[Update] NY landlords complaining about heat

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 05:48 AM PST

    Original : https://reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/7oz9op/ny_landlords_complaining_about_heat/

My landlords came in without any notice while I was at work, again, and the heat was at 50. Usually they text me after the fact but they didn't this time.

When I get home he was waiting for me outside with a list of things :

    1) he said I am the cause of the pipe freeze because the heat in my apartment, at 65 degrees, routed the heat out of the first floor and caused the pipes to freeze on the other side of the house. I brought up the law and he didn't care 2) because of my utility usage, my rent is now increased by 150$ a month permanently 3) he gave me a box of cleaning products because I need to "try to be a cleaner tenant " ( for what it's worth I clean every weekend, but they keep coming in when I haven't cleaned up in a day or so)

So this has gone from "maybe they just don't understand the law " to these people are not only stupid but pretty crazy and I need to move out.

I'm in a month to month lease and need to give thirty days notice. Additionally I already paid last month rent. Is my only recourse to stick it out until the end of February?

[CO] Tenant bills in my Handyman's name

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 05:40 AM PST

    UPDATE

    Thank you all!

I took the Dad (both son and dad laid carpet)to police station and we made a report. Cop wanted to go talk to the renters, but my hearing for eviction is tomorrow (couldn't get ahold of my lawyer) and I didn't want to somehow screw that up (Will go after court). Cop this time was very helpful and advised me to call them anytime I suspected a drug deal was going on and they would be delighted to come by.

I tracked down the other name on the bills and gave her a heads up. Imagine someone calling you out of the blue w this news. She was conflicted about what to believe.

Tenants lawyer threw out an offer to give me some money but at this point I'm not sure WHOs money they would give me.

I will contact the Postal Service today.

    Thanks again!

Original Post: I'm in the process of evicting these folks for non-payment.

Had the plumber in to replace bathroom fixture and I'm hanging out by the front door where the mail is. So I rifle through it. NONE of the bills are in tenant names. I recognize the cable bill name is the guy I had install carpet a few months ago.

I call carpet guy who tells me ALL of his credit cards where stolen by these people. He is afraid of them because they "have gun and knife". He is from another country and apprehensive about police. His english isn't great. I feel awful this happened to him and he didn't tell me.

Tenants clean houses and have apparently stolen many IDs. I don't know how to contact the people the other bills are under.

I plan on visiting the police today but I gotta say they've been indifferent to my other complaints about this scum (dealing heroin).

I took pictures of the mail, could I be in trouble for snooping? Could they steal MY ID? What can I do to help carpet guy who "can't spend money anymore"?

[FL] Constantly harassed by neighborhood kids.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 07:44 AM PST

I'm pretty fed up at the moment. And this may sound silly. But I'm being constantly harassed by the kids in my neighborhood. I live in a predominantly African American neighborhood and I am Caucasian myself. Since the day I moved in, the KIDS not the adults have been harassing me. I've been told I'll get stabbed, that they'll beat my ass, so on and so forth. I can shrug that stuff off, no big deal. Then they started throwing baseball sized rocks at my house, sticks, you name it. They set my trash can on fire, and have stolen 2 chickens and countless eggs from my chicken coop. They urinate all over my work truck and my private vehicle, and have now taken my eggs, and egged my car this morning. I have a DVR and cloud backup video system on the way.

This is my dilemma. One, if they're stealing chickens and eggs, I can only imagine they're hungry. I'm saying that because I know where most of them live and they're not in the best households.

The reason they're always in front of my house is because it has one of the only streetlights and they usually play in the road right there. I get that.

Really, truthfully, I think it's because I'm white. I hate it, I really do. I'd love to move, but I can't shake my magic money tree and find a better place in town because of sudden onset bachelorhood, times are tight.

I called the police, they said that I need to start getting this stuff on video, but they could really care less. The neighbor across the street was beating the hell out of her sister to the point where the children were trying to pull them apart, the police finally showed up 2 hours later. That's the stuff I'm dealing with here.

Is there any options I have? The direction I'm leaning is get these kids on video doing this stuff and then going to their house in the evening, asking their momma's to intervene because the next step is me going to the police and asking to press charges, I keep to myself and am nice to everyone around, it's just these damn kids that are absolutely making my blood boil.

