    starting a BBQ food truck

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 02:40 PM PST

    hello all,

Basically I'm in a position of freedom, assessing my options, and was curious as to what the reddit small business community thinks of my situation...

about 3 months ago I left my job working at a very popular and successful BBQ food truck business after having a falling out with the owner. I worked there for 5 years, loved my job, worked every single position in the company, and was operating as the GM and have handled a majority of the duties (finance, operations, hiring, etc) that went into running a successful BBQ business. I understand I was running a pre-existing company, and although I was there for a lot of growth - starting a business and running a business are two different animals.

Almost every single internet resource Ive looked at has cautioned the starting of a restaurant/food truck, and holy shit that scares me. I've always wanted to work for myself/be my own boss, and it just feels like this BBQ thing is the way to accomplish that. I've been networking with local people in the restaurant industry about getting started, spoke to other food truck owners about building a trailer, lawyers about my non-compete i signed when I was hired, and basically have been trying to do the due diligence.

right now, i'm 27, single, i dont have a job, ive got capital (around 40k saved up), an associates degree, and no clue what to do with my life....

considering the experience I have in the field, is the bbq food truck dream the business to start, or could I use the money I've saved and start some other type of business/investment for myself. any ideas or resources I should look into?

Not sure what kind of feedback to expect, but if you made it through reading this, thank you...

What to do if I want collaboration based on % share

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 03:23 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm working on one project and I would like to change from hourly-based salary to % share of that company. I see the potential and I want to offer more solutions and my work, which I know - they currently can't afford.

Question is how to properly manage this transaction - how to specify how much of % share is appropriate, when is the right time to get paid your share - annually? Or any other thing that I should keep in mind. If there would be real-life examples, it would be great.

    Thank you!

Looking for help with SEO and website content management

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 12:42 PM PST

I've been using a company for my SEO and website content management for years, however they have become increasingly unreliable and unresponsive. I run a mom and pop appliance shop and our website looks like it was made over 10 years ago and I think it really needs to be updated. However, my manager is worried that we won't be able to keep our website updated with product information. We pull a lot of prices, deals, and rebates from our suppliers sites and when it changes it also gets updated on our website. I wanted to hire a new company after weeks of emails going unanswered but I'm not sure where to look for a reputable SEO and website content management company. Would love any advice on this topic.

    Advice on street signage?

I am opening a ticket booth to sell local attractions, and I need to design the adhesive wraps to surround the booth.

For those in similar businesses, what do you recommend is the best for getting people to stop at the booth?

Boring but may help some. SSL Certificates are becoming 2 year only.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 02:55 AM PST

Beginning 3/1/2018 you will no longer have the option to purchase a 3 year SSL certificate. 2 years only.

For some, SSL's are a PITA, so you may want to be sure to renew it before then.

Hit me up if you have any SSL questions.

    Video Conferencing?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 12:45 PM PST

To those that use video conferencing frequently, what are the main advantages and disadvantages of doing so? I know many business have gotten rid of their main offices and went fully remote, though I'm unsure how this may have affected their productivity and general culture.

What do you loose in your meetings by choosing to VC as opposed to face2face?

Can a RipOffReport complaint be edited or added to by the original poster?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 02:41 AM PST

I know Ripoffreport won't let anyone remove their original complaint (unless you bribe Ron Jerem..I mean Ed Mage[dson] (lvl 99) with significant amounts of cash), but can users edit or add to their original complaint?

Someone has posted a false review that has caused me a great deal of stress and problems.

If changed to show that it was resolved and their initial remarks were false, it might reduce some of these problems I'm having.

Certain websites imply you can edit them, along with Ripoffreports themselves, others say you can't, and I've seen some reviews on there with "Edit: (text)", appearing that users have added to their original complaints.

Need recommendation for booking software (wordpress)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 09:05 PM PST

I'm going to launch cleaning ish business in the next week. I need a software that lets customers (and myself) schedule service. Importantly, it needs options for reoccurring service and payment.

I found launch27 which does this, but it's pretty expensive. Any other recommendations?

Finally decided to venture entreprenurially, Part 2

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 11:02 PM PST

So, after reading all of the wonderful advice from such amazing persons who decided to take time from their busy lives to give a newb some direction, I went back and rebuilt my entire store. I am still working diligently on it and am still tasked with the inner, daunting, workings of the store. That being said, I feel confident in the changes that I've made, and feel as though the site is definitely closer to being more authentic, genuine and professional. Please fellow redditers allow me the honor of your critique? https://duke-peach.myshopify.com. If you commented on my original post: Side Note for U: I will be adding a domain to the site as soon as possible. Thanks in advance!!

Need help with labels and the Clover POS. I need labels that attach rather than the sticker ones

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 12:15 PM PST

It looks like the Brother QL-710W does sticker labels only (unless I'm wrong). I'm loooking to do labels that attach to clothing like this:

    Bioremediation business

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:59 AM PST

So, I am putting some serious though into starting a Bioremediation business. Or Crime Scene Cleaning. The major hurdle I have is that I am a convicted felon. I am trying to turn my life around, and give back to society by being willing to clean up what nobody else is wanting to do. I know that this can be a major red flag, but is there any way that I can get people to see that I am sincere? I already am certified by the stat in custodial and blood borne training.

