I really wish more people knew about SCORE! Get yourself a Free Local Small Business Mentor!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 05:22 AM PST

This is probably going to sound like a blatant advertisement, but I feel like this is for the better good of the sub... and it is on the wiki (that nobody reads!)

SCORE is a 50+ year old nonprofit that helps small businesses grow by providing you with a free mentor.

SCORE stands for Service Corps of Retired Executives and they have helped the likes of Ben and Jerry's and my father when he opened and later sold his laundromat here in Maryland years ago.

Depending on where you live in the US you can go to your local chapter, get virtual mentoring or face-to-face, or go to one of the free webinars.

Heads-Up Some chapters have local workshops that are low-cost, like $5. I went to a workshop where it was a 2-hour workshop on Market Analysis for $5 and met some great people, probably the best money I've ever spent.

There are a lot of great free resources out there and this sub is here to provide you with it... No need to pay $1000/month for some crap Facebook group.

Give it a shot, there are some great ladies and gentlemen on there!

SCORE is sponsored by the U.S Small Business Administration

    Pre-launch marketing tips?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 11:09 AM PST

I'm getting near the launch of my ecommerce site with a very niche market that's been garnering tons of interest. Got my email lists, social media, etc etc.

What are some pre-launch marketing tips you can give me? Since you only can 'launch' once, I want to do this right.

    Thanks all!

One man operation looking for advice on fulfillment.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:41 AM PST

I make a heavy/durable good and handle all of my fulfillment myself. One of my shortcomings is a lack of a "pick list".

Does anyone have a good method for generating a pick list to make sure I don't forget anything when shipping an order? I'm a one man operation so I'm not looking for something expensive and enterprise grade just yet?

Looking for the best method to build this MVP

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:42 AM PST

I am a minor partner in a franchise business. My business is dependent on getting a lot of leads every month. Our franchisor gives us excellent branded marketing but there is a segment of our client base that has a negative connotation of our business just because of our name (due to some less than reputable operators that used to own franchises).

I want to start a non branded lead gen campaign to get people interested in my services without disclosing my business name up front. I plan to accomplish this with non branded lead pages and email followup.

Once I can successfully establish a campaign that effectively generates leads for my store, I want to be able to run the same campaigns for stores in other markets. Essentially I will be my own first client, but I want to embark on this project for myself knowing that I plan to scale this up asap.

What I want to provide for my future clients is this:

    1. Several non branded lead pages with their own domains (not sub-domains).

    2. Email autoresponders so that new leads will hear from there store instantly

    3. Leads instantly delivered by email to the client

    4. A proven Facebook ad campaign that I will run

The real question here is this. What products or solutions should I use to allow me to build my own landing pages and email marketing now that I can then also use to create the same for my future clients? I don't want to set something up now for myself now that makes adding new clients too difficult.

For the Facebook ads, I have very little experience placing facebook ads, I have toyed with them in the past with little success. Do I enlist professional help or just keep testing until I find something that works?

I am not a web developer or designer so I would rather not have to set up a new wordpress for each landing page. I have looked at getresponse that does have landing page builders built in but I don't know how robust the software is and if it will really do everything I need. I did build myself a landing page on weebly but I haven't launched it yet as I haven't bought a domain and I would rather have my autoresponer in place first. Also, Weebly is not really viable for my biz plan as it will cost me $8/month per landing page which is stupid. Maybe landingpages.com with aweber?

Just looking for some knowledge from some experienced marketers.

Any input is appreciated. I know this post rambled a little bit so please feel free to ask me for clarification.

I thought he was doing well, I bought a case from his site a few years ago. I went to contact him to ask him some questions about the case space and his email is defunct and website domain abandoned.

    Following my business journey? Thoughts?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:48 PM PST

Hi /r/entrepreneur, I'm addicted to this sub and I am excited to contribute to it. I see a lot of post asking for guidance, lessons learned, and just general inspiration. I was wondering if any of you would be interested in me starting a vlog/ video series of me documenting my business life. Started another business about 2 months ago, so you would be able to see the initial stages and day to day operations. Think it could be interesting considering I'm young and will make mistakes that others can learn from.

