BCBS won't let me get a generic medication instead of name brand.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 12:33 PM PST

I have a prescription that used to cost me $10/mo for the generic when I had United Healthcare. Now that I have Blue Cross Blue Shield, the name brand costs $36.50/mo. I saw something on the back of my bag from the pharmacy that told me how much I would save me annually if I switched to the generic, so I asked a pharmacist about it when I went for my last refill. They said BCBS "prefers the name brand," so I could not get the generic.

Is there anything I can do about this? I think its silly to pay an extra $26.50 for the exact same compound.

Is a Individual Retirement Annuity (IRA) subject to the Individual Retirement Account contribution limits?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 04:24 PM PST

I'm helping out a friend and she has both an Roth IRA and Individual Retirement Annuity (variable) at Northwestern Life.

Do these IRA's share a contribution limit or are they separate? Or is the acronym just a happy coincidence.

Edit: Thanks for the replies. Going to check it is a qual or non-qualified account

Learned today that State Farm bankrolls ALEC - time to change the house insurance provider. Which company has more ethical policies?

    Someone rear ended me

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 06:16 PM PST

Came out of a small store today to find my trunk pushed into my back seat :/

No note no nothing, it looks like a red tailgate backed into my car.

Do I pay for this out of my own pocket or do I call insurance and file a claim? I don't want my rate to go up. That's the main thing. Will I be punished for filing a claim money wise? (I'm a car guy, and my cars my baby so I'm dying inside right now)

    Car accident

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 11:15 AM PST

My husband and I were involved in a car accident this morning. He is at fault, having rear ended another car. We are now in the dilemma of trying to determine if we should go through insurance for the repairs to his vehicle. The insurance will more than likely total out his car (KBB value is estimated between $414-$909), but our deductible is $500. The entire passenger side front of the vehicle is crushed in and the lights are shattered. We do not want to end up paying our deductible only to find out we won't get at least that back in the car. What would your suggestions be to do in this case?

Drawbacks to going with Progressive (or similar) company?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 04:37 PM PST

I was with Progressive until 2008ish. The rate fluctuated up and down before that, but it was negligible. No accidents or tickets. After six years (in 2008), they sent me a notice about all of the perks I would receive "for free" for being a long time customer without claims, along with a $300/year rate increase. I switched to Allstate, but the customer service was abysmal enough to switch after being with them a month.

At that time, I switched to Amica, which has increased every year...sometimes a little, sometimes a moderate amount, even with no claims or tickets. Their customer service has always been really friendly and proactive, calls are answered pretty much immediately, and they are well rated, so I haven't shopped around for insurance.

I'm in my 30s (F) and my partner is in his 40s (M) with a 2016 Civic and 2007 Odyssey. The area has very little property crime. For 2017, we paid $1750.

We made a claim earlier this year for a cracked windshield (we have the added glass coverage)- this is literally the first claim I have ever made on insurance and the first one he has made in over 15 years. I just received the renewal notice, and it is going up to $2040.

So, I started looking for quotes with other companies. Other well-rated ones want me to meet with someone or their online quote system fails, and honestly, that's not going to happen. I checked Progressive and they are $680 for six months for double the coverage amounts and additional things we don't have now, like roadside assistance. Even if Amica were willing to discuss a lower rate, I can't see them coming within any reasonable range to justify paying so much.

Are Progressive or other lower cost companies that bad? The lower cost would be really helpful right now, but I'm afraid of getting into a "you get what you pay for" situation. We drive safely and have no tickets or accidents, and I feel like if anything happened it would be someone else's fault, but I also don't want to have to battle my insurance company to have them cover something if it did happen.

(OH-> CA) New grad moving for job - no car - getting rental in CA

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 11:00 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I recently graduated from college and am moving to California next year for a job. I currently do not own a car and am on my parent's insurance, which is through Safeco Insurance.

When I move, my new employer will give me a month-long rental care while I get myself established and seek out a permanent vehicle. Once I have a permanent vehicle I will be moving to my own CA auto insurance policy.

My question is, how exactly will this work out? Do I stay on my parent's insurance while I am in California driving a rental car? When I purchase a vehicle, do I then obtain my own policy and wait for it to begin to drive the vehicle off the lot? Or do I sign up for my own insurance at the dealer?

    Thanks for the help!

Canceling license to stop paying auto insurance?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 02:32 PM PST

I got into an accident, while lane switching and a car behind hit me on the left side, the hood of my car is bent towards the right.. From what I saw on google that is my fault since it wasn't my lane.

I'm 20 so my insurance rate is already high, I'm assuming this is going to make it sky rocket. I don't think I can afford that. I don't even own a car, I drive my parents' cars.

Can I give up my license and take my name off my parents' insurance policies? And of course, I have no plans to drive if I am able to give up my license. Atleast until I graduate college and reapply for a license.

Or is that not possible. I'm in california, los angeles.

Driver backed up into my car - will not cooperate and is now avoiding me/my agent's calls. What to do?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 09:41 AM PST

Hey guys! Question for you all. I was driving around about a month or two ago when a driver backed his car into mine (he was pulling out of a perpendicular parking spot). He agreed he was at fault and we both took out all of our documentation/information and took photos of it. We then exchanged contact information and went on our way (the police did not get involved, which I admit was a mistake on my part). I gave this information to my insurance agent and she contacted his insurance company (State Farm). It turns out that the policy number on his paperwork did not come up in their system as an auto policy, but as an "application number" or something of the sort. She tried contacting everyone else on his insurance binders and they all were not able to find his relevant information. He also would not return my agent's mail or phone calls. I was actually able to find the driver on Facebook and he was pretty cooperative with me, was apologetic and said he would get a hold of her. Since then, she has not heard from him and still continues to ignore her attempts to contact him. After messaging him again, he proceeded to block me. I don't know if his paperwork was fraudulent, or just outdated. At the end of the day, I ended up paying the deductible for my car's damage. My deductible being waived is hinging on getting his insurance to pay for it. However, at this point, it seems like there's not much else I can do. To top it off, unfortunately, I didn't have uninsured driver insurance. Can he just keep ignoring my agent and I and get away with it?

Box in road, who is liable?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 07:56 AM PST

Let me open by saying this actually happened but (luckily) nothing came of it.

Earlier this week I was driving down the highway on my way to school. Everyone was travelling at 65mph in relatively tight traffic.

A truck a few vehicles ahead of myself in the left lane beside me had a flattened box fly out of his truck bed and land in the lane in front of me. With a vehicle on both sides of me I was unable to avoid it so I had to just drive over it. I drive a higher sitting truck so it caused no damage to me.

Upon driving over it, my wheels shot it out and it smacked a cars windshield that was driving a few vehicles behind me in the right lane.

I was going to pull over if they did, but looking back at them they didnt seem concerned and could easily have caught up to me if they had an issue with it. Luckily nothing came of it.

But this got me wondering, who would have been liable for damages to the third car? Thanks for any responses!

Auto Accident - Not my fault

    Posted: 09 Dec 2017 06:36 AM PST

I involved in an accident. The driver, John, hit me in the rear of my car because he was unable to control the speed. The police at scene declared that it is not my fault and gave John a ticket.

I filed claims with both his insurance and my insurance company. After inspection, my insurance company declared that my car is totaled. The estimation repair cost is $7k.

At fault insurance company offered to repair it, but with the repair estimation around $5k.

I do not want to claim with my insurance because I have to pay $500 for deductible. Maybe my insurance rate will go up for the next cycle. If claim with at fault insurance, the estimation repair cost is only $5k. I think the quality of repair service is not good to recover my car to initial condition.

Please advise what I need to do? Thanks
