[Update]NYC. Frozen pipes in bathroom 3 days in a week, no toliet, sink (bathroom only) or shower water. Can I ask for a reduce in rent?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 09:24 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I got lots of good feedback, so I justed wanted to share the result. I emailed the management company the following:

For the last three days, our water pipes have frozen leaving us with no water for most part of the days. When the plumber came in, he noted that the bathroom is very cold (it has no heat!) which is causing the pipes to freeze. He advised us to leave the water dripping to avoid overnight freezing, which we followed. As a result, we now only have hot water on tap and in the shower with no cold water and no water in the toliet. While leaving the tap dripping is a stopgap solution, I am very worried about the water situation in the future, when the cold will get worse. It is obviously irrational to assume that the plumber will be available every time the water stops pouring at midnight. On top of that, of course, is the inconvenience and distress of having to live in a house with a bathroom with no or at best, scanty water.

I request you to look into this recurring problem and perhaps suggest a way to compensate for the distress my partner and I have been undergoing through the last few days. Our monthly rent is $2623, which brings our daily rent to $84.61; we'd like to be compensated for the three days we havent had water ($253.84) and for the consequent days the problem persists.

We plan on paying rent today, and look forward to hearing of a solution from you soon.

They got back to us today and credited $350 to our account. After the above email, we were out of water the following day as well. The plumbers pretty much spent 8 hours in our building making fixes. Shortly after this, they shut off water/heat for the entire building and made additional fixes to the boiler. Whatever they did has helped a lot, as our apartment as been toasty ever since, with no water problems.

A lot of redditors gave the helpful suggestion of running a drip to prevent pipes from freezing. A+ advice.

Thanks to everyone and take care.

[US] Lying as a reference on a Security Clearance background check?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 07:29 AM PST

I live around DC, in Virginia, so a lot of my friends are getting security clearances in order to go into Government contracting jobs. I've done a few interviews as a reference for background checks, and I've always been candid.

However, one friend recently told me that I may be contacted to do the interview, and specifically asked me to lie for him.

I've known this guy since middle school, and know that for a few years he partied pretty hard with various drugs/alcohol. Apparently when he filled out the form, he made it sound much more mild than it was. He asked me to withhold information to match what he put down.

The worst part is that he's been clean and responsible for many years now, and as I understand it, they're pretty forgiving of past partying during the background checks. But they definitely aren't forgiving of folks lying on their forms.

Right now I'm thinking I'll just lie for him. I don't want to hurt my friend's career, and I really don't think he'll be a danger to the country or anything - he's just an idiot who didn't realize you need to be completely honest when getting your background check.

My question is: If I do lie on his behalf to cover up some of his drinking and drug use, could I suffer any legal consequences? If so, what is the likelihood of that happening?

Sent to ER by improperly inserted IUD (USA/PA)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 08:27 AM PST

USA/Pennsylvania, F/27. This happened last night. I'll try and make the lead-up story/details brief, but I think they're important.

My husband and I have insurance through the ACA (neither of us were offered insurance through work at the time), as that was our only option. Last year, we had good insurance but were notified in November it would be going up over $400 for 2018, making it more than our rent and we could barely afford what we were already paying. His job offered him enough hours to make it so he could get their health insurance, but we couldn't afford the option that would cover us both. This meant he'd be able to get insurance through work, but I'd need individual insurance through the Marketplace/ACA and all I could afford was a terrible plan with a $6100 deductible, but we figured at least the cost per month was way cheaper than the penalty for having no insurance.

All this to say that since my Mirena IUD was due to be replaced in 2018, I decided to call my gyno and ask to have it done asap so I could have it covered by the good insurance while I still had it. They agreed and got me in for Dec 14, 2017. Went in and while they took the Mirena out fine, the doctor kept hemming and hawing over how my uterus was apparently measuring smaller than what was in my records. I was a bit frustrated as she was taking forever and the process is not comfortable, so when she suggested getting a Skyla instead, I said fine. She put it in and sent me on my way.