[LA] Coworker ate my jam, had allergic reaction, went to hospital. Threatened me bodily harm and legal action.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 02:43 PM PST

EDIT: Thank you to everyone for allaying my fears. I've written an email to ownership regarding the incident and my boss called me pretty much immediately to schedule a meeting tomorrow. I'm a pretty nervous person and definitely got too worked up about what I now see is a pretty frivilous matter. INB4 Joe is all "I was just joking around..." at our meeting....

throwaway here. on monday, a coworker of mine ("Joe") who has a severe peanut allergy decided he wanted some of my fancy schmancy smuckers strawberry jam on his toast. Well, I frequently use the same knife for the jam as I did for peanut butter - so there was enough peanut butter in the jam to give him a severe reaction, pretty much immediately from my understanding.

Joe went to the hospital and is fortunately not dead. He was out of work on Tuesday recovering and I did not even know anything had happened (I don't work Mondays) until this morning when he saw me in the warehouse. Joe pulled me aside and told me that if I "try to poison me again and I'll do a lot worse to you" with a schoolyard-like slit-throat gesture. He also said he was talking to a lawyer about bringing a case against me.

    Some relevant info:

    • Joe and I do not work directly together. I've spoken to him maybe a handful of times. He's in sales, I work in production/warehousing
    • we have a standing "if it's not yours don't touch it" policy in the fridge, backed up by emails from the owners about this.
    • the jar was clearly labeled with my initials on the lid.
    • if he had just asked me for some of the jam, I would have told him not to eat it. he sneered at me when I pointed this out and said "yeah right, you don't like me, I know it."

Does this guy have even a slight case? Should I report this to my bosses and just ignore it? I've only started at this company a month and a half ago and I don't want this to fuck things up.

Ex husband is psychologically tormenting our son. Can I have him pay for the therapy bills? VA

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:59 AM PST

My soon to be ex and I have 50/50 of our four boys. Our eldest is about to turn 17, so he was allowed to choose who to reside with day-to-day. He wanted to live with both of us, like his brothers, and my ex has absolutely hit the roof over it.

I initiated the divorce, so I am Public Enemy # 1 to him, and he told our son "if you're not with me, you're against me. If you pick Mom, we're done". He has followed through on this and gone NUCLEAR on our son. He's told his family, our younger sons, and everyone we know that our eldest isn't really his son, that he's the product of a (totally fictional) affair I had, and that my ex chose to raise him out of the goodness of his heart, but can no longer be around him after his "betrayal". Now his grandmother, aunts and uncles, cousins and a lot of our old family friends won't talk to him, and his grandmother has said that since he's "not really part of the family", he is required to repay the inheritance left for him by his grandfather (a modest college fund). My younger boys won't speak to either one of us, except to demand to live solely with their father.

My son says he doesn't want to live with "someone like that" anyway, but he is clearly devastated, and he and his dad got on really well before the split. His grades have tanked, his best friend has reached out to me to say how concerned he is, and last weekend he came home drunk and spent hours puking in the bathroom and crying and asking me why he isn't "good enough". I don't want to be the kind of parent who makes their almost-technically-an-adult kid do something, but obviously he needs to see a therapist. Since my ex is violating the orders to pay child support and keep me and our eldest on his insurance, I am absolutely flat broke with no way of paying for the help he desperately needs. Obviously I think my ex should be paying to help fix some of what he has broken.

I do have an attorney, but he was so unmoved by all of this that I'm kind of starting to doubt his opinion. I know he's right that the support and insurance will eventually get straightened out. But is he right that a judge wouldn't care about any of this, and wouldn't order my ex to pay for therapy? I know that "parental alienation" is a really high bar, but I feel like we have to be at least close to that with the younger boys, and he has gone on a massive, provable campaign to psychologically destroy our eldest. Should I be trying to get a different lawyer somehow? The one I have said that to a judge, this is all just "family drama". Is this not proof that my ex is a terrible parent? I feel like this should at least have some impact on the custody split for our three younger boys.

Any and all advice would be much appreciated.

Tl;dr: Ex husband is lashing out at our oldest son in punishment for asking to live with me half the time. Son is devastated and needs therapy, but my lawyer says a judge won't care about any of this and won't make my ex pay for therapy. True?

[WV] Employer mass sends paystubs in email of each department by mistake, threatens disciplinary action if we share or discuss.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:05 AM PST

    USA West Virginia

Last night they rolled out a new paystub feature by email everyone in each department and even cross departments received dozens hundreds of pay stubs of people along with ourselves. Now we received emails if we talk about it, share it, or dont delete it we will have disciplinary action taken against us.

