I have posted this to r/auslegal as well, yet I am basically panicing. Nothing has been taken to court yet but I am aware of the allegations this woman has accused me of.

I've been living in this apartment building for about 2 years without incident however our old apartment manager quit then was replaced by this woman. After a few weeks I noticed stuff was getting moved around in the apartment but nothing stolen. (To mention the apartment is two storeys and you need to walk up a staircase to get to the main area of the apartment, downstairs is basically the garage with a bit of storage and a laundry room.)

I went to the manager and asked if there's any incidents of anyone entering my apartment, because there's cameras on the premises that she has access to. She later reported there was nothing on camera.

A few weeks ago I was sick so I took time off work, while I was watching tv I decided to wank off (I live alone and do regularly clean the apartment). I heard something like the front door being unlocked but I was mid climax and did not think anyone would actually be in my apartment also sound travels here like I can often hear the neighbours walking upstairs in their own apartment. I thought the noises were coming from next door.

Yet suddenly the apartment manager causally walks in just looking around before she notices me, I covered myself and told her to get the fuck out, then she runs away downstairs. She tried to call me but I ignored her and took record of her entering my apartment with time and date, recorded the best incidents from memory with time and date for me noticing the stuff in the apartment getting moved, the day she gave me a report, then sending it away to the owners leaving out the masturbation part.

However she's turned around and said basically when she entered the apartment without announcement or permission that I pulled my cock out and asked her for a root. The major issue is I am a coordinator and social worker, any reports like this whether false or serious will get me immediately fired.

Does she have grounds to get me charged if she takes it further? If its found that she is lying can I sue her for slander? I have no criminal record and have plenty of people who can talk on my behalf positively. I'm not sure of what to do because I'm freaking out.

[WA STATE] My attorney withdrew based on a partially paid bill that is not due until 12/29 - with court in 8 days! Can she do this? What are my options?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 10:23 AM PST

QUESTION: Is she breaking any ethics rules? What can I do? With a hearing for a contempt motion coming up in 8 days - what should I be doing?

BACKGROUND: I am in a heated true and severe parental alienation custody battle. We are making fabulous progress, the judge said last week that my ex is emotionally abusing my children etc. The costs have been high - >$13k since I hired her mid October.

At end of last billing cycle I had more than her minimum balance in the trust account. She issued the new bill on 11/29 - DUE 12/29. I paid $8,000 of the $8,662 + 1k for a positive balance in the trust. I don't have the financial agreement so maybe there is some absurd provision allowing this - but I am NOT behind and at the end of last cycle I met her minimum balance etc.... Here is the courts rules on withdrawal: https://www.courts.wa.gov/court_rules/?fa=court_rules.display&group=ga&set=rpc&ruleid=garpc1.16

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Cheers!

If I were to report sexual abuse, what would happen to the family members who were aware but looked the other way?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 07:35 AM PST

I'm not actually going to report anything, just wondering. When I was 12, I was molested by my grandmother's boyfriend (we lived with them). I told my mother, and she told me not to tell anyone or we would get kicked out and become homeless. I told my grandmother but she said I was a liar. It went on for a year until I told my aunt, and she let me live with her. But no one reported it to the police. Everyone in my family knew but said nothing.

My grandmother was also physically abused by this man, he would beat her with a cane until she was black and blue. My mother called the police but my grandmother refused to press charges. She has since begged for my forgiveness but I'd rather not speak to her.

The man is probably dead now, and even if he weren't I'd be too afraid to do anything about it. But let's say I did, what would happen? I'm 29 now, and have zero evidence. What would happen to my family members, who knew what was happening but chose to keep it quiet? This all took place in Maryland.

[FL] First time at fault accident, property damage exceeds policy limits, what are my options?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 07:18 AM PST

Just to keep this brief and to the point, I am at fault for an accident. At said time I had state minimum for insurance (10k for property damage). Three cars were damaged. One is a total loss with a value of 15k and the other two vehicles were repaired and the cost to fix a little over 10k (from what I was told, didn't get exact numbers). As a side note the car which is totaled has the same insurance company I do (Don't know if that will help in anyway).