(some TMI coming, sorry). So now January has hit, I have my new, shitty insurance that covers nothing until the deductible has met, and two nights ago I'm at work and get hit with the worst cramps of my life. I figured 'okay, new IUD, body is just not used to it'. Took some Midol and went to bed when I got home. Woke up yesterday morning (Jan 5th, 2018) with ungodly pain and when I went to the bathroom, I literally was all but gushing red blood and tissue. This continued for hours with me bleeding through feminine products every 20 minutes while I was freaking out trying to figure out what to do since, with the new insurance and only about $2000 to our names, I knew we'd be screwed by doctor bills. Gyno office wouldn't return my calls, so I called my family doc and they told us to go to the ER immediately.

Went and long story short is after almost 6 hours in Triage of the Women & Babies Hospital, they found my IUD had been very improperly placed and was causing the severe pain and bleeding; on top of that, they said it was in no way preventing pregnancy either. For anyone who doesn't know, it's supposed to be at the top of the uterus, but this one was put at the very bottom and the strings were almost non-existent. The doctor documented this and told me I needed to let the gyno know they screwed up and get them to cover the cost and get me a new IUD for no cost.

My question is who I seek out for this kind of thing. I don't know what kind of lawyer covers this and with our lack of money (I had spine surgery in May and it wiped out our savings) I can't afford the medical bills, but also not a lawyer. I went out of my way to get the IUD taken care of while it was still covered and never would have been in the ER if not for the doctor messing up, plus now I can't afford a new IUD or birth control. I'm trying to find a Planned Parenthood, but there's only one in the area and it's very hard to get there for me.

TL;DR - Gyno misplaced IUD, causing severe pain and bleeding a few weeks later and it sent me to the ER where I will be billed for everything.

USPS Employee. Myself & Another Demoted 2 Grades and Garnished the $20k Difference. I want to bring suit against my employer & the Union

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 07:37 AM PST

So myself and another co-worker were hired about 2 years ago into the postal service off the street. We had to take an entrance test for the level 7,9 and 10 positions. We passed the test to include a high enough score for Lvl-10. We were then refused interviews for Lvl-10 positions despite there being vacant jobs. We were interviewed (which in the USPS is just another structured test) for Lvl-7 positions and passed. After maybe 6-9 months of asking, we finally were given interviews for Lvl-10 positions and passed them. Both of us moved to another shift to take vacant Lvl-10 positions.

Fast forward about 1.25 years, a Lvl-7 Union-member employee files grievances saying that our jobs aren't valid because she failed the qualification test for Lvl-10 twice and was denied an interview. The supposed reasoning is because the Union says we should have been required to take the test again before getting interviewed for Lvl-10 positions after having already been hired as Lvl-7's. According to them (Union) this is all clerical error on the part of our USPS management.

So as of yesterday we were told that we'll be demoted back to Lvl-7's, lose our seniority we've built, have to move to whichever shift management desires, AND be sent " Letters of Demand" to re-coup the $20k difference in pay we've EARNED since being promoted to Lvl-10 positions and working those for the last 1.25 years.

No one in the Union likes my coworker or myself because we refuse to join, they've made that clear. My next move is to bring suit against my attackers but I'm not sure how. Apparently the USPS is given immunity from suits in law? Not sure if the Union is. Will be calling attorneys Monday. Any advice, especially from anyone who's sued Unions or the USPS management from an employee's position, would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Edit The way the Union works @ USPS is they're required to represent members & non-members and the terms of the Union contract with the USPS apply to everyone

Moved out of apartment with 12 month lease early

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 08:34 AM PST

Sorry if this is a little all over the place, I am still very upset by this news. So I just moved out of a college town apartment (3 bedrooms with attached bath, shared common area) for $550 a month in NC. Each time I have signed the lease it has been a 6 month lease, just to cover the semester. However, this last lease I signed was suddenly a 12 month lease and I didn't realize it. Looked back at the fine print and sure enough, I'm financially responsible until July. I know I was very very stupid not to double check, don't worry I'm beating myself up about it plenty. However, the apartment business is causing some problems too. I had called them multiple times to ask when the lease was up, but they never answer their phones. I left voicemails as well. The apartment manager told me I was good to move out just turn in my keys (in an email which I kept). I turned in my keys, and a move out inspection was not performed which I thought was odd. Later I was informed that the manager never got the keys that I turned in to the front office. They recommend that I sublet, however I can not take pictures of the apartment because they lost my keys. What are my options here? What will happen if I don't pay? They recommend subletting but that's a 250$ subletting fee, and the spring semester is almost starting so most everyone has housing. Advice is very much appreciated!

