Bullish on Video Games / eSports? Tencent owns Riot Games, 84% of Supercell and 25 % of Activision Blizzard.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:10 AM PST

Bullish on electric cars / automated driving? Tencent owns 5% of Tesla and a $1.6 billion stake in the Chinese up-start, NIO.

Bullish on e-Commerce / ePayment solutions / in-app payment? Tencent owns 20% of JD.com and a stake in Vipshop. They, of course, operate WeChat, QQZone and QQ - combined these have MAU of 980 million. Within each of these, they have finance solutions, the biggest being WeChat Pay - part of which is contributing to the 143% Year on Year revenue growth for their other business department (featuring their payment business and Cloud business).

Did you say you like The Cloud? Don't tell me that you like AI technology, too?

Tencent owns two AI startup labs. They also run Tencent Cloud - a cloud services provider that has access to the best advertisement machine in China: Tencent's (aforementioned) social media portfolio.

Now, I know what you're thinking right now:

"Who is this guy, u/snight, with all of these circumstantial and qualitative comments? This isn't fundamental analysis; this is bullshit!"

Well, to those of you who like to invest on more than just trends, let me posit this:

Apart from their massive moat, a wealth of investments and insane social media portfolio. (Oh, they also have 43 million subscribers to Tencent video and a growing investment into revenue based literature and music platforms). They also achieved 61% YoY quarterly revenue growth and 45% net profit growth. They have a P/E of only 60, and a forward P/E of 40. They also have USD 13 billion in cash. Ma Huateng - or, as I like to call him, the one true Ma - has silently, steadily and overwhelmingly built up an empire of investments upon layers upon layers of IP with access to one of the biggest user base in the world.

My last comment is food for thought, and to me, it summarises the entire philosophy of Tencent. You may know that WeChat is a social media platform, I haven't fully fleshed out how you can walk into a store, and (through WeChat) the automated payment technology can register what you pick up and charge it straight to your phone without you needing to talk to anyone or scan anything. What I haven't yet mentioned is Tencent's apps within apps. Tencent offers an in-app "app store", and they now offer more apps or "mini-apps" than Apple's AppStore..

Disclaimer: I am long Tencent CBBC's (Zero End Calls)

Apologies for the fractured nature of this post, it is late, I just wanted to share my thoughts with you all.

    3 Stocks to Watch/Buy in Feb 2018

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:10 AM PST

Here's my monthly post on 3 positions I'm looking to buy/add in Feb. I already have positions in all 3 of these, and currently TTWO is looking great to add more to. Let me know what your picks for Feb are and as usual, if you prefer this in video format, you can find it here

    • 1) TTWO - Take-two Interactive One of the largest gaming companies in the world. They have popular games like Grand Theft Auto and the 2K Sports Series (like NBA 2K). Their main competitors are ATVI, EA, and somewhat Tencent (League of Legends). TTWO will be reporting earnings on Feb 7th after hours, and analysts are expecting a consensus EPS for this quarter at $0.84. The same quarter last year came in at an EPS of $0.71, so this would be substantial growth. They have also beat the past 4 ERs and I don't expect this to be any different as we just had the holiday season, and that is typically good for gaming companies as a lot of people buy games as gifts, etc. The technicals here is what really caught my attention. It's currently stuck in a range which I believe will be broken either with an earnings run up, or after they report their earnings.

    • 2) ADSK - Autodesk Inc. They are a software company that makes tools for engineers and architects for CAD modelling design. They don't really have any large competitors as far as I can tell. Adobe could be considered one, but Adobe focuses more on design tools for web designers, artists, etc. so I don't see them as a direct competitor. I believe Autodesk has a good niche here and they will keep growing here. Their earnings are expected Feb 27th (not confirmed) and analysts have a high target for this (most are $120+). They are pushing a subscription model - The subscription revenues soared 105.6% year over year to $231.1 million in last quarter and total subscriptions increased 146K from prior quarter to 3.6M in the quarter. For this earnings, they expect revenues in the range of $537–$547 million. They revised their full-year revenue and EPS expectations and increased to $2.040-$2.050 billion vs prior guidance of $2.030–$2.040 billion. Projects subscription additions to be between 625K and 650K compared with the prior guidance of 625K and 675K. Their technicals again caught my attention - that gap! They dropped on their last earnings and have been flat since then, but I think we will make a run before the next earnings to attempt to fill out this gap. This is more of a technical play here than a fundamental so be warned that you may be holding this longer than expected for this to play out.

    • 3) SQ - Square Inc. Square is a mobile payment company and are popular with small businesses as their tool allows them to use their phone/iPad as a payment device. Customers can then pay via CC (Mastercard, Visa, Amex, etc.) using this device which opens up the door to more customers (previously only cash or debit). Square not only sells the device, but also takes a pay cut from each transaction. Their earnings are expected on Feb 21 (not confirmed) and analysts haven't really had many upgrades on the stock since it hit $50 and dropped back down so I feel we will see a lot of upgrades come in as we approach earnings and/or once they report earnings. The technicals show that since that drop back in late November, the stock has been consolidating (healthy) and recently there has been some good news and rumours surrounding the stock (like American Express AXP interested in buying them) which has refueled it in a sense and has sent it back in a rally on good volume.

So these are my 3 picks for February. There are plenty of companies reporting earnings so keep your eyes peeled. Let us know what positions you are adding/holding through February and how you did in January with your positions in the comments below! Happy Investing!