I am aware I will owe any amount over my limits. I spoke to my insurance to see if they can find out the exact total for the two repaired vehicles so i can contribute the remainder to close off the claims, then deal with my own insurance company for the totaled car and work something out. This is all still in review.

How likely is this scenario? I am not trying to run away from my debts, but I do want this to be worked out as easy as possible. I don't want to deal with courts or anything, nor will i refuse to settle anything. I don't have much money at the moment saved up.

I am aware I could be facing subrogation as well.

    Any advice?

EDIT: No assets, very little savings, decent income.

My roommate moved out, stole a few things on the way out, and didn't turn his key in. We reported this to our landlord and requested the locks be changed, but he returned last night while we were asleep and stole more items, as the locks have not been changed yet. What should we do? [MO-US]

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 09:00 AM PST

They really haven't stolen enough stuff for my other roommate and I to want to deal with filing a police report, but it has been infuriating, and as of yesterday he no longer has rights to enter the property (though he still has his and his girlfriend's key). We don't know how long it will take to get the locks changed as of yet, so I figure our best bet is to just make sure our landlord knows the urgency of the situation. As far as things they either stole or threw away go, it is probably up to around 100-150 dollars worth of stuff, but the stuff really isn't worth the hassle, seemingly. Our ex-roommate and his girlfriend come from wealthy families and know good lawyers, so if it came down to it, we don't think they would end up with any real sort of punishment for their crimes if we go the legal route. But, I'm no law student, so what do you guys think we should do?

To be clear, my roommate and I had been harassed by this guy's girlfriend for almost two months, who was living here full time without our permission, and without her name on the lease. Three weeks ago, we requested that she move out and go live in her perfectly-fine dorm room that she's stepped foot in maybe twice this semester. Four days ago, they moved out in the middle of the night, taking a lot of our stuff with them. When they returned last night, they broke a few things with my hammer, and, clearly just to piss us off, stole our couch cushions. This is only some of the stuff they did; dealing with this has been a nightmare for over a month. Thanks so much for reading! I appreciate any help we can get.

Asking Bar Not To Bend My ID So Badly

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 09:39 AM PST

    Hey all.

So I am a 21 yr old female who goes to college in a different state than my ID. I recognize that this is a red flag for bars, however, whenever I go in to drink with friends, I get checked once, then they tell a friend/manager, I get 'randomly' checked again, and sometimes even checked a third time.. I wouldn't mind this if they were just looking at my ID, however, they are bending it SO FAR that they have created air bubbles in the laminate on the back of my ID, which is a HUGE red flag from what I understand in determining a fake vs. real.

I go to a college in Kentucky, and my ID is from the neighboring state Ohio. I am 4 hours from home and getting an ID is a hassle in Ohio, and not only would I have to make the drive, but I'd have to have someone else drive me in case I got pulled over or something.

My question is that am I allowed to ask whoever is checking my ID not to bend it so far back? The last time I went, I got checked 3 times and each times they bent it so far that I thought it was about to snap, thus creating more air bubbles. I do not have this problem anywhere else I go except this one particular bar. I do not have my passport with me, but I do have my social security card. Would that work as proof of second identification?

Also, given that they do snap my ID, what're my rights to having them reimburse me for a new ID?

    TIA!!

Incest committed at a young age in France

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 06:36 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm obviously creating a throwaway for this one... Basically I had a "thing" with my sister when I was 12 and she was 9, we used to touch each other's genitals in bed late at night and that was about it. The problem being that last year, she got herself a boyfriend (her first, now she is 18 and I am 21) and when she told him about that he freaked out and pushed her so that she would sue me for rape.

So it happened last year, since then I've been questioned at some point by a few investigators in police buildings and I spent a few days in temporary jail waiting for them to decide if I was going to be able to walk free until the court date or not. There wasn't any update about this for a few months now, nor from the police or my lawyer, and I just heard from a friend that he had to go to the police to answer a few questions about me and this case. So fear is rising up again, my knowledge in law is very little and I keep seeing stuff on the internet that tends to make me believe that I'm actually really facing 15 to 20 years in prison, because according to a 2005 law in France, a minor cannot show consent to a sexual act and any sexual act of penetration with whatsoever is considered a rape on a minor victim.

