[CAN] Government vs Private Accounting Careers

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:31 PM PST

Currently a senior in audit at a big 4 and seriously considering moving into a government career. According to all my colleagues this is a "huge mistake" financially.

I'd like some opinions from people with a few years into their career. Have you considered government jobs, why or why not?

A few personal reasons for leaning towards government: - Just saw my uncle retire at 55 last month with 70% of his 120k salary guaranteed for the rest of his life, indexed with inflation. He has a whole decade of freedom compared to everyone else retiring at 65. Worked for CRA. - 4 day compressed work weeks - Having worked on over 15 clients so far, I've yet to see a controller making above 130k in the payroll (excluding benefits and stock options). They're also well into their career and usually 40+ years old. Salaries are likely higher for the US and Toronto/Vancouver here in CAN. Most accountants seem to cap at 150k unless they're CFO or VP finance. Not incredibly different than government salaries IMO. - Recession/depression? Doesn't matter with a government job.

Maybe busy season is clouding my judgement, but what is it that I may not be considering?

Those of you in tax, what do you love and hate most about your job?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 11:25 AM PST

Hey everyone! I'm in my final year of university and want to go into tax when I graduate. I just want to get an idea as to what the pros and cons are of the profession. Any advice for someone like me would be greatly appreciated as well

So how do you study for the CPA exams?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 07:11 PM PST

Im sorry if this is a dumb question but I havent really found any guides or resources that really tell me how to use becker or any of the other exam prep courses to study for the exam. Im only a sophomore right now so i have a while before i take it so this question is more out of curiosity than urgency.

I know about the various study guides out there. Again I just dont know how one utilizes them to study. Do you just go over lessons and do multiple choice questions afterwords?

Also if anyone can post what their study schedule looked like for the exams I would greatly appreciate it.

    Internal Audit Career Path

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 07:20 AM PST

So just from most posts I've seen about Internal Audit, a lot people here don't think too favorably on it (work is boring).

For those who do like it or know more about it. Is this a good career path in general (career growth, salary, exit opps, etc.)

    Non-traditional CPA career paths

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:47 AM PST

Most of my B4 audit colleagues take Senior Accountant/ Controller positions after getting their designations. I'm wondering if anyone has insight/ experience in a non-traditional career path that could be an option for a CPA not interested in a Controller position?

Production Compensation Models - Any experience?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 09:54 PM PST

    Hi There,

Does anyone have experience with production-based, or partial production-based compensation models in public accounting or consulting? What is the compensation to the employee based on (i.e. billings, chargeable hours, collections)? Are the cost of benefits taken into account when looking at the production model? Is there a typical rule of thumb used for how much "trickles down" in the form of compensation to the employee (i.e. 1/3 of billings, collections, etc.)

My firm is considering switching to this method and I would love any input you may have. Thank you.

Boyfriend is starting CPA - any tips/advice? I don't know anything about accounting

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:19 AM PST

My boyfriend is just starting the process to take the CPA exams, he is going for the orientation this coming weekend. I don't know anything about accounting or the CPA. He seems stressed out about it so I'm compiling a document with as much info and tips as I can. If anyone can post any advice or tips that I can pass along that would be greatly appreciated. What can he expect at orientation? What kind of study materials are still valid/available/recommended? He is working full-time but has some downtime to study at work. Thank you all in advance!

[US] How would a company account for issuing an ETN?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 05:37 PM PST

For example, Credit Suisse is the issuer of XIV, a very volatile ETN. With a NAV of over $1.1 billion, a 10% daily move could change Credit Suisse's liability by $100 million in a single day. Also, it is up 1350% since inception and still has 12 years until the ETNs mature. Surely they must need to amortize the expense over the life of the notes but how? With something so volatile they have would have no idea how much they will need to be pay out at maturity.

They also make a certain percent each year as a fee. To account for that would they debit the liability and credit a fee revenue account?

Any ideas as to how this whole thing is done?

I am graduating in March and then starting on the the rest of the credits to be able to sit for the CPA. I am terrified. I feel like I have learned nothing in my undergrad and honestly JUST convinced myself that I should just take the exam (Was thinking about just being an accountant but a bachelors in accounting really pays you nothing..) I feel like I will NOT pass it for whatever reason. . . Please give me a vote of confidence in this and solid advice..