This has our personal info, wages, child support type garnishments, our full routing number, the last 4 of our checking, our last 4 of social, home address.

Is there a reasonable expectation of privacy? On another unrelated matter we found out a new employee is making more money than people who have worked 10-15 years.

I want to remain as anonymous as possible because i think i can be fired for discussing this but will try to answer any questions.

Honestly don't know what to do, it was a mistake but threaten to fire us for taking about it is insane, this is also a government job. Any advice would be appreciated.

Edit: After looking again it is every employee, not just a few departments. Every employee got a full copy of everyones stub. From sheriffs deputies to highest levels of govt.

Rescinded job offer after discussing salary information

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 05:26 AM PST

So I've been informally interviewing with a new department in my huge Fortune 100 company for a couple of weeks. I've been speaking with the manager a couple of times a week, everything was looking good. I'm a contractor with this company and this would be a jump to a FTE. Yesterday, the manager asked to see me in his office. He said everything looked good and that they were looking to hire me on with a 24% raise, he later changed that to 33.5% without any negotiations from me.

I was excited. Very very excited. I told a coworker/friend who had also just received a job offer from his department (different from either of mine) and told him what I would be making. His offer was similar.

The manager asked to see me this morning and because I had broken the BGs (Business Guidelines) for disclosing my salary they might have to take the offer off the table.

How can I keep something like this to myself completely. I'm devastated right now and hoping by some miracle that I can still be hired on as it's the most amount of money I've ever made in my entire life and completely aligns with my career goals? :(

I never had any of this in writing unfortunately, but I do have witnesses to the interviews as well as another coworker who is offered the same position literally right after me (there were 2 openings).

What I'm most worried about is that I'm basically screwed being a FTE for the entire company now. I crossposted this to TIFU and they suggested that I post this here. I was suggested this link as well: http://n.pr/2CQ2JV6

Job/I am located in Georgia, HQ is located in CA.

Edit: They rescinded the offer. :,(

TL:DR Told a coworker about a new job opportunity and it got around and they may rescind the offer

My boss underpaid me 21% this week! (& not for the first time) Please help!

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:37 AM PST

I've been a salary based employee for the few years that I've been working in this company.

This past week I noticed that my check was short a hefty amount. I reached out to the payroll department who informed me that I no longer had vacation or personal time left so they deducted the money because I didn't work the full 80 hours (bi-weekly pay).

I mentioned as well as emailed the labor law regarding exempt employees; "An exempt employee generally must be paid the same amount for any week in which the employee performs any work, regardless of the number of days or hours worked" and explained that although there was a couple of days that I had to work shorter hours, I had not missed a single day of work (and still got my tasks done) in months.

The response I received was "I don't think you would qualify as an exempt employee. I don't think you meet all the criteria with your job description. All of our non-union employees who work part of the day and leave early must use either sick or vacation to cover the eight hour shift."

Note that I've always been paid as a salary employee, my job description is on the management side and I NEVER got paid for the overtime hours that I've put in over the years.

If you could kindly advise whether or not this money is legally owed to me and if so, how do you recommend I go about this?

TIA!! (And a happy new year to you :)

My company makes you pay a $5 fee to get back your lost & found items,

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 02:40 AM PST

Example, you left an item in a common area of the office. The manager (or another employee) of the office finds the item & places it in a LOCKED lost & found bin. Once you discover your item is in the bin, you are forced to pay a $5 fee to retrieve your lost or mislaid item. Is this in any way legal? I can't find an answer to this specific situation on google, and I don't believe this "technique" is right by any means.

Need to turn myself in, have questions [CT]

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 08:29 AM PST

I missed court and have to turn myself in. I was going to court for a drug possession charge and was going to an IOP program for it. I am also on methadone maintenance, and that creates a lot of questions for me. Ive seen people come into the methadone clinic in handcuffs escorted by police officers before, so i know they will bring people to get medicated, but under what circumstances I am not sure. Monday is MLK day so im guessing i will be sitting there until at least tuesday morning if i turn myself in on tomorrow.

The reason ive chosen tomorrow as the day is because that is the day myself and my family must leave our residence according to the eviction notice being served by the sheriff five days prior to tomorrow. I dont have and funds to bail myself out, nor does my family.

