    Posted: 23 Dec 2016 09:47 AM PST

Winter weather losses in the U.S. total over $1 billion annually. While Pacific Northwest winters are mild compared to the East Coast and Midwest, we still need to take precautions for increased risks associated with the winter months.

    Your Home

Frozen Pipes: Insulate garages, attics and crawl spaces where pipes are exposed, and insulate the pipes, too. When the deep freeze arrives, keep the house heated to at least 60 degrees. Run faucets at a trickle of both hot and cold water. Open cabinet doors so that heat reaches pipes under sinks.

For vacation homes, keep the heat on, have someone check the house daily, and consider shutting off the water and draining the water system. (How to: turn off the main shutoff valve and turn on every faucet until water stops running. Drain toilets by holding down the lever until the tank empties.)

Consider installation of an automatic leak detection and water shut-off system, which will limit damage from all types of plumbing leaks, including frozen pipes.

Water Damage: Ice dams form at the edge of the roof, caused by melting snow that refreezes when it reaches the roof edge. The dam forces water under the shingles and into the house, causing damage to walls, ceilings and floors. To prevent ice dams, keep a "cold roof" by insulating the attic floor, capping your attic hatch, and obtaining an energy assessment to pinpoint where heat is rising to the top of your home.

Fire: Additional heat sources (space heaters and fireplaces) and seasonal traditions (Christmas trees, holiday lighting, and candles) increase the risk of home fires.

Use common sense if you must use a space heater: make sure it is sturdy, on a level surface, and has an automatic shut-off feature in case it falls over. Never leave it unattended.

Chimney fires can burn undetected, so it's important to have your chimney inspected every year or two. Use only seasoned, dry wood to minimize creosote build-up. Use a screen to keep sparks in the fireplace and dispose of cooled ashes in a metal container away from your house.

Don't leave candles unattended and extinguish them before going to sleep. Most candle fires start due to their close proximity to combustibles and about 40% of candle fires start in a bedroom, where mattresses, bedding, and drapes are the first items to ignite. Use sturdy candle-holders, keep wicks trimmed to ¼", and use flashlights and LED lanterns instead of candles during power outages.

If you prefer a real Christmas tree, buy one with fresh green needles, give it plenty of water daily, and dispose of the tree when it begins dropping needles. Make sure your artificial tree is fire-retardant. For fresh and artificial trees, always use a sturdy stand and place the tree at least 3 feet from any heat source. Decorate with lights that are in good condition, avoid long strings of lights connected together, and turn lights off when you leave the house or go to bed.

    Your Autos

Auto Checkup: Take your vehicles in for a pre-winter checkup. A thorough checkup includes tires (changing to winter tires or checking tread and inflation of your all-weather tires),wiper blades, heat and defrost system, antifreeze, and brakes. Make sure that you have proper gear and emergency equipment in each car: ice scrapers, jumper cables, tire chains, lock deicer, flashlight, blankets, and emergency phone numbers.

Winter Driving: First, be sure that you can see. Clear snow from the car top, remove all snow and ice from your windshield and windows, and don't forget to remove snow and ice from your lights. Keep your lights on so that you can see and be seen in poor weather conditions.

Take major highways and roads when you can because they will be plowed first. Keep a safe distance from other vehicles, doubling the distance you maintain during good weather driving. Remember that truckers are driving large rigs that take longer to respond and they need lots of room to safely maneuver or stop in heavy rain and snow.

Be extra cautious on bridge decks and highway on & off ramps, which ice up sooner than pavement. Avoid using cruise control; a light tap on the brakes to deactivate can send you into a spin if you hit a spot of ice. Don't try to slow or stop by pumping anti-lock brakes. Instead, stomp on the brake and steer to avoid danger.

Stay Safe and have a happy holidays and new year!

    Will i lose Medical coverage?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 09:25 PM PST

Hi, I'm a 19 year old with Narcolepsy. I live in PA and I am enrolled in the Medicaid program. My specific narcolepsy causes me to have severe sleep paralysis/comas and daytime sleepiness which stops me from waking correctly. It stops me from being able to keep a reliable sleep schedule so its incredibly difficult to find a job suitable for me. I take an extremely expensive medication that i would never be able to afford myself that allows me keep a normal schedule and work a normal job. If i get a job will i lose my benefits? I already was denied disability multiple times even though i wouldn't be able to work without the medication. Idk what i would be able to do to keep them. Sorry if this is worded terribly i'm very bad at explaining things well.
tldr; Cant work without medication covered by medicaid but getting job to support myself will void me of my benefits

    Health Insurance Questions

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 12:32 AM PST

To start with, I have a very strong suspicion that I have ADHD and I would like to get a doctor's diagnosis. I don't know anything for certain, but I've noticed that I have some tendencies and my family history fits the bill (dyslexia, alcoholism, depression).

