Purchased a laptop from a guy on craigslist and found CP on it. I am being told that calling the police is a bad idea because I am the one in posession of it.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:10 AM PST

Basically the title. Bought the laptop from the dude at his home in his drive way. After 2 hours I found the CP on it and shut it down immediately. I wanted to call the police but I am being told that that is a terrible idea as the Texas law regarding it is stupid as fuck. They said that I would be the one charged as I am the one in possession of it and that the creator of it would face separate charges.

Am I going to have to get an attorney for this or is there a way I can report this without one? I am pretty broke and can not afford even 100s for a consultation fee.

Is my friend right in that I would be fucked if I called the police?

EDIT: I just got back from the police. I am not going to provide many details here other than I am not in trouble, so far, and that I only gave information about how long I had the laptop, how long it was before I found the CP, and handed over copies of all documentation. I had my old cell phone on me and recorded the audio of what happened on it for CYA.

I was tempted to just wipe the device when I first found it as I felt like I did not want to lose the 200 I paid for it. Yes selfish I know but at that point I did not care. My conscience got the better of me though. The police have it now and I have records of everything in case they decide to bust down my door over this.

State of Georgia asking me for child support on kids my ex wife had while we were separated (15yrs) with 2 other men while I lived 2000 miles away. Help.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 09:22 AM PST

My ex and I were married many years ago in Tennessee. Separated after a few years and I have not seen her since 2000. She has 2 kids in Georgia during the next 17 years. We officially divorced last year and in the papers it states that she gets nothing from me for the kids, since they were not mine. She has never claimed they were mine. The state of Georgia is now saying I may owe a ridiculously large amount of child support (kids are 5 and 8). Will a simple DNA test settle this? The ex is actually trying to get the kids back from her mother who has custody of them for some reason. It was my stupidity for not getting the divorce years ago, but I was traveling alot and just never did the paperwork. Any advice or thoughts from experience would be greatly appreciated.

Is my grandma legally responsible for weed a neighbor might be growing secretly on her land?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:43 AM PST

So this is in Louisiana. My grandma owns some acres of land in the middle of the woods. Some of this land runs behind a family's house down the road. These people have been known to sell but aren't currently in jail. They have been caught cooking meth and growing weed before and my grandma is thinking they might be using her land to do it. Her land is fenced in but in some places the fencing has fallen due to it being old. We're going to go take our side by side up to where we think it might be, but if we find something what should we do? We have a deer cam so we could potentially set it up to show them tending to it. Is she going to face negative consequences since it's her land they're using? She wants to call the police if we find anything but I wanted to know what we're facing. Thank you!

[NY][FINAL UPDATE] Someone stole my wife's mail with credit card and spent $1500 yesterday

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 01:44 PM PST

    1st post https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/7g4uzu/someone_stole_my_wifes_mail_with_credit_card_and/

    2nd post https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/7gvnwz/nyupdate_someone_stole_my_wifes_mail_with_credit/

I saw a whole bunch of news vans around my local post office. I looked up what happened and they caught the person who stole at least more than 30 credit cards. He was a mail carrier and was stealing cards for 8 months. He had 5 6 random credit cards on him when he was arrested. His wife, NYPD safety officer was in this as well. I told my wife to call the prosecutor district attorney and tell her story.

Up to 15 years for him and 7 years for her if convicted.

Glad they are gone from my local post office.

Thanks for the resources to contact the postal inspectors. I'm sure other residents have done the same which led to his arrest.

Edits: News articles increase the credit cards he had. The worker activated the cards by going through the dark web and spent bitcoins to get information on the credit card holder. Source:News article

[FL] Police called to say my stolen guitar showed up in a pawn shop. They want cash and will not release the guitar to me. What's my time investment if I want to take them to court?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 08:07 AM PST

I paid $300 for the guitar in 2014, it was stolen Nov 2016, showed up today. I have a picture of the serial so no question it's mine. The person who called from the cops asked a few basic questions, then called the pawn store, and then called back to say they want $200 for it. She kinda made out like it might be more hassle than $200 is worth to me, but I think it would be a good return if the process is only 2-3 hours. Edit: my insurance already paid out so getting the guitar would be a bonus. I'm not suggesting I pay $200 for the guitar, I'm saying I get a $200 guitar of I take them to court. Edit2: as the trolls are rolling in now, I've got it in writing that the insurance company don't want either items or money back if any of my stolen items are recovered.