I know this post is all over the place and i hope its somewhat coherent, im just kinda a mess over all of this happening. Im 23 and been thru a lot but never done anything like this before. I guess im just asking for general advice on what to do or what is going to happen to me. I can explain anything in greater detail if needed. Thank you

Landlord has been withholding my security deposit for 6 months

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 04:57 AM PST

This was in Minneapolis MN. The lease was from August 2016 to August 2017. I got a job offer in June of 2017 and told him I'd like to leave a month early. He said if I helped him find a new tenant that it would be no problem. So I did find one who moved in at the end of July. I also paid for June and July, the new person paid August going forward. He said he'd return the deposit within 3 weeks, and I gave him my new address. I spoke to him 6 weeks later and he said he was getting around to it. Then in November he said he was recently laid off and would like a little more time to send it. I messaged him again a couple weeks ago with no response. He had no complaints of damage to the unit. I have numerous texts saved on my phone of him saying he'd send it. The deposit was $950, he lives in Texas, I'm now in CO. Any ideas?

I found essays that I wrote available on Scribd, is there any way I can get them taken down?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 12:27 PM PST

I have some internships I'm applying for in the next few months and after Googling my name (like I assume they're going to) I saw that an account has posted seven of my assignments from my freshman year honors English class, including outlines, drafts, and final papers. It includes my name, my professor's name, the class, the date, and the entirety of what I wrote. Do I have the right to report it for copyright infringement and abuse? Like I am the exclusive rights holder? I go to a public university in California, the essays I found are from my first year and I am currently in the middle of my third year.

[PA] 50/50 Custody. Ex making several life decisions without notice

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 08:58 AM PST

I have 50/50 custody of my 5 year old daughter. Just before the school season started my ex, without notice, moved to a new area (not far away) in a different school district and enrolled her in school without permission or asking me. Since then I've found out that she has made doctors appointments and changed her insurance without notice. Ive tried to take her to the dentist, but she refused to provide or tell me if she has dental insurance. When I approached her about these issues she argues that the child is more hers than mine and she doesn't need to consult me on any decisions.

My daughter told me yesterday that she shares a bed there with her boyfriends 2 older daughters. All of this makes no sense to me. She should have her own room and go to the school district that I live in, it's a better school and it is where we were both originally given joint custody.

I want to be included in decision making and have a discussion about which school she should attend next year.

Should I take her to court for contempt or should I pay for a lawyer?

How do I respond to former partner if at all?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:53 AM PST

This week I received a message from my ex of two years (split mid 2017). In this message she tells me that due to an incident between us two years ago (early 2016) she is going to need dental work to fix damaged nerve endings in her teeth and a misaligned jaw. It will cost her $2000. She hasn't asked for money.

The Incident: In early 2016 we held a get together at our apartment. Things got rowdy and I got very drunk. We eventually had a very big fight and she pushed me through a standing glass mirror which shattered all over me. Next thing I know I've punched her in the face. She and a friend went to the hospital and gave them a bogus story. She had a black eye and a possible concussion. No police report was filed. We stayed together another 14 months.

Because the details were fuzzy for me, my ex tried to tell me she didn't push me, that I had supposedly tripped and she grabbed out at me. But I remember the anger and the violence at an emotional level. I'm also not a violent person. I don't just go punching people. I've always responded in self-defence to physical altercations and have never instigated them.

The Problem: Regardless, I still feel immense guilt. She got a new bf pretty quick after our breakup and I've been in therapy, only recently getting my life back on track. I've also maintained No Contact since August. She hasn't asked for money, she only seems to have wanted to make me feel bad. But I still feel the right thing to do would be to offer some money. Say a Sum of $1000 in installments (I don't have a lot of money).

The problem is that I don't feel I know this girl anymore, and I don't want to use language that would put me in legal jeopardy (admission of guilt etc.) if she decides she wants to pursue legal recourse. She also had a lot of dental work and xrays done while we were together and there was no mention or 'discovery' of this damage. For all I know she could have suffered some other trauma in our time apart, and so offering any money would be an act of good faith.

I want to put this relationship behind me and do the right thing to help her without also putting myself in legal strife. Which I feel she could already do if she wanted to, as her friends would be her witnesses, while my only witness was passed out on the couch. How should I respond? How can I make an offer to help financially while also maintaining my position that it was an act in response to an assault?

[PA] About to be left high and dry.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:47 AM PST

Okay. My husband of 9 years wants a divorce and plans to move out of my home in the next few months. I live in the commonwealth state of PA. Two kids and working part-time.