Now to the insurance part! I am currently under my parent's health insurance policy, but it doesn't provide any coverage for mental health. So while I would be able to pay for the visits out of pocket (not super easily, but I could), I thought it might be better for me to get my own policy that would provide some coverage. I am a bit of a health insurance novice though, so I was just looking for some information!

My questions are: How should I go about searching for health insurance with a good mental health plan? If I were get diagnosed and start treatment now and then were to later get my own policy, would it be a per-exsisting condition? For an otherwise healthy 21 year old male, what would the price range of a policy be? (I can provide more info to answer this question if needed!) What should my next steps be towards getting my own policy?

Thanks for reading, any info is helpful!

    Accident worth a claim?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 02:37 PM PST

Driving down the toll road, the truck in front of me swerved out to the left, I see an orange yellow square without much time to react. I decide to go over it. WHACK, sliding metal sounds, I pull over and pull it out of my now deformed bumper. Seems to be a construction digging tool.

No paint required, i have a $1000 comprehensive and collision deductible with geico, I order the parts online from GM parts direct and fix it myself (parts a little over a thousand without labor)

I figure I did the right thing as I would likely lose insurance or get charged excessive fees over the next 5-7 years because of it (totally way more than the total repair cost over time)

Did I do the right thing or should I of filed a claim and let the dealership scratch my truck up?

Turning 26 in a few months, employer doesn’t offer health insurance, what do i do?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 03:50 PM PST

I am a student(i graduate in the spring), i live in New Jersey, and i currently only make a little under $500 every two weeks at my job, but my employer doesnt offer health insurance. I also am getting kicked off my mothers health insurance in early March and am quiet lost as to what to do. I am planning on searching for a new job asap after i graduate that offers health insurance but i only have 60 days after my birthday to sign up for health insurance. The only doctors i go to maybe once a year is my optometrist to get my contacts perscription and the gynecologist. Other than that i havent been to any sort of wellness DR in 3+ years. I know i can only afford something cheap, anything over $100 is going to be really tough while in school to pay for. Any advice? Please

Back into car behind me, no information traded.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 03:34 PM PST

This just happened. I was at a Costco in South San Francisco waiting to get gas, and it was my turn to inch forward. I must have not been paying attention since the car drifted backward into the car behind me. I went to apologize and the dude went to inspect both car for damaged. He said he doesn't see any damage and offered to do a handshake and be on the way. I agreed, so we ended up not trading insurance information. He did tell me that his car is a rental, and he's going to take a picture of my back licence plate while I did not take any. The only thing I have is my dashcam footage of the incident.

What should I do now? Should I wait it out and do nothing, or should I report the collision with my insurance? I see a little scratch on my bumper, and it's barely noticeable.

    Out-of-network doctor inside in-network hospital

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 09:33 AM PST

    Hi,

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

My daughter was born earlier this year and unfortunately got a bit sick shortly after. We had to return back to the hospital where she was admitted to the NICU for a bit more than a week. This hospital is in-network with our insurance, in fact we also visit the pediatrician associated with the hospital regularly.

After paying the out of pocket maximum, we have now received a new bill from the hospital for part of the treatments during the NICU stay and the insurance company is claiming that they would not be able to cover this because the doctor that sent the bill is out-of-network.

Is this possible? Is it really legal for them (the hospital) to use a doctor that is out-of-network inside the hospital that is in-network without telling us? We never signed anything agreeing to an out-of-network doctor.

Thanks so much for any insights you can provide.

    GA Minor Fender-bender

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 10:49 AM PST

I got into a minor accident today, roads iced over and I slid down a hill bumping into the car in-front of me. Everyone's ok, no damage to my vehicle and I think there was no damage to hers. There was a crack on the bumper (looked like it was just cracked paint) that she was concerned about, but her car was already pretty beat up and had clear paint damage all over the vehicle. Exchanged info, I went ahead and notified my insurance (might have been a mistake) of her potentially filing a claim.

If she does not file or its determined there's no damage should I still expect my rates to increase? I have Statefarm btw.

TL:DR Slid down a hill hitting another car. I did not notice any damage but went ahead and notified my insurance. If no claim against me is filed will rates increase?

Insurance pays part of bill before deductible is reached?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 03:39 PM PST

I got an emergency room bill that didn't reach my high deductible. I've had no other health charges this year at all. To my surprise, my insurance covered about half of my bill. I thought with the way deductibles work I was going to have to pay it all out of pocket. What am I missing about deductible plans? Why might my insurance pay for this?