[LLC] At a crossroads - dissolve or continue?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:58 AM PST

At the beginning of 2017 I started an LLC with the intent to make mobile and PC games as a hobby for some additional income. While I did produce one mobile game, it didn't amount to anything and I never actually made any income on it. Given the lack of anything to show for it, and the fact I don't know what the future may bring, I've been giving dissolution a consideration.

Now, my situation is a bit interesting - I registered an LLC in DE, and then foreign registered an LLC in MN as that was the state in which I resided at the time. At the end of 2017 I moved to PA but did not conduct any business at that point.

The options in front of me are as such:

    1. Dissolve all LLCs, pay all taxes as required (including for 2018) and any dissolution fees

    2. Keep DE, dissolve MN, roreign register in PA and pay necessary current taxes with intent to continue forward

With the prospect of having to pay a lot of taxes if I choose to dissolve (given the fact I've waited to do this until 2018 without really considering those consequences) it almost makes it seem like I should just stick it out for the coming year and see what happens. Does that make sense to do? Also, if my business didn't actually produce anything, is there any way I can attempt to lessen the tax burden?

I'm hopeful some of you may have advice based on experiences you may have had with your small businesses. I am always hopeful I could actually take my hobby and make it profitable, but also understand the fact that if it's not financially a smart idea to keep a company open, I should consider closing it.

Thank you for your time and any input you provide, and best of luck in 2018 for your business!

[Update] Caught an Employee Stealing, it turns out he's Homeless.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 06:33 PM PST

Hey guys, I thought I'd give an update 1 year later. Here is the original thread.

    TLDR is at the bottom.

So the employee ended up buying himself a car, an old beater that barely ran. He parked it down the street with some other homeless. He would sleep in it, clean his clothes with our washer and dryer and he'd shower at another employee's house that befriended him.

However after a few busy months, with some sizable paychecks he never upgraded from the car. Eventually that employee that let him use the shower got tired of his shit. One day we needed him to come to work early but we had no way of getting a hold of him because he still hadnt bought himself a phone (or picked up one of those "Obama phones" for low income earners.)

I sat down with him for lunch and we had a talk about financial priorities. I asked him about getting a phone and an apartment, he said he was saving up for a laptop... yeah a laptop.

This is where it gets interesting. Another one of my employees admitted to giving him a ride to Stockton (a trashy city about 30 miles away) so he could go to a strip club. The employee told me that he was in love with this stripper which the guy proudly described as his "African Queen." He would drop him off for a few hours, let him blow through 400-500 bucks and pick him. This was a weekly thing.

Long story short, I stopped calling him back in to work.

I wouldnt say I've become cold hearted... I'm proud of my employees and what most of them have been able to overcome to get their shit together, but I'm hesitant to be so lenient in the future.

TLDR; After about 4 months the guy never got his shit together, he fell in love with a stripper he called his "African Queen", and I let him go.

How to reason against detailed timer backup for professional invoices?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 11:26 AM PST

In the past in my engineering company we have provided detailed timer notes for hours worked on an invoice, we want to stop doing this step as it adds time to the A/R process and other engineering firms are not doing the same. What is a good way to explain to clients that we will no longer be providing this information?

Looking for someone that needs help selling- Infomercial

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 10:15 AM PST

A few months ago I started my own unsuccessful online store. Since I am constantly innovating and trying to come up with new ideas, I decided I wanted to film an infomercial.

I had actors, I had a Set I had a script. Then I was about to start filming when I discovered that the niche I had chosen was a risky one when it comes to TV because it is easy to make false, claims and that sort of thing. Its still possible but what it comes down to is I just need a little bit more money to deal with the legalities of it to make sure I am in good standing with the law.

Anyway, this is not the case with all infomercials only the few that involve cosmetics, skin care, and anti aging that sort of thing.

So now I am desperately in search of someone that wants to work with me and get a half hour infomercial spot. I wont charge you a thing the only thing I need is to agree on a fair percentage to split with sales. This number shouldnt matter because I do believe we will be able to get a sizable amount of sales if we do everything right.

For the media, I can edit it. I can handle phone calls all that. In many cases we wont need to produce any media and using anything you already have on social media/youtube/etc. is appropriate.

What im looking for is someone that really actually wants to make sales because this is important to them, I want someone committed and I want to help fill your wallet, honest to god I just need someone that is like minded. I think we can have a lot of success here! Dont hesitate to contact me if you think you can benefit in any way from an infomercial. It wont cost you a cent, im not trying to sell you anything, I just want to make money like you and constantly hit roadblocks.

    Lets help eachother!

edit: Ps this can be anyone that has a product. I have been reaching out to artists, youtubers, anyone that has good content and a product to sell. Tell me what you are selling and we can work something out.

New Business - How to get clients?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 11:45 AM PST

After working in the medical billing business for years and, more recently, into full scale practice management, I have finally decided to branch off and start my own billing and management company. I have a unique process and set of reporting for analyzing productivity and quality billing metrics that I believe will set me apart from the hundreds of other billing services out there. However, I am feeling very overwhelmed by the prospect of attempting to get clients with no warm leads.

How did some of you go about getting your first clients?

    UK Tax help

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 02:47 PM PST

    Hello

I have run a small business in the uk, from home (sole trader) for 15 months, in my first year all profits went back into the business but I am now going to keep some of the profits (e.g. my wage)

I also have a full time job where I earn £21,500 annually.

I am brand new to this. I was wondering if I am eligible to be paying tax / the amount I should pay / do I need an accountant / who do I contact to start paying and anything else I need to know.

    Thank you all