She also originally offered to go to the pawn shop with me to inspect the item, guessing this is a better idea than going alone? I'd want to go anyway to find out if any other items were sold. It's been a while so almost certainly the guitar changed hands a few times, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Lastly, how long would this process take overall, and if I want to find out my local (orlando) process for this, what am I searching for? I've seen in other areas of FL you have to buy the item and then take the shop to cost to get that money back.

I was in a viral "prank" video without my permission.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 12:04 PM PST

A few months ago I was in a popular park having a drink with a friend before going to a show and suddenly a fight between a guy and girl breaks out next to me. The guy is beating up the girl, so I hopped the roped fence and then broke up the fight. Exchanged a few words with the guy and made sure the girl was protected. A few minutes later, three guys shout from far away with cameras saying, "Thanks! You did the right thing! It was a prank!"

Essentially, a what would you do?-style situation.

I was annoyed and went on with my evening, recounted the story to friends, and then forgot about it. Fast forward a few weeks and someone posts the video on my wall, "Is this you?" and it's me helping the girl/confronting the guy. The entire video was a compilation of this couple getting into physical altercations with each other in public and seeing if people step in. Then the video goes on to talk about violence against men and basically becomes an MRA video and everyone in the comments is calling me a "femnazi" because of the way I spoke to the guy. (Context: the guy said, "Why is she talking to other dudes?" and I said, "Because she's an independent woman and can do what she wants.")

Anyway, this has 7 million views in less than 2 days, it got picked up by Good Morning America. I'm on national TV unknowingly and annoyingly. I want no part of this ~men's rights~ style video because 1. They didn't get my permission and 2. I disagree with their ethics.

So, what can I do? I don't want this video out there.

[KY] Neighbor backed out of driveway hitting my car. Insurance denied liability.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:18 AM PST

I was driving down my neighborhood when my neighbor's truck backed into the passenger side of my car. A police report was made but unfortunately, I didn't get pictures of the accident at the time because I was a bit in shock. I do have pictures of the damages though. I made a statement with their insurance earlier recounting the incident, hoping that they would help in covering the cost. My car has about $5000 in damages and their insurance won't pay for it, stating that the accident was my fault.

My insurance at the time won't cover damages for my car, so I'm left having to cover the cost myself. I spoke to my neighbor and he also denies fault, saying that I ran into his car. I am wondering if I should just go to small claims to sort this out. Thanks!

Doctor put wrong figure on the final bill at discharge from hospital and they now want us to pay the extra

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:28 AM PST

    This is in Singapore.

My partner had to have a microdiskectomy for a large slipped disk back in August 2017. A week ago they contacted us to say that the surgeon had, in fact, missed a '0' off the end of his bill, meaning that the final price was around $2,500 short.

They now want us to pay the extra. We both think this is a bit ridiculous, as it is clearly the surgeon's, practice's and hospital billing department's fault. They should have all doubled checked before providing us with the final bill. Not only that, but it has taken six months for them to even notice and try to get us to pay.

Do we have to pay, or do we have a case to refuse? If so, what would the process to handling this going forward?

Just to be clear, insurance are covering the procedure, but only around 65% of the cost, and we don't have 1,600 to pony up on a moments notice.

Any advice or thoughts would be really appreciated.

[MD] Received an implausibly high electric bill this month but the landlord or power company are no help.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 11:10 AM PST

    Hi folks,

I'm renting a house in MD that's about below average compared to other houses on our street. During the summer/spring/fall time when the temperatures were reasonable and we didn't turn the A/C or heat on much, the bill was reasonable (between $80 to $200).