He knows full well that, financially, I cannot run this household. Can he really move out and leave me high and dry with two kids to care for? What can I do? What steps I should be taking so I don't get the short end of the stick? What do I need to prepare myself for court?

He is on the lease but not the deed to my house. After he moves out, how do I get him off the lease so I can change the locks.

He already obtained but hasn't filed the divorce papers. A divorce is something we can't really afford living paycheck to paycheck. Him making more than I do, he may just pay to file and leave other bills go for a few weeks.

I am so terribly lost. I don't know where to go from here. If more details are needed I am more than willing to give them. Thanks in advance.

Grandmother stole a newborn baby. Mother needs help desperately! (Texas Family Law, Tarrant)

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:22 AM PST

It's a long story but I'll try to give the short version. One of my daughter best friends got involved with an abusive boy (that's a whole other story) and got pregnant. When the baby was 6 days old, the paternal grandmother came to the apartment and, against the mothers repeated sobbing pleas, took the nursing baby away from her mother. She had gone to the bathroom to get herself under control and when she came out a couple minutes later, they were gone. The grandmother now has possession of the baby and is hiding her from the mother. The father stayed with the grandmother for the first couple days but has since abandoned the baby in the care of his mother.

Grandmother's history: - has already had 3 of 4 children taken by the CPS and is not allowed access to them.
    - habitual criminal, twice convicted felon (meth and identity theft) with misdemeanor convictions, also - amoral, openly boasts about her "relationships" with gang members (both Crips and Bloods), - confessed to using meth since being on parole and boasts about knowing how to do it without getting caught

We've tried every route we can think of for help. CPS apparently can't help. When they went to check on the baby, the "child had not been harmed" so they said she could stay there. Police won't help because it's a civil matter. Can't afford a lawyer and none of the recommended resources can help for various reasons - 2-3 week to determine if they have resources, case too complex, CPS already called, only work on judges orders, doesn't have the resources... Left messages at a number of places so they could call back in 3-5 business days. Cannot even leave a message at the only one who has actually called back.

Because we felt it was urgent to get the baby out of a bad situation as quickly as possible, we spent time researching at the law library and filed motions and petitions and orders pro se. The judge signed the Habeas Corpus for a Child but would not sign the Writ of Attachment to allow the sheriff to pick up the baby immediately. Now the mother has to go to court and justify her rights in front of a judge while facing this manipulative, intimidating witch who has no rights to this child at all.

    Help!! Please Help!

[MI] Can I ask my employer how their random drug test selection works?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 06:33 AM PST

I'm going into my third year at this job and I have been "randomly" selected every year right around the new year/new fiscal year mark. I'm the youngest person in my department by about 14 years (I'm 30 vs 45, 55, and 55). Since I've been hired no one else in my department has been randomly selected for a drug test while I'm going on my 3rd or 4th.

I feel like there might be some age discrimination involved. I've never failed a test and I want to make sure that these "random" tests aren't kept on record. I don't want to apply for another job or a government position and have someone ask me why my company drug tested me so often.

Do they legally have to inform me about their selection measures?

[NV] Ex Girlfriend refuses to return my dog

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 12:39 PM PST

I would like advice on whether I should seek legal council, and if so what type of lawyer to contact. Any other ideas you may have are welcome as I really just want my dog back.

My ex-girlfriend was watching my dog while I got situated in my new apartment. When I attempted to get my dog back, she refused and said the dog belonged to both of us. I contacted the local authorities and the officers told me that the dog was considered property so they could not help. They advised me to go to small claims court. I mailed a demand letter to my ex girlfriend, she did not respond within 10 days of receipt so I went down to the JC to file in small claims. The clerk informed me that Small Claims could only recover the monetary value of the dog and not the dog itself. They advised me to write a complaint and file a case in the justice court.

I purchased the dog for over $4,000. I have the receipts and documents that name me as the owner of the dog.

Recently found out my parents liquidated an Education IRA set up in my name by my grandmother. What are my options now?

So, basically: my grandmother recently passed. I was left some jewelry in her will but no money. However, when I was cleaning out her house and I found an envelope with my name on it. In the envelope there are bank statements for an Educational IRA set up in my name.

My father was listed as the custodian of the account. The last statement is from the year I turned 18. I am 27 this year and have never heard my parents mention this account to me.

I went to my grandmother's bank and found out the account was liquidated the year I turned 18. Obviously not by me, but there are some forms that have "my" signature on them.