I was 12 at the time, what can really happen to me, considering that my sister wrote in her deposition these words exactly : "I was never forced to do anything, I was always willing and even sometimes asking for it" ?

If anyone knows his way around a bit in french law, I'd be really grateful for a bit of advice here.

I'm 17 Years Old, My Parenrs Kicked Me Out, and Refuse to Give Me My Belongings

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 08:16 AM PST

Before I begin I just want to thank anyone who takes the time to read all of this. I'm going to start from the beginning, so please bear with me.

It all started one day when my mom came running into the house, not accompanied by my step-dad, after going out with him for a few drinks at their favorite bar. I was playing video games when she came in, and didnt think anything of it. Then, about 15 minutes later, my step-dad comes barreling in accusing my mother of cheating on him. My mother scooped up all of my siblings and I, 7 of us (im the oldest), and we got in the car and drove away. We had no shoes or money. My mother has done this before, hence the reasoning behind my parent's divorce. She does not work; child support and my step-dad's credit card is her only source of income. Naturally, I assumed she really messed up this time due to the fact that she now potentially has to raise 7 kids on just child support, but only recieves money for 6 of us being that my youngest brother is my mom's and step-dad's child. I was infurated, and in my opinion and many others, rightfully so. When we pulled into the Chilles parking lot for my mother to text my step-father to reason with him, about 20 minutes from our house, i immediately messaged my girlfriend to pick me up. I regret this, because i feel as though I abandoned my family. I did leave my mother my debit card so she can get my siblings dinner that night. After I had to walk through the parking lot barefoot, i recieved a text from my mother calling me a "loser drug addict whos not welcomed in her home ever again".

I should clarify what my mother meant by, "drug addict". I do smoke weed. I have never brought weed into my parents home, and have never came home high. At that point in time, I had only smoked a few times in my life. They would search my phone every single night for the past 4 years, thats how they found out.

I stayed at my girlfriends house for 3 days until my school got involved and made me go back home. While at my girlfriends, my parents accused me of smoking crack, completely drained my bank account like they've done in the past to spend the money on themselves, and threatened to call the police on my girlfriends parents for kidnapping me, using the fact that my step-dad's a police officer as a scare tactic e.g. he has pull in the police department and could get my girlfriends parents in a lot of trouble. All they did was feed me, dive me to school, gave me shoes to wear, and a place to sleep. I should also clarify that the situatuon between my mother and step-father was a misunderstanding; she didn't cheat on him. I jumped the gun and I regret that with all my heart.

I went back home the following Wednesday. While home i was ignored, and clearly the whole house resented me.

That following Friday, after a screaming match with my mother, i was told i'd be living with my father, 30 minutes away from my school. I've been here since.

I've had zero contact with my mother, and only a few messages to my step-dad.

It's been two months. They refuse to give me any of my belongings or any of my money back.

My step-dad has even messaged my girlfriend on several occasions just to tell her how much of a loser I am and that she can do so much better than me.

They've locked me out of my bank account and have even made it so I can not cash my checks from work anymore.

I've been told by several adult figures that what they did, and are still continuing to do, is illegal. I'm a minor, they can't kick me out. They have no right to keep my belongings and I should go back home with a police officer to get said belongings. Or, being that I'm a minor and by law that's my home, just walk in and get my belongings and walk out.

I love my family, despite all that they've done to me. Getting the police involved is the last thing i want to do, even though they've threatened to call the police on me numerous times. But it has gotten to a point where I feel as though I have no other option. I'm even about to be kicked out of school because i'm required to have a phsyical every year and my mother snd step-father refuse to give my father my insurance information.

Please, if anyone can shed light onto what exactly i can do please tell me. And if more information is needed, do not hesitate to ask.

