Should I be calling every employee that didn't email me back to update W-2 addresses? small business

Should I be calling every employee that didn't email me back to update W-2 addresses?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 02:37 PM PST

First time doing this and not sure how "hard" I should be trying to get an answer from them. What happens if they don't get it because they never responded to inquiries on their updated address?

Also, as an example on them resending their W-4s as well, an employee had twins in October. I asked them to resend their W-4s but they haven't yet. Is it too late to update it?

And how do you accrue sick time using ADP since it's automatic, but lets say a pay period was dec 21 - jan 5. Since they're only supposed to accrue hours from Jan 1 - 5 (new policy) how would I go about doing that. Asking because it'll just take the "hours worked" from dec 21 - jan 5 to calculate that right?

Can anyone recommend a basic but solid SEO service?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 10:25 PM PST

I launched a company in September, we dont do any business online, nor do we find our clients online, however we have high level older professional clientele who judge our legitimacy based on how our website looks. I've found that clients often often google the company name after we pitch them and I received feedback that it looks bad our company website is not the first result (given that no other company has our name). Presently if you google our company, the first result is our LinkedIn page, then two random articles from 12 years ago in which someone shares the name of our company, then the fourth result is our company website. I'm looking to pay someone to bump up our company website above the 12 year old articles. Any suggestions? This area isn't my strong point, so apologies if this is a stupid question.

    Pre-Development legal problems

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 03:43 AM PST

Hi Reddit, I'm a swiss 16 year old and I have been preparing to launch an online platform for small jobs in the past couple weeks. I have secured funding, got connections for marketing and potential clients and my developers are ready to start creating the website as soon as I give them the green light. But I have a problem, in Switzerland there is a law saying that you need to have at least 3 years work experience in the field or have a high school diploma or higher. (I do not finish hs until next year) As I am also doing this project for a school project I am unable to postpone it to next year. My investors are also all minors.

Having talked with my dad we came up with 2 possible solutions, finding a set partner who already has a similar platform in the field, or somehow finding a loophole in the system (unlikely but not impossible)

This is where I ask you, any suggestions on how to bypass this issue?

What do you use for mass-texting and general text message communication/announcements to your customers?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 07:31 PM PST

I found an excellent resource here but I want to post this again because I know not many people saw it, and I know there's probably much more the community can discuss in regards to the topic.

I'm looking for something that can do mass messaging. I recently joined a business that stores phone numbers for customers, but just relies on hand-calling them. Instead, I'd like to migrate to an SMS service for communication. Several customers like the idea of it, and it sounds like there are plenty of services out there that make it very easy and affordable to do. There's an issue with sending texts to landline obviously, so maybe someone can weigh in on how they get around that (or even find out if something is or isn't a landline number).

So, in regards to SMS/text communication with clients and customers: what do you use, how large of a scale do you use it on, and what do you use it to accomplish?

    Advice on Family Business.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 01:01 AM PST

So, my dad has been running a business for around 20 years which I'm interested in joining. Business in the manufacturing industry which does around $6M in revenue and growing. My dad is nearing retirement at age 60 with, I would guess another 5-10 years left of working, although I think he'll always have one foot in the door.

Now about me, 20 years old and about to start the final year of my bachelors in accounting and finance and am wanting to join him as soon as a graduate. I went for an accounting degree for the knowledge, and personally would never want to be an accountant, the issue is my dad and others suggest I should go work somewhere for 1 year (accounting firm) to gain experience working with others etc. Personally I'd prefer to hit the ground running and gain experience in the business from graduation.

I could see myself working there indefinitely as I do like what he does. I feel that if I don't take this opportunity all the hard work he put into it would be wasted with no one wanting to continue. (Brothers became accountants and have not wanted to be involved) I also see a huge amount of potential for the business, as it has very few restrictions to grow in its industry.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Need advice, my dad's business is in trouble!

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 03:05 PM PST

I don't know if this is the exact subreddit to post this, but i couldn't find another one recognized for dealing with advices and other real life situations.

I'll try to describe my dad's business as vague as possible to preserve our privacy and that of those involved.

My dad is the founder of a now large talent agency here in my country, he founded the company in the 1970's and built it from the ground up until he left 8 years ago, he's still the majority owner, but upon leaving he left one of his major agents and most trusted friend and employee as chairman. My dad's friends who i respect immensely, has done a terrific job, mind you, i'm only 18 years old and i don't understand much of the business, but it's quite clear that since my dad's absence he turned the agency into a household name and even took down a couple of our competitors in these last years. Quite recently, my dad has been teasing with the idea of going back to work, he has been taking interest in a few big clients (mostly actors) having dinner with them, long talks through the phone, and even inviting them to the shooting range here at home. My dad's friend who ran the company for the last 8 years, took notice and from what i can tell, already figured out my dad's plans on going back to work, which would mean my dad's eager to reclaim his company and leadership and my dad's friends is worried he will be demoted from the chairman position. Any advice for my dad? since he could suffer the possible coup, where my dad's friend could attempt to take the major clients and agents with him?

