Posted: 07 Jan 2018 05:14 PM PST Hello, I'm currently a Junior in College and I've been investing for 2+ years, and I'm interested in some solid companies that have a decent % yield for dividends. I'm trying to build a backbone to my portfolio and introduce passive income, if you could recommend some stocks I can check out to implement growth I'd appreciate it. Thanks! p.s. I've found interest in $ORC because of it's solid yield to help grow portfolio faster. [link] [comments] |
Are there good tutorials for option trading? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 07:44 PM PST Specifically, how to execute option trades. What values to look for (e.g. Greek letters)? Just the basics for trading options. [link] [comments] |
International Investing: 2 Index ETFs that cover China Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:58 PM PST I wanted to provide some advice for individuals who would like to invest in China, but aren't sure where to start. International equities rose 40%+ last year, compared to the ~22% gain from the S&P 500, making International investing an attractive opportunity. There's a lot of talk about $BABA, $JD, $TCEHY and a lot of other Chinese companies, but sometimes it's hard to choose which one is going to be the best. My recommendation would be to look into $HAO and $YAO ("Small Cap" and "All Market" Chinese Index ETFs, respectively). These two are EDIT: Correction -- The expense ratios are a little hefty for these ETFs. I was looking at a few others when I had originally submitted this post and got these mixed up. $GXC is a great alternative, but here's a compiled list of ETFs in case people would like to compare and contrast. If nothing else, I'm just trying to help point people in the right direction for International investing. Not trying to claim one ETF is better than another, or that the two ETFs mentioned above are the best. [link] [comments] |
Bonds and Portfolio Allocation Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:27 PM PST Hello, Sorry I'm on my mobile. I am a married 29 year old who is employed in software development and owns a home. I max out my 401(k) and my Roth IRA every year for the last 5 years since I have been in the workforce. 401(k) = Target Date Fund 2055. Roth IRA = 60% VTI, 30% VXUS, 10% VB. Employee stock account. I get around $12,000 per year in company stock and I always reinvest it. Since I have maxed out my retirement vehicles that I know of: Should I buy stock within my taxable account or park it somewhere else? I could see me using this money in 15 years from now, but it is not necessarily apart of my retirement. My plan was to keep stocks only in my Roth IRA since the money has already been taxed, I have the potential to see higher gains without adding bonds, correct? But it is more tax efficient to put bonds in either a 401(k) or a Roth IRA because they are tax advantages accounts as opposed to the Taxable Account? Should I sell VB and buy BND in my Roth IRA instead? I know VTI includes Small Cap, but obviously the VB gives me more exposure. Any advice is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Where would you increase/reduce your exposure to make your portfolio marginally more ethical? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:41 PM PST I know thoughts on making ethical investments get shat on a lot on this sub, but consider the following scenario: All firms create value for consumers in a society, and the exchange of that value is returned to shareholders. The act of producing some goods and services and supplying them to the markets has an externality to society that is positive or negative. Let's say I'm a fund manager for a social index fund. My goal is to take a regular index fund and rebalance it to some degree so that companies that produce social good are weighted heavier and companies that produce social bad are weighted lighter. OR at the very least, you want to put some guardrails so that companies that produce social bad are divested from. In a perfect world, this fund would trade higher than we would otherwise expect based on risk/return because some element of the social return that didn't show up on the balance sheet would matter to investors, who would pay a premium to know they weren't contributing to social harm. (All this is admittedly really hard to quantify.) My question is: which firms/sectors/business practices produce the biggest externalities in either a good or bad direction? [link] [comments] |