    Thank you all so much,

    Dominic

Airline lost my macbook but only wants to pay for a fraction of it; is that fair?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 04:20 AM PST

I flew from Prague to Tel Aviv via El Al Airlines a few weeks ago. I was interrogated for half an hour, body searched, and finally separated from all my luggage, none of which arrived with me in Israel until the day before I was supposed to leave Israel. When El Al delivered my luggage to me, my Macbook Air, leather case, and new 29w adapter and long lightning cable were all missing. The airline has no idea what happened so personally I assume this means the delivery driver stole them, but I have no proof of this.

I've been in contact with the airline since to try to get reimbursed. I bought the laptop for $895 about three years ago, so they're offering me about $350 for it. Is that fair? Can I request more? Because honestly, the whole ordeal is their fault and the amount in total that they're offering me for everything wouldn't even cover the entire cost of another Macbook Air (even used), much less the laptop plus the case, charger and cord.

I know it's especially complicated because I'm in the USA again but then flight was international both in origin and destination, but I'm hoping there's more I can do.

[FL] Mother-in-law served an undercover and didn't ID

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 08:29 AM PST

My MIL is a Vietnamese immigrant, speaks broken English, and started working at a local Vietnamese restaurant about 6 months ago.

She has no prior experience with serving alcohol, but I know she's familiar enough with our laws to know you have to be a certain age to drink (though I don't honestly know if she knows that age is 21). I'm not trying to excuse her actions, but she didn't receive any sort of training from her employer in regards to serving alcohol.

    So here are my questions:

    Does she need a lawyer?

From what I read, she can face a maximum of 60 days in jail and $500 fine, but what is a ballpark penalty she likely to actually get (first time offender with a squeaky clean record)?

Since she didn't receive any training from her employer, can she use that as a defense and sort of pass the buck to them? Is there a legal requirements for them to provide her training on liquor laws?

She's honestly the kindest, most humble person I've ever known and she's devastated by this. She's asking my wife and I for help/advice and wants me to go to court with her, but we don't have any experience dealing with something like this and no legal expertise. I don't want to get a lawyer if it's going to be unnecessary, though.

Consequences of involuntary mental health hold? Chicago, IL

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 08:50 AM PST

    Hi r/legaladvice-

I've been dealing with depression for a few years now. Lately I've been thinking more and more about killing myself- it just really looks like the best option, and I don't see another way out. I guess the last thing left to try and "fix" this is to look into mental health services. I've been really unwilling to do that- I don't have a very positive outlook on therapy or behavior modifiying medications, and most of all I'm terrified of the possibility of having my freedom taken away. The idea of being locked up and having strangers making decisions about my heath is awful, and I know it can have a lasting impact beyond the hospital stay, which is what I was hoping to find more out about from this post. If I'm going to consider talking to someone, I want to do it eyes open and fully understand the risks. So that's what I was mainly hoping to find out- if I do go to the doctor and end up in inpatient care, what lasting impact will that have on my life (assuming treatment actually does something and I don't just kill myself afterwards anyways)?

    • I know gun ownership is restricted. Don't care too much about that; I'm not a gun person

    • I think there are issues with being able to hold a DEA? I'm a veterinarian- I have a DEA, and not having one would significantly complicate things at work. Would I lose it instantly, or only when my current license expires?

    • Others?

Thanks for any info. I'm in Chicago.

Ebay Paypal chargeback. Buyer claimed unauthorized purchase.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 10:15 PM PST

Back in September I had won a raffle to buy a pair of limited shoes. I had listed the shoes on Ebay and ended up selling them through a paypal invoice. A guy on Ebay message me with his interest to buy the shoes and we agreed on a price of $2600. Everything had worked out well and I got the shoes and we exchanged all the info we needed to and did the transaction through paypal which still has buyer protection. I had shipped the shoes to him and he received them and was happy with them. And that was that. Although a month later he had opened up a dispute for the $2600 and claimed it was an unauthorized purchase. I communicated with paypal sending them all of our messages with the evidence I had shipped them and him saying he received them and how he was happy with them, and the messages before that which showed our transaction. Over the past couples month the case has been open and nothing has been done. It is clear that he is in the wrong and clearly authorized the purchase from the messages shown. Although yesterday I believe the case had been closed by PayPal and he was fully refunded the $2600. I am not sure what to do from here as I am now out of the shoes and the $2600. Is there any other steps I can take to resolve this as paypal has already refunded the money and closed the case. The evidence is shown below:

    Thanks.

