When do you order your stock?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 11:51 AM PST

Just curious, say if you are planning on buying a stock (let's say is AAPL), after you do all your basic homework on the background etc.

Do you monitor their price within the day(or the week) before buying it, to try to snatch a good price?

Or do you just market order it straight away as soon as you next login to your trading account?

Just curious on how people here execute the trade.

What happened to my BAS stock?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 08:39 AM PST

I bought 16 shares of BAS back in 2015. I don't pay a lot of attention to the stocks that I buy since I plan on keeping them for many years but this one sort of disappeared from my stock list. I see that it's still trading, but I no longer have any shares of it. 12/27/16 my statement shows that there was a merger and I received $1.01 for my 16 shares and it shows a $39.87 loss. What exactly happened?

Last night HMNY mentioned that Moviepass is on course to run at break even within 60 days. Anyone believe em?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:18 PM PST

This got my attention, at 7 mins 40.

    https://finance.yahoo.com/video/moviepass-tops-1-5m-subscribers-222654906.html

Break even while on course to hit 3 million subs in a year? Dollar Shave Club took 6 years to hit 3 million. And Unilever coughed up a billion for those subs.

It's just that.. HMNY haven't laid out any details other than 'we've signed some deals'.

    How's your bullshit detector?

Good place to find organized news?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 06:05 AM PST

    Hey guys! How are you?

I would love to know where you get your news from. I am a forex trader and I trade only during important news and when there is high momentum (they tend to be correlated). I use an economic calendar that organizes all news in order of how important they are for certain currency with time and date. Is there something similar for the stock market? If I want to follow certain tickers, is there a website telling me when the next announcements are?

    Thanks a lot

Best Metal Miners to Bet On Electric Cars?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 06:48 AM PST

Recently I have been interested in getting some exposure to mining companies whose metals are used in electric car batteries, because they are gaining a lot of traction in the world. I know lithium has been the dominant metal to invest in historically, but I am seeing a lot more news about the importance of Nickel, Cobalt and Manganese. Anyone know of good mining companies to bet on in any of these metals?

18.91% Dividend yield. What do you guys think?

100 shares at 17.00. The dividends alone will cover between 18-19% returns, while 2018 seems promising to have a 10% gain.

    This is for long term.

EILI5: Sold my cost basis, broker shows that I have "short term gains" from selling. Why?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:52 AM PST

EDIT: I got my answer and I get it now. Thanks!

9 months ago, I put 4k into Canadian weed stocks. I decided to pull out my cost basis just to be safe. I assumed since I'm selling 4k worth of stocks, I'd be pulling my cost basis out and not get short term gains. My plan was to wait another 3 months until the 1 year mark, then sell more of my holdings so I get long term gains taxes. My broker's website shows that I only sold $800 worth of my cost basis and the remaining, $3200 was short term capital gains, so I'll be taxed heavily. What did I do wrong? I thought I was pulling out my cost basis from the market and that should have been a non-taxable event.

What do we think of FSLR?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 02:12 PM PST

After a great 2017, it shoot up 9.5% today. What do we think?

I'm sure short term it will be plenty volatile - but does anyone believe this would be a good long-term hold? I know they've been really high before and crashed hard, but considering getting in now. Or maybe I'll just jump into the TAN ETF.

    Gonna do some research tonight.

    Simple stock questions

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:50 AM PST

    First about me

I buy long term minimum of one year, prefer 5. However I believe a stock market crash is going to happen in the next year or so. So obviously I would like to protect gains. I am by no means trying to time the market I am just trying to semi control the cash flow.

    Questions

1 - do you use a stop limit and if so why? 2 - how do you buy stocks? Market price, limit, etc 3 - for those who have lived through and invested through down times what is your advice.

    Investment ideas for 2018

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 01:17 PM PST

I'm looking around the market and can't really determine what my next bet should be for 20-18. I recently bought into GE and have had success with that, and I am about to sell an automation ETF called ROBO. This sale combined with some new capital is what I want to use to buy something else.

What trends or sectors are you liking going into 2018? Any symbols worth checking out with potential?

I will do all of my own due diligence, but if you would also like to give a brief reason on your pick that would be appreciated!

Entry points during this raging bull market?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:32 AM PST

Obviously I like to time my entry and buy on a dip, but with the ATH's of the stocks I'm looking at, I'm stumped on when to get in. Wanting to hop on the $GOOG, $SQ, $HD, and $MSFT train, do I just do a market order and let it ride? These would be long term (10+ yr holds)

Now that CES is pretty much over, what trade conventions are "keenly" watched in the stock market? I saw a website that had the top 100 trade shows, but many of them seemed kind of for "knick-knack" items (except for a few).

If not much else, what do you guys watch for in terms of new companies/ideas? Thanks fellow traders and investors!

    bank-affiliated brokerage firms: biased?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:24 AM PST

    hi everyone!

i'm new to investing and was looking at opening a Merrill Edge account. Bank of America customers like myself, with $25K+ in their accounts, get 30 trades a month with no trading fees if they open a Merrill Edge account.

Of course I'm thinking this is a great deal, so I ring up my parents to ask for their input. They advised against opening an account at any brokerage firm with bank affiliations, such as Merrill Edge and Ally. They told me that these companies will prioritize funds that benefit the bank they're associated with, and will not sell funds from competitors like Wells Fargo.

Before I make a decision, I wanted to ask the /r/stocks community what they think. Is it true that bank-affiliated brokerage firms heavily biased? If so, should I just open an account with something like ETrade?

    Thank you!

    Should I sell $TGT (Target)

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:43 PM PST

    Here's the gist:

I've been in TGT for a few months now. Bought it as a value play when everyone thought Amazon was going to take over the world the next day. (Amazon's done quite well but y'all know what I mean).

Got in at $53 and now I'm up about 33%. I believe that it's been pumped because of the combination of the Amazon acquisition rumors and the note saying that holiday sales were strong.

I'm most likely going to sell before earnings are reposted...

My reasoning: if TGT doesn't beat sales expectations AND offer strong guidance the stock will sell off. Remember, it got up to these levels based on news. My experience tells me to sell the news.

What are your thoughts? Hope that this conversation helps other as well.
