31% increase in premium from one accident claim. Is this normal? Posted: 02 Jan 2018 05:12 PM PST I recently had a minor parking lot backing accident where I broke another car's turn signal. I was determined to be 51% at fault. My recent renewal statement has my rates going up 31% from the previous period. I expected a small increase but not this much. Is this big of an increase normal for filing a single claim? I have not filed for any claims on this policy before this one. [link] [comments] |
I'm an ignorant bigot about insurance, how do we not get stiffed for frozen pipes? Posted: 02 Jan 2018 02:31 PM PST Living in the cold winters of Wisconsin. My sister has been out of the country since the beginning of December and isn't going to be back until March. Her son has been staying at my place the past few weeks. Yesterday, he asks to go pick something up at her house. Once we entered the house, we realize that it is literally freezing cold. The pipes and radiators burst and are leaking ice onto the floorboards. The sinks don't turn and the toilet water has turned to ice. Water boiler and piping all need to be replaced, with the plumbers estimating $55,000 worth of repairs. She's on the other side of the world, so I'm the one who's been in contact with the plumbers and her homeowner's insurance. It might be possible that the heating malfunctioned, but we're suspecting that she simply forgot to leave the heat on. If that turns out to be the case, is she screwed? Any advice is appreciated. Sold my old car, currently driving a loaner - what do I do about insurance Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:12 PM PST Last week I traded in my old car for a used car - I have not taken delivery of the new car because it is under a recall. The dealer has given me a loaner in the interim. What do I do about my auto insurance, do I inform them that I currently have a loaner, or do I keep the car that is no longer under my possession on there until I get my new car. [link] [comments] |
Need help applying for license Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:19 PM PST Hey all, I'm re-applying for my license appointment because my first was rejected because my state's office of the superintendent was changing their system at the time and there was also the holidays. In the time since I've first applied, I've changed employers to a company that is out of my resident state, but I will be working out of my home. My question is: which of those addresses should I enter for the, "business address" section? I don't have a my own business license, and I was told my application would have been approved as written with my previous employer. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2018 05:28 PM PST I let a friend ride my motorcycle, and he wrecked it. My insurance says my bike is a total loss and mentioned something about 6k... I'm financing the bike (have gap insurance), will the 6k go towards the principal and I receive the rest? Or will it go towards my remaining balance including interest? I'm trying to be adult about this and not let this ruin our friendship, so I filed under my insurance... will my insurance premium raise once all is settled? I've already asked my friend to pay the deductible, but if I receive no money back am I out of all money I put towards this bike (down & monthly payments)? I have progressive full coverage BTW —Florida. [link] [comments] |
Need assistance with a debatable insurance coverage issue involving wheels Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:32 PM PST I purchased a 2011 Land Rover LR4 from Land Rover Buckhead in Atlanta in 2010. It was on the show room floor with 22" wheels and Pirelli tires. When I bought the truck these were the only wheels and tires on it. So it's tough to call them aftermarket. Equally tough to call it stock. My wife was driving the truck and swerved to avoid a semi coming in her lane and she smashed a tall curb on the passenger side, resulting in breaking nearly a third of the front passenger wheel off! These are Redbourne wheels made specifically for Land Rover. We have full coverage insurance. They do not make this wheel anymore, so buying a replacement is out of the question. There aren't even any on eBay for sale, or Craigslist. The insurance company cut a check to replace the one wheel and tire damaged in the accident. My complaint is, the truck is supposed to be covered fully and when it is damaged, it should be returned to me fixed, in the condition it was in prior to the accident. The condition prior to the accident was not three wheels of one type, one of another. The body shop said that it needs to have all for matching wheels and tires for them to properly perform the alignment and test drive to determine what else is wrong with it from the accident. I already had Land Rover look at it and the entire wheel assembly had been pushed back 3/4", so that will require body shop work. But they can't see that with the spare on it. Land Rover put all four new wheels and tires on it temporarily to do the alignment and see the problem. So this is the fishy part, they cut a check for more than the value of the one wheel and tire, leading me to believe they are responsible for replacing all 4 new wheels and tires, but they don't want to pay for a comparable replacement. The comparable replacement is $5000, they cut a check for $1900. It would be same wheel manufacturer, obviously different wheel (all models cost the same) and same tires. So question is, should they be liable for all new comparable wheels and tires? [link] [comments] |