Help, Shady buying agents screwing me

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 09:59 PM PST

OK so quick back story, it run a small home based online business and recently tried branching out and buying stuff direct from China via a buying agent. I foolishly sought out the cheapest one and after some research to verify they where more or less on the up and up (DH Pay - takes CC and PayPal among other things) I placed a small order. No problems, so I put in for a larger one that would require sea freight. Now I'm 75 days later and after multiple excuses have finally gotten a refund but am missing their "commission" out of it! I sent another angry and threatening msg that I will go to my CC Company and PayPal to get my money back but I'm wondering if I should transfer the majority or the refund I did get back to my PayPal or leave it in their "finance" website thing? If I withdrawal it to my PayPal will that hinder any attempts to get the rest back thru PayPal or my.CC company? Thanks in advance!

    Subscription plan for companies

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 06:13 PM PST

Currently I offer graphic and web design service, here and through my website.

This is not an unique idea but I kinda like it. I was thinking to offer companies/people monthly graphic design subscription. Idea is to give 22 designs (of any kind - logos, posters, social media posts, ads, banners...) per month. Subscription would be $1500 (2 months) or $6000 per year.

I know there is a cheaper options and they give unlimited designs, but I don't believe in those designs. Also, how can they complete the work if they get ''3000'' orders from multiple clients?

Do you think this is a good idea? Is it too expensive (can be cheaper than hiring a designer every single time or hire full time designer in your company)? Is anyone here that runs any type of business that would like to subscribe to this?

    Thank you.

I buy, operate, and sell bread and snack routes. AMA

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 09:00 AM PST

Every once and awhile I run into posts on small business that are interested in buying "routes." What are routes? They are similar to a franchise for a company in which you "buy" the right to distribute an established brand (Fedex, candy, bread, chips, cake) in a designated area (your territory).

It is a business not for the faint of heart, its not a get rich quick scheme but it is STEADY work, with the potential for a strong income and a sell-off for big profits (much like a house, bigger profits depends on location).

So I figure it would be a fun AMA to do if anyone has any questions about a business that not a lot of people even knows exists. Much of the problems we deal with are similar to most other businesses (managing an LLC, keeping costs down, customer service and sales), just in a more managed, corporate environment.

    So IAMA bread man, AMA.

POS System for a drive through Coffee business

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 05:23 PM PST

Hello, my family is starting up a small drive through coffee shop. We are browsing for POS/cash payment systems and I thought to stop here to see what others have used and trust to work well.

A local person near us is selling an Ipad Air 2 with a square POS for $400, we are still looking for what we would need however.

Saving a local PC repair shop on last legs

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 05:20 PM PST

    Hey all.

I currently work for a small local PC repair shop and we are not in good shape since I joined last October.

To start, we do not make enough to profit and rent is expensive in our area.

We charge a simple fare of $120 for our base services, but even on 2-3 customers at worst each day that is not enough to cover bases. I am not aware of the finer details but I am the one in charge of advertising with next to no budget.

What can I try to advertise and save this shop from closing down? I've tried local papers and bulletins but the pricing on advertisements are too high. I've posted on craigslist, nextdoor, and Facebook about our events and some promotions to bring in business to no avail.

Should we raise our prices? Advertise in different venues? We are local only, that is a big problem in my eyes as there isn't a constant market for PC repairs. Is there an online venture we can pursue to bring in extra money?

Thank you so much for any help

    Help starting new LLC.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 04:52 PM PST

I recently started an LLC to provide tech services to small companies. This isn't something I plan on doing full time in the beginning so I would be doing some after hour/weekend work. The focus of the business would be installing new networks/services but not supporting daily support. The question I have is what do I need for behind the scenes stuff: type of insurance, billing software, who writes the contracts, is there a common SLA template? Any advice with what to get for new businesses would be great.

I still have a few questions after doing some research on LLCs in TX for my project/upcoming small business

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 03:38 PM PST

I am in Texas and the service I will provide is access to a closed/private Twitter account that provides realtime financial information (all built and managed by me). I hope to process payments/monthly subscriptions through PayPal or similar. Any advice or input on payment processing options is also very much appreciated as I have no direct experience with it to date.

I do not have an LLC yet, but have familiarized myself with that process here in Texas and it looks simple enough: register the name, pay the fee, and get an EIN. I plan to be the sole member in the LLC, without any employees, and I'm under the impression income from the LLC will simply be reported annually by me via a 1040 (even if there is no income) along with a formal "Annual Report" filed with the state.

I still have some outstanding questions about all this, though:

    • There is some sort of an annual Franchise Tax that appears to catch a number of people off-guard here in Texas. What would be my exposure to that tax? It appears, after my initial reading, that I would file a "no tax due report" as part of my "Annual Report" unless my annualized revenue meets or exceeds $1,110,000, which I expect is highly unlikely. And I would therefore not be subject to any taxes outside of the impact on my personal finances via the income reported on the 1040.

