How To Respond To A Credit Card Chargeback

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:33 PM PST

Alright reddit, after $1 million+ processed, I got my first credit card chargeback. I need some guidance on how to respond.

It is code Visa Reason Code 85.

We are home service contractor. Took a deposit via credit card. Ordered materials. Scheduled the project. Day we show up on site the customer tells us he no longer wants it done. Demands refund of deposit. We decline. Customer disputes credit card charge.

We have a signed contract which states deposit amount, credit card details (name, card type, last 4, exp). Then the verbiage "I authorize ______________ to charge my credit card above for deposit and final balance in conjunction with service agreement. I understand that deposits are non-refundable. And then right below that a signature.

How do I respond to that chargeback?

Note: there's also another page, signed, that says "All deposits are non-refundable in the event of cancellation by the client".

How to structure LLC's and DBA's to maintain anonymity/legal protection?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 02:33 PM PST

I'd like to start a small business where I buy and sell land. I plan to buy the land from private sellers then turn around and sell them to other entities, either business or private individuals.

I need to make sure my buying arm is totally separated from the selling arm to make sure none of the land owners have any idea what I am planning to do with the land once I have bought it.

While I don't think I'll be needing to be worried about getting sued constantly, I know I should have at the very least an LLC in place to protect myself. However, I have read that DBA's can be sued as if they were sole proprietor entities. I've also heard that places like Wyoming have built in LLC protections. I am located in Minnesota.

The question is, do I keep everything in Minnesota to keep it simple? Or perhaps make 1 LLC in WY and have it "own" a separate LLC in MN?

Any reason to NOT do a WY LLC, such as foreign business fees or whatever it's called when you file out of state?

    Thanks!

Sole practitioner architect of 14 years, now thinking of going back to work for a larger firm. Will I regret this?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 02:08 PM PST

Business hasn't worked out the way I thought. I haven't been able to attract good clients. Creatively unfulfilled. Short on cash. Stressed about where my next project will come from. Spending way too much time on things that aren't architecture.

I have some ideas about rebranding and starting from scratch but I need some time to put a plan together while still generating income to pay the bills. On the other hand, working for a firm again, even if temporary, makes me a bit nervous. Things like office culture, commuting, taking creative direction from senior staff, etc. Will the adjustment be more stressful than it's worth? Help, someone talk me out of it!

The current best VOIP unlimited call/texting service for a small business?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 05:32 PM PST

What's the best VOIP service for a small business that isn't google voice? The ones I'm looking at online seem pretty outdated, anyone have a recommendation?

The only things I need are: 1 number, ability to use with smartphone apps, and ability to text

    Thank you

What Networking Groups are Worth the Time/Expense?

I own a cyber security MSSP and consulting company specializing in solutions for SMBs. I have been looking into the local chamber, but also BNI. New to this area so not sure if it's worth it. What was your ROI and which group(s) did you join? Thanks!

National Public Radio playing in an independent retail space

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 08:56 PM PST

I co own a small retail store. Today my business partner and I had a discussion about how they felt playing NPR over the store radio was inappropriate. Granted there is a bunch of information about playing music in a store but is there harm in playing NPR? Does playing NPR negate having a sound system in the store? I couldn't find any articles about it so maybe I'm just full of nonsense for pondering this; however, would you feel less likely to shop if the store were playing NPR?

Just curious. Thanks for your opinions.

What Product to Invest Time into First?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 07:38 PM PST

A friend and I have created a business based around games, primarily board games. Currently we've been setting up all the legal stuff, getting a website running, bank account, etc. Doing all our research on the future.

Now we're at a decent point to continue forward with the actual products themselves. We have a few ideas that have been really fleshed out and are ready for the next stages of production (prototyping and whatnot). We have realised that the current #1 in time allocation may not be our best foot forward. We obviously don't expect to make millions off our first product, maybe hundreds if anything at all. So we have the question: Do we continue with our current main project since it's more of a learning experience and a community builder than anything else; or do we push it to the side and go with a game we would have better experience creating (we enjoy strategy games). As people who haven't done this type of thing before we aren't sure whether or not to use the first game almost like a "test dummy" then show whatever community we gain a better game with more experience behind it (both in gameplay and business). The first game is by no means bad, it might just be not as good as our current potential. It's essentially a party/family game from players of strategy games; not impossible, but not our specialty persay.