However, the last couple of months have seen a dramatic increase in the bill (~$400 last month and $700 this month). This is an implausibly high bill. I asked a lot of my neighbors using "Nextdoor" and pretty much all of them told me that the bill is ridiculous. My mother in law lives nearby and keeps the house at 75F and got a bill of ~$250 even though she has a much bigger house. My neighbors had similar bills with bigger houses and higher temperature.

Due to budget restraints, we had the house at 54 degrees (the minimum allowable by the lease). It's very cold but we manage by wearing layers. There is no way we can afford to live at this place with the bill being so high at 54F!

The corporate landlords kept repeating that it was a cold month. I asked them to check insulation and to install better insulation on the doors because we can feel the cold drafts coming through but they haven't sent anyone in a month. The electric company told me to increase my temperature to 68F and lower it at night to save energy and kept repeating that no matter what I said (we keep it constantly at 54 and don't change it at all).

Is there any way I can get the landlords to accept some responsibility for this? (faulty heater, bad insulation etc.). We can't really afford an independent electrician to come take a look.

    Thank you!

NYC: Over-tenants say they don't have to give us a heads up when coming over

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:16 AM PST

So this couple is renting out an entire floor from a realty company. Half of it they sublet out to my roommates and I, and the other half is their experimental art gallery. I'm pretty sure they're subletting half of this place to pay for the art gallery space. Anyway, they have had one room empty for quite some time, and they come in whenever they want to show the room with no heads up. We asked them to let us know when they were coming over and told them that there is a law requiring a week's notice for non-emergency repairs and 24 hours' notice for inspecting the place or to show it, as per the legal prowess of Google. They replied that they were renting the place, and are over-tenants, not landlords, so they can come in whenever they want. What are our rights as subtenants? We don't even need 24 hours, we'd just like to know when someone is coming into our home.

    Thank you in advance!

Terminated our first employee a few weeks back and they have now filed for unemployment. What should I expect? Missouri

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 09:16 AM PST

We had an absolutely terrible, uncoachable, toxic employee that we tried to improve for months until it was just no longer a viable option. Our state is an at-will employment state. We terminated her stating it was what was best for the company (no reasons given at our attorney's direction). Just got a call from the unemployment office asking several questions. I answered none and said I would call back with my attorney. I have a meeting setup with our attorney this afternoon. But what exactly can I expect out of this? I am finding varying answers online as to what can happen. Do we lose money out of this? Do we have to pay her a % of her wages for a particular duration? Could we end up in court? Missouri

Got bedbugs in an Airbnb in Rome. Host responds by insulting and threatening us. We also think the apartment is illegal, and are looking for suggestions of what to do

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 08:53 AM PST

Me and my friend rented out an apartment from a man, Kevin, in Rome [Italy] for a week long trip. My friend is fluent in Italian and I know a little of it. We spoke mostly in English for our trip, but did talk a bit in Italian, which he clearly forgot.

The first two nights sleeping there, I woke up covered in bed bug bites over most of my body. My friend was sleeping on the couch, and didn't get bitten. They were done in lines of 3 or more, which is a distinctive pattern apparently for the bugs. I am still in massive discomfort for these damn bites, they are so painful.

We informed the host of the problem and he told us it was impossible, we were silly little girls who knew nothing, and that there was nothing there. He said he'd come over and look at the bed. Whilst looking, he said that he had repeated problems with bedbugs, but that we were inventing things. He said that he couldn't see bugs crawling on the bed, so therefore they weren't there. Bed bugs live inside beds, not outside. I am currently covered (face included) in bright red bug bites. I asked him where he thought they came from, and he said 'those bites didn't come from my bed'

He then called someone to look for the bugs to prove to us wrong. On the (Italian) call to the inspector, he was very rude about us and said that we were making things up. He seemed quite friendly with the inspector and we were concerned that he was calling someone who would be lenient. We asked him to call someone else, which he said he did, but the first person he called was the one who came.

When the inspector came, Kevin would divert the inspectors attention from places (he didn't check the whole bed) and the inspector found signs of bed bugs. They were also talking shit about us in Italian whilst this was going on. However, this was not conveyed to us in English, and when Kevin 'translated' the findings for us, he said there were no signs of there ever being bugs, and the inspector then signed off on the place (they were clearly mates).