    Thanks

Facility says insurance won't pay them until after they receive money for the deductible?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 07:16 PM PST

So I had insurance with a really high deductible ($12,000) that I owe a healthcare facility. We are trying to get them to work with us and lower the amount we owe them but they are standing strong. The part that I don't understand is that they are saying that the insurance company won't give them any money until after we pay them the $12,000 in full.

Wouldn't the insurance company still pay everything that was after the $12,000? Once we hit that number then the insurance should kick in and pay the facility? Can they really hold their payments until the $12,000 is paid?

The money is owed to the facility and not to the insurance company. Do you think they should be able to lower the bill?

    Motor accident

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 07:04 PM PST

Long story short, earlier today going home from work and an individual rear ends me. We exchange insurance information and I called her insurance, which then reached out to her and she accepted liability for the accident admitting fault. The lady handling the claim with her insurance said the repairs on the bumper will be fixed and rental will be paid for by her insurance and sent me repair locations to get estimates and leave vehicle off for repairs. My only question is since it is the weekend and Calliber collision is closed I'd have to go Monday, would the person at fault be able to change her story from initially taking fault or is everything done for since their insurance (USAA) accepted liability after calling the policy holder. First time being in an accident so just wondering if this can go south. I had initially filed a claim with my insurance but cancelled it after a rep from my insurance (Progressive) suggested to file claim with them so I don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Thanks!

Insurance after seller self repaired roof?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 03:09 PM PST

First I'd like to say this subreddit is fast becoming valuable to me! I am buying a home in Florida. Unfortunately, the insurance company we chose to go with discovered a prior claim in 2015 for wind damage. The seller took the claim money, and repaired the damage himself. My inspector said the roof looks good, so it appears he did a good job. However, my agent says that this company's policy is if there is no documentation showing the repair was done by a licensed professional, they will not cover the roof. He thinks there's a good chance we're going to have to look for a different company. He is going to try to convince them to reconsider, but he doesn't seem hopeful.

I'm trying to be positive about this, but I'm worried. How difficult will it be to find a company to cover this house? This roof was just put on in 2013, so it's not even old. :(

    Glass Claim with Geico

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 05:56 PM PST

I live in Honolulu, Hawaii, and a few nights ago, I had parked my car along the street of my apartment and had walked to the nearby Starbucks. Only being gone for no more than 10min (walked to pick up a phone order), walking back passed my car, someone had smashed my front windshield and rear glass (The opposite side) completely with what looks like from a bat or something. I filed a police report shortly and a glass claim and haven't heard from them for a few days, so I decided to call today.

My deductible is $1000--I guess in Hawaii glass coverage is under your comprehensive coverage--this isn't an issue for me, but Geico has told me that they only deal with Safelite for glass replacement and I do not want to use their service. Geico quoted me $899+tax, a $9.95 disposable fee, and $24.99 if I want to have Safelite come to my apartment to do the replacement. My car is 3yrs old and was brand new and I prefer to use AP or OEM glass...Basically the factory glass--same type that was originally on the car. Safelite uses OE which is considered the lower grade of the 3 and I've heard a lot of bad things about their glass such as it being a more yellow tint, thinner than the OEM glass, and cracking easier. I also read that if it were to crack again in the future, that it wouldn't be covered under any type of warranty--making me have to initiate another glass claim. Don't get me wrong, if this were like a beater car or something, I wouldn't really care, but this car is hardly 3yrs old and is a Lexus, never been in any accidents, no dents, scratches, or anything. Geico doesn't seem to want to let me use another shop for repairs when I was asking about it. My thinking was to go through the dealership and have them replace, and then have the invoice sent to Geico and I just pay the deductible and minus any other differences there may be.

Geico's thinking seems to be since my car can be fixed through Safelite for under the cost of my deductible they're not willing to do anything at all unless I go through Safelite--which I would be paying out of pocket regardless anyway. The quote through the dealership is about $1532 to have it done with OEM glass...why Geico would be so hard headed to save $532 over keeping me as a customer is beyond me.

    Diminished Value Claim on car

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 05:24 PM PST

So this week some lady not looking failed to yield to me as I was turning and smashed in to the front of my car, smashing up the driver side fender and throwing the wheel out of alignment. I drive a 2016 Hyundai Genesis sedan (nicest car I've ever owned) it has 24,302 miles on it.

So her insurance is allstate, they are going to obviously pay for repairs and rental. But this kills the resale value on my car just for it having a history of being hit. And I was literally considering trading in this car for a kia stinger next year, so this just fucks that all up since i am a bit under water on the car loan.

