Filing Claim with My Insurance vs. Other Party's Insurance Question Posted: 30 Nov 2017 12:12 AM PST Hi all - I got rear-ended at a red light about a week ago with some decent damage done to my car and is currently inoperable. My GF and I immediately called the police and the other driver admitted fault (she was incredibly nice and honest). This was stated in the official police report as well as her official statement to her insurance company as part of my claim. Here's the situation. Her insurance is one of those cheapo practices where they are incredibly slow - I'm still in "pending" status for the 4th straight work day on getting someone to look at the car on their behalf. They also tell me that they can't issue me a rental car until someone checks out the car. So I'm double f'd right now. And I don't want to pay out of pocket for a rental and request reimbursement through this company as their reviews are pretty shady. Going through their insurance has been a major pain, and I'm curious to know my options. I started a claims process with my own insurance as a "just in case" means. They've stated they can get my car towed to a body shop and get the process started within 24 hours as they are one of the larger folks with greater means. I'm happy to go through the 2nd option, but I have a high deductible. My insurance told me they would work with the other driver's insurance company to recover the funds needed for the repair including my deductible, but there's no guarantee I would receive that amount back. I would love to hear your options on what would be the best approach to take under these circumstances, specifically the following:
Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Appreciate any guidance you can provide. [link] [comments] |
Is this typical, or is my coverage just bad? Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:09 PM PST Okay, so...very ignorant when it comes to this. I've been privileged enough to be on my dad's insurance for most of my life, but recently have come off and on my own. I'm a registered nurse, and the first hospital I worked for had amazing benefits and insurance coverage. I'm also a type 1 diabetic, so this comes into play for me BIG time. A lot of my co-workers have no idea the different plans that are available just simply for the fact that they don't need to such as someone with a disease. Anyway, the first hospital I worked for, I could get my insulin in a 3 month supply for 20 dollars. Which is fantastic. I ONLY paid co-pays to see my Endocrinologist, which was 50$ for a specialist. And when I was at my general doc, I only paid a copay of 30$. These are things that I paid attention to, no small details. Unfortunately I had to move hospitals for many different reasons, and started working for another company and quickly got slapped in the face with their benefits. My 3 month supply of insulin that used to be 20$, has jumped to 150$ with my current insurance. Seeing my Endo (specialist) is no longer just a copay, it's a 45%/co-insurance which basically how the lady explained it to me is that I'm paying 45% of whatever that Endo charges, which came out to be a 93$ visit, which I cannot afford to do often. Lastly, I have a chronic herniated disc I've had since I was a teenager, and I had a horrible "breakout" with it a couple months ago that caused me to pass out. Long story short, the ER copay was 200$, even though they talked to me for 5 minutes and sent me to my general doc, because they could not do an MRI on me. General doc was a copay of 40, which they then gave me a script to do an MRI. Just this week, I got 3 different bills in. 120$ for the MRI, which I expected. But then I got slammed with a 250$ bill for the specialist who read the MRI, and a 207$ ER doctor that saw me for 5 minutes. So my question is, IS THAT NORMAL?? I know this may seem basic to some of you, but I've had to go to the ER in the past for different things and I've only EVER paid a copay. I've never been billed after with different doctor charges. Is this typical? Or is this insurance I'm on frankly just not good..? Thank you for the time. [link] [comments] |

Need help understanding HRA and HSA plans Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:34 PM PST I am starting a new job in a couple of days, and will need to choose which health plan I want. I'm not familiar with the HSA and HRA, when I've had insurance in the past I wasn't offered HRA, and HSA was offered only on a very high deductible plan which I didn't go for. Now my options are two HRA choices and one HSA choice. I have a couple of chronic health issues (Autoimmune Graves and hormones replacements) that will possibly` require surgery in the future, and the regular prescriptions if paid out of pocket would be expensive without insurance helping out. from most expensive to cheapest: HRA Company contribution $750 Deductible $1,500 90/10 after deductible FSA account optional Premium $38.60 biweekly Annual max out of pocket $3,000 HSA Employer contribution $350 Deductible $1,500 80/10 after deductible No FSA available Premium $32.03 biweekly Annual max out of pocket $3,000 HRA Employer contribution $500 Deductible $2,000 70/30 after deductible FSA optional Premium $25.46 biweekly Annual max out of pocket $4,700 Both HRA plans have the same copays ($20 for urgent care, $200 for ER) but the HSA plan listed has "no copays apply". The HRA plans have the same RX drug plans, the HSA plan RX drugs are full price out of pocket until deductible is met, then the 80/20. then 100 percent if I hit the 3K. I'm not really considering the cheapest plan, since I know I will need to use my insurance and that the cost in premium difference isn't much. The difference between the HRA and HSA is confusing me, and I'm not certain which would be a better choice for me. The HRA employer contribution would be $750, so the deductible would basically be $750 correct? With the HSA contribution being only $350, deductible would be $1,150? Or is there a difference between how those funds can be used, they both can go to deductibles and the HRA can be used on it's own copays? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:28 PM PST I live in Arizona. I am uninsured, and coming up on 90 days of employment at my new job. I sent an email to HR asking about health coverage, and was informed that "due to the variable nature of my hours," I am not eligible for healthcare until after 6 months of employment. I have consistently worked 40 hours every week since starting 78 days ago. From everything I can find online, any person working 30+ hours per week should be eligible after 90 days. Am I missing something? The company employs over 500 people. Edit: after some reading, it looks like variable hour employees can be made to wait up to an entire year for the employer to determine if they're full time. I think it will come down to if I'm considered full time or variable hours. It seems like a gray area. I work as a therapist for kids with autism. I am assigned to two siblings that have 40 hours a week of therapy each. There is one other therapist assigned to the case, so there are 40 hours to split between only me and that one other employee. The person that had this case before me was a full time employee. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:47 PM PST My employer offers a high deductible healthcare plan that I can enroll in. I've used this HDHP plan for 2017 and it's served me will. My employer will pay the full premium for the HDHP plan, or will pay me $350/month to get my own plan. I'm planning to leave the job and go freelance sometime in mid 2018. Does it make sense to take the $350/month to buy a marketplace plan for the year starting now? Or should I stick with an employer-based plan while I have it, and then move to a marketplace plan after I leave my job (which I assume is a qualifying event?)? I assume my deductible will start over if I switch plans mid-year, which makes me want to take the marketplace plan. But turning down a well-resourced and managed employer plan for the unknown marketplace is a bit daunting. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:42 AM PST So I decided to get a new quote from Progressive and agent told me that based on my vin info, vehicle can't be insured because it's listed in natural disaster list, which is utter horseshit , because I just ran a title check to see previous history and it's clean, anyone ever dealt with something like that? Question 1 In this scenario, would I be covered under their insurance policy to drive the rental car? How about when i drive their cars? Question 2 Under the typical circumstances, we have AmEx for damage to the rentals we rent, but end up paying a lot every-time we rent for liability. Does anyone know of a good non-owner car insurance policy? [link] [comments] |
Will my vehicle GAP insurance cover the extended warranty purchased on totaled vehicle? Posted: 29 Nov 2017 04:31 PM PST After doing some research online I've read alot of articles stating that Gap insurance does not in fact cover extended warranties purchased on a vehicle. I'm not sure if my situation might be different or not but my car loan and extended warranty (both purchased from the same dealer) are rolled into the same loan, which was provided by my credit union. My car was recently totaled and my insurance paid out the value of the car, which happened to be the exact amount of what I paid for it, $24,000. On top of the $24,000, I purchased a $2000 extended warranty. As of now my loan balance lies at $1600, so my question is, will my Gap insurance cover the rest of that loan? My credit union has already stated that they have begun the Gap claims process on that resting amount. But like I said, most of what I've read online states that Gap does not cover extended warranties. I'm just curious as to whether or not Gap will cover the $1600. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2017 03:22 PM PST Someone hit my parked car and causes visible damage to the bumper. I got a police report but decided to cut them a break and let them settle outside of insurance. I got an estimate. They are claiming its too high and want me to go to their "family friends" auto repair/auto body shop. The problem is this place looks extremely sketchy. It is over 40 minutes drive away from me and in the ghetto. I am asking them to just pay me or my body shop but they dont want to. What are my options? [link] [comments] |
First time home buyer flood insurance question Posted: 29 Nov 2017 02:38 PM PST Hello all, So I'm a first time home buyer and everything is very new to me. My lender recently told me I had to purchase flood insurance for the area my new home will be in (according to FEMA its in a low .2% risk in zone X , not a floodplain and as such would be covered by a preferred risk policy) according to the FEMA policy premiums they state for 250K coverage without a basement it should be $344 however I am being quoted around $450 why would there be a $100 difference? I was under the impression this is regulated by the government, is this not the case? Thanks for you help! [link] [comments] |