My parents obviously took the money but have never mentioned this to me. It was a considerable amount of money. I am very upset as well because I haven't finished my undergraduate degree yet, because I can't afford the tuition. And I'm embarrassed because when my grandmother asked about my college in the past I complained about how expensive it is. Obviously, she thought I knew she had paid for it so she probably thought I was rudely implying that I wanted more of her money.

What are my legal options now? I would like to get this money back, if possible. I am not opposed to suing my parents (we are not close, this is not out of character for them). However I don't know if I have the money to start suing them.

Edit: also an automod bot told me to add my location: I am on the east coast of the US. Sorry the post isn't more accurate or specific, I was am still really upset. If it needs any other information, I don't mind editing again.

[Update] Adopted a dog with heartworm

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 01:49 PM PST

Things got super complicated. I contacted and talked with a health inspector for the county the rescue operates in and he came down on them hard.

Apparently he has been trying to get these people shut down for a while, ever since he found a foster home with dogs in horrible horrible conditions. He told me about a state law that allows me to receive double the adoption fee I paid for the pup for medical costs, so I should be getting a check this week.

In addition, he told me that rescues like this one exist in a grey area or a loophole between laws governing shelters and pet stores. And while he knows that this rescue has been practicing some shady tactics such as not testing dogs they pick up, lapsing on vaccines and meds, and potentially lying about the age of the dog; there isn't much he can do because in the State of NJ, there is very little government regulation for rescue organizations such as this one.

While I am getting nearly all of the vet bill covered, I'm not particularly satisfied. He put me in contact with the office of the local state congressman who has a platform for animal welfare and reform and I will be meeting with them next week to discuss a potential legislative reform. The main issue is that rescue organizations that use a network of foster families instead of an actual shelter can get away with a whole lot of horrible things in regards to animal welfare because of the lack of oversight and regulations. And without the law covering the backs of health inspectors, there isn't much they can do. So we will see how that goes.

In trying to close all the holes in my dogs' medical paperwork, I found out she had puppies back in spring 2017. I had no idea about that and by complete accident found one of her puppies and a person who had her before she was shuffled through 4 shelters and ended up with me. So now I'm going to try to adopt her puppy and reunite the two.

I know this might not be the right place to ask, but does anyone here have any experience in working with a local government to introduce legislate reform? I'm trying to gather evidence from other people who have been through this shelter and since it's not really about money anymore should I look into getting a lawyer to take this to the state government? Not sure how to proceed from here.

    Thanks everyone for their advice!

How long after shoplifting on camera can I be prosecuted/caught? US

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:26 AM PST

    Washington State

In September I was a fucking idiot and stole $20 of merchandise from a Spencer's at the mall whilst directly under a security camera. The thing I took supposedly had a security tag but no buzzer went off when I left. I'm worried I was seen when reviewing the footage to find the missing merchandise because I wasn't talked to in the store.

I'm a minor and haven't really changed my appearance very much since the last time I was there and was definitely caught on camera in several stores and whilst I was stealing. My family is planning to make an outing to the mall that I shoplifted from and I really don't want to be the daughter that gets yelled at for shoplifting a dildo in front of her grandmother. Is it a bad idea to return to the mall???

(sorry if this is the wrong subreddit.)

    Discussion of pay

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 07:54 AM PST

Location is Virginia: today I received a company email sent by the GM of the store instructing employees to stop discussing employee pay and if it continues the employee can be written up or let go. I have not personally discussed my pay at week but others have mentioned their wage to me in the past. Can someone actually get fired over this? Also would I be in trouble for being part of a conversation about wages if someone mentions they spoke to me? If you're written up enough times you can also get fired.

[NC] so my 16 year old friends father passed away leaving him with the debt of the cancer treatment

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 09:49 PM PST

Hi guys, My best friends father passed away unexpectedly and he had cancer. He was in a significant amount of debt to pay for the treatments and now my friend was informed that he and his older brother would each receive half of the debt to pay back. My friend is beyond stressed out about this. I do not know most of the details about this but I was wondering if he has any recourse to deal with this. I really want to help him out. He is really depressed that he might be saddled with debt for the rest of his life that is not his. I know once of the creditors is the American cancer society. There is basically no inheritance to speak of and he will be recieving a life insurance check but not enough to cover the debt. The bank is also attempting to repossess his dad's truck which he now drive in order to get to work. Any thoughts would be deeply appreciated. If any ideas pan out and really help him I will gold the comment.