Edit: I have already settled in a new house with a 1-year lease

(US) Unsure of my child's legal name.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 10:36 AM PST

My ex (Ms. Smith) and I (Mr. Doe) could not agree on whether our child's last name should my name or a combination of hers and mine. We discussed our son having two middle names, "Smith" being in the middle name or having two last names "Smith-Doe".

The birth certificate has just a single name field that says: "John Lee Smith Doe". Now our son has "Doe" on some documents, school records, etc and "Smith Doe" on some things.

No document has a "-" in the last name field.

My ex and myself's inability to agree have caused this quagmire that I feel ashamed of :(

I want to make sure we are not causing him future problems for when he gets out of high school.

Can he just use "Smith Doe" from now on? He has that on his drivers license. We could update his school records to match. My concern is there may be some government documents, like social security, that have his last name as just "Doe".

pretty much every gov document I have seen just has the full "John Lee Smith Doe". So I don't know how they break out the last name.

Is this a serious problem? If so, any suggestions on how to fix?

I want to fix this mess that I helped make :(

A guy pointed a gun at my dad’s head in a Walmart parking lot but pressing charges on my dad.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 10:55 AM PST

    Location: Missouri

So my parents were going to a Walmart where they had the right of way to take a turn. This guy didn't have the right of way but tried to cut him off and hit my parents. The guy started to follow my parents car until they parked. My mom went into Walmart while my dad went to the guy truck to ask him what was the problem since he was just circling around the car.

The guy had been yelling and cussing my dad. My dad did not yell nor cuss. The dude then pulled a gun to my dad's head. My dad was able to swat the gun out of his hand. Police were called BY my dad and both were sitting in separate cop cars until they viewed security tapes. (Everything was seen on tape)

Now, the other is pressing charges on my dad for "feeling threaten," which is pretty pathetic for a guy holding the gun. But also, my dad is pressing charges for obvious reasons. However, the cops say that they were both in the wrong and my dad shouldn't walk to his vehicle because it's illegal (even though this happen in a public parking lot).

So how is this okay? When did it become okay to point a gun at someone head in a public area and accuse them? The cops also seem to not care that a guy pulled a gun out either. I guess what I'm asking, how is this legal?

Help with a grandparents rights situation.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 04:36 AM PST

Ok sorry for the long post in advance. I live in ohio. My son is 5 years old his father and I were never married. I am the legal guardian. We had a visitation schedule made in 2013. His father never liked me so I tried to allow him to be involved with Grayson via his parents. The grandparents lied to me and hd me believing when he went there he was seeing his father but just didn't want to communicate with me directly. After an incident in september of 2016 I told them I wanted to deal with his father directly because it was inappropriate for them to demand information about his school drs appointments etc. They gave me his email address and for over a year Ive been emailing The father to come to a visitation agreement, answer questions about or schedules etc. Several times he threatened to take me back to court. So i November I filed for a modification of our parenting time schedule. I put the fathers last known address but wasn't sure if it was current so I thought it was due diligence to let him know over email as well. Well 2 weeks ago he messaged me on facebook to ask if my husband wanted to adopt Grayson because he didn't have a relationship with him and didn't care to. I asked why he had been emailing me for almost 2 years, and threatening me with court as well as emailig or son's preschool every week asking for attendance, school records, and trying to get medical records. He asked What email?? We found out his parents made a fake email and pretended to be him for almost 2 years. We went to the pretrial last week (I have no lawyer) and when I got there I was served papers from the paternal grandparents for a motion to intervene and they were allowed in our court trial. The father waved his rights to any parenting time even going as far as telling the judge he doesn't love his son. The grandparents are demanding pretty much his visiations hes giving up. I know the courts determine visiations based o several factors. THe issue I have is they can prove a prior relationship with my child. They can do so only because of their elaborate lies, I was under the impression that his father was their with him. I don't believe it is in my son's best interest to have visiting time with them because of how untrustworthy they are, and how much information they demand to know eve if they have no rights to that information. Also my husband is planning to adopt my son so I don't think its i his best interest because he wont legaly be their grandchild anymore.

