling me to use. I also don't want to be reimbursed for invoices, I want my claim settled and then look for contractors myself. It looks like they are refusing to give me an estimate of the claims. I'm at a loss as to what to do.

Car Insurance Question About Liberty Mutual

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:55 PM PST

So I got a letter in the mail from my Credit Union offering me Liberty Mutual life insurance. Snazzy coincidence, because Geico insurance increased $40 a month. Why the increase? Something about rising cost of healthcare, or something totally unrelated to my perfect driving record.

So I call up the number, I love my Credit Union. And I get an amazing quote that's almost half the cost of my new Geico monthly payment. What sketched me out was that he asked for my account and routing number. Lol wut. I've never heard of that before. I offered my credit card, but he said there would be extra charges. He really wanted these numbers and kept saying the rate wont stay the same if I don't do it right away.

Then I look up Liberty Mutual and I've started seeing Scam Reports.

This is taken from the letter I got.

"As a Member of ______ Credit Union and Colorado driver, you're now eligible for the TruStage Auto & Home Insurance Program, which could save you $509 on car insurance coverage underwritten by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company."

Should I be sketched out or just finally say Piss Off to Geico and give this guy my account and routing number?

Also, he mentioned using a tracker app on my phone for safe driving. Is that something I should agree to?

Car insurance company won't cover damages to borrowed car

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 11:14 AM PST

Okay, so here's the situation. In the past couple of months, I moved in with my fiance. I don't have a car. I sometimes use her car to drive myself to work or to the store down the street to pick up smokes, what have you. She has full coverage but I am not on her policy.

This past Sunday, as I was pulling out of said store, I was hit by a car. Because I was pulling out of a private drive onto a public road, she had the right of way even though she was speeding and I'm pretty sure she was on her phone. Whatever, I'm not gonna dispute it. Don't have the money or resources, I should have been more careful anyway. And maybe it doesn't matter.

Well, I get a 150 dollar ticket and my fiancé's insurance agrees to cover the damages to the other vehicle but says because I was driving and had driven her car more than twice, they wouldn't cover anything as far as the damages to her car which is likely but not certain to be totaled. She still owes 18k on this car. So she's either forced to file bankruptcy or pay 500 a month for several years on a car she cannot use.

Before we make that call I wanted to ask around and make sure the insurance company wouldn't be screwing us. She has full coverage through Jupiter Insurance in the city of Tulsa and state of Oklahoma. We don't have any information on the terms and conditions of said insurance - it isn't included in any of the paperwork they gave her. We can probably eventually get said information but it might be awhile and we might not know how to interpret all of it. So I thought I'd ask around.

Any other advice anyone has for this situation would be appreciated, we are both new to this. If any additional information is needed, feel free to ask.

    Thanks.

    Tricare Exempt from ACA?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 02:51 PM PST

Long story short, I was informed today by Tricare that they are exempt from the legislation of the Affordable Care Act, and therefore things that would be mandatory to cover with a $0 copay under the ACA are not necessarily the case.

Could someone explain or elaborate as to why this is the case? As far as I was aware, the main exemption was religious employers. I'm a little annoyed with the irony of a government entity being exempt from government legislation, but none too surprised at the same time.

    Thanks!

New insurance doesn't have all my accident history

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 02:26 PM PST

I found an insurance provider online who shops around for the best rates. After giving them for my driver's license I received a quote and even purchased a policy for $80 less than my current policy with a different company. I had three accidents within a 6-month period a few years ago, but the new company only had knowledge of 1 out of the 3. How long does it take for new insurance company to figure out that I really have three accidents instead of one? Is this a gamble that people usually do?

In a not at fault wreck with no insurance. Can I still get paid for my totaled car.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 04:24 AM PST

I currently live in Arkansas where you are legally required to have liability insurance on any car you drive. As the title says, I was in a wreck where I was not at fault and the police report reflects this. The first thing the woman did was tell the officer that she was at fault, so I'm not worried about that. However, I am hoping that without insurance on the car, I can still get paid by her insurance company, seeing as how my car was totaled. I was also give a ticket for not having proof of insurance, which I think was the cops way of hooking me up and not arresting me based on what I've been told. So basically, can I get a payout for my totaled car and will it backfire on me legally in court?

Girlfriends insurance directory is stupidly out of date

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:59 PM PST

Hi, My girlfriend has insurance through her school, and has been looking for a psuchologist to see. She looked at her insurance's directory of doctors, which gives her a decent list. However, it seems like every number she calls is either disconnected, the person doesn't work there, or not a doctor, or no longer takes her insurance. We tried calling her insurance, but they just said 'we use the same database as you here is another name on the same list' which leads to another false start. The last time we called they gave us a working number, but the doctor wasn't in network.

How do we cut through the bullshit and get a doctor?

    Splitting cars

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 09:11 AM PST

Is it ok to have two different insurance companies for separate vehicles? I have 4 cars and after doing several quotes it comes out significantly cheaper to have two cars on one policy and my son and the other two cars on a separate policy with a different company (esurance for him and geico for me)

Why is my car insurance so high? f/27, licensed for 10 years, no incidents/accidents, drive a Prius

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 11:59 AM PST

I'm beyond frustrated right now because I've been paying $160 a month for Mercury insurance. I recently spoke to my agent and he claims there's nothing I can really do to lower my policy/payments each month. I'm struggling after graduating college and I just hate paying this much every month. What can I do?

