Does this grad student tuition tax thing even need to be a real issue? Posted: 05 Dec 2017 04:20 PM PST I've been reading about the proposal to tax graduate school tuition 'waivers' in the upcoming tax bill, and I'm a little bit confused. I went to graduate school and benefited from there being no taxes 6 years ago, but I wonder why graduate schools 'charge' tuition in the first place. Take a PhD program, for instance. In most (all?) cases, the school never collects tuition money from it's admitted students. If Notre Dame, as an example, wanted to admit all of it's Philosophy PhD students and say that tuition is $0, there is nothing really stopping them from doing so, as far as I can tell. So, if no students actually pay for tuition, why charge it in these programs? If tuition is 'free', there will be no taxable 'income' for getting tuition waived. I'm sure the charge for tuition ultimately has something to do with internal accounting and funding for the universities, whether private or state/federal. I guess my point is: the entire debate is ignoring whatever the real issue is. I just can't quite pinpoint it. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
$50k in public loans. Should I do a graduated repayment plan or refinance with a private company? Posted: 05 Dec 2017 03:50 PM PST
I feel I need to get this payment lowered, it's just crazy high. What do you all think is my best resort? Options?
Question though....could I refinance my graduated repayment loans later and my credit score is better? So do the $289 graduated plan for two to four -ish years. Refinance, as I'd assume my credit score would be 700+ at that point. I don't intend on taking other loans out. To then instead of paying the increased monthly graduated repayment I'd pay the refinance payment. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Dec 2017 04:32 PM PST I should've started school last year but I didn't know how to fill out my FAFSA. They would keep sending it back saying I need to make corrections. Anyways.. My parents have been living in Mexico for about 5 years now I lived with them also for about two years before going back to the us. to live with my sister. My sister who just now turned 23 only had temporary custody of me. When I filled out my FAFSA last year I couldn't put any tax info down because my parents don't do taxes in Mexico. The school I was planning to attend didn't know how I should fix my FAFSA so I ended up not going. So do any of you know what I should do!!?. Also my sister has claimed me on her taxes, so should I put her tax info down?. [link] [comments] |

Changing from Standard Repayment to Graduated Repayment Posted: 05 Dec 2017 05:41 PM PST my loans are being serviced by fed loan servicing (green and white website) and i am trying to better understand what is the best payment plan as the website shows differently and the customer service line is useless. i have been on the standard repayment plan since the end of 2015 and i started off by paying the outstanding interest so that i "started" at square 1. i have been paying a little more than the fixed payment and making steady progress on my loans. i went onto the site to increase my payment and when i came across other payments its not showing that the graduated repayment option will save me roughly 23% in interest and 24% in total repayment if i switch yet when you go under detail it says that its more than the standard repayment? i called the customer service center and they were basically no help and didnt have answers for me. has anyone else come across this and what is the best option [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Dec 2017 07:57 PM PST Hi there, My girlfriend recently graduated from an LPN program and is trying to move onto her RN program. I don't know all the details (I can get them but she's sleeping now), but I know that over the summer she was going to take 2 classes that she decided she wasn't going to need and that they would possibly hurt her chances of getting into the RN program. She received a Pell Grant for these classes, but never received any money for them, and officially withdrew from them after 2 class sessions (which was after the drop period). Now the school is telling her that she needs to repay approximately $1300 even though she never received any money for the classes and only completed 9.1% of the semester. They are basically saying, I think, that she has "unearned aid" of 90.9% of the Pell Grant and that's what she owes, but I'm not sure exactly. She doesn't have the $1300, and never took the classes, but can't get into the RN program without resolving this. Does anyone have any advice on how this should be handled? It seems really stupid that the school got a grant from the feds and never distributed it to her, and now they are saying she owes a large portion of that grant to them so they can repay the feds. I don't get it. Can someone enlighten me to how this all works? I haven't had to deal with student loans for many years but I want to help her figure this out. Thanks!! Edit: here's the letter she received if anyone wants to decipher it or offer any insight on how she can avoid paying this https://m.imgur.com/E9JPGic [link] [comments] |