Earthquake Insurance - More Detailed Guidance Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:27 AM PST I live along the New Madrid fault line in a 85+ year-old full masonry home. I am struggling to find 'reasonable' earthquake coverage. I am already working with an independent agent so if someone has specifics on what companies will underwrite policies on old, full masonry homes, please share! As of now, my coverage is with Nationwide (over $8,500 for auto, home+earthquake, umbrella). I have a quote from Safeco for about $6,000 for comparable coverage, but it doesn't include Earthquake. The stated amount for Earthquake coverage with Nationwide is $500 per year with a 20% deductible. Any and all help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2017 05:03 AM PST Hey all, So I was hit a month ago and the driver admitted liability for the incident and I was to be paid a settlement for the estimated cost of my vehicle. A month later and a bit of back and forth with info, the underwriters brought up a claim I made 3 years ago and stated I had not put it on my policy, which is true... I forgot about it. The incident itself was a vandalism incident, again a not at fault situation. They say the amount I paid for my initial policy was 16% short, so they will take 16% of my claim, roughly £700! They say it was a form of misrepresentation. That said, I have been with this company for 2 years, the incident happened a few days before the end of my second year. Is there anything I can do about this seeing as I am not legally liable for the accident that occurred? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

[IN] At-fault accident with no insurance Posted: 29 Nov 2017 11:35 AM PST Wife was involved in an accident at the end of August. We had a reallllly tight month and did not make the insurance payment for that month. We were just outside the window for being able to make the payment and get the policy reinstated. Our car is fixable, but totaled due to cost, and the other car had some minor damage. The other car's insurance company was State Farm. State Farm reached out to us through Bell Subrogation for them to get reimbursed for the damages to the other car totaling somewhere around $3400. They offered us a settlement of $1800. The recovery agent on the phone let us know that by paying this, my wife's license would not face suspension. We received a "Release of Property Damage Claim" from State Farm for the other car after paying the settlement. Today, we received a notice from the BMV that my wife's license is now suspended for 3 months for not providing proof of insurance. Should this have happened even though we settled the insurance claim? [link] [comments] |
Medicare while being a dependent? Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:54 AM PST Hey guys, so I'm currently still a dependent under my parents and I'm living on my own in college, and I'd like to get insurance for myself since my parents don't exactly have insurance for me, I was wondering if I can get my own Medicare while still being a dependent and whether they go based off my parents income or my own? Thanks guys, I really know hardly anything about insurance. I'm also 18 and currently am in Denver, if that affects anything. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Do I have a Great Idea or Am I Missing Something? Health Insurance, Birth, and Qualifying Events Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:01 AM PST So I just had what seems like a great idea and am looking for either confirmation or for someone to burst my bubble. It's open enrollment season for health insurance through my employer. My wife is due with our first child in February. Here's the idea: I sign up for the very expensive Platinum plan ($530 bi-weekly premium) that has $0 deductible and $1500 max out-of-pocket. Then, when the child is born, I use the qualifying event to switch to the Bronze HDHP plan. The idea is that we'll pay 2-4 premium payments, $1500 out of pocket, and then switch to a new plan. Normally, the Platinum plan is prohibitively expensive since the annual premium is about 13.5k, which is greater than the premium+oop max amount of the HDHP Bronze plan. BUT since I only need to pay those premiums for a few weeks, it seems like I could take advantage of low oop max while forgoing the pain of the annual premium since I will change plans post-birth. Am I missing something? Am I about to #GAMETHESYSTEM? Or am I just a health insurance noob hastening my demise somehow? Please let me know! [link] [comments] |
How is the underwriting trainee program at Unum? Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:46 AM PST So I applied to a group insurance underwriting trainee program at Unum(Colonial Life) and I have an interview so I just wanted to know about the company and how it's perceived along with the trainee program. Than you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2017 08:05 PM PST Over a year ago I was in an accident that I received a DUI for. During the calls with the insurance reps I admitted that I was facing DUI charges(didn't want to lie to them because that is a crime In itself) as far as I'm aware my insurance paid for the repairs to the other party but would not pay for anything regarding my own vehicle. Several months ago I had had all charged dismissed. I never had my license revoked or had to go through any of the typical steps that go along with a DUI. Never arrested, simply received a letter/ticket in the mail. So my question is when I go to register my new car will I be subject to a DUI surcharge because I admitted to the insurance company that I was being investigated for said DUI? Or will the fact that all charges were dismissed factor into the situation? [link] [comments] |