[TX] Can I call the police if my roommate locks me out of the apartment?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:30 PM PST

First of all, the rooms are individually leased so we both have a lease.

We both have a key to the front door, but the inside of the door has a deadbolt with no way to unlock it from the outside.

I got back and found that the deadbolt was locked and spent about twenty minutes banging on the door. The ONLY way that lock could be engaged is if she was already in the apartment. I proceeded to use a relay service (I'm deaf) to call her cell phone about a dozen times. Around the 5th time it started going straight to voicemail, meaning she turned calling off on her phone. Meaning she was awake and knew I was at the door and was actively ignoring me.

My mom was in the car with me and eventually just got her number and texted her. She unlocked it only after my mom texted her, meaning she was very obviously going to leave me stranded outside in 30 degree weather with no means of transportation (I don't have a car here, I take public transit and the buses aren't running at 1AM)

My question is - can I call the cops on her if this happens again? Is this illegal and is there anything she could be charged with?

I'm severely disabled, but I look relatively normal. She's been belligerent and patronizing, and eventually I just had to err on the side of being a complete bitch any time she talked to me to get it to stop. She doesn't think I'm actually as sick as I've told her I am (which, I look like a normal 20 year old. I have brain and spinal tumors) - all of this is just social issues, but I've already talked to the front office about it and they were willing to find me a new room, but the apartment I'm currently in is the only ADA compliant room available. Is there any way someone creating an extremely hostile environment and showing dangerous behavior (not taking me seriously regarding my disabilities and locking me outside in 30 degree weather and then ignoring me when I was trying to get in) could be moved rather than me.

As in, is there any legal way they could move her since I need the ADA compliant room and her behavior has been insane.

What can I do to get her to move, because I not only can't, but shouldn't have to considering there are not other ADA compliant rooms available.

I don't feel safe rooming with her, and the stress is actively making my health worse. I really need help but I'm not sure what to do and I don't think I CAN do anything and feel hopeless.

Also, as far as the lock goes - I'm deaf and if I were to use the lock no one would be able to get in. I wouldn't know someone was at the door, and if I were asleep or something I wouldn't see my phone going off. Is there legally anything I can do about the lock? It's REALLY not fair that she can use something that I absolutely can't despite us residing in the same apartment.

[FL] Unmarried father is currently intubated and has end-stage liver failure. Power of attorney questions. No living will, no previous POA designated.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 03:50 AM PST

My father has cirrhosis. Liver and kidneys are failing. Last night in ICU they looked to me for the decision to intubate or go to comfort care. I said intubate to get everyone here to say goodbye if things worsen further. It's unclear if he will be lucid enough again to make his own decisions (his condition is causing confusion and he's currently sedated).

My question is, will his medical decisions only be up to me and my brother? We are 21 and 20 respectively. As mentioned he is divorced. My aunt (his half sister) checked him into the ER, but he didn't sign anything saying she was to make his decisions. She is a meddler, so I want more info on if it's only up to me and my brother if/when crap hits the fan.

[UK] Debt collectors are after me for £4900 on behalf of a company I have never knowingly been involved with. They are threatening court and I don’t know what to do.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 04:48 AM PST

Huge thanks in advance for any advice.

In 2016 I signed up for accommodation through my university. I was placed in a house with five others for 11 months. Utility bills were not included in the rent. We never got any utility bills through the post and assumed payment of the bills would be done through the university at the end of the year.

It is now five months after I have moved out. I have received a bill from debt collectors stating that an investigation has been done and they have concluded that I am responsible for paying the utility bills for the house. Others living in the house have not received this letter.

I have never signed my name up with the electricity/gas company that is saying I owe them money and I am unsure how they got my information. I have now received a final demand. I don't see how they can hold me solely responsible for the bills of a six-person house when I never signed up with them. I received the first letter several weeks ago but have only just returned after the Christmas holidays and I have received a final demand too. How can they pass the bill on to debt collectors (who have add another >£1000 of fees) without any correspondence with us at all?

Should I contact the debt collectors?

What will happen when I inevitably can't pay?

Why did we not receive any bills during the tenancy?! The first bill we have received about the utility payments is from a debt collector and the debt collectors have included an extra "administration charge" of over £1000.

