If you're new here, read this post first!

    Posted: 10 Aug 2016 01:11 AM PDT

First, welcome to /r/stocks and congratulations on taking steps to better your financial future.

Before you make a post asking for advice or basic information, please consider these suggestions:

    1. Take a look through our wiki as a ton of info (or links leading to info) that people normally ask for can already be found there. This includes everything from the basics of what a stock is and how to buy stocks online to how to analyze a company as a potential investment.

    2. Join our chat room where basic questions can be answered instantly without the need to make a new post and wait for responses. With 70 users on during peak times, there is probably someone around to help you, though this is more likely during trading hours (9:30am - 4pm EDT).

    3. Use the search function as many questions you have were probably asked in the past.

After doing the above, we understand you may still have questions and will want help with your personal situation rather than simply reading about other people's situations. However, lately we've been receiving numerous low-quality posts along the lines of: "Hi. I'm new to stocks. How do I start?" Please note these types of posts may now be deleted without warning. With the very large and obvious links all around the subreddit directing users to the wiki, there is no reason anyone should be making these types of posts.

If you wish to make a post asking for guidance through the market/investing/stocks, please add detail about your current financial situation and the specific topics you need assistance with. Some questions that should be considered are: how old are you?, what is your income?, are you in debt?, what is your risk tolerance?, how many years of experience (or not) do you have?, how much capital will you be starting with?, do you have money in savings?, what topics have you read about and what do you still not understand?, are there any companies in particular you wish to invest in?, what kind of learning material are you interested in (e.g. books, articles, videos, websites)?, are you trying to generate an income from the market or just plan for retirement?, etc.

Generic posts do not give anyone insight into your personal situation and thus no meaningful advice can be given to you. As such, these posts will be deleted as they are of low quality and do not contribute to the subreddit.

tl;dr: If you would like people to put time into providing thorough advice for you, you need to put time into providing a thorough insight into your current situation. Generic, bare-bones, and low-effort posts will be removed.

You should also consider flairing your post as "Advice Request" or "Question" once posted so that it stands out to other users. Normally I flair all posts on my own when I can, but you can expedite the process by flairing your own post to make it more noticeable.

Any way to get alerts when stocks are "trending"

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 07:30 AM PST

I see in the Benzinga morning email every day that they "alerted" their Pro users to stocks with surging volume. It seems to me like there should be tons of websites able to basically push a notification to you when a stock that has been steady at a certain price and volume is starting to ramp up and give you time to get in before it tops out.

Anyone aware of something like this, and why doesn't it work?

10 IPOs to look out for in 2018

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 05:28 PM PST

Now these are just 10 that I think will be pretty big. There are going to be others that will go public in 2018 (I saw that Aston Martin is planning to go public soon at a similar valuation to Ferrari - Ticket $RACE) and some may not go public this year, but may get delayed to 2019, or 2020... or may never go public. Please add any companies you are watching to go public in 2018 in the comments so we can look into them as well. If you want to watch the video where I go more in depth on each pick, here it is: https://youtu.be/zJQagRBjDCk

    • 1: Spotify - Spotify is a company that has a dominance in the music streaming space, and competes with companies like Pandora, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Google Music, but has still managed to be the #1 choice for consumers. in 2018, we will most likely see this company go public. I can see them being the Netflix of music - and eventually become their own label (like original content)

    • 2: Uber - Popular ride sharing app that is used around the world and most people know about the company and use it regularly as well. Strong rumours that this will indeed go public in 2018, but this was also rumoured in 2017. They are valued at somewhere between 60-70B.

    • 3: Lyft - Competitor to Uber and also a ridesharing app. Not as big as uber around the world however the most enticing part of this company is that they have Alphabet is an investor (I believe a 1B investment from Alphabet). They are valued at somewhere between 10-15B.

    • 4: Avaya - Hardware company, transforming to a software and services company. They are big in the UC space, and Contact Center space as well. Main competitors are Cisco and Mitel in the same space. Recently came out of Chapter 11, and not quite sure on their valuation when they will go public.

    • 5: Xiaomi - This is a chinese company who primarily makes smartphones and related electronics (power banks, accessories, etc.). They are making waves in China and is a good competitor to Huawei in China. If they go public in 2018, they will come in at around a 50B valuation.

    • 6: Airbnb - This is a popular app for travelers. It allows you to rent out your house or room to earn a bit more income whenever you are on vacation, or if you have extra space in your house being unused. The prices are typically cheaper than hotels and I personally used it, for example for cottage rentals with friends, or when we traveled to Japan. Airbnb is great when you can't find a Hotel in a rural area, or if you want to stay in the heart of the city for cheaper than a hotel (typically). They are currently valued at 30-40B.

    • 7: Dropbox - They allow you to upload and share files with others online. They are essentially cloud storage, and was one of the first ones to do this before others got in the game (Apple, Google, etc.). Think of it as a hard drive that is hosted by Dropbox, and you can upload and download files from there at any time, share the files with friends, etc. Dropbox is currently valued at 10B in 2014, not sure where it's at now, but if I had to guess, I'd say 15-20B.