Footnote: if anyone has any knowledge about this sort of subject, or just tips you think we'd find handy, they would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Seeking Marketing Partner

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:51 AM PST

Revised details: We're a startup fitness brand "BURLY" and trademarked. Recently launched our burly wrist wraps and have plans to grow the product line into other areas. We have 2 websites, an amazon biz, and 25k+ social followers. Links below.

Sold around 170 units on IG. Cost is $4-5 w/ shipping and sell for $24.95- 29.99.

Basically, i have little interest or desire for marketing. I haven't tapped into paid ads, funnels, networking, seo etc.

I'm a petroleum engineer. Background is in the oil & gas biz. I would prefer to focus on operations and product development / design.

The brand and intellectual property has a lot of potential. My vision is to expand into apparel, strength/conditioning gear, and establish retail partnerships.

I would be open to a profit share partnership or vested equity agreement with the right person.

Open to suggestions. Feel free to let me know if you, or someone you know, may be a good fit.

What should I concentrate on first: gaining followers or setting up a shop?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:09 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm currently in the process of starting my first business: an online shop where I sell energy drink-themed merch like t shirts, caps, stickers and stuff.

My initial approach was to start a blog where I review and rate energy drinks, driving traffic to my site and gaining a solid follower base. I wasn't really sure how to make money apart from amazon affiliate marketing though.

After I've done a little bit of market research, I found out that there were already a few sites doing the same thing. Some of them even had a few thousand followers and fans on Facebook, but apparently, they all failed to find a profitable way to monetize their site, so not a single one of those review sites is online anymore.

That's where I came up with the idea to incorporate a shop into my blog, where I could start selling t shirts and stuff. Branding would be relatively easy because I'm practically the only one in this niche and don't have any real competition.

Now I'm wondering if I should still stick to the inital plan and start blogging or do both things simultaneously. Gaining followers/customers would be a lot easier if I had products that I could market on various social media channels instead of just relying on SEO or Google rankings. Plus, I could start making money a lot faster.

Do I have a flaw in my thought process? Is there something I'm overlooking? Any help is appreciated!

FREE social media marketing & management from my established agency, for YOUR business (Giving something back to r/smallbusiness)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 01:36 PM PST

    Hi there,

Long-time lurker and infrequent poster here – some of you may or may not know that over the past few months, I've used this wonderful resource and pool of knowledge that is r/smallbusiness to gain not only invaluable advice, but even long-term clients, and since my social media marketing & management agency has now grown to 15 employees strong, I wanted to give something back to the community.

My agency, Social Gainer, was born out of the vision to provide an affordable, quality service – the average social media marketing and management agency will charge $3,000 - $4,000 a month; we provide exactly the same as them, and more on top, for a literally negligible price that any business could afford – obviously I can't disclose the exact figure, but to even the smallest or newest of businesses, it's an insignificant cost (that doesn't sacrifice on quality!) – and anyway, unlike most, we aim to provide our clients a return on investment through social media, so it's more like we're paying you, to work for you, if that makes sense? 😉

At this point, we've taken on a wide variety of clients, from one of the largest home brewing suppliers in North America, to a $2mil funded Silicon Valley self-driving start-up, several small local businesses and a completely new online blog.

Anyway – here's what we're willing to offer your business, regardless of whether you're a fresh start-up, local independent business, or corporate empire – for free, for two weeks:

    • A guarantee to grow your social media profiles by 100% in at least two areas.

    • Two Twitter posts a day, and a Facebook and Instagram post every Monday, Thursday and Saturday (such are the best days for viewership and engagement) – with the whole schedule of posts across all platforms approved by you 100% beforehand, so you know exactly what's going out.

    • A fully comprehensive report at the end of the two weeks, detailing in precise terms the progress of all your social media platforms, such as followers and likes gained, alongside extensive research into your potential future growth, return on investment and indeed your online demographic and market (this being how to identify and attract your core customer base – and more still, grow it!)

    • 24/7 General support and advice on any matters pertaining to online presence coupled with consultancy advice on online marketing and presence

Let me be clear: this is a free, two week, no strings attached offer from us to you; quite simply, if you think we're worth the investment at the end of it, then feel free to take us on full time – we pride ourselves in being highly affordable. But, if you didn't want to stay on with us, that would be fine and we'd wish you all the best.

If you'd like to take up on this unique, free opportunity then please get back to me at admin@socialgainer.co.uk or leave a comment here, I can only take on so many people, so if in doubt, get in contact - as soon as possible! If you'd like, it would be wonderful, as part of our offer, to sit down and have a face to face meeting via Skype so we can get acquainted and go through the finer details, although if just going between E-Mail is more your style, then that's great too.