Question on refinancing a refinance loan Posted: 05 Dec 2017 01:55 PM PST Hello, I previously had about $60k in loans with Sallie Mae at about 12% interest. I am also fighting a collection with a previous landlord in a case that I am likely to win (according to case law brought forth by my attorney). This collection has prevented me from getting a refinanced loan. However, I am able to get a co-signed refinance at 6.75% right now. Prior to this collection, my credit score was in the 760 range and my cosigner's is up there as well. My co-signer qualified for a 4.75% rate on Sofi but was declined once my credit info was input. My question is, should I take the 6.75% refi now and then shoot for the 4.75% or better when the collection is removed from my report, or should I wait until it is completed and then do my refinancing then. I believe it makes the most sense to refinance now since my current rate is so high but wanted some other input please. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
The Hill: GOP bill would eliminate student loans forgiveness for those who enter public service Posted: 05 Dec 2017 04:01 AM PST Came across this article today on The Hill. Seems to be missing details. Didn't mention if those already pursuing PSLF would be grandfathered in. Previous articles have. I assume the same here but wondering if anyone has any more details? Anyone taking students loans in Canada from the NSLSC? Posted: 05 Dec 2017 04:18 PM PST I got locked out of my account and it says to call the toll free number to fix it. So I call and went through every single option and stuff and it didn't lead me to unlocking my account or to a representative who could unlock my account. What do I do? I've already left a general inquiry on their page asking how I'm supposed to do it but it says they'll reply within 5 business days but I need to know now! [link] [comments] |
New tax plan - question about student loan interest tax deduction Posted: 05 Dec 2017 01:19 PM PST I've heard some talk about the new tax plan removing/getting rid of the tax deduction that we get from interest paid on student loans. Anyone heard of this? I guess if this is the case, I'll need to make a large payment before this tax year ends... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Dec 2017 12:13 PM PST My other half is a teacher making ~ $20k per year. Her student loans (~30k) have very low payments ($15) due to using using income based repayment. Unfortunately, the payment is so low that the loan balance is going UP. I have researched a little bit and unfortunately, she doesn't teach for a specifically low-income school or low-income area, or special education, or a non-profit or 501c3. She would have to switch schools to a low-income one in order to qualify for PSLF, which would not make the trade-off worthwhile or appealing. In addition, her father has a parent plus loan that he took out for her, but he is unemployed and is starting to put pressure on her to start paying it (another 23k). We are not married and I am not in the position to help pay her loans. Any advice on how to proceed? [link] [comments] |
Parent Plus ICR question...overwhelmed at the moment...would love some input Posted: 05 Dec 2017 12:07 PM PST We have a PPL in the amount of $83,000 that we took out (at the strong suggestion of the FinAid office) for our daughter. She graduated in June, so it's that time. She also has her own loans to deal with, however she is prepared to help us with the Parent Loan. I put all of the loans in my name, because my income is fairly low, especially compared to my husband. However, upon further review, I'm realizing that it doesn't matter. We file our taxes jointly, so am I right.....his income will also count? I thought our best plan was to consolidate and apply under the ICR to try to lower the payments. I currently work at a public school, and I was also hoping to apply for PSLF. But I was also hoping to lower our payments to a more manageable amount. With his income added to mine, will our payment be even higher than the standard? Are there any other options to lower the monthly payment? Am I on the right path? PPL: 83,000 My income: 24,000 Husband's: 125,000 Children: 2 (aforementioned daughter, age 24; and son, age 21--who is currently in college) Thoughts? [link] [comments] |

NelNet Still Showing up on credit Report Posted: 05 Dec 2017 07:16 AM PST I haven't had a NelNet Account since 2013 but it still shows up on my credit report with a Balance of 5k. I've contacted Nelnet several times and they tell me the same thing every time that the account is closed with $0 balance. Anyone else having this issue, is there anything i can do about it? Recertified my IBR (PAYE) and my payment went... down? By a fair amount Posted: 05 Dec 2017 06:03 AM PST So last year in December when I applied for the IBR for the first time, I had zero income for the year before so nothing for the IRS to send in. I got a real job in June of that year, so I had to send in some pay stubs. My monthly payment was set at $290. I just recerified and this time I just did the IRS retrieval option. I only got my job midway through the previous year so my taxable income was obviously half of my yearly salary. Anyway so now my payments are $120. I'm in the PSLF. Will this lower payment for this fiscal year come back to fuck me over in some way? [link] [comments] |