    What should I do?

TLDR: debt collectors holding me solely accountable for the utility bills of a company I never signed up for on a house I rented with 5 others.

I am willing to pay what I owe, but I simply cannot pay for the other 5 too + the extra £1000 administrative feeds the debt collectors have added.

Can the police refuse medical attention to a head wound?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 10:18 AM PST

    Location: Washington State

Short story to keep it simple. I had a head injury, could not remember where or how. I was lost and confused. I asked people to call emergency services in which they refused. Eventually someone did and when the police found me I was lost and had no glasses. I asked them to call the medics, they saw that I had a head wound and said they would. They put on some gloves and arrested me for something I don't believe I did and would not normally do. They kept me in a holding tank for a day while I kept requesting medical attention. Eventually, a few days, they dropped all charges with no conditions of release with the right to charge me on a later date. During the situation they had tazed my hands and arms multiple times, hogtied me and carried me by the hogtie. Now my hands are numb with a cold shooting sensation at times with position and movement, and sometimes itchiness that can't be scratched away. I also had a large amount of cryptocoins in my possession that were mine and I had declared it so they would keep it safe, but those eneded up missing and they deny everything about them, but I remeber seeing them pull it out from my pockets and dumping my belongings on the ground. I am now afraid to deal with them, I had called their superiors and made a complaint, but all they did was have the arresting officers call me back and tried to flip it on me. I don't want to see or hear from those thieving abusive bastards and don't know what to do. The main question is: Is it legal for them to deny me medical to an obvious head wound that left blood everywhere?

[Update] I moved into an apartment in horrible condition. Landlord said he would fix it up before I moved in but never did. More issues. [Upstate New York]

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 07:53 AM PST

Previous post TL;DR: Apartment I moved into was filthy, had roaches, broken door leading outside that doesn't close, place was basically unlivable. When I looked at it, he said it was a work in progress and it would be fixed up before he'd give me the keys but he didn't. The mess and broken door

So after talking to the landlord, it seemed like he was willing to work with me and fix the place up. He agreed to not charge me rent until Jan 1st, said he would hire an exterminator and cleaning crew, and would get the door fixed.

-He did get an exterminator about a week later. By that point I had already done what I could to take care of the roach problem. The "exterminator" (I'm not entirely sure he did hire one, I think he did this himself. I was not home) just put a couple traps put. They've done absolutely nothing, not one roach has been caught. The only thing that worked was what I did to take care of it.

-A week after that, he hired a woman to come clean. By that point, I had moved in most of my stuff and cleaned most of the place myself. I had to move in, and I couldn't really live in that condition. And with the way that it needed to be cleaned, it just wouldn't be possible to do with all my stuff moved in. So I just had her deep clean the kitchen. She even said something about the state of the place. Said something like "he said he had this place cleaned before you moved in but I hope he didn't pay them because it doesn't look like it's been cleaned in years."

-The door is still broken. This is a major issue. If you didn't read the post or look at the pictures- there is flimsy door with a flimsy sliding lock that leads to a room that used to be a porch. The door leading outside is broken and doesn't shut all the way, the locks are broken and the door doesn't even fit. Here's the issues with that- I live in a pretty sketchy area. Example- everytime I've had a package delivered, they've been opened by someone that (I assume) is looking for something worth stealing. And a couple weeks ago, I was pulled over after leaving my apartment by two cops who questioned me about what I was doing. They assumed I was leaving a drug deal because apparently there's a lot of drug dealers on my street. So as you can imagine, I'm a little nervous about how easy it is to break in. I'm a small woman. To add, it's been around 0-10°f the last couple weeks, so because of the broken door, it's freezing in my apartment. I don't pay heat so I can't control it. I can't use my living room because of how cold it is in there. I've asked about the door multiple times, and am met with "sorry, I've been very busy during the holidays."

-And the reason for the update today- I had a small fire catch from a candle (I know I'm a dumbass) and the only reason I noticed was because I smelled the smoke. None of the smoke alarms went off, and the room was completely filled with smoke. I texted him about this today, and he told me that he had all the smoke detectors replaced before I moved in. I'm sure I should have checked this when I moved in, but I didn't think of it. Now I know, I guess.