Hit a deer, catastrophic engine failure on Allstate Posted: 02 Jan 2018 09:55 PM PST Just before Christmas I was driving when a deer ran straight into the front of my 2007 Ford Edge. I was returning from vacation out of state, and the damage appeared to be cosmetic. We had several cracks in the bumper, a broken grille and a dent in the front fender. Allstate quickly got us an estimate, put us in contact with a body shop, and the car was scheduled to be fixed just after Christmas. Then things went sideways. My wife drove the car to work and it died in the parking lot. I called Allstate, and they had it towed to the body shop immediately. I called the body shop several days later to see what they found out. They stated that the cosmetic repairs were almost finished. I asked what was wrong mechanically, and the owner stated they didn't know anything was wrong with the car besides the cosmetic issues. He called me back later that day and said the engine was seized up and had coolant in the oil. He admitted that they had been running the car while it was in the body shop. Allstate is sending a claims adjuster out to look at the engine to determine if they are going to cover it. I have the very slimmest bit of hope that they will cover the engine replacement. I also have a very large fear that they are going to tell me tough luck. So my issues are...
I know, I'm probably jumping the gun by posting here before Allstate dumps my claim. But I have never, ever filed an insurance claim before this one. I have no idea how all this works. If Allstate won't agree to repair the engine, I will lose any value the car had, plus about $2500. This will not break me, but it will sting. And then I will have to shop for another used car. Any advice is appreciated. I am frustrated with the body shop for doing cosmetic work before checking the mechanical. I am worried Allstate is going to tell me too bad. I have no idea what I can do to protect myself in the next stage of the claims process. [link] [comments] |
How long will Geico leave a claim open? Posted: 02 Jan 2018 08:38 PM PST I had an accident early July of 2017 and it is now Jan 2018. I filed a claim within 24 hours after the accident and Geico said no one was at fault and both parties would just pay deductible for repairs. I've put off repairing my car for months since it was still driveable. I called told the claim agent I was eventually going to repair it but it would be a few months later. I asked her if the claim would stay open and she said yes. However, today I logged onto Geico to view the claim and it says closed. I was wondering if Geico will still let me pay the deductible to fix the car? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2018 08:09 PM PST I've switched my car insurance to Progressive to lower my premium. Geico's website won't let me just cancel if I select "Other Insurance" as the reason, and they want me to call them instead. However, I can cancel my policy online if I select "Sold Vehicle" as the reason. Is there any reason to not just tell them I sold the car and cancel online? I assume they want me to call because they will try to retain my policy and I don't want to deal with that. [link] [comments] |

Chicago Area Claims jobs referrals? Posted: 02 Jan 2018 07:18 PM PST I've been with State Farm for over 12 years, and I currently work in Bloomington, IL. My family is living in Chicago, and I'm commuting up to see them on the weekends. I've been applying to jobs up in the city and was wondering if anyone had any advice, suggestions or hookups. Transferring with State Farm is not an option because they are closing their Chicago office by the end of the year... [link] [comments] |