My friend at this point was staring straight ahead and didn't tell me what they were saying, (because she was frozen from fear of the things they were saying and had no privacy to communicate it). I didn't realise why though. I had a gist of what they were saying but wasn't sure. I said to Kevin that the man didn't check well enough, and that my bites were evidence. Kevin replied that the bites were from sexual diseases, because I look like I like to drink and 'party'.

I raised my voice and told him off for such a comment. He replied "don't raise your voice at me, you won't like what I'll do to you when I'm angry". We are two very small women and these were two very big men. They were already acting in an intimidating manner, and would often stand so they were blocking the doorway, talking shit about us in Italian. By this point we were extremely concerned for our safety and wanted to leave. I just started picking my things up and started to leave. My friend did too, and thankfully they let us leave in peace.

We managed to book emergency accomodation. When we got access to wifi, they had already contacted Airbnb and tried to slug us with false charges. Airbnb covered the charges so we didn't, and because they guy had a slip certifying that there were no bugs, we couldn't get a refund. After explaining the situation, Airbnb gave us the amount we would have received had we gotten the refund.

My main question is, is this something I should go to the police over? Our tour guide suggested it, but we are so exhausted from this whole ordeal and I doubt anything would come of it. Also, we think the apartment is illegal (according to Italian law the host was supposed to collect taxes from us when we stayed but he didn't). Can we go to the police for that, or is there a tax office we could notify? I kind of want to fuck this guy over majorly. Obviously we are already working on giving him a truely terrible review

I am being asked to come in an talk to the police. They said they might not press charges but I should come in and talk to them. I know how you aren't supposed to talk to the police but it seems like it may help. I am a terrible person but I need help. I don't have much time. Is there anything else I can be charged with?

Reserve revoking my funding halfway through the year?:(

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 03:12 AM PST

Hello Before I continue please don't give me any of the "why do you feel entitled to my tax dollars?!" stuff, I hear enough of it daily and I could really go without. I get it, it's not fair. Whatever. Also I appreciate any help you guys can offer. 🙂

I am a band member of a northern Ontario reservation, my mother is a band member but my father is white. We have resided on this reserve my entire life.

In April 2017, I accepted my offer to attend university in southern Ontario and sent a letter to my band requesting funding for the year. They sent back saying that they would cover up to x amount for tuition and up to y amount for residence and meal plans. The rest I would cover myself (engineering is crazy expensive lol).

The semester started and I informed the finance department of my university and then let me know that my post secondary counsellor already sent them a letter explaining that all invoices are to be directly sent my band. Also to be noted, I was CC'd on a email from my counsellor to the school which stated that I was not to charge anything at the bookstore, but all other costs should be forwarded.

The issue is my school emailed me last week saying that nothing has been paid! I went in to see the registrar (bc I didn't know where to go for directly finance) and they told me that my reserve is no longer paying anything! They're not letting me reregister for my classes and for the time being they're giving me options for payment plans and I've applied for osap (not sure how long that will take though). I've called and emailed my counsellor and the band office but no one has any answers for me as the counsellor is out on vacation. So I'll have to wait until next week.

My assumption was that they were going to do what they said they were? Can they just revoke my funding like that? I really hope this was some kind of mistake, but if not, is there anything legal I can do?

My location is Ontario, Canada. I'm/my reserve is a part of treaty three, if that's important.

I guess this is kind of long so I'm sorry. I'm very stressed especially because I am alone in a city 24 hours from home. Any help is appreciated greatly. Thank you. :(

[CO, USA] Did I Falsely Imprison Someone?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 12:15 AM PST

A friend of mine had her high-end road bicycle stolen lately. Her boyfriend's was also stolen.

I found that bicycle this evening. I was walking out of a grocery store and saw a bike that I was 99% sure was hers, locked outside. It's very unusual to lock a $4,500 race bike outside. I looked for my friend's social media post with pictures and details. I confirmed several key points: it was the same make & model year, with multiple obvious identical aftermarket mods. I was very confident this was her bike.