So, there's my update. I don't know what to do at this point. I can't exactly leave and demand my money back, can I? I haven't paid rent yet, and told him that I am waiting for the door to be fixed. He said it was fine that I'll be late.

Please give me some wisdom here. And please save the lectures, I've never dealt with something like this before. I don't have the money to just say "fuck it" and find a new place.

Can I withhold rent until the door is fixed?

Looking story short, I inherited a home. I found a safety deposit box key. I have no knowledge or experience with this. Are they for life? My Grandfather has been dead 6 years. Do I need to know anything? Do I just go to the bank? It has the box number with it

    Excessive Roach Problem

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 08:27 AM PST

Hello. Looking for some advice best plan of action. I moved into a condo End of May 2017. Around July '17 started seeing German cockroaches. The condo next to me was a corporate rental and the person left suddenly and left food and other items still in the unit. The unit is still vacant 1/2018 not sure if the stuff was cleaned up or not. I have went to the leasing office numerous times and complained. They send pest control out almost every Monday (sometimes they forget to come) but I have documented maintenance report of most of the visits. It is now January and I still have roach issues. I've followed all instructions (cleaning out cabinets, using soap, allowing access from pest control, cleaning up dead roaches, redoing traps etc.). I even had to replace my microwave due to infestation. How long do I have to put up with this? It's been almost 6months and they have not remedied the issue? I am tired of paying $1,800/month to live with bugs. My gf and 1 year old daughter are fed up as well.

Looking for advice on how to handle legally? I have meeting with leasing office next week 1/11 and want to know my options if they do not give me full confidence that it will be fixed.

    Thanks,

Dropped a copy of new lease off at leasing office; don't have a signed copy; now concerned landlord might want me to leave at the end of the month

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 08:25 AM PST

    Edit: Location is Connecticut

This is most likely a premature post, but I would like a bit of advice on a contingency situation that I'm concerned about.

My current lease expires 2018-01-31, I dropped off a signed copy of my lease renewal on 2017-12-22, and the manager of my apartment complex told me verbally that she would mail me back a copy of my signed lease. I haven't yet gotten a signed copy, and in the meantime I've gotten a new downstairs neighbor that seems to be quite a complainer about noise. My concern is that my landlord is going to take the path of least resistance and force me to leave; and I don't have a signed copy of the lease to counter that with.

Relevant (at least I think) information:

    • The new tenants below me have complained to my landlord at least once about noise, specifically citing "heavy walking". My landlord called about 2 weeks ago, I told her I would be conscious of it, and we left it there. They (the new downstairs neighbor) have since put up a sign in the hallway reading "Please be quiet". I have never spoken in person to them past saying hello when they move in. I'm guessing I haven't heard the last of this.
    • I have been in my apartment since 2014-12-26. This is the third tenant in the apartment below me, and none of the other tenants have ever had an issue with how I walk. I believe the tenants below me came from a house previously (they left a foreclosure notice on the stairs, so I'm guessing their house was foreclosed on and they moved into a rather small first floor apartment) and they are a bit overly noise sensitive, not having shared walls previously.
    • The only person aside from me that is here with any regularity is my girlfriend, but she is only here a couple of nights a week at the most and does not live here. I do not believe I make any excessive noise (no loud TV or music, I don't exercise in my apartment, I don't have parties, don't drop things, etc)
    • During my last lease renewal, I negotiated a month to month lease. This was their standard lease, indicating things such as that my rent couldn't be raised during the term and such, but included an additional clause specifying that I could leave with 30 days notice as long as my rent was paid up and that there was a $25/mo surcharge for this option.
    • My lease has verbiage in it that they do not allow tenants to stay in the apartment past the end of the lease, and specifies a daily rate (approximately 3x higher than the rent) if a tenant does not vacate at the end of the lease term.

    • I have copies of the following documents:

      • The lease that they mailed me, with a typo that the lease is from February 1, 2018 to January 31, 2018. In the copy I gave back to them, I crossed out 2018, wrote 2019, initialed it and pointed it out to the manager when I dropped the lease off. She had no objections.
      • A signed letter from them indicating what my new rent will be, should I choose to renew.
      • Emails and an additional signed letter about retaining my month-to-month status and that the fee would continue to be $25/month for my lease from 2018-02-01 through 2019-01-31
      • An email back from my landlord, indicating that she got my notice to renew, thanking me for renewing, and indicating that she will get the lease to me.