    • 8: Ancestry.com - Allows you to see your family tree. I've never used it personally, but they claim to have over 7B records from US, Canada, Europe. They offer a free trial if you're curious about family roots, so could check it out and see if you want to subscribe to their service (I personally would never...). Currently valued at around 3B.

    • 9: Zscaler - Cloud and security company that provides firewalls, antivirus, SSL, and anything required in keeping a secure connection. They are big in the enterprise space and have a good presence in the industry for security. Currently only valued at 1B which may be a pretty good deal for a company that provides good value.

    • 10: Pinterest - They are essentially a Social network. It's idea is for images and to save images to view later. For example, my wife used it before the wedding and would add different hairstyle ideas in there. She could go on google images and when she sees one she likes, there's a button to add to Pinterest. Then you have all of these pictures in 1 spot later to compare and view. The company is currently valued at around 12-13B.

Share what companies you are watching to go public in 2018, and let us know if you plan to invest in any of these 10 if they do go public this year. Don't forget to Invest Positively and Happy Investing!

Why did BKB'B decline for an entire year and why is it now an ultra performer?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 10:24 AM PST

I noticed if you owned stock in 2015 ($BRK'B) you would have had to wait 2 full years JUST to break even. That must have tested a lot of people. Seems crazy compared to the lifestyle we are currently living. Why did BKB'B go from something worse than a 1 year CD to an ultra-performer?

ELI5: why isn't IBM share price benefiting from blockchain mania?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 11:32 AM PST

IBM holder here. The stock price has been flattish over the last year, as hype has exploded around blockchain and the related new currencies.

Shouldn't IBM's price be rising given IBM's substantial involvement in blockchain? What am I missing? (I'm no expert on the new currencies or blockchain or IBM... just a layman... so simple answers appreciated)

    TWTR.. Poised for a breakout?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 07:53 AM PST

I've been watching TWTR for the last few weeks and I just keep having this feeling in my gut that I should buy it even though the fundamentals and analysts are bearish, I just can't shake this nagging feeling that it is on the cusp of turning the corner and breaking out.

I mean TWTR is a social media household name brand that is EVERYWHERE, 300 million users.. Everyone uses it from the President, to celebs, to news networks. EVERYONE. I mean can you remember the last time you went a day without seeing some kind of story because of a tweet?

Sure the company still hasn't quite figured it out yet in terms of making this a profitable and successful company, but with the huge brand awareness of Twitter and 300 million plus users, isn't it only a matter of time until they do?

Also worth noting it's up today on a down day for the market while all the other tech and social media stocks are down, TWTR is up.

Opinions on locking in my gains.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:59 PM PST

I purchased TGT last May with the intention of holding it long term for dividends. Since then I've established 25% gains and would like to lock in some of that before any pullback, but doing so before may would be taxed as short term. Sell and get taxed or risk a correction?

    Thoughts on $HABT

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 09:11 AM PST

As a new investor, I've been looking for stocks that seem to have some upside. $HABT burger seems to have dropped off quite a bit last year, mostly because of a miss in earnings projectiins for Q3. Despite that, they are expanding quickly, have very little debt, and offer some of the cheapest yet quality foods on the market. The downsides are that the chain is facing heavy competition from alternative burger spots (ie ShakeShack) and will need a lot of capital to open up new locations on the East Coast.

For $9 a share, what are your guys' thoughts on investing?

    Looking at 5G Companies

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 04:25 AM PST

Just through my daily reading, I've started seeing more articles about 5G and I was wondering if you guys were invested in any companies that have are in the space. It seems like there could be some good companies to invest in, but I was wondering if anyone had some more knowledge. I have seen Nokia, Huawei, and Ericsson as some of the major manufacturers of the equipment.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 11:18 AM PST

Currently has a great margin of safety, as well as pretty solid financials. Consistent cash flow rate growth, EPS growth, revenue growth. As well as a great revenue per employee number.

Blockchain Global and KODAKCoin (x-post from /r/pennystocks)

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 11:49 AM PST

Global Blockchain is Lead Investor in KODAKCOIN

I had been checking up on this stock frequently and I always thought that it was low. Global Blockchain (OTC:BLKCF) is a blockchain and Crypto mining company that is now the lead investor in KODAKCoin with a $2M investment and an 8M KODAKCoin allotment. This means that they bought up all of KODAKCoin's pre-ICO.

    Shares are up ~47%.

Subscribed to MoviePass last month and now I'm long HMNY.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 07:44 AM PST

    • MoviePass just hit 1.5 million subscribers over the last year. For context, Netflix took 3 years to reach 1 million subscribers.
    • Personally subscribed and I'm loving the service. Access to the majority of theaters and simple to use.
    • Although the company is currently losing money, HMNY is using the data to sell to Uber, restaurants, and hollywood studios.

What online broker service allows for the earliest premarket trading hours?

All I know is that a certain app whose name I cannot say in this subreddit (rhymes with slobinhood) allows gold members to trade at 9AM EST. Is there a broker out there who allows for trading at earlier hours? I would love to start trading at 4AM if possible.

What does everyone think about this stock? Is it worth a short? Massive , Taking on two massive projects that are going to tie up their capital for the next 3 - 5 years, Razor thin margins in a failing industry and a giant race to the bottom for contracts that TFL are bidding for.