There was a gentleman, let's call him Cinderella, standing next to the bike, loading his backpack with groceries. He had a set of keys next to the bike, and one bike lock key matched the brand of the lock on the bike (bike lock keys are shaped in a very unique fashion). His friend was also loading his backpack about 4 feet away, next to another (low end) bike.

I called my friend and told her I had found her bike, where I was, and asked for the serial number. I asked Cinderella if it was his bike, and he said no. I then checked the serial and confirmed that it was indeed the missing one.

I turned to the guy, and asked him to unlock the bike, since we both knew it wasn't his. He said he didn't know anything about that and turned to leave.

Then, victim and her boyfriend showed up. I told boyfriend that Cinderella had been using it. We followed the him and I kept saying, "Listen, just show us the keys don't fit the lock, and I'll leave you alone."

At some point in the next few minutes, Cinderella's friend said, "Man, just give them the bike back." Shortly after that, his friend handed Cinderella the low-end bike, and he tried to mount it. Boyfriend grabbed the back wheel, preventing Guy from riding off. He said, "You need to wait for the police." Cinderella dropped the bike and started walking.

An officer came, asked me to identify Cinderella (he was wearing highly visible ski goggles), and eventually coaxed him to give up his key. The key unlocked the bike and it was eventually released to my friend.

So, TL;DR: Two citizens prevented a man in possession of stolen property from leaving. Did we falsely imprison him? (Also note: dude was armed with a 5" fixed-blade knife and Boyfriend and I weigh under 300 lbs together. This was an incredibly stupid decision.)

    I believe relevant law is:

§ 18-1-707. Use of Physical Force in Making an Arrest or in Preventing an Escape …

    (7) A private person acting on his own account is justified in using reasonable and appropriate physical force upon another person when and to the extent that he reasonably believes it necessary to effect an arrest, or to prevent the escape from custody of an arrested person who has committed an offense in his presence; but he is justified in using deadly physical force for the purpose only when he reasonably believes it necessary to defend himself or a third person from what he reasonably believes to be the use or imminent use of deadly physical force.

edit for update: I'm glad to report the other bike was found. A gentleman posted it to facebook marketplace, and also took it to an eBay reseller who specializes in high-end bikes. Guess who used to be a photographer at that company? If you guessed the owner of the bike, you'd be right. An employee called him and said, "Wait, when did you get rid of your bike?" and owner said, "Uh, when it was stolen out of my carport on Monday." Hopefully the copy of the driver's license and facebook post (already screenshotted, printed) will be enough to put a nice little bow on this for the detective.

Best Buy (Michigan) sold me a laptop they claimed was new. It wasn’t. I contacted the manufacturer directly (HP) — they said it was an older unit it & was registered to someone else last year. BB then sent a replacement. Same result. What are my options?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:37 PM PST

I went to Best Buy and purchased a HP laptop for my daughter. It wasn't in stock so they had to ship it to me. They said it was new laptop. After receiving it, we opened the box and saw scuffs and scratches — there's no way this was new. I called HP and gave them the serial/product numbers. They verified the unit was previously registered to someone else mid 2017. I was upset at learning this. I contacted BB, and they sent out a replacement unit. Same result; the laptop had scuffs and scratches. I contacted HP, and that laptop was also registered to someone else late 2017.

I called the local BB manager who I initially ordered it from. I asked if I could exchange it for a unit in-store or possibly upgrade to a similar unit to compensate for this dilemma. Manager declined and said I would have to pay for any difference in cost. He even had the audacity to say I was the one who could've scuffed it, and said that the two laptop serial numbers could've been accidentally registered by someone last year in 2017 (unreal how obtuse he was)! He only offered to return the unit, nothing else. I thought that was unfair considering the time and effort I spent on this issue that is clearly BB's fault.

The facts are on my side. HP verified that both units were used and were previously registered to someone else. It's pretty clear that BB expected me to be complacent and accept their shortcoming. But I won't. This form of corporate profiteering off consumer ignorance and essentially shortchanging customers is immoral and flat out wrong (and illegal.. I think).