Can you transfer a life insurance cash value to another person's life insurance? Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:55 PM PST A friend of mine's grandfather has been paying his life insurance since he was a kid. (I know I know, life insurance for kids is a waste of money). Now my friend is 28 and is having his own kid. The grandparent wants to know if it's possible to switch the life insurance policy so now it is insuring the new kid, and retaining its cash value. Is this possible? I've heard of 1035 exchanges, is that relevant? Or does the grandparent need to basically cancel the insurance, cash out the cash value and just buy a brand new life insurance for my friend's kid? (There shouldn't be too much of a taxable gain because the premiums have been eating at the cash value for a while, so there is no gain to be had.) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:53 PM PST I was deemed at fault for a small collision with no injuries back in July, and was given a "failure to signal" ticket as a result. My car at the time ('02 Grand Prix) had no collision so it was simply a write-off, no claim or reimbursement from the insurance company. I just met with the court and had the charges withdrawn. If I am shopping around for new policies in my next year do I count this as an at fault accident, or have I had no at-fault accidents since there are no charges and I have a clean driving record? Thanks in advance for any advice! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:47 PM PST My city has partnered with a company to provide water service line coverage for city residence for $6/month (coverage benefit "$8500 per service call with as many service calls as you need for covered services"). Here is the website about it: https://www.sandiego.gov/corporatepartnership/existing/slwa I am intrigued given the low premium, and because my house is from the early 60s and has cast iron pipes going out to the main line. Also, we have friends in the neighborhood who have had major issues, costing tens of thousands of dollars to fix. FWIW, we did have a plumber do a camera of the entire line before we bought the house 5 years ago and everything was fine except for one potential issue but that wouldn't be covered by this anyway, as it's inside the house plumbing. I am also wary because it seems like it has the high potential for total BS and the BBB reviews are pretty awful; https://www.bbb.org/pittsburgh/business-reviews/extended-warranty-contract-service-companies/service-line-warranties-of-america-in-canonsburg-pa-16002086/reviews-and-complaints Should I even consider this seriously? Thank you in advance for your responses. [link] [comments] |
Anyone familiar with Cigna accident expense insurance? Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:31 PM PST Basically, all it says is if you have an accident they will pay the expenses after a deductable. Kind of like a mini health insurance plan for accidents only and a small annual maximum limit (ie. $5000 - $25000). So does this kind of insurance have no limits on things such as where you go, which doctor you see, and what things cost? There's no wording about being in some network. If I compare to other companies like Aflac, they pay me instead but some small amount or small amount per day. Such as $250 for an ambulance ride. No deductable, but doesn't seem it would make a dent in the bill. I know ambulance rides cost thousands. In Cigna's supplemental plan, can they weasel out of a $2k amnulance bill? Or a $60k ACL surgery, they will just pay $25k towards expenses and no shenanigans saying not covered because some person in the room was not in network or some equipment was experimental or junk like that? Earthquake insurance for a condo in SF- worth it? Posted: 02 Jan 2018 05:58 PM PST I'm a first time homeowner of a 1980s condo in SF for about 2 years. Originally opted out of earthquake insurance due to mixed reviews + pure fatigue when I first bought my place. I'm re-evaluating home insurance and have enough wiggle room that an earthquake insurance policy seems wise, what with the world ending and all. Also, I don't think my 6-unit HOA has a policy, and I know our building would benefit from some soft story retrofitting (we're up to code right now, but it could be something that needs to happen in the future). I'm looking at Amica vs a Farmers CEA policy. Interested in the pros/cons of EQ insurance as a condo owner, as well as anyone who has purchased thru Amica, who underwrites their own (they/re much lower at 360/year vs 1.5k/year for CEA). Much thanks! [link] [comments] |
Affordable Care Act insurance question. Posted: 02 Jan 2018 04:53 PM PST My employer offers two health plans. One which is cheaper than 8% of my income but doesn't meet minimal value standards or minimum essential coverage, and another that does but is more than 8% of my income. Around 24% actually. Do I qualify under the ACA(Affordable Care Act)? I was offered care for a qualifying event and I think I'm ok, but before I sign up fully I want to make sure that companies can't offer one plan that isn't compliant but is cheaper than 8%, and one plan that is compliant but costs much more and thus disqualify me through loopholes of some sort. I don't want to think I'm subsidized by the premium tax credit and turn out not to be. I'm working through a temp agency at a temp job if that matters. [link] [comments] |