Edit: I am writing this on my brothers behalf, I was wrong on the fact that it was solely done through PayPal. It was actually all done through eBay.

Need to re-write drug addict mother out of Life Estate Deed.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 07:52 AM PST

I live in my home in Alabama with my Grandmother, my Mother and her Husband. The deed of the house is a Life Estate between my Grandmother, Mother and myself, written up about 30 years ago. I am the 4th generation to grow up in this house. According to my aunt who is a retired judge and attorney, I should have (roughly) a 60% stake in the property, my mother 30%, and grandmother 10%. We are 33, 53 and 71. My mother married her husband about 7 years ago and I am unsure of what legal claim he has through their marriage.

We are at a point where if I do not remove my mother and her husband from the house, she will destroy it beyond repair and cause (further) significant financial and mental health harm to myself and grandmother and real physical harm to my grandmother as she is making it difficult to care for her.

For a synopsis of what is going on in my household to create the need for this: https://www.reddit.com/r/addiction/comments/7ht9ow/breaking_point_of_crack_addict_parents_abusing/

What I am asking for is legal help on how to rewrite the Life Estate to only consist of myself and my grandmother. It is in our best interest (I believe) for her to remain the owner as she receives many benefits being elderly and disabled that we depend on (property tax exemption, garbage collection exemption, state funded home repair options, etc), but for the Life Estate to yield everything to me after her passing. My grandmother is a literal saint and is cooperative and understanding of our situation, but has been broken down by how abusive my mother is to her to finally be willing to evict her.

I have confronted my mother and spoken with her about how their drug habits are going to cause the entire household legal trouble and that I want her name off the deed, and even that I want them to consider living somewhere else at least for a little while as I attempt to clean and repair our home. She agreed and seemed willing, though she doesn't remember a whole lot day to day currently and her level of understanding and cooperation is tenuous at best. They do both get SSI and are able to afford an apartment.

Ultimately, I want to be able to force them out of the home, into rehab, and cleaned up enough to be able to support themselves while I restore our home, give my grandmother the care she deserves, and regain control over my own life and home.

[Update][Seattle] I messed up, my neighbor is mad, called the police, and now I need advice on my best course of action.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 07:51 PM PST

    Orginal post here.

My landlord called me tonight because the neighbor lady called him to tell him what I did.

He is really mad at me but is being a really great person and trying to de-escalate and mediate the situation with the neighbor on my behalf.

Unfortunately, the neighbor thinks I am a scary and unstable person. She wants nothing to do with me. She doesn't want to hear an apology or for me to go near her. BUT she said that if I reimburse her the damages, ~$400 then she will drop the charges.

There is an official police report that says I already admitted to it. (This is true)

It seems that it's in my best interest to reimburse her and avoid the legal problems with the police or going to court.

For my actual legal advice question:

    1. Does it make sense to pay her damages at this point?

    2. Is she actually able to tell the police to drop this and then everything goes away, and everyone moves on with life? Or do police have the right to pursue it anyway?

    3. I need a lawyer to write up the agreement that if I reimburse her that she will officially drop the charges, but I have no idea what I am looking for from a lawyer.

    • What type of lawyer should I look for?
    • In legal speak, what am I asking the lawyer for?
    • Can anyone ballpark how much a lawyer will charge for this service?

I have never had legal problems before and I don't know all the steps or how the system works. Thank's for your help.

Edit: I have an additional question. I'm pretty sure at this point that my next move is to find a defense lawyer and go from there. Paying her off doesn't fix my problem with the charge and I don't agree with her estimate of damages.

Can a lawyer work with her and the prosecutor before an official charge is brought on?