This kind of malice and false advertising really upsets me. Can they really sell used/refurbished items and claim that they're new without any financial or legal repercussions? Are there specific consumer agencies or attorneys I should contact? I feel it's only fair that I do my part in protecting other consumers from these unfair and immoral business practices.

Thank you for any input and advice.

TL;DR: Best Buy sold me a used laptop that they advertised as new. The manufacturer verified it was used and previously registered. Best Buy sent a replacement that was also used. They declined to exchange for the same or similar unit, and only offered a return. How can I report and hopefully stop their immoral business practices?

UPDATE: I spoke with BB corporate this morning. They fully understood the situation and are aware of what happened. The executive staff member that was assisting me was very courteous and understanding, and is willing to help me out. They're in the middle of communicating with the local GM. They mentioned this could be a supplier issue who sent me the laptop, as some of you mentioned. Ultimately, I was given several resolution options, including exchanging for a (new) similar unit. They were going to look into the supplier issue afterward.

I appreciate everyone's input on this. There were a few folks that mentioned this isn't really a battle to take on, just return it and walk away..

The thing is, I don't walk away when I see someone wronging others. If this happens to another customer, they deserve to be treated as equally as me. There's no dignity in me being helped while someone with the exact same issue is being ignored by corporate profiteers. If this issue is happening on a large scale, then it no longer is considered something minimal. Consumers deserve to be treated fairly. I cannot accept a weak and selfish mentality of looking out just for me, then the person after me gets taken advantage of. There's no equity or honor in that. I'm not Superman here to solve problems for everyone, but if I could do something in my capacity to aid someone else that runs into the same issue as me, then why not?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 12:07 PM PST

My electric bill and usage had basically doubled last year. I originally believed it was myself and the two people I live with being careless about leaving our tv, lights and computers running. I would get the bill each month and then just give a usual "Hey, electric bill is still up, let's be more careful this month" then move on. Recently it has gotten colder and my electric usage nearly tripled along with my bill to an unbelievable extent given I live in a 700 sq ft home and I am getting an electric bill in the mid 300s while other people I know rarely spend more than 100 per month.

I called the electric company to dispute this they sent a tech over to verify I was using that much electricity but I objected so the tech pointed out that all of our electric meters were lined up together so he suggested I go to my house and turn off all the electricity to my house through the circuit breakers then see if the meter was still running up. I did this then ran some errands for a few hours then checked back and sure enough I had used several kWh even though I had no electricity going to my home.

I called my landlord who then looked over the meter box and noticed that my neighbors meter wasn't even hooked up. He then looked at the jumper box nearby and saw that yes he was siphoning off my electricity. He then spoke with the electric company and they didn't give him all the details but they did state they shut off his electricity back in March '17 for non payment. I have since had the police come by take pictures and document everything.

I have yet to press charges because really I just want my money back and need advice on the best way to do it. I did the math and between my average per month usage in 2016 compared to 2017 to today by electric bill went up by over 1200 dollars. My landlord has been unable to contact the neighbor and the guy isn't around at the moment because he is working out of town. I have called the electric company and they won't make any adjustments or credits for me because the guy was stealing from me not them. I still owe on a $350 bill with another one coming up that will be similar and I am not sure how I can afford it.

I started receiving robocalls demanding that I contact a toll free number to give them information regarding my whereabouts. They recently started calling my parents’ house as well. Is this legitimate?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 09:40 AM PST

Sorry for the wall of text, this got long. I am in Virginia, for reference.

Yesterday I received the following voicemail:

Hello my name is David, this message is regarding our location and tracing efforts for [name], it is important that we speak with you regarding their whereabouts. If we cannot verify this information through you, the law does allow us to contact all references on file. Dial zero now to speak to a representative or call [number]. If you are unable to provide any information please call the office regardless."

I ignored it, since it seemed to be phishing, but then not even three hours later my mother received a voicemail on their house line saying pretty much the same thing, but this time threatening to contact "the law" to "force" them to give them any information they may have on me. She was panicking, and was absolutely convinced that I was in some sort of serious trouble. I told her that it was very unlikely that any agency that could "make the law force me to talk to them" would probably not be contacting me via robocall, and pointed out that since I work for the school system, if someone was legitimately trying to locate me, it would be easy enough to find me through legitimate means. She was so upset I called the number back, which did not send me to a real person, rather, a voicemailbox, where I left a message firmly asking them to remove my phone number and not contact me further. I did not identify myself in the message.