Leave keys in car and unlocked for an extended period? Posted: 02 Jan 2018 04:27 PM PST Hello, I leave a spare key under my seat and often leave my car door unlocked. I have comprehensive insurance. If my car is stolen, would it still be covered? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Allstate claims department will not answer my calls Posted: 02 Jan 2018 12:37 PM PST I was involved in a small fender-bender and the other party is now demanding $15,000 to settle the claim. The representative in charge of my case will not answer no matter how many times I call them, and I am worried that they are going to take the easy way out and pay the other party. How do I get in contact with a negligent agent? Am I powerless here? [link] [comments] |
Not at-fault accident. Confused how to proceed (Ohio) Posted: 02 Jan 2018 04:16 PM PST Hello and thanks for reading, I'm looking for advice how to proceed. Last week another vehicle made an illegal left hand turn in front of me, i swerved to avoid him, was unable to and collided with him and then another vehicle head on. Both other vehicles were cited (I assume the 3rd vehicle was cited for something unrelated to the crash but not sure). My son and I were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. I suffered injuries to my left arm/hand and back/neck. I reported the accident to my insurance company, but since I was not at fault I've been dealing with the at fault party's insurance company. I have retained an attorney for the injury portion of my claim. The adjuster told me she could not speak to me if I had an attorney and that "liability for the accident was still under review." That was last Thursday. Today I received a phone call from another adjuster who advised me the vehicle is a total loss but as of right now the claim is in "inspection only" status and until fault was determined he can't make me an offer for the vehicle. I tried to call the main adjuster but was told again she couldn't speak with me and the claim was still being reviewed. I have no idea how to proceed. As of now they haven't paid for a rental or anything. I don't understand what there is to review. The accident report from the highway patrol clearly states their insured is at fault. Do I contact my attorney? [link] [comments] |

Haven't had insurance in months, just bought a pre-1981 vehicle. No insurance company will touch me? Posted: 02 Jan 2018 03:38 PM PST I'm living in AZ and am 20 years old. I live in a very low traffic area with mostly snowbirds so my last policy was super cheap. I ended up selling that car and just taking the bus/uber every now and then to work. I sold the vehicle in October 2017 and cancelled the insurance the same day along with sold notice etc.. I have called almost every company claiming to work with older vehicles and as soon as they hear that I am not currently insured or that the car is older than 1981 (It's a 1979 Cadillac) they deny the quote. I'm at a loss. Hagerty would not insure me because my grandmother lives with me and does not have a daily driver, she never leaves the house or drives but oh well. Allstate, Progressive, Safeco, State Farm, Farmers, The General, Mercury, SafeAuto and pretty much every other company has denied a quote because of those 2 things. I have 1 accident on my record from August 2016 and it's been paid out and closed. It was my fault and it did raise my rates on my last policy but didn't cause me not to be insurable when I renewed. What do I do? Do I just sell the car and not buy anything pre-1981 anymore? I love older cars and it sucks I can't drive one. Is there another option or company I haven't tried? [link] [comments] |
Storage Unit Robbed, No Receipts - Am I SOL? Posted: 02 Jan 2018 03:18 PM PST As said, My storage unit was robbed in what police described as a "massive" burglary - a huge amount of my stuff was stolen, however, due to the fact that a lot of it was just stuff I'd accumulated over my life, I don't have documentation of it (for example, i do not have the receipt for the Nintendo 64 I got for Christmas in 1997, nor for the hundreds of records I've purchased over the course of my life). What should or can I do, if anything, to get any sort of compensation from the insurance company? I do not have a separate rental/homeowners/umbrella policy so I have to go through their insurance (Sedgwick/Orange Door). To answer the question of "why," it's because I lost my job and had to move back in with my mom and the cheapest policy that would have covered my stuff was over $200 a month, which wasn't in the budget. Anyway, thanks in advance. EDIT: I realize my post was unclear. My unit wasn't the only one that was hit, about a dozen of us were burglarized. I am filing a claim but I want to know if there are special/extra steps and what to expect given that I don't have receipts for some of it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2018 03:10 PM PST I took their 3 weeks test drive, and now they're quoting me $600 a year less than GEICO for the same level of coverage. I'd jump on this but I'm a little apprehensive since it's a new company and there seem to be very few reviews on their claim process. Anyone using this car insurance company? Thanks [link] [comments] |