    What are your thoughts?

Starting a Simple Pressure Washing Business, Looking for Advice on a few aspects of small businesses!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:47 AM PST

So I will start with a little background. I worked for a brick paver company for a few years and did all of the cleaning and sealing. I am experienced with the equipment and with pavers/travertine specifically. Also, I currently work for a brewery and earn enough to make a living. I am looking to use my free time(3-4 days a week) to supplement my income and save for future travels.

I will be specializing in driveways, patios and pool decks, including application of sealant. If there are any pressure washers out there I could use some advice on chemical washing concrete safely and effectively.

As for general business, I can't seem to get a straight answer online of how much money to put away for taxes. From the start I am looking to leave 75% of money earned in a business account just to build revenue for the company first.

I also need some advice on drafting contracts and tracking finances. I have been told that quickbooks can help with this.

Any and all advice would be appreciated!

Website/service with a very similar concept (but also different) raised 3.2 million dollars, is this bad or good for us?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 11:58 AM PST

Soo I found out a competitor that's in the same market as us, which is in gaming and e-sports raised 3 million dollars this summer. I was honestly pretty shocked by this number, and especially because it was first seed round.

Does this help us by giving us some leverage if we also decide to go for funding in the future as we can say they were evaluated at X amount or does it actually hurt us?

I know it definitely hurts us in terms of development speed and resources, but this is a market that is plenty large enough for 2 main competitors so I'm wondering if it just further validates our concept.

    Thoughts?

Anyone do USPS pickups? Does your carrier leave totes?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 08:53 AM PST

My business now fills about 3 USPS totes (small plastic ones) a day. I wheel them in to the PO presorted FC/PM/PME and they always have three empty ones waiting for me.

We really need to start considering pickups. I'm just worried though that we might lose our totes and not have anything to put packages in. Anyone get the pickup guys to successfully leave totes or work out a system where you can use your own totes?

How do you handle the emotional strain of competition?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 02:11 PM PST

I've noticed for a while, competitors popping up some get investment, some fall by the way side. but there is a huge market and they still don't quite offer what we offer.

The problem is, every time I see one of these competitors I think to myself "I'm too late", "Is there any point carrying on"?

Of course I do, but it's emotionally wearing.

    How does everyone handle it?

    Shipping Costs More Than Products

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 02:04 PM PST

I am trying to solve the age old shipping issue. Shipping our product costs more than the product itself. It turn, getting the supplies we need also costs more than the supplies itself. Even ordering the supplies to make our product costs more, even in bulk.

I keep thinking there must be a way to solve this, but so far I haven't found one. Any ideas?

What software's are sole traders using for managing deliveries to customers?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 01:44 PM PST

    Hey all!

So allow me to give a slight bit of background to this little potential brain wave that I had, and am looking into seeing is it worth pursuing further.

I am a student, working full time in a garden centre to help pay my way (It's a lot cheaper over here in the UK).

I have pretty good customer relations, so I am usually left plonked at the counter - interacting and being the person that all the elderly customers come in and talk to ( I really don't mind, it helps the day fly by).

So a thing, coming up to Christmas now, is the delivery of Christmas trees - as bizarre as that sounds I know.

Their is usually 2 guys out on deliveries the whole time, one driver and the other helps with assisting the driver remove all the goods and transport them into the house.

    Simple stuff really.

The typical "lifter" was sick for the last couple days, and being the only other guy working there I have been reassigned as the assister in these trips.

And my god I was HORRIFIED at how unprepared they were.

So for starters, EVERYTHING is recorded on paper.

Which I didn't understand at all. There is a big pad of these printed sheets, with certain boxes on them, so as the cashier who is putting through the sale can fill it out if the customer specifies they want it to be delivered to them.

There is a hell of a lot of:

    • spelling mistakes

    • numbers written down wrong

    • addresses misspelled/ not taken down correctly

    • No time specified on some dockets

From a few of those mistakes alone yesterday and today it cost us a solid few hours, and a few shouting matches between the 2 of us (built up stress on the drivers part).