This morning I received the following voicemail from what seemed like an actual person:

Good morning this message is for [name] this is Amy with the NT group, uh, we did receive a voicemail message from you yesterday, if you want to give us a call back, we can let you know what's going on. It's [different number from yesterday's message]. Thanks so much.

I am at work so I didn't respond. An hour later I received another robocall saying the exact same thing as the first message I received but with a different voice from yesterday's message and a different phone number.

I have a few concerns. First, is this legitimate? I used to work for a law firm that had a skiptracing department since we handled a lot of collections and unlawful detainers, and we were told we had to reach out in person, whereas these are clearly recorded calls. I do have a couple of accounts in collections, but I have been trying very hard to resolve those issues for at least a couple of years – every time I request documentation to show what I owe, they get extremely aggressive and refuse to send me anything. The worst one is for a store credit card that I paid in cash in the store, and apparently it was never credited to my account and whenever I explain that they refuse to send me proof that I still owe the debt.

Second, I have good (legal) reasons for not wanting to give out any contact or location information. A little under three years ago I went to court and testified against a man who raped me, and he was sent to prison. His family has harassed me, posted aggressive and libelous things about me across social media, and asked mutual acquaintances to tell them where I live (they refused). I asked the prosecutor who handled my case what we could do about it, but she said that because they were not being aggressive or threatening, there was nothing that could be done. As a result, I do not give out my personal contact information without very good cause.

Should I call these people back? How should I handle this? Any advice would be appreciated.

[WA] Unit inspection for my apartment scheduled with two days notice given, but they never came and rescheduled for two days later, so I took a day off work (to keep my dog away while they inspected), but what if they reschedule again? Can they give as many notices in a row as they wish?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 12:14 PM PST

I live in student apartments in a small college town, and my apartment is furnished. I got a 48 hour notice on the door on 1/21 saying they'd come inspect furniture on 1/23. I have a dog who I feel might be vicious if someone came into the apartment while no one is home, so I stayed to keep him on a leash while they were there. No one ever showed, but there was another 48 hour notice on the door after 7pm saying they'd come 1/25 between 10am-5pm (so actually less than 48 hours). I tried calling to reschedule and said it's because I don't want my dog attacking anyone, but they said they couldn't, that they were coming 1/25 anyway, and if my dog attacks someone it'll be designated an aggressive dog and have to be removed. I angrily managed to get a day off work to be home to keep my dog on a leash while they inspect, but what if nobody shows up? The apartment is notorious for treating tenants badly, and I've personally gotten several notices before and nobody ever showed up.

Can they just keep slapping as many 48 hour notices on the door as they want? I'm not always gonna be able to be here to make sure my dog doesn't attack anyone, and I obviously don't want him taken away, so is there any recourse if they just keep rescheduling over and over?

I am looking for advice about sharing crime scene photos. (IN)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 01:49 PM PST

(Indiana) Police confiscated my phone saying I took pictures of certain crime scene photos and shared them with someone not involved. I don't recall ever doing that but at that point in time, I was abusing alcohol very heavily and did a lot of things I don't remember. Currently seeking help for that issue. If they find that I took a picture of a picture and shared it with someone, what am I facing? I was terminated from my job because of it but now I'm facing legal issues. Help!

Car accident best course of action

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 06:44 AM PST

Hi, today a friend called me stating she got into a car accident where the other driver was at fault but she drove away from the scene because she didn't have insurance. She then told me the police have drove around her place and have came looking for her a few times now. She wants to know if her best course of action is turning herself into the police and if she'll end up facing jail time.

My son's high school band director contacted the college he applied to

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 01:34 PM PST

Attend next fall. She essentially told him my son is a trouble maker and convinced him to not let him audition for the University band. I'd appreciate any advice on which direction to take, I'm upset but he's pretty heartbroken.