We look forward to hearing from you soon,

Sebastian, founder of Social Gainer; admin@socialgainer.co.uk

P.S. - It doesn't matter if you haven't got social media accounts for your business, we'd be glad to help with that!

By the way, here are some referrals/quotes regarding Social Gainer:

"Sebastian has been working on accounts for me and really is a tremendous help. I would recommend him to anyone who needs some help in the social media area. My account has really grown in following and interaction in just over a few weeks"

"I don't think I'd have it as big as I do now if it wasn't for your help" Brian Meiggs, founder and current owner of Millennial Money Guide

Best way to scan 40k customer sign up sheets and create a spreadsheet with the information on them?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:35 PM PST

We have about have about 40,000 sheets of paper customers filled out with the name, address, phone number, and email we collected during many years and want to get this information to a spreadsheet so we can import them into our new CRM.

An example of the sheet is https://imgur.com/a/ef1zf

I was thinking the first step is to digitize them, but would it be possible to use OCR to go through 40k pdfs and kick out what I need? is OCR that powerful now? Just pay a kid hourly to data entry? There has to be a much better way.

Maybe hire a VA? Use mechnical turk?

What is the best option, I am open to paying a company to do it as well if its feasable.

[UK] Should I register as a Ltd company

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:30 PM PST

I currently earn money via Upwork and also design and sell greetings cards. In addition, I recently launched a profitable Minecraft server network with a friend.

Is it worth establishing as a limited company? The only directors would be myself and my friend, and all money I earn (Upwork / server / cards) would go into it.

I understand that I'd need to get a business bank account and place the money in there, and pay myself through 'dividends'. I also understand that profits are taxable at 21% - how do I figure out profits for selling cards / Upwork? I earn a royalty for my cards and Upwork costs me nothing, so it's all profit, and for the server everything is profit minus hosting costs.

Is there a threshold before profit is taxed?

Is there a threshold before dividends are taxed at 10%?

    Thank you!

Do You Have a Features List You Used to Compare POS/Shopping Cart Systems?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:04 PM PST

Of course each POS system/shopping cart vendor has a list of features on their site. But understandably they only show what they have not what they're missing.

Do you have a document you came up with when you were doing your research you wouldn't mind sharing? I'm not looking for it to be filled out with each product's info, rather just the list of features you evaluated for each vendor.

    Thanks!

An idea that needs some direction.. need experienced advise about insurance type stuff.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 09:37 AM PST

I needed my fence stained, and after calling a bazillion painters/fence crews, I realized that there aren't many in my area that are reliable.

After finding one that does great work at a low cost, I'm seeing that they now nothing about marketing/customers.

My idea (not new - I get that)... if I create a business name, DBA, and file a tax license. Can I advertise as a fence staining company - negotiate sales with customers and sub this guy out (assuming he'd like this idea)?

Would I need insurance, or would he?

I know my state doesn't require a contractor license... but I'm afraid of what other things I may be missing that could bite me later.

    Thanks

starting my own thing, need advice

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 08:52 AM PST

I work at a chain of 4 laundromats in West Texas as the General Manager. I have about 30 employees, I have 2 store managers that assist me, one at my newest location, one at my furthest distance location. I do payroll, inventory, all maintenance (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, equipment), invoicing accounts and state and local compliance. Hiring, terminations, and solving problems, customers and employees. Between drop off and pick up and delivery laundry service, we generate about $86k a month gross. All 4 locations generate about $80k a month gross in self service customers. The owners handle all bookkeeping, taxes, bills, insurance and such. I'm paid $92k for this. So here is where i need advice. In January of 2016 one of the owners opened a franchise of workout studios in our area. By february of 2017 after 2 open studios he still could not find reliable maintenance for his equipment, nearest was about 5 hours away. I went to utah, got the training to be an authorized service provider for his brand of equipment, which it turns out, the company that i went to get the training is the largest manufacturer of exercise equipment in the US. So I get a lot of business, not including the studios. I have a guaranteed monthly of income of 750$ through preventive maintenance service contracts of 3 studios, with 3 more opening 2019-2020 and i will have those contracts also. I also average about 1000$ a month on service calls. 1. Do i need to create an llc ? If yes whats the most affordable way of doing this? 2. Where do i find affordable business insurance for this type of business? 3. I need an efficient invoicing/accounting program.