My health insurance put my hospital bills in limbo until it went to a collection agency

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 10:53 AM PST

Hi /r/legaladvice, I have an ongoing issue with my former insurance company that I can't resolve. Last October I was hospitalized for the first time in my life at the age of 21. My life was grounded to a halt by an illness I did not understand at the time. I was diagnosed with Bipolar I. I was going through a full blown manic episode. After spending three days in the hospital, I was whisked away to a mental hospital . At the mental hospital I stayed for roughly 2 weeks. Now let me say during my episode I was in no place to make decisions for myself, especially financial. Thankfully my parents stepped in to help while I was recovering. They graciously allowed me to stay with them for months, and took care of me so I could get back on my feet. During that time I had to quit my job and drop out of school because my symptoms were pretty severe. After a month or two after my initial visit was the first time I heard that there was an issue with my health insurance.

This unfortunately became a trend that has lasted a year and is still ongoing. My insurance claimed I didn't have coverage during my time in the hospital. I always paid my bills and I mean always. Sure enough it was a "mistake"on their end which they fessed up to multiple times on the phone. For the last year I receive unpaid hospital bills in the mail at least once a month.

I then have to call my insurance company usually on a Friday(I had to actual incorporate this into my routine). Not only that but I also have to call the hospitals and CEP (California Emergency Physicians) and beg them not to send my bill to collections. What I've come to find out is my insurance pays my bills, then at random times retracts the payments. This makes it incredibly hard to keep up with because new unpaid bills come in all the time. Once I get the new bills straightened out, old bills that have been "payed" come back to me as unpaid. My insurance company always acts surprised whenever I call them, "We have no idea why this is happening sir, I'll go ahead and update your claim now." Then the claim gets updated, the payment goes out, and a month or so later, surprise, surprise, retracted again.

Today I finally got the news I've been worried about for a year now. One of my hospital bills has gone to a collection agency. Can't blame them really my insurance has bullshitted them for a long time now. I have 30 days to reply, I'm in the process of contacting them right now.

Edit: changed 30 days to pay to 30 days to reply

Thanks for reading, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I'm considering purchasing a home in Texas and would probably want to get one or two roommates. For personal reasons, I don't want to live in a home with a firearm. Obviously I would bring this up with any potential roommate when discussing compatibility. Can I legally require this to be part of a signed roommate arrangement? Would it be any different if I tried to get a roommate to co-rent an apartment or home that I didn't own?

Daughter's severe eczema not being treated during visits with Dad

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 05:12 PM PST

My daughter has prescribed topical steroid to control her severe eczema. If she does not use lotion or the steroid, her skin within a day becomes severely dry, flakey and she itches all over like no other. Over the past year, following the visits with her dad, when I pick her up she has really dry flakey skin (almost scaley looking face) and basically causing us to start all over with recovery. At times these rashes have led to staph infection, as she scratched so much and was untreated for long enough (summer visits) the open sores on her skin became infected. My frustration lies in having to help her back to a somewhat normal skin condition when she is in my custody. The first few days are hell. She barely sleeps, her skin is so dry it hurts to be moisturized, more doses of antibiotics, poor focus in school due to itching, bullying because of her skins appearance, etc. The parenting plan lays out visitation every other weekend plus swapped holiday's based on the calendar year and summer time one week at a time switched off and on for a total of his custody for 4 weeks. I have had numerous conversations with her father about the condition of her skin, her allergies, the treatment, and overall parental responsibilities to help her out. Her skin is being ignored and she's only a first grader dealing with all of this. What can I do besides documenting her skin with pictures? Will this even help to lead to any real change? We are so desperate. I am sorry if this is all over the place or key missing details. We need any guidance we can get at this point. Thank you for reading. Edit: We live in United States - Nebraska

Someone wants to buy my LLC registration (not the business)

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 10:26 AM PST

I have single member LLC (registered in NJ), and I've been contacted by a lawyer whose client wants to reregister an LLC that is one space away from being the same. They've asked me to do them the favor of terminating my LLC so they can reregister.

I have a bunch of questions:

    1. I can find the client's LLC (with the space) registered on the NJ website. The lawyer claims that the registration was expunged, which allowed me to register my business. Am I missing something here? I would think it would be gone if that were the case.

    2. If this is a legitimate offer, what is a reasonable value? They've offered to cover the costs of terminating the business and filing fees, but frankly that doesn't seem like it's worth my time. If they offered $5-10k it might be worth it to me.