I am contemplating on going after allstate for a diminished value claim. Does anyone have any familiar experience with this.

Changing from homeowner to landlord policy

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 04:10 PM PST

Currently, I rent out a house to several people, who each have a separate room and share common parts of the house.

The HO3 policy that covers the house now probably isn't suitable, and I recently requested an estimate for a landlord policy that will cover damages plus loss of rent. From my naive viewpoint, this looks like a simple solution to a problem I should have anticipated a while ago. However, I don't want it to cascade into a potential problem with my lender.

If I subscribe to the new landlord policy, the new insurance company will contact my lender to update how the escrow account pays out. My lender will receive details of the new insurance policy, including that it changed from a homeowner to a landlord policy.

Could this cause a problem, and has anyone heard of a lender calling in a loan or imposing fines in this scenario?

    Many thanks for your feedback.

Over A Week After Accident and Nothing Resolved! Please Help!

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 12:03 PM PST

On December 1st this happened... https://imgur.com/a/nTXzL (Police Report - I'm Vehicle #2). So this guy cut across the opposite side of the highway and hit me and got the citation. I managed to get my car back to my driveway and its been sitting there since.

My insurance (USAA) told me to wait for the police report and to contact his insurance to resolve the issue. December 6th finally the police report is ready and I contact his insurance (Allstate). They ask for the police report and I send it to them and they provide me with an adjusters name and claim number. I have called the adjuster about 3 times and left voice mails and she still hasn't gotten back to me.

I was also given an Allstate claim contact. This guy was a real pain in the ass. He wanted a recorded statement. I tried to tell him my statement is exactly as the police report is stated. He wants to record me anyway, and was trying to get me to somehow blame the accident on myself. If you look at the police report I don't know how that accident could ever be my fault LOL. Why the hell did they even ask for a police report if they are not going to use it. I give the statement and ask when will I be able to get a rental. He says after the other driver gives his statement. I'm like its been a week and he hasn't reported this accident? Apparently he has another week from today to give a statement and I'm screwed until then.

This is absurd and feels like they are not going to do anything for me. Ubering everywhere will add up and they wont be reimbursing me. What the hell do I do?

I was rear ended, insurance wants to send me a check now..>

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 05:30 AM PST

Two weeks ago i was rear ended. The same day i was rear ended i went to go get an estimate because the driver admitted to fault, said she was going to pay for it etc. After work I called her and she did not respond, so i drove to her house and knocked on her door. She still didnt show her face but her husband did. I talked to her husband (also on policy) and told him i would be willing to accept a payment equal to cover the repair so their rates wouldnt go up. He only insisted on taking it to a shop of his choosing, said the repair wasnt worth the estimate. I told him no, whos going to pay for my time off, whos going to give me a vehicle to drive, if im going to take it to a shop its going to be of my choosing and through the insurance. I overheard him saying he has a $1000 deductible etc. I kept bringing up a payment but needless to say i wasted my time. I told him im just going to file a claim, so i did. I gave them a chance and they slapped me in the face with it, so now they lost and are going to have to pay more than what i was willing to accept cash.

Now two weeks later Allstate has called me back and wants to give me a check. I got an "app estimate" through pictures only. They emailed me an invoice showing about $800 for the repair. The other shop i took it to showed $1200. None of them checked the tailgate that doesnt open now. Additionally my transmission started throwing a code about two days ago. I can only assume it was related to accident but im not a mechanic so..idk how i can go about that. What are the chances of this damage being paid out if it was caused by the accident?

I know how insurance always tries to pay out as little as possible. If i do get two more quotes and theyre higher than the insurances original estimate, can i request an amount average to the higher quotes? Also, Will i be forced to go through with the repair at any one of the shops i choose or can i just take the check? I feel like ill just end up selling the truck now so i dont want to repair it.

Do drive wise device companies communicate with the car insurance companies?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 04:56 AM PST

I unknowingly drove uninsured but before I had my accident I agreed to a price and a driving device program to lower my rate.

Next week when I get suspended obviously I'm not going to drive, but my dad sometimes drives my car. Are they gonna find out I'm suspended and see that I'm still driving my car and gonna charge me or something. Or do they not get that information?

Because I locked into a plan and a price before my accident they did a lookup on my history and driving status. Does the car insurance company look up status regularly or get an alert and will they share that with the drive safe program?

    Date of diagnosis question

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 04:54 AM PST

So I can pick up critical illness insurance through my work for my fiance/domestic partner. Policy would be in effect as of January 1st. The problem is that December 27th she has a follow-up exam which will very likely diagnose a very early stage cancer. So the question is - would the date of diagnosis be the date of the test or the date it's communicated?