I even have a co worker who is only 23, drives a 2013 Honda Civic and is only paying like $85 a month. I don't have commuting milage or anything on my policy. I tried different quotes from like AAA and it would still be about the same a month for me.

What am I doing wrong?? I can't afford this anymore on top of my car payment of $288 a month.

Coverage for vehicular damage while housed at a repair facility [Clarifying older post]

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 10:29 AM PST

A repair facility bent a perfectly good critical part (crank) that had nothing to do with the mechanical breakdown they were supposed to be repairing. I understand no part of the original mechanical failure is covered, but wouldn't the damage they did be covered by comprehensive insurance? My online policy says it "Pays to repair or replace your motorcycle if it's stolen or damaged." There doesn't seem to be any exclusion that indicates this is not covered. The shop says the bent crank is going to necessitate at least $2000 in repair, is not willing to take responsibility, and may not have the resources to cover it even if they wanted to. Wouldn't repair necessitated by the damage they did, totally separate from the original cause of breakdown, be covered by comprehensive, just as damage from a motorcycle mysteriously tipping over or being vandalized is covered?

[My earlier post was construed by some as mechanical breakdown, which this is not, so I am rephrasing my question. I am sorry if this seems bad etiquette. I am trying to avoid the hassle of small claims court, which one cannot be sure of winning even if they are in the right, and avoiding such hassles is part of the reason I maintain comprehensive insurance.]

    Rerate or car insurance switch?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 10:10 AM PST

Hi! I have a question regarding my auto insurance (in Ohio, USA)

I am currently with State Farm and my bill to renew next month is $690 for six months. The auto insurance includes $25,000/50,000 body injury, $25,000 property, $5,000 medical, and $250 deductibles. The car is a 2018 Kia Soul so they said they cannot give me a discount based on safe car since the research has not been completed. Also, I am currently 24, but when I turn 25 I won't be counted as a youth driver anymore and I should see a total of 15% discount. Keep in mind, with all available discounts, they say I have 10% right now. I won't be saving a much considerable amount of money.

The agent recommended me raising my deductible to $1,000 to save money but that's not something I would like to do.

I did an auto quote with GEICO, and I was quoted $355 for a six month premium with higher coverage for body injury ($100,000/$300,000) same with property ($100,000) and same deductible.

I've been with State Farm for 8 years, technically through my parents.

Any advice on why GEICO would be so cheap? I am able to do a rerate for State Farm using my credit score which is 788. It was 784 when I was given my first auto quote. I'm not sure if that is a significant enough raise to affect my premiums

Should I go thru with the rerate? Or possibly switch to GEICO?

    Thanks everyone!

Question about driving someone else's car

Thanks for any help in advance. I recently got my g2 (Ontario, Canada) and my boyfriend will let me borrow his car from time to time. We don't live together so my understanding is that I don't need to be added to his insurance as his car is insured. Just want to double check this information.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 08:26 AM PST

So I got a quote online from geico and then I didn't actually purchase it, then I got a call from an agent and they asked me to confirm all the info I put in and the quote came out to like 60 more a month than the Geico website. If I were to purchase the Geico quote online would they raise the price later or was the guy who called me just messing with me? I answered all his question exactly the same as they were on the website

    Potential Body Shop horror story

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 07:53 AM PST

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this car and it breaks my heart to see it like this.

Any advice on how to proceed to make sure I don't get screwed? I appreciate any assistance, you all are amazing!

I just picked up my 2017 Nissan Maxima yesterday.

I am nervous about the body shop I picked. They have extremely high Google rankings for quality, came highly recommend, are used by local Lexus and other higher end dealerships.

My car had the following issues:

-Roof is leaking (all glass roof/sunroof)

-Drivers Window is making popping noise (only one I checked)

-Check engine light came on after 3 miles (5 miles since dropping car off, maybe 10 miles since accident 2 months ago)

-Gaps on hood and trunk are not even right to left.

-Trunk liner isn't installed correctly and is popping.

-I swear it sounds louder on inside, but this could be my imagination. My rental car was 2018 Impala and it may have been less growly and quieter.

I was rear-ended by someone doing 10-20mph I think, and it was hard enough to push me into the car in front causing over $9k in both rear and front damage.

I called insurance company who said I have to file a warranty claim with body shop because they were not a preffered repair shop. And to call back if they didn't seem helpful.

If there is additional damage that was not noticed before, will this get reopened and taken care of?

The body shop said they will put me in a rental and I am going to drop it off this afternoon. I was just hoping to know all my rights here. I just really don't want to get hosed.

    Thanks everyone!

Edit: fixed formatting, on mobile & I apologize for any errors

    Moving (Car Insurance)

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 07:35 AM PST

My mom and I are on the same policy for our two vehicles in Virginia. I just moved to North Carolina and need to transfer my policy to North Carolina, but have hers remain in Virginia. Is there any way to stay on the same policy in different states (I can't imagine so?)? Do I remove my vehicle from the policy and open a new policy by myself registered in North Carolina? Will the price increase significantly?

Do companies require phone records for stolen car claims?

    Remove from insurance

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:26 AM PST

My sister is moving out (not for college) but may use the family car sometimes but sparingly. She is going to be using the bus as her main transportation but will be getting a car in the near future. Is my father able to remove her as a driver on his insurance policy and just have her as a permissible driver (I think that is the terminology)? Thank you!