I sent my landlord an email on Thursday requesting a signed copy of the lease that I dropped off on 2017-12-22, but I have not yet gotten a response.

If my landlord wants me gone due to the downstairs tenants complaining, I would probably leave without putting up much of a stink, but I don't particularly want to do that in the middle of a Connecticut winter. If it should come to that (and I personally doubt it will, but want to have my bases covered), how concerned do I need to be about not having a signed copy of the lease in light of having a copy of the unsigned lease, and all the supporting documentation I have that they intended to renew my lease? Is this something that I should have a lawyer look over now, or would that be premature?

I think my next step is, on Monday to call and again request a signed copy of my lease. If I don't have one by Thursday, I think I'll send a certified letter. Do those seem like reasonable next steps?

    Thank you much.

People in my apartments leave their dog outside constantly. Can I do anything about it? (TX)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 11:27 AM PST

So these people who live across from me in my apartment complex have a very cute little beagle. Every time I'm ever outside and have to walk past their patio, it's outside. I've lived here for 6 months and I've never seen them take it in. Whether it's super hot or freezing cold. I'm convinced they've never brought this dog inside. It never barks, so it's not a noise thing. It's just really, really sad. You never see it being taken for walks or anything. It just stays outside, on the patio, 24/7. It looks really sad. It doesn't wag its tail or get up when you walk by or talk to it. My dog tries to interact with it and it just goes back in its little kennel they leave outside. The owners even let him pee and poop out there and don't clean it up. I just walked by and there were like 5 piles of poop and the concrete is discolored from the urine. It actually stinks when you walk by. I'm genuinely worried about the safety and well-being of the dog. It's been pretty cold here recently. Can I go to the office of my apartments and complain? Can they even legally enforce anything?? I'm just really sad for this dog. It doesn't seem to have a loving home. :(

[Non-USA] The legality of references in video games

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 12:53 PM PST

Good day! My question is quite specific; and if you cannot give a proper response that's fully understandable.

I'm currently working on an indiegame; with the intention of selling it down the line and in said games you can buy and equip different hats. I thought a hat like so: http://i67.tinypic.com/dop34x.png Would be quite nice, but since this is a reference to Super Mario I'm a bit worrysome about them having the legal right to straight up sue me, considering them being a tad bit... triggerhappy. Does this only apply if I reference Super Mario by name- or is the likeness enough to get me into trouble?

[On, Canada] Legalities of working in cold temps? With crappy drawing done on my crappy phone

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 10:00 AM PST

Sorry for any crappiness in this post. Everything has been done on mobile.

I work for a for profit thrift store in the back production area where we sort through the tens of thousands of donations recieved weekly. Its a shitty job with shitty managers but the hours and benefits are decent and it's close to home.

As everyone must know, we are experiencing extreme cold weather with temps dipping into the -35C to -40C. We're in a polar vortex at the moment i believe.

Usually work is tolerable with a little extra clothing and thick socks and the temp usually staysbetween 15 and 20 in the winter. This week has been something else. With the temps outside and wind, we've been working in 3 to 4 degrees. Even with uggs (yes I know they're called uggs for a reason) borrowed from my teenaged daughter, thermal socks on, jacket and a scarf and mitts all while working indoors we were all frozen. Shivering, feet numb, noses running, you get the picture.

Management is saying that because we have a door leading to the outside that needs to be open most of the time and we're "technically" a warehouse, we are exempt from the temperature by-laws which from what I read is 18 and above.

Is this really legal? I'm in a position where I can quit and sit on my ass if i really want, but there are people there who absolutely need the job and can't speak up.

    Here is my crappy drawing.

    https://imgur.com/gallery/F1BbTOw

The dark green doors are the ones that are open most of the time to allow people to drop off donations. The gray loading dock door is open for hours on end when we recieved shipments from other charities we pay for their donated clothing.

In between the donation centre and warehouse/production area, there are those plastic door things that you see in grocery stores and such between the meat departments to keep cold contained. It doesn't work when temps are so cold.

Thanks for taking the time to read!
