Am I entertaining an unfortunate scam?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 04:42 PM PST

One of my close friends moved to the state I live in about a year ago. When he moved, he started to fall off the radar despite me trying to set things up. He just seemed busy after moving, and I can totally respect that. But he started changing everything, including how he talks to me in private. He went from joking and positive things to talking as if I am a coworker. He told me that him and his wife opened up "a business" which I still don't understand. He invited me to talk to his mentor on the phone and I personally asked him what it involves because I don't like to put money into things I don't understand, and I like to make educated investments and educated moves toward growth. My own friend couldn't tell me to "respect the privacy of his clients", so I just let it go.

Then he approached me about it again and I expressed genuine interest, but I won't spend a penny on something I don't fully understand as to where that penny will end up and how it will make me money. He told me it's really lucrative and he and his wife are looking to retire and be financially free by their mid 30s (I thought uh oh, sounds like an infomercial). So I spoke to his mentor just now, who presented very well but he kind of had that little edge to him where it sounded like a front. He asked me about my background, I told him, then he said he would tell me about himself, and he said blah blah blah, I'm a mechanical engineer, my wife is an attorney, and I am set to retire in two years and I'm in my mid-30s, and I will do my engineer job part time as supplemental income to the money I make now, then he hit me with "how does retiring by the time you're 30 sound?" Which is a classic scam line in my opinion, because who will say something negative to that? Then he attempted to explain the business to me which still doesn't make sense...they work with huge companies like Best Buy and Macy's and help move their products and network to create extra lines of buyers, and we just take a little bit off the top. I asked for more information, he asked me to schedule a conference call with his mentor on Friday. I literally still don't know anything. It's about "moving assets".

This whole time I'm thinking this is a good friend, bright guy, he wouldn't lead me into something stupid. So that is why I come here to ask if this is likely as ridiculous as it sounds, to the point where a great friend would be unable to tell me anything about it.

Other red flags to me: he asked another mutual friend of ours who is not a hard worker (we even laughed about it) if he would be interested. I'm known to be motivated and a hard worker, that's why I assumed he approached me. If he approached someone who lacks drive and is not ambitious at all, makes me feel like he makes a cut off of people signing on. Another red flag to me is that he stopped doing social media as much as he did, when he first got into this, he posted a Snapchat of them attending one of those mass conferences at a huge venue several states away with some kind of mention of making business moves.

I am super ambitious and always wanting to diversify, and even branch out from my degrees to make more money and a legacy for myself. But I am a skeptic of most things. I trust my friend probably more so than almost every one of my other friends, so I am still willing to listen. But this to me literally sounds like a scam, like one of those businesses where they ask you to invest money into some product or asset, and you make some minor return, then they ask you to invest more, and just repeat until you realize it's going nowhere and abandon it. Another friend of mine did something similar, without disclosing the name of the business, she would purchase huge lots of fitness shakes, and she would relentlessly try to recruit people to do these 60 or 90 day workout routines which REQUIRES you to buy the shakes from her. She got invited to a similar massive conference at a huge venue as well. Eventually, she abandoned it because she was spending money on their product and not making the money back because obviously not as many people sign up as they make you think. This reminds me of something similar to that, where the few big guys make tons of money, sell huge dreams like early retirement to ambitious or gullible people, take money from them that they know they won't earn back in full, then repeat.

I just trust my friend, but given his change in demeanor in the past year, I'm extremely skeptical so here I am. Any thoughts?

two company names, one lLC or Two?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 08:54 PM PST

I made an Amazon seller account in September, selling books and retail arb. In November, I created a shopify account with a new brand name and brand product. Brand product is also being sold through Amazon under the other company name. Shopify account is doing $1000+ revenue/ day and rapidly increasing. Amazon account is doing $100+ revenue/day mostly from branded product and will also be increasing going forward once I start FBA.

Today, I hit a combined $2000 in sales, and realized I need an LLC and insurance.

My question is: should I make the llc the amazon and make the brand the DBA or vice-versa, or should I make them both LLCs?

Hey Guys! Are there any good business TV shows like "Shark Tank?" I love the business aspects of "Shark Tank" and how the Sharks give solid advice to young businesses. I'm looking for any show that's about business, sales, marketing, or entrepreneurship. (Shows of any model, do not have to be like Shark Tank i.e. Dragon's Den)

Thousand dollar bonuses at a large number of companies - coincidence?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 08:00 AM PST

I'm reading that many large companies passed out $1,000 bonuses at the end of last year. Not $500, not $1500, but $1000. AT&T, Comcast, Bank of America, Comerica to name some. Did your company do this? I'm suspecting politics and the tax bill have something to do with this.