The Dow was up 170+ this morning. Now it's red. What's happening?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 10:09 AM PST

Seems like something's up but I can't seem to find out what just yet. Please don't say "Stocks go up, stocks go down... can't explain that." This is slightly bigger than your average dip. I'm just curious, not fearmongering.

    PETS getting blasted today

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 09:51 AM PST

Analyst came out with scathing business review. Seems a lot like Left's attack on SHOP. I'm going to let in settle through tomorrow then get in. This could provide some great return over the next few months, I think it's a solid business and could be a potential acquisition by someone like Amazon or Chewy down the road.

    Dropping US Airlines stocks

Seeing that most several American airlines' stocks went down quite a bit today, mainly because United Airlines will offer more and cheaper flights. Would it be a good time to buy US airline stocks now? American Airlines (AAL) -7.54%, Delta Air Lines (DAL) -6.87%, Southwest Airlines (LUV) -4.58% & United Continental Holdings (UAL) -11.83%

    Help to understand BPMX

Im trying to understand the hype behind BiopharmX. When you look at their finances. Just taking a quick glance at their income statement you can see they have had a negative gross profit and a negative gross income year over year since 2013. 1) How does a company operate continuously making no money. 2) What makes this stock so appealing to people.

How to Make Money During Earnings Season

    Posted: 23 Jan 2018 05:52 PM PST

Everyone always talks about whether or not to go long/short before the earnings announcement. Everyone is always thinking about opening a position before the announcement, and I am not here to say this is a bad strategy or a wrong one. I just wanted to talk about a less mentioned strategy that I feel is more reliable than opening positions to "bet" on earnings.

Just wait. Sit on your hands and wait. Wait until earnings are released, and watch Wall Street go crazy over the news. Be reactive to earnings, not anticipatory. In a bull market like we have been in for the last month or so, going short is probably ill advised just due to so many stocks rocketing up and few actually going down a meaningful amount. BUT there are still traders that are overreacting to "bad earnings" or some form of earnings disappointment and selling off stocks. And it's not that the lowering of the price is unwarranted per se, it's that it is over-exaggerated.

If there is one thing I've learned from trading in the market, it's that people overreact, all the time. Panic sparks panic and the weak traders that don't even consider market psychology and their own psychology fall prey to so many different psychological processes that they may not even be aware of. And because of this companies are often oversold due to news events, analyst predictions, and biggest of all, earnings releases.

So the way that I personally like to trade and make my profits around earnings are to watch all the large caps, and some mid caps and how the stocks react after earnings, and if I feel they have been oversold, I will go long when a bottom or support is forming and when the price action has begun to reverse. I'm not always right (still always have stop losses) but I typically find it fairly easy to do well around earnings because humans do tend to fall prey to fear and sell stocks that should not be sold. So by doing the opposite of the market there is a lot of potential profit to be made.

The only point to this post really is to get some people thinking critically about earnings releases and the price action that proceeds them, and instead of only thinking of buying or selling before earnings, start thinking about buying or selling after earnings to take advantage of the downfalls in our own natural psychology and biases.

Earnings season has only just begun, but to give you an idea of places to start, GS is the perfect example of quick easy money after earnings. I sold a credit spread on the 17th and closed for 95% of the credit profit on the 22nd. IBM has also panned out well but I haven't quite closed that one yet. Looking forward, I'm keeping an eye out on PG and JNJ today, as well as already having opened a position in AXP.

Hope this gives you something to think about, and I'm sure you'll be able to find many opportunities that I didn't list and that I may not even be aware of. Good luck!

    Mentally dealing with investments

How do you all deal with the mental aspect of investing? For me, I have a hard time for about a month post buying a stock. It keeps me up at night, so I decided to stop buying new stocks, but now I have a cash pile that I feel should be put to use. I just don't know how to convince myself to take the risk, even when I see great growth opportunities out there. Scares the crap outta me.

Having a lot of small holdings: how to keep reorganization fees under control

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 01:36 PM PST

I am planning to have many small stock holdings. By small, I don't mean penny stocks. More like small cap. Many of them could be in the $1 - $5 range per share. Sometimes I might be holding a smallish number of shares. I want to be reasonably smart about the reorganization fees that I could get hit with.

How can I reasonably predict frequency of reorganizations? Are there certain industries, biotech for example, that have reorganizations more commonly/ frequently?

Is there a reasonably non-invasive way for me to alert myself of coming reorganizations, so that I can consider selling the stock before that happens?

US vs China EV battery boom.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 01:25 PM PST

I've been exploring US, Chinese, and Canadian mining companies lately in anticipation of increased demand for rare earth metals Lithium and Cobalt. A few of these companies have really popped off over the past 2 months some surging 30%-40% in the last two weeks based simply on companies buying up new prospects. Some of these guys haven't even touched their shovels to the ground and they are rocketing up. I was about to make a trade on one (BKTPF) today but then I started thinking, can these US and Canadian corporations even compete with the Chinese giants? I dove deeper into it and read about companies like Moly Corp that tried to compete with these big fish and ended up declaring bankruptcy. Even with Trump's mineral initiatives and tax cuts it still seems like these domestic firms are positioning themselves for a tough fight. Do you think they can compete or are we going to see a price correction with these CA and US lithium/cobalt firms?

My parents gave each of my siblings a percentage of their stocks in a Charles Schwab acount and i really dont know what to do with them other than just let them sit. I will attach a picture of the different stocks and the amount owned. Any advice would be appreciated. https://imgur.com/M6FPgtw