    • Regarding sales taxes -- how does that work for "online retailers?" I expect to regularly process CC payments from out of state and out of country. How do I handle that safely/accurately?

    • Do I need to have a separate DBA for the related Twitter identity if I don't want to use the "Generic Name LLC" on the Twitter account? I'd like to anonymize the project to the fullest & safest extent possible.

    • Do I need to make any considerations regarding making myself an "employee?" I am under the impression that as the sole member of the LLC, I won't even have to worry about the concept of an "employee," even for myself, and all income from the LLC will simply go under my name somewhere... somehow. Is that accurate? This is so confusing.

    • I've built these systems on my own personal property (spare computers) and want them to remain in their current location & configuration simply for... simplicity's sake. Do I need to separate those virtual tools/systems/inventories in some way or declare them in some formal capacity? Or is that just required if there's a formal audit of some kind down the road? Effectively, this was a personal project designed for my own benefit which works functionally well and I feel like I am just losing money by not offering it to the public for a fee, at this point. I do not want to abandon/overhaul/migrate/rebuild the current configuration if it's not necessary.

Thank you for any possible guidance you can provide. I really appreciate it. Please let me know if I should x-post this somewhere else and I'll do that as well.

    TY!

How could generating these indoor 3D maps add real value to an industry/business?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 03:35 PM PST

We can automatically generate good lookin', interactive, indoor 3D maps, but we're having trouble coming up with situations/business ideas where this would solve a real need and isn't a "soft" use case. Have any ideas? We're completely open ears/eyes.

    Clip of map in action

    Details:

    • Input is GeoJSON derived from CAD files

    • Could theoretically build anything on top of it with an SDK and APIs that enable customization

    • We've tested the use case of visitor wayfinding (mobile, web, kiosk, etc.), but we consider those soft use cases (as do the locations), and not necessary to the experience of those places

Feedback on new online home decor shop

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 03:27 PM PST

Hi all, I kicked off my online store this past November (valianthomedecor.com). I have a full time job and have given myself a 2 - 3 year time frame to make it sustainable enough for me to quit the 9-5. Since time is a major factor for me, can you please critique what I currently have to make it more appealing. I know I have to update the photos for continuity. I'm getting some traction via instagram and FB, but it's necessarily generating sales. What would you suggest to 1. make it more appealing, 2. tactics of engagement with customers? I have a blog which ideally i'd like to do weekly and include DIYs, home renos and the occasional travel excursion. 3. create a steady stream of sales? Thanks in advance for the feedback.

No one is here to judge, I'm just really curious

    • How much did it cost?
    • Was it worth it?
    • Was there any noticeable effects to your business from these reviews? Positive or Negative?
    • What was the process like? Really secretive or fairly open?
    • Would you recommended it?

One of my employees want to become our IT service provider

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 12:48 PM PST

EDIT: PLOT TWIST: I'M THE EMPLOYEE / WANNABE MSP, not the CEO. I described the whole situation exactly how it is. This is how we see management and this is how he sees me. This is exactly what he said to me.

I'm CEO of a 50 employees business. We are a family business and all management is from my family.

One of my employees is our internal IT guy. He's been running a side business for a few years but he's still here about 30hr a week. Sometimes, he takes a day off to work on hit tiny business. He's been my employee for 10 years. He built our network. He knows how the whole IT thing works here. We have no other internal IT resources except a few (including myself) that can troubleshoot some issues.

So last week, he wanted to meet me. He began talking about managed IT services he offers. He finally offered to manage all of our IT for a predetermined monthly price, including one onsite visit per week, unlimited remote support, monitoring and a few other things that I can't remember right now.

This employee gets bored easily when things go stale or when we give him unrelated tasks. We have a lot of data entry tasks that we dispatch to our employees, even though these tasks are not part of their regular job. He gets quite a few of them and I know he dislike doing these unrelated tasks.

So at first, I told him that it could be interesting, but after thinking about it, I don't think I'm interested anymore. First, we don't allow employees to work from home, except those in our family. If we allow an employee to work from home, all other employees will want to do it too. So regular employees don't have the privilege to work from home except management (our family). Even if he was and external contractor or a "IT service business" like he calls himself, we would not trust anyone working from home. What proves me that he will actually do any work? He could be doing anything but working on our servers. If we pay him, lets say, between 3000-5000$ per month to do nothing, better hire a lower salary young employee willing to work AND do unrelated tasks. If he needs help with the servers or network, he could call him. But he's not interested in selling hour blocks, only managed services.

So I ended up saying him that I'm not so sure and we could discuss it in a few months.

Since he expressed his desire to do something else, what would you do? Would you keep him? Would you replace him? He's doesn't seem happy with my decision. I know that it's not an ultimatum and I know he won't really leave.

What should I do? And any of you have experience with such "managed services" ?