Peace Corps is offering me an opportunity to purchase bonds. Should I do it? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 01:53 PM PST After my service I am given a readjustment allowance. With that money I can have a monthly deduction of up to $150 during my service to purchase savings bonds. I know how savings bonds works and that they are a safe investmemt but would it be worth it? Does it mean each month that is deducted I have to have a 5 or 7 year term? I would like to be able to make some money but is it worth it or not. I know they don't accrue much after jist one year but I will only be gone 2 years. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 07 Jan 2018 01:56 PM PST If the market were to collapse and you had $100000 in index funds, what happens to your money? Is it just worth less if you were to pull it out? Would you start making money again when the market starts going back up? Could someone explain this scenario for me. [link] [comments] |
Stops as a defense against a crash? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 08:50 PM PST As this frothy bull market continues, I'm feeling the greed and exuberance out there. It's making me nervous and I find myself thinking more and more about making a shift to be more defensive. It's been a hell of a ride. I've considered buying broad puts, but as they say, the market can stay irrational longer than I can remain solvent, right? Another strategy I've been considering is to put stops in place on some or several of my larger key positions, and moving them up even daily, as needed. A few problems this presents: If my stops hit but it was just a dip, well I'll probably want to come back in and I"ll be looking at short-term capital gains if it happens twice. Also, if my stops hit on a dip several times I could take repeated incremental losses. Finally, I suppose I wouldn't really know when or if to get back in. Obviously nobody knows what the market will do each day, but I applied this strategy to my cannabis holdings and I ended up out after Sessions actions last week, and now I'm feeling some of that FOMO as that sector quickly recovers. Has anyone considered this strategy as a defense against a crash or correction? I'd be very interested to hear other thoughts about it, or other advantages or disadvantages that I have not considered. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:42 PM PST Sooooo, what's stopping me from using Robinhood for all the free trades I want, say up to an account of 10k and then just transfer into a major brokerage for long term security? The major brokerage will cover any transfer fee. Rinse, wash, repeat. [link] [comments] |
Any common mistakes when buying ETFs like IVV, ITOT, IXUS etc? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 01:57 PM PST Making a portfolio with IVV, ITOT, IXUS, AGG with all of them at 25%, I've never bought an ETF before, I've read about ETFs but I was wondering if there were any beginner mistakes I should avoid. For example, should I buy them now (as in, sunday) or should I wait till Monday when the market is open. And should I use a limit order? And these ETFs are similar to some mutual funds but those have higher expense ratios? I didn't really see why that would be [link] [comments] |

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 01:35 AM PST Ok guys, so I own shares in a couple of tech stocks but I want to diversify my portfolio and pharma/biotech cought my attention especially Teva. They have massive debt and are in one of their worse crisis since the company founded but my speculation is that they probably won't go down any further. Plus, under this administration drug prices are likely to go higher (in the US at least so that's a plus). What do you guys think? Is it a long term buy or will the company close down? Posted: 08 Jan 2018 01:29 AM PST I own three duplexes with loans around 3 to 4.5 interest as well as a car loan around the same and a few student loans. Does it make sense for me to buy long term stocks like Visa before I pay off my debts? What is a good rule of thumb for this scenario? Where is the cut off some of these student loans have highish interest. [link] [comments] |

Could you recommend a book on nature of money and banking system? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 06:03 PM PST Could anyone recommend a book on the nature of money, such as the origin of fiat currency and how currency is evolving (cryptocurrency), and on banking (including the fractional-reserve banking)? I would like a book that is as objective as possible. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
How many ETFs should I buy with $1,000? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 08:00 PM PST I'm opening a Robinhood account so I don't have to deal with fees, but I also have a TD account that's set up, too. I don't know how many ETFs I should get to start. I'm fairly certain I'm interested in IJR, a small-cap, blend ETF. I keep researching but there's not too much info I can find on the number of and how to properly diversify ETFs (compared to the amount of info on individual stocks). I heard that ETFs more than half of the time outperform a custom stock portfolio anyway, even with lots of research. So, how many do you think I should buy? [link] [comments] |
How to make money from European instability? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:22 PM PST When the migrant crisis first happened, I never thought that all those people will need a place to live, which made housing prices go way up. It is just something that slipped my mind. Also, food prices or food production probably went up as well. Farmers were probably very happy. Anyway, suppose that these migrants create stress on the current systems, what would be a good investment? If the EU collapses, what would be a good investment? I am not suggesting this will happen, but I just want to ponder over it. [link] [comments] |

Comparing DCA: daily vs weekly vs monthly Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:16 PM PST I wrote some code today to compare daily vs weekly vs monthly Dollar cost averaging. It seems like it does not seem to make a difference that much, has anyone else tried doing the math too? Some examples, (I tried many other years including dreaded 2008) [link] [comments] |