    3. I have a fair amount of investment in the marketing (website name, trademarks, brand recognition) for this business. Is there a way I can continue to use the name with a different LLC registration, as a DBA? The business that wants the LLC name does not operate in the same industries as I do (not even close).

Any help would be appreciated. I feel like I'm going to end up going down the road of talking to a lawyer regardless of what I do at this point, but the situation just seems odd. That's another reason that they'd have to offer me a fairly significant amount of cash to get me to do something for them.

[UPDATE] Ex threatened to sue me because he attempted suicide also more questions about gifts and returning them with no contact

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 08:36 AM PST

This is all in Illinois as in my previous post. Made a new throw away account. Post is also unlocked thanks to the lovely mods here.

Update: I went to my university's counseling service and got some emergency help and regular sessions until I leave the univeristy. My family also was very supportive and is doing what they can to help me. I'm trying to not to be constantly scared but it's hard. Since the guy is an alum of the university the school can't really do anything. I'm moving and not telling anyone where i'll be except family and a handful of friends who are not in contact with my ex. I've also changed my number and got rid of every bit of social media I could. I still have one to look for a subleaser for my apartment.

Onto the next issue that I need advice for. He gave me some stuff as a birthday gift and I tried to give it back before but he wouldn't take it. He also gave me some other stuff and I offered to pay for it at market value multiple times but he refused saying you'll appreciate it unlike other people. Honestly most collectors would appreciate the items if he tried to sell it anywhere. I even told him he could make a decent chunk of change for the items.

When I cut contact originally he said he wanted all the stuff he gave me back. In a panic i told him fine i'll send it back and that i'd need his address (I still have it written down to send the items back). It's also in a text that I said I would send them back. So I assume that is kind of a contract between us? I have his address but I don't think he has mine. I'd also like to avoid giving him my address in any way. And he said he was cutting contact with me after the last post and didn't want me to contact him (I wouldn't anyways and never did after I cut contact originally).

Would sending it back be breaking no contact? And could he take me to court for even sending that back and making contact via sending him the stuff?

[OH] Private high school wants to give detentions for not saying the Pledge of Allegiance

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 03:41 PM PST

I work at a small private school in Ohio that wants to make it mandatory for students to say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning and to participate in the National Anthem (stand at attention with hand over heart). I am supposed to model this behavior and give detentions to those students that choose not to do this (something I do not want to do).The school administration is pushing this as a form of "being a good citizen" and "being respectful to veterans".

We were just handed this today and are supposed to enforce it on Monday morning. I read a couple things online about not being able to punish students for not saying the Pledge, but M not sure it applies to private schools. Can I be forced to participate (not in my contact explicitly, just that I am to be a role model), and is it legal for me to issue punishment for this behavior?

Any advice is appreciated, and I apologise if this is the wrong sub.

    Lawyer for Inheritance?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 08:18 AM PST

There's a (pardon the saying) "gold digger" going after my family's inheritance.

Is there a specific "type" of lawyer that deals with inheritance/will/power of attorney? A specific term to Google?

    Thank you!

[MA] Roommate smashed a pane of glass in the front door of our apartment building, can our landlord try to evict us?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 10:37 AM PST

I left my apartment building (6 units) this morning and noticed a huge pane of glass from the front door of the street entrance to our building was shattered with shards everywhere and some blood on the pieces. Took some photos and sent to my landlord to notify her. I text my 3 roommates to show them the damage.

A couple hours later 2 officers from our local police department knock on our apartment door and say a trail of blood led up the stairs to our unit. They say everything's ok but asked if I was cut or if I heard anything. I told them I was fine but hadn't seen my roommates so I couldn't answer for them.

I text the roommates again again saying the police showed up at our door and asked if everything was ok. "Tony" texts me and says "Mike" did something stupid and he had to take him to the ER. He wouldn't give any other details other than that Mike didn't want him to tell us what happened. Mike hasn't responded to texts and we don't know where he is.

Assuming Mike is fine, my concern is that the police report to the landlord that the blood led up to our unit, and the landlord (who we have an okay relationship with) will try to use this to evict us. Would it be legal for her to do so or am I panicking for nothing?