So before we left today we had to do the typical thing of attempting to call all of the customers before-hand to ensure they were there.

No point driving 25 minutes to deliver a good and to see that they are not there.

More than 80% of the customers did not have their phones on and did not answer the calls - which of course lead to more stress on the side of the driver.

So it got me thinking basically - why the hell is this still an issue and why are the garden center not using a software to arrange all of their deliveries for them / does it even exist?

After looking into a bit, I have found that there are "Systems" to help with deliveries but it goes the whole way down to having additional hardware that the customer signs off when they recieve goods.

I would not be looking for anything that complex.

Essentially I am looking at starting to develop:

A system in which, customers delivery information are input through a computer / additional hardware piece (tablet etc) at the cash register - and on the day of the delivery the driver of the van obtains a simple / easy to read map of exactly what they have to bring to where - on their phone, and the night before the delivery - the customer is sent a text / email to remind them about the delivery and on the morning of the delivery also.

Is there anything like that out there at the moment? Or would I be best off trying to code something like it myself?

I have done thorough research into the market, and currently have a complete 5 year business plan that lays out the market, revenue model, and details for maximizing profit and lowering expenses. This isn't some half baked idea. This is something I have put together entirely on my own. I have done the research, I have studied and learned the market, and I have already taken steps on my own to ensure this projects succeeds without question. Thank you for your time.

Brick and Mortar Social Media Strategy Business - Any ideas for a name and feel for the brand?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 09:32 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I'm starting a Business that uses social media as a tool for brick and mortar businesses to compliment what value their physical products or services provide. I'm focusing on local Businesses exclusively I'm not even venturing into London yet, I'll be providing a combination of design and consulting services to help brand their social media presence and integrate the right platforms to work in sync with their Business model.

At the moment I was thinking of calling it kintsukuroi, using the "golden repair" as the premise that my service is adding the social media planning as the filling of the gaps in their model but I'm not sure if I like it I'm designing a logo at the moment and I'm at a loss where to go with it.

Does anyone have some ideas for a name, it could be bland or risque, i'm open to all ideas.

How do you start a market research?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 01:44 AM PST

Very simple question. Just looking to brainstorm some ideas to find a gap in the market and see if its viable or not.

Example: typicall food from a country that people like a lot but isnt usually available in another country -> i would start with a basic sample to give people to eat it. If its a success then I would upgrade to a food truck and then a small restaurant speacialized in it until I have a restaurant chain and go with that or sell it.

But Im a newbie at enterpreneurship, so what do you think and how would you do something like this? Doesnt have to necessarially be a food chain

Building your personal brand when your name is a common one

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 05:25 AM PST

I'm in the early stages of building my personal brand. What I mean is, that while I have business ideas for 2018 that will encompass media and content creation, I also want to ensure that I am building my personal brand simultaneously. With that said, my biggest issue at the moment is finding a way to utilize my name in my brand, when I have a very common name.

Do any others have experience with this? What do you do when you want your personal brand to officially be your name, but you've got a common name that is unusable across social media. Being that Social Media is where I intend to build my businesses and my brand at a high level, naming is everything! Any help, ideas, tips on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Reddit! After many years of studying and working as an architect I have finally decided to start my own practice. I never thought that finding a name for my practice would be so difficult. I really don't want to use my own name for my business as I am an immigrant and my foreign name can be hard to pronounce for the locals (I normally go by an anglo version of my name for practicality). Any help will be appreciated. Cheers :-)

Is Kickstarter the best way to test a product before going all in? If not, what is the best way in your opinion?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:45 AM PST

Long story short, had a product bomb on me (like zero sales). I think it looks great, is interesting, and is priced correctly... I was highly confident there was a market for it based on social media tests, and especially since I've seen much dumber things be successful. Well, I was horribly wrong.

Facebook likes and shares don't mean anything. And to be honest, neither does conversation about the product with people in person (most are supportive, even if they really aren't).

What matters is when the "rubber meets the road" and you are actually offering the product for sale, and the response that follows.

Without creating the full product first, would you guys agree Kickstarter is the best way to "test the market" so to speak?
